This event will be held on Sunday, October 13th, 2013 at the Saratoga National Park-Schuyler House Trail. This is a competitive yet fun and friendly event. There will be an Awards Ceremony for top race performers for Age Groups and Teams. There will be music, snacks and of course, a special tribute to all Military participants. This event will raise awareness for this organization which began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded service members has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they transition back to civilian life. Inspired by this con- fidence, I fly unto thee. Thank you Blessed Mother Mary, for prayers answered, and inter- ceding on my behalf with your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus.

Some Trees Can Be Pruned In WinterMany homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefi t some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they wont bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year.

In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract dis-ease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeown-ers should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree. Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

    * Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one an-other can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

    * Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may ap-pear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

    * Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy trees limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

    * Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

    * Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branch-es and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped. Topping also decreases a trees life expectancy.

Prep Work Important Before PaintingPainting a homes interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-to-date, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpen-sive home improvement project. But that doesnt mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

    * Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

    * Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

    * Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

    * Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you dont plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

    * Purchase painters tape. Painters tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painters tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a homes interior. But even though paint-ing does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Small Changes Make Big Differences This FallBy Sam Erickson

Usually, the term home improvement leads people to think about the physical structures of the placeplumbing, insulation and wiringbut you can improve the look and feel of your home this fall with just a few small changes. You dont have to sign any paperwork with a contractor or spend a lot of money in order to make these changes. Consider changing the colors of your accent pieces. Everyone decorates for Christmas, and having a few pieces of fall that you procure this year and keep from year to year can help bring the outside feeling in. Fall leaves, holly and vegetables like pumpkins and squash will immediately trigger warm associations in your home. Got a big elm in your front yard? When the leaves start to change colors, bring in the best-looking ones, dry them out and arrange them on a coffee or accent table. You could also string them up into the chandelier above your dining room table, adding visual height to the room.

You can create a wall grouping with fall fl air anywhere in your home. Gathering a number of small frames from second-hand stores, you can add whatever items you fi nd that remind you of fall. These might be leaves, swatches of color or even sayings that you have typed and printed out. A cluster allows you to make dramatic change in a small space. Clustering smaller items will add visual interest and encourage the eye to move around the room, making it appear larger.

Consider the front of your home. This is the fi rst thing that people will see as they approach for the holidays, and fall is a good time to spruce up your entry or vestibule. A fall wreath on

the front door can really set the tone. Fall is also a good time to think about fl owers. You wont have the vibrancy of spring fl owers, but you can dramatically alter the way that your home is perceived with several pots of mums.

The kinds of small changes you can make in the fall are only limited by your imagination. Shop fl ea markets, discount stores and thrift stores with an eye out for inexpensive items than can be combined to make a stunning display in your home. You dont have to make major changes to make a major impact on the appearance of your home.

Things To Consider When Shed ShoppingStorage sheds can be invaluable for people who do not have a garage or basement in which to store their outdoor tools and equipment. Sheds also can be a boon to anyone looking to increase the storage space they have at home.

Prefabricated and made-to-order sheds are available for all different budgets and storage needs. Buyers also can choose among build-to-suit kits that can be ordered online or from various re-tailers.

One of the fi rst decisions homeowners need to make when shopping for a storage shed is how much space they need. Think about what you need to house in the shed. Will it hold shovels and the patio umbrella, or will it need to be larger to accommodate a lawn mower? Knowing what you intend to use the shed for will enable you to pick the appropriate size.

Another thing to consider is how long you plan to use the shed. If this is merely a transitional storage building to bide your time until your garage renovation is complete, you may not need an expensive structure made of top-of-the-line materials. If you have a long lifetime planned for this shed, you will want a durable structure and might want to increase your budget.

