Here is a interesting story I found on line: “Lee was born in Anderson County and came to Pickens County around 1892. He married Estella Thomas fondly known as 'Essie'. Essie and Lee started their life together at the foot of Six Mile Mountain in a log house which was converted into a barn after they built a larger house to accomodate a growing family. They were land owners and worked a farm in a section of Six Mile known as Pea Ridge. Along with a man named Jim White, Lee also bought and sold fertilizer which they hauled from Norris to Six Mile by mule and wagon on a dirt road. As a young man, Lee had attended Gap Hill Methodist Churt but in the early 1920's, after hearing Harold Smith preach, he joined the Baptist Church and was baptized in the Keowee River just above the bridge. Essie was also of the Baptist Faith. In 1925 Lee and Essie left Pea Ridge and moved to Six Mile where they lived out the remainder of their lives. Lee was custodian at the Baptist Church for which he was paid $3.00 per month. His joy was in ringing the bell to remind everyone of church time. Lee would often bring people home for a meal or to stay for a few days and Essie, with her sweet spirit, would prepare food and make them welcome. Essie was a godly woman, a hard worker, a good wife and mother. She had many words of wisdom. Her grandson, Lloyd Pressley remembers about a man jumping in church and Essie saying "It's not how high you jump but how you walk when your feet hit the ground." She would also say "If you want a good neighbor, be one yourself." Lee was a colorful man. He played Harmonica, juice harp and the organ. He loved to sing folk songs and entertained his grandchildren with songs like "Old Jim Crowe", "Preacher and the Bear", and "Fly on the Wall". Essie died 7/7/1942 and Lee died 4/5/1947. They are buried at Six Mile Baptist Church cemetery.” They had eight children:
