Feed “The braggest thing about the feed, the thing that made it really big, is that it knows everything you want and hope for, sometimes before you even know what those things are."“Everything we do gets thrown into a big calculation. Like they're watching us right now. They can tell where you're looking. They want to know what you want.”

1984 “Always the eyes watching you. Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or in bed- no escape”

“Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull”

“BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while dark eyes looked deep into Winston’s own”

•Government uses technology to physically be inside a persons which allows the government access to everything a person comes in contact with.•People believe the feed is trying to help get them what they want in life.

•Government uses telescreen technology as a constant surveillance to keep citizens in check.•People believe that “Big Brother” is always right.

"Computers were all outside the body. They carried them around outside of them, in their hands, like if you carried your lungs in a briefcase and opened it to breath”

“People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, and your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten.” •Simplifying language allows people to talk in as few words as possible.•Creates less intelligent thoughts •Removing a person from the Earth and destroying any memory of them allows for less difficulties for the government

“‘If you have a word like ‘good’, what need is there for a world like ‘bad’? ‘Ungood’ will do just as well’”

"they make a special profile, one that's keyed just to you, and then they give it to their branch companies, or other companies buy them, and they can get to know what it is we need, so all you have to do is want something and there's a chance it will be yours"

•Feed technology allows people to do anything without any physical effort or much thought

“It's like a spiral: They keep making everything more basic so it will appeal to everyone. And gradually, everyone gets used to being basic, so we get less and less varied people”

•Computers inside a persons head get rid of any inconveniences

• Unit/Unette- Title of either a male (unit) or female (unette). Refers corporation perspective of the population as mere pawns in their capitalist agenda.

• Null- Conveys a feeling of boredom or disinterest.

• Bonesprocket- A feeling of shame or humiliation.

• Mal- A state of being under the influence of some sort.

• Meg- An intense, equivalent to "very."

"' We Americans," he said, "are interested only in the consumption of our products"

"When you have the feed for all your life, you're brought up to not think about things"

"Now I am more worried by how this media shell actually insulates us from understanding the world around us"

“When there were no external records that you could refer to, even the outline of your own life lost its sharpness”

“You did not have friends nowadays, you had comrades”

“When you delude yourself into thinking that you see something, you assume that every one else sees the same thing as you”

“Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right”

"He says the language is dying. He thinks words are being debased"

•Isolation from outside world, only seeing material images from the feed•less thought results in less diversity

•No records means loss of personal history•Telescreen overshadowing keeps majority of communication with people in the same job•People all get same thoughts placed in their mind from Big Brother

Feed

1984

“When she said things like It's not a democracy, suddenly I couldn't stand to be on this whole conversation”

“We believe that there is some kind of conspiracy, some kind of secret organization working against the Party, and that you are involved in it. We want to join it and work for it. We are enemies of the Party. We disbelieve in the principles of INGSOC. We are thought-criminals. We are also adulterers. I tell you this because we want to put ourselves at your mercy. If you want us to incriminate ourselves in any other way, we are ready.”

“..you thought that if I had a quarter of a chance I'd denounce you as a thought-criminal and get you killed off? It's this bloody thing that does it,' she said, ripping off the scarlet sash of the Junior Anti-Sex League and flinging it onto a bough.”

“I got my feed later… than some kids.”

“Look at us! You don’t have the feed! You are feed. You’re feed! You’re being eaten”

• Titus does not like to talk about the way life is but Violet likes to talk about it and sees how the Feed takes over everyone’s minds

• Julia a and Winston both see the negative power of the Party so they want to fight for a new life

“‘You are prepared, the two of you, to separate and never see one another again?’ ‘No!’ broke in Julia.”

“So long as they were actually in this room, they both felt, no harm could come to them”

“One of them was a girl whom he often passed in the corridors. He did not know her name, but he knew she worked in the Fiction Department”

"She laughed and touched my face. I felt like I was protecting her from something and that felt good, like I was a man already"

“That is why I kept looking at the girl in gray, and started to want, more than anything else that night, to be with her”

• Violet stood out to Titus like he was drawn to her and they end up having a great relationship where they learn new things about each other and life

• Winston sees Julia and is blown away by her beauty. They fall deeply in love and try to live together were they can be happy while inside their miserable life

1984

“She kept sending me things. I didn’t open them. I let them sit”

“They almost passed one another without a sign; then he turned and followed her, not very eagerly”

“I suppose we may as well say good-by,” she said.

“Sometimes it feels like you’re watching us, not being us”

“Okay, but sometimes, though, I did get worried that she was too smart for me”

• Titus sees how Violet is an outcast because she says stuff that no one understands so he tries to lose connection with her

• Julia and Winston are arrested so they feel that it is the end of them being together and when they see each other soon after, they don’t even recognize each other
