EFFECTIVE USE OF PROCESS SIMULATION PACKAGES IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING COURSES
Process Simulation is the discipline of designing a model of an actual or theoretical physical system, executing the model on a digital computer, and analyzing the execution output.
Simulation embodies the principle of “learning by doing” --- to learn about the system we must first build a model of some sort and then operate the model.
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING COURSES & SIMULATION SOFTWARES
YEAR ONE Basic Sciences and Mathematical Methods YEAR TWO Basic Chemical Engineering Calculations Material and Energy Balances Mathematical Method II YEAR THREE Unit Operations Fluid Transport Thermodynamics Reactive Systems (Kinetics) YEAR FOUR Chemical Engineering Analysis (Process Modeling) Reaction Engineering Plant Design and Operations
YEAR FIVE Advanced Chemical Analysis Design Project Process Control Process Optimization
Picture a tank with a pipe flowing in and a pipe flowing out. You can change the valve controlling the water that flows in, but the outflow rate depends on the diameter of the outflow pipe (which is constant) and the pressure in the tank (which varies with the water level). The system has some very nonlinear characteristics.