Before buying a shed, fi nd out if your town, city or province has any zoning rules about sheds. You may need to plan a trip to the municipal building and learn the building codes about erecting a shed. In order to protect the safety and integrity of the area, many towns and cities have specifi c zoning and building laws that need to be followed. A shed of a certain size may require a permit to be built, and knowing this information in advance can save you from taking down the shed and redoing the work at a later date.

Once you know the building codes, you can begin to shop around for a shed. Sheds can vary widely in price. A small, vertical lean-to shed may start out around $350, while a larger, more intricate structure can cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Cost may play a role in the shed you ultimately choose, especially if you are on a fi xed budget.

Available materials also should be studied when buying a shed. While an aluminum shed may not be the most aesthetically appealing option, aluminum sheds tend to be affordable and durable. Wood sheds are available in all different styles and can be very attractive. However, they will have to be maintained to prevent rot and insect infestation. Wood sheds also can be expensive. Vinyl sheds may be the best of both worlds, as they are often durable and require little mainte-nance. Some sheds even enable you to build or add on different components at a later date, so you dont need to start out with the elite model at the outset.

When shopping, consider if you have the skillset to assemble the shed yourself. You can save a considerable amount of money when buying a kit and assembling the shed yourself. Having a shed built off-site and then delivered, or hiring a carpenter to come and build a shed, may cost you just as much in labor as in materials.

Keep in mind that sheds displayed in a warehouse store or outside at a home improvement re-tailer may seem smaller than they will when erected in your yard. Measure your space carefully to ensure that the shed will blend in and not be an eyesore in the yard. Shrubbery can be planted around the shed to help camoufl age it, and the shed also can be color-coordinated with the house to make it appear more cohesive.

The foundation of the shed also needs to be considered. Sheds can rest on cinder blocks, poured concrete or crushed stone. Check with the shed manufacturer as to the best foundation material, and factor that expense into your purchase.

An attractive, functional and affordable shed can be an asset to a home. It provides extra storage space for outdoor equipment, which can free up room in a garage or basement.

Think Big For Your HomeBy Sam Erickson

Fall is the time when kids go back to school and people begin to look forward to the holidays. With the onset of winter weather, youll be spending a lot more time indoors. Everyone has their usual list of fall home maintenance needscleaning the gutters, clearing the patio, adding insu-lation where neededbut this year, you might think big and consider expanding the space where youll be spending all of those winter days and nights. Here are some ideas.

Installing skylights is a great addition for the winter. They bring in natural light, reducing the need for electricity. They also bring in heat, reducing heating costs. More light can also make a house appear larger, giving a facelift to your existing home at minimal cost. If you are having major roof repairs done or a whole new roof installed, this is the perfect time to install those sky-lights. Because they are already there, many roofi ng companies will cut their installation price in half to install skylights.

Finish the basement. Most homes have unfi nished basements which are often used for laundry and a place to collect stuff that doesnt belong anywhere else in the house. Really, the basement is a blank slate in most homes. You could create a game room with a pool table, a music room to bring your band together or a playroom to send the kids to when it gets cold and wet outside. One benefi t to refi nishing a basement is that you can do a lot of the work yourself if you have the tools and the technical know-how. Refi nishing a basement adds value and can help update an older home, giving it a modern feel.

In older homes, the kitchen was often overlooked and treated as a purely functional space. In modern American homes, however, the kitchen is often the centerpiece of the home, and re-modeling your old, stodgy kitchen into a warm, welcoming space can provide you with loads of benefi ts. People spend more time in their kitchens in the cold winter months, and a remodel can make it a place you want to be. Winter is the perfect time for a remodel if you have kids because they will be back in school and not underfoot.

Additions can be expensive and keeping the budget in mind is essential as you prepare. If you are planning on staying in the home for a while, you can think of these as investments in your quality of life. If you are planning on selling your home soon, you can think of these as ways to make your home stand out from the crowd. While it may be too late this year to get on a contractors schedule, its never too late to start putting your planning into high gear.

