The em-ployees raised the funds through events such as a bake sale, Haunted Asylum, donor card sale, and a calendar raffl e. “Com-munity Resource Federal Credit Union has been a strong com-munity partner, working year-round to raise funds that directly support the Sheridan Hollow Drop-In Center,” said Eric Guz-man, Marketing Coordinator for Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. “The employees have also volunteered their time working with the kids in the Summer Youth Program and serv-ing the holiday meal,” he added. IPH’s Sheridan Hollow Drop-In Center has reached capacity. To keep up with the community need, IPH plans to purchase a new building in the same neigh-borhood in 2014. At the same time, the shelter will expand its programs, which encourage self-suffi ciency, empowerment, and stability amongst homeless and low-income families.

SELF-THERAPY FOR THE STUTTERER

It is written to and for the many adults and teens that stutter. The 192-page book is available at most public libraries including those in Delmar, Cohoes, Guilder-land, Loudonville, and Ravena. Handsome and stately- that’s Licorice. This great pittie mix is looking for a home.

Hi there, I’m Scarlet. I have a torbie coat - that means tiger with orange. My fur is medium length and real

soft. My former family had young kids and a dog, and I got along fine with everybody. Then a new baby came along, and became allergic to me. So here I am, and I’m a little confused by this big change in my life.

That’s why I seem a little shy. But I like to be petted and after I get to know you I get over my shyness. You

can brush me and that will help us bond, and keep my coat looking its best. I’m still young and playful so

we can have lots of fun together.

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costello, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of mak-ing lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veter-ans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private dona-tions provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an aver-age of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which features historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOLS,

THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER WANTS YOU TO BE PART OF WORLDQUESTCAPITAL DISTRICT - The In-ternational Center of the Capital Region is happy to invite area high schools to participate in our first annu-al Regional Academic World-Quest Competition which is scheduled to take place on March 8, 9:00 AM at the Polish Community Center. Academic WorldQuest is a flagship education program that tests high school stu-dents’ knowledge of inter-national affairs. In the com-petition, four-person teams compete by answering 100 multiple-choice questions. The winner of our regional competition will move onto attend the national com-petition in Washington, DC on April 26, representing our region. The Interna-tional Center of the Capital Region will fund the travel and lodging for this winning team and their coach. Call (518) 708-7608.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BUILDER(MS) -- Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, ex-perience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same.

Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, off ers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own.

* Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s repu-tation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for ist-self. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to off er their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red fl ag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off .

* Find a builder who is fl exible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be fl ex-ible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.

* Look for a builder who does more than build. A good build-er should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualifi ed professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engi-neers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the commu-nity and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be.

* Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your oppor-tunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in work-ing with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifi ce on quality when building a new home.

More information on selecting the right builder is available online at www.pace2000homes.com.
