Leadership LIVE 2013 – 2014 4

Leadership LIVE Sessions InformationRoom locations for the spring semester will be communicated via email and will be posted on the Leadership LIVE website.

The abbreviation “LC” indicates the number of Leadership Credits for each session. Leadership Credits are determined by the content of a session in relation to the length of the session. Some sessions may be the same length of time but be worth a different number of Leadership Credits as they are weighted differently due to the content and learning experience.

I. Getting Started: Beginning Your Leadership Journey (1 LC)Presenters: Jennifer Fogerty and Jennifer M. GronskyLeadership Curriculum: Integrity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of Leadership, TeamworkMonday, September 16 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – Hamilton, Room 505 Tuesday, September 17 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium Wednesday, September 18 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – JAH, Room 307

In this first session we will provide you with an overview of what to expect from the Leadership LIVE program.  The presenters will facilitate a discussion on the many conceptualizations of leadership and participants will create a Personal Statement of Leadership which can be used in building your own Leadership Portfolio.

II. Crucible Moments: Identifying Your Transformational Life Experiences (1 LC)Presenter: Katie DamonLeadership Curriculum: Integrity, Personal and Professional DevelopmentMonday, September 30 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium Tuesday, October 1 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – College Building, Herbut Auditorium

What is the most difficult challenge you have ever faced? Leadership experts Warren Bennis and Robert Thomas believe that true leadership comes from the ability to “draw strength from adversity, and create opportunity while others despair.” In this session, we’ll discuss our personal “crucibles”, or transformational life experiences. You will have the opportunity to create a journey line to pinpoint your defining moments, and we’ll consider the leadership skills that are gained from overcoming obstacles.

III. Are You Game? Learning and Applying Leadership (1 LC)Presenter: Sienna ChoiLeadership Curriculum: Principles of Leadership, TeamworkMonday, October 14 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium Tuesday, October 15 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium

Games are all fun and play – or are they? In early childhood, games are actually a developmental tool to help toddlers and children learn about the world and themselves. So what kinds of lessons can you, as a healthcare student and a leader-in-the-making, learn from games? Come play games such as Simon Does Not Say, Pass the Rubik’s Cube, Headbandz and Number Yourself and see what leadership and teamwork skills you can apply from previous leadership experiences. You may be a leader more than you think, but you won’t know until you apply it!

IV. Effective Communication: Using both Verbal and Nonverbal Techniques (1 LC)Presenter: Colleen DempseyLeadership Curriculum: Principles of Leadership, TeamworkMonday, October 28 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium Tuesday, October 29 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium

One of the most distinguishing traits of a leader is the rare ability to communicate effectively. Knowing the right thing to say and how to say it can make or break your leadership tenure, your team, and your organization. Nonverbal communication is equally important as the ability to use language to your advantage. A leader’s attitude, gestures, stance, and appearance all tell people that he or she is a leader. In this session, participants will identify what it takes to satisfactorily communicate information and ideas with both verbal and nonverbal communication.

V. One Step at a Time: Breaking Down the Leadership Journey (2 LC)Presenters: Jennifer Fogerty, Jennifer M. Gronsky, and Cory MillerLeadership Curriculum: Integrity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of LeadershipTuesday, November 12 – 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Hamilton, Connelly Auditorium

In this session, you will have the opportunity to learn from Jefferson Alumni in a unique format. Alumni will be present to discuss the various decisions and experiences that have led them to their current position. We will also distribute a copy of each alum’s career biography. By sharing this information, we hope to offer insight into the varied paths that have led each to success. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet with the alumni in small groups to discuss their career experiences and occasions in which they’ve demonstrated leadership.

VI. Leadership Gets You Hired (1 LC)Presenter: Dayna LevyLeadership Curriculum: Personal and Professional Development, Principles of Leadership

Monday, December 2 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen Auditorium Tuesday, December 3 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – JAH, Solis-Cohen AuditoriumLeadership is the quality employers most seek in job candidates. In fact, employers rank leadership skills higher than one’s major or technical proficiency among attributes most sought in new college graduates (NACE, 2011). In today’s competitive job market, candidates who can demonstrate leadership skills will have an advantage over the competition. Students must effectively articulate their leadership and involvement during the job search to get noticed. Through use of a transferable skills inventory and online tools, participants will gain new strategies for success.

VII. Leading from the Middle (1 LC)Presenter: Paul HowardLeadership Curriculum: Diversity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of Leadership, TeamworkTuesday, January 14 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 15 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Influencing decisions is a true measure of leadership and this influence can be achieved at any level in an organization. In this session learn to lead from the middle. Following this

Page 7: Leadership LIVE Brochure (PDF) - Thomas Jefferson University

Leadership LIVE 2013 – 2014 6

session attendees will appreciate the power of possessing key characteristics such as character, competence, consistency, and trustworthiness in being an effective leader regardless of your job title. This presentation will also dispel the myth that you can only reach your full potential if you are at the top of the organization. The concept of striving to be at the top of your game instead of the top of the organization will be emphasized. The importance of becoming a go-to player by staying in touch with the organization and the environment it operates in will also be discussed.