Space Heater SafetySpace heaters can be an effective method of supplemental heat when the weather outside gets cold, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that space heaters can cause fi res and lead to burns and, when using electrical heaters, may cause electrocution from faulty wiring. When operating a space heat-er, it is important to follow some safety guidelines.* Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from any drapery, bed-ding and fl ammable material.

    * Turn off the heater when you leave the room.

    * Keep the heater on a level surface that is hard and non-fl am-mable.

    * Dont leave the space heater on all night while you are sleep-ing.

    * Never use a portable propane space heater designed for camp-ing outdoors inside a home.

    * Make sure smoke alarms in a home have been tested and bat-teries have been replaced to protect yourself in the event of a space heater-related fi re.

Clear The Deck: Winters ComingBy Sam Erickson

The site of so many good times in the summer, your deck wont see a lot of action through the winter, but to make sure it is in good shape for the coming summer, its good to prepare your outdoor area in the fall. While youre adding storm windows, checking insulation and putting the garden to bed for the win-ter, take some time to take care of that deck as well.

Your fi rst step is to clean your deck thoroughly. Fungus and mildew can build up over the summer, especially in the shade or under potted plants where the deck doesnt dry out for long periods of time. Dirt and rust stains can come from boots or your patio furniture. Through the seasons, youll learn your deck and youll know where youll have to clean each year.

In order to properly maintain your deck, youll want to manage the materials properly. Composite materials require a different kind of maintenance on a different schedule than a cedar plank deck. Check the manufacturers recommendations on how to use each product, cleaning all of the grime before you get start-ed with anything else.

While it may seem counterintuitive, the fi rst thing that youll want to do is to strip away the fi nish that has deteriorated or you dont want any more. Again, be sure that you are using the right product for your cleaning. Try a small test area where the material wont be visible, just in case there is a mistake. Many chemicals in deck repair and maintenance can be toxic or dam-aging. Make sure you are using the right protective equipment and are careful with any excess or spills. Keep children and pets away from the deck while these chemicals are in use.

Once the deck is cleaned and stripped, it is time to reapply the fi nish or stain. Some composite materials will never require this kind of maintenance, but solid cedar decks will need it much more regularly. Finally, youll want to seal the deck with an approved water-repellant. As snow and ice accumulate through the winter months, this protective coating will keep your deck protected through the winter and spring. Water is the enemy of wood, causing it to crack, warp or split as it goes through natural freeze-and-thaw cycles.

If youve ever repaired or replaced a deck, you know that it can come at some considerable time and expense. A little bit of maintenance each year can save you a tremendous hassle, and your deck will be ready for those great times in the spring and all summer long.

Modernize Your Bathroom With A Frameless Glass Shower Enclosure (MS) -- More homeowners are looking to transform their bathrooms into luxurious, relaxing retreats that feature the looks and amenities of an upscale spa. One way to upgrade the appear-ance of a bath -- and to lessen the burden of maintaining it -- is to install a frameless shower enclosure with CLARVISTA glass by PPG, a shower glass that features fused-on coating to keep its showroom looks longer than more traditional clear shower glass. The biggest advantage associated with frameless shower enclosures is that they can add to the overall value of your home if theyre done right. Here are some additional reasons to consider a frameless shower for your new or remodeled bath.

    * Theyre fashionable. Frameless shower enclosures open a world of possibilities because they perfectly complement durable, high-style surfaces used in the bath such as tile, marble and gran-ite. They also provide a great way to show off distinctive shower heads, faucets and fi xtures. Finally, because of their openness and transparency, frameless shower enclosures can make your bath feel bigger than it really is.

    * Theyre versatile. Frameless doors can be designed to fi t any space, making them ideal for bathrooms large and small. And they dont have to be boxy -- frameless shower enclosures can be circular, oval or triangular. Even standard square or rectangular enclosures can be dressed up with an artfully bowed, patterned or etched glass door.

