HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER IS AS CLOSE AS

YOUR LIBRARYCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

The housing market has be-gun to heat up thanks to an economy on the rebound. Few people aspire to rent for life, and home ownership is a dream shared by both na-tives and immigrants who came to the country seeking a better life.

Each year the National Asso-ciation of Realtors compiles a profi le of buyers and sell-ers that documents trends in the real estate market. Al-though the majority of fi rst-time home buyers identify as white, the next largest group are Hispanics, who account for 11 percent of the market of fi rst-time home buyers.

The rapidly growing Hispanic population is infl uencing all areas of modern living, in-cluding real estate. Estimates suggest that, between now and 2020, Hispanics, the sec-ond largest ethnic group in America, will account for 50 percent of new home buyers.

Over the last three decades, two of every fi ve newcomers to the housing market were Hispanic, according to the

National Association of His-panic Real Estate Profession-als. In addition to needing as-sistance fi nding their dream homes, Hispanic buyers also may need help securing loans to fi nance their upcom-ing home purchases.

Just this year ezDinero.com launched a multinational online alternate lending so-lution that helps fi rst-time borrowers connect with top experts who specialize in personal loans. The com-pany works directly with the Spanish-speaking market and serves as a mediator be-tween lenders and borrow-ers. The service is one of the few reputable online compa-nies that can help fi rst-time borrowers fi nd fi nancial so-lutions that meet their exact specifi cations and connect them with the top lenders in the industry.

Marina H. Gonzales, Director of Public Relations at ezDine-ro, states that there is a need for this type of bilingual ser-vice for the Spanish-speaking audience, which is under-served in the United States.

“ezDinero was created with the intent of giving the Span-ish-speaking population an opportunity to meet their personal lending needs, es-pecially for fi rst-time borrow-ers,” Gonzales said.

This alternative lending so-lution is not the only option available to Hispanics. Some people fi nd success through government assistance and grant programs geared to-ward the Hispanic commu-nity. The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Pro-fessionals can be an excellent resource for further informa-tion, instructing people on how to apply for loans, se-cure lower interest rates and qualify for loans even if you have a poor or brief credit history.

Hispanics wield more infl u-ence in the United States than ever before, and more and more Hispanics are mak-ing that infl uence known in the real estate market.

Businesses, particularly small businesses, understand the importance of establishing an online presence. Identifying new content strategies can help keep a company’s name and business motto fresh in the minds of consumers. Search engine optimization, or SEO, and social media use can greatly improve a business’ on-line visibility.

Podcasting is another tool small businesses have at their disposal. Podcasts, often re-ferred to as on-demand audio content or audiocasts, are usu-ally short audio or video clips. Typically they’re episodic and are released at key intervals. Podcasting enables listeners to determine when and where they would like to receive content. Podcasts can be in-formative, entertaining or a combination of both. All that’s needed to tune in is a mobile device or Internet access.

Although podcasting was once a way to present on-demand radio and other audio pro-gramming, businesses have redesigned podcasting to use them for training and market-ing and as another avenue to disseminate marketing mate-

THE BENEFITS OF BUSINESS PODCASTING

rials to the public and a target market. As opposed to visiting a website or reading newslet-ters and emails, podcasts are often described as more cus-tomer-friendly and accessible.

There are several ways busi-nesses can benefi t from pod-casting, including:

· Businesses can distribute valuable content to increase customer loyalty.

· Podcasts enable you to be an industry and news trend pro-vider, which can set you apart from the competition.

· Audio and video are very en-gaging media and can keep customers engaged for longer periods of time.

· Podcasts increase marketing reach and online visibility and can strengthen SEO.

· Syndication and repeat scheduling gives listeners a reason to keep coming back for more content.

· Podcasts can be promoted through social media channels to make online marketing ef-forts even more cohesive.

· Downloads of podcasts and transcripts can be off ered di-rectly from your company’s

website to drive even more traffi c to the location.

· It’s possible to measure the success of digital audio be-cause it can be tracked by the number of downloads and the number of social interactions with the content.

· Podcasts work with the con-sumer’s schedule. If they are unable to listen to a podcast immediately, they can down-load content and enjoy it on their own time.

· Podcasts reach anyone around the world with an In-ternet connection, dramati-cally increasing your potential customer base.

· Content that is creative and fun shows an entirely new side of your business.

Consistent podcasts can be a great way to share information about your business and im-prove your online presence. A 20- or 30-minute podcast may be better received than a bar-rage of marketing emails or a monthly newsletter

In the future, cars may not be built and assembled at automotive warehouses and factories full of automated robots. They may be the product of more effi cient manufacturing thanks to 3D printing, which can pro-duce relatively inexpensive, light and effi cient automo-biles. One pioneer, Jim Kor, founder of the Urbee 2, a 3D-printed vehicle, made a three-wheel, two-passenger vehicle with plastic through Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. This involves spray-ing molten polymer layer by layer to build the car chas-sis. The entire car, which is roughly 10 feet long, took about 2,500 hours to build. What would normally be several pieces of metal and other components in a tradi-tional car is now made from fewer and larger pieces that result in a lighter vehicle. And a car with less weight can use fuel more effi cient-ly. Vehicles that are made through 3D printing may be the wave of the future, potentially revolutionizing automobile construction. SC143981

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organiza-tion that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move to-ward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with stu-dents on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while develop-

ing a relationship that pro-vides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This pro-gram focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless pos-sibilities while empowering them to make it happen”.

The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].