VIII. Service: The Impact of a Single Act (1 LC)Presenter: Jennifer M. GronskyLeadership Curriculum: Integrity, ServiceMonday, January 27 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

In June 2009, President Obama called on all Americans to make volunteerism and community service part of their daily lives. We have so much power to impact others when we’re not even aware of it, imagine what we could do if we actually directed our energies towards intentionally trying to make a difference. This session will discuss the idea that ordinary people can come together and achieve extraordinary things. Guest speakers will share their experiences with community service and participants will be asked to reflect upon their own level of engagement in service.

IX. Let’s Create a Culture of Emotional Intelligence (1 LC)Presenters: Colleen Dempsey and Mary Hanson-ZalotLeadership Curriculum: Integrity, Personal and Professional DevelopmentMonday, February 10 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 11 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Unique cultures characterize every institution and organization. As health care providers, we are also socialized into the subcultures of our respective disciplines. Aspiring leaders who employ the skills of emotional intelligence will not only be more effective in navigating organizational culture, but will also contribute to the creation of a positive cultural environment. The goal of this session is to prompt participants to cultivate components of emotional intelligence as they interact in a variety of settings.

X. The Power of Introversion (1 LC)Presenter: Jennifer FogertyLeadership Curriculum: Diversity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of LeadershipMonday, February 24 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 25 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

It is estimated that half the people in the world are introverts, however, we live in a world that values extroversion over introversion. This session will focus on the book “Quiet”, in which Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts. Introverts share characteristics that can be translated into powerful leadership styles, such as preferring listening to speaking, being innovative while eschewing self-promotion, exuding calm, and seeking depth over breadth. This session will help you better understand and value introverts, especially if you are an introvert yourself!

XI. Personal Branding: Strategically Brag! (1 LC)Presenter: Cory MillerLeadership Curriculum: Personal and Professional DevelopmentMonday, March 17 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Everyone needs to know their personal brand because regardless of intention it is being communicated to others every day online and in person. While one might be concerned that branding oneself in the marketplace is self-promotion, it increases awareness of one’s abilities and leadership skills to colleagues and potential employers. Learn how to craft a personal mission statement that defines purpose and an effective elevator speech that differentiates an individual from the competition by highlighting unique skills and strengths. Explore online tools and how to best use them in order to consistently and successfully promote a personal brand.

XII. Lead with Integrity: Developing Your Ethical Guidelines (1 LC)Presenters: Katie Damon and Justin HolmanLeadership Curriculum: Diversity, Integrity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of LeadershipMonday, March 31 – 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Ethics give us a baseline for understanding the concepts of right and wrong, but who determines what is right? As future leaders in healthcare, you will be faced with ethical dilemmas on a regular basis, and it is crucial that you have a developed set of personal ethical standards. During this interactive session, you will identify your individual values and morals, and consider resolutions to a variety of ethical scenarios through collaborative group discussion. You will also develop your personal ethical guidelines to guide you in your role as a healthcare professional.

Leadership Portfolio (2 LC)Facilitator: Jennifer FogertyLeadership Curriculum: Personal and Professional Development, Principles of Leadership

The Leadership Portfolio option provides students with an opportunity to illustrate their leadership development through a compilation of their leadership learning and experi-ences. A Leadership Portfolio is an ongoing reflection of the individual accomplishments, skills, activities, programs and other related experiences that have contributed to per-sonal leadership development. Students can use a leadership portfolio when they need to

Page 9: Leadership LIVE Brochure (PDF) - Thomas Jefferson University

Leadership LIVE 2013 – 2014 8

demonstrate their leadership abilities, such as in a job or internship interview. The portfolio will include a personal statement on leadership, resume, listing of leadership experiences, reflective essays on leadership experiences, and an essay on leadership growth. Students will receive detailed information on these requirements, and more information on the Leader-ship Portfolio, in the beginning of the fall semester.

Leadership in Action: Serving the Community (2 LC)Leadership Curriculum: Diversity, Integrity, Personal and Professional Development, Principles of Leadership, Service, Teamwork

Service is an important component of leadership. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to actively engage and reflect upon a service opportunity within the com-munity. A variety of service opportunities will be offered during the fall and spring semesters. Students may select the one that best fits with their own goals and personal philanthropy.

Students completing a service activity, along with submitting a reflection response after the opportunity, will receive TWO Leadership Credits (2LC). Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis; all students must sign-up in advance to participate. Due to popular demand, students may only participate in one service activity per year. However, if space is available in a service activity and no additional students are volunteering, a student may sign up for a second service activity. Please note that a maximum of two Leadership Credits will be awarded regardless of the number of opportunities completed.