    * Theyre durable. Frameless shower enclosures look elegant, but one of their most redeeming

qualities is toughness. Standard shower glasses can range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch, which makes them sturdy, structurally sound and safe. Watertight seals prevent leakage, and because there is little to no metal used in frameless enclosures, homeowners never have to worry about replacing corroded parts.

    * Theyre easy to live with. Lets face it: we all want to live in our homes for as long as we can. Frameless shower enclosures are a great way to let your home age with you because the entry can be leveled with the fl oor to create easy access as you become older and less mobile. And frameless glass shower enclosures dont become passe -- they offer a great way to meld timeless style with ageless accommodation.

    * Theyre easy to clean. With frameless shower enclosures, there are fewer nooks and crannies where dirt and grime can accumulate, making them easier to clean than other shower styles. For an added level of clarity and sparkle, homeowners should request Clarvista glass by PPG. The coating for Clarvista glass is fused to the glass, which makes the surface almost impervious to corrosion from water deposits, humidity, soap scum and household cleaners. Simply wipe the wet glass every few days with a dry towel or squeegee, and your shower enclosure can look as new as the fi rst day you had it installed.

How To Invite More Natural Light Into Your HomeA dark home can be dreary and drain residents energy levels rather quickly. Natural light has the power to make a person feel more energized, and it also can buoy spirits. As a result, many homeowners want to increase the amount of natural light in their homes.

Increasing natural sunlight in a home reduces reliance on interior lighting. This reduces energy bills and lowers the homes carbon footprint. Natural light also can help people in a home feel happier and more content.

According to the National Institutes of Health, some people experience serious mood changes during the winter months. Dubbed seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, this condition may be effectively treated with light therapy. Exposure to more light can alleviate fatigue, loss of interest and sad or anxious feelings. Homeowners looking to increase the natural light in their homes, be it for medical or aesthetic reasons, can do so in a variety of ways.

    * Keep the drapes open. Opening blinds and curtains as far as they will go allows as much light to shine in without having to do major home renovations or spend any money at all. Homeown-ers concerned about privacy can install a window fi lm that allows viewing from the inside only.

    * Clean the windows. Dirty windows obstruct sunlight from entering the home. They also can make a home appear unkempt. Spend a free day cleaning the windows so that theyll let ample light in.

    * Install seamless or low-profi le windows and doors. Seamless sliding doors enable a large amount of light to enter the home. Such doors can replace an entire wall to brighten up a dark area of a home. The more windows and doors a home has, the brighter it will be.

    * Take inventory of dark spots. A room may be dark because it simply does not have a layout con-ducive to brightness. Is a wall blocking light from reaching a portion of the room? Think about changing the rooms layout or even making structural changes to improve light distribution. The addition of a small window on a south- or west-facing wall can greatly improve natural light. Using mirrors can also refl ect light where it is needed.

    * Invest in skylights or solar tubes. Both skylights or solar tubes enable light to enter a home from above. Skylights are larger and require considerably more work to install, while solar tubes are more low-profi le and can be put into rooms that do not abut the roofl ine, such as those obstructed by attic space. The tubular cylinders are installed between the roof and the ceiling and carry light through a refl ective tube to the room below. Diffusers on tubular daylighting devices scatter the rays so the light doesnt cast harsh shadows, and UV fi lters can help protect furniture from discoloring.

    * Trim shrubs and trees. If trees and bushes are blocking light from entering your home, trim them to enable dappled light to come through. Deciduous trees that will naturally lose their leaves come autumn can be planted on sunny areas of the property. This way in the summer months they will shade the house and keep it cooler, while in winter more sun will stream in when the leaves are shed.

    * Create a three-season room. Make a spot in the home where sun will be at a premium. A solarium or greenhouse attached to the home can be a warm and sunny spot.

Increasing natural light in a home can improve feelings of well-being and also reduce energy consumption during daylight hours.

New windows may allow more natural light to enter a home.
