Sinn Féin TD, Brian Stanley, is demanding that the Government immediately announce their decision on the futures of both Abbeyleix and Shaen hospitals now that they have received recommendations from the HSE. Stanley said “There was never a greater need for both hospitals given the increase in the number of older people requiring their services. Considering the numerous cases of private nursing homes with major problems being closed, excellent public facilities such as Shaen and Abbeyleix must be maintained and expanded. The decision on both has been delayed long enough and Ministers Reilly and Lynch must not stall on this any longer. The patients, their families and staff have been through enough.” Sean Fleming T.D. has been informed in the Dáil on the 22nd January that the Department of Health had received a recommendation from the Health Service Executive in relation to the future of Abbeyleix District Hospital, and St. Brigid’s Hospital Shaen, Portlaoise. No information has been given in relation to the contents of this review which was carried out by designated officer and approved by the Chief Executive of the HSE. The report is now being considered by officials in the Minister’s Department and the submission in relation to the recommendations from the HSE will be prepared for the Minister shortly. Sean Fleming has asked the Minister for Health to immediately confirm a decision that both DECISION TIME FOR GOV ON ABBEYLEIX AND SHAEN hospitals will continue in operation into the future in their present format and to end all the uncertainty immediately. Now that the report has been finalised by the HSE and is in the Minister’s Department the Minister should announce the decision. A new energy project that will see the development of huge wind farms across the midlands will bring much needed investment and funds to the local economy. Many landowners in Laois look set to reap the benefits of the project that will export energy to the UK, with each wind turbine worth an estimated €25000 a year to farmers and landowners.Charlie Flanagan has welcomed the commitment which will see Ireland the the UK work closely together through trade in renewable energy. Deputy Flanagan was speaking after Minister Pat Rabbitte signed a memorandum of understanding with his British counterpart Edward Davey which will allow Ireland to export wind generated electricity to Britain.“I very much welcome this announcement as the Midlands counties of Laois and Offaly in particular are primed to benefit from this agreement. There are a number of major wind farm operators who have already committed to locating in the Midlands and this agreement will allow these projects to proceed in time”“There is considerable political commitment to ensure that this relationship with the UK can succeed. I understand that there are a number of technical and legislative hurdles to negotiate first however the Government is determined to reach an intergovernmental agreement with the UK which will provide a formal basis for energy trading”“The results of this will see considerable direct benefits for Laois and Offaly. I will remain in contact with the various interest groups to ensure that the Midlands can maximise its potential from this industry which, if harnessed correctly, can provide significant job opportunities for the region.”

Laois County Council will carry out works this year in Shanahoe that will provide a drainage system for the Village at a cost of almost €50,000.Sinn Féin TD, Brian Stanley had been demanding a new drainage system to be installed in Shanahoe to resolve serious flooding problems in the village. Local residents have put up with this problem for long enough. Three different spots in the village have been flooding badly for years with one particular loca-tion flooded almost permanently. This causes huge problems and inconvenience locally as children can’t walk to school and people are unable to walk through it for funerals. During heavy rain the front of one house and adjoining farmyard has water flowing in and local motorists have been stuck in the floods. The situation is so bad that a householder has on occasion had to try to draw water off the road in a slurry tank.“The local tidy towns group is doing great work and this is holding back their efforts to improve the appearance of the village. Local groups like this deserve support and Lao-is County Council must play its part. As far as I am aware, this is the only village in Laois that has almost permanent flooding in the middle of it and large potholes are form-ing in the flooded area.” Stanley continued “There is

no working drainage system in the village. The old drainage pipe serving Clash Cross at one end of Shanahoe has collapsed and is not functioning, while a soak pit installed beside the road has also ceased working. The only permanent solution is the provi-sion of a new drainage system to take water towards the River Nore and then other sections of the village could be connected in to the new system.” He concluded “I have been raising this problem with senior staff in Laois County Council and lobbying to have a new drainage system installed. The current situation can’t be allowed to continue year after year, a solution is long overdue and action is now needed.”

Wedding Wines Portlaoise Community Men's Shed will be holding their first public meeting on the Wednesday, Febuary 6 at Portlaoise Parish Centre from 8-10pm. Men’s sheds have been established for a range of reasons. At the heart lies some common interest that is shared, and often involved activities built around arts, crafts and technical skills – the kind of things done in the backyard shed. Rather than work on those interests alone, a community shed introduces a social interac-tion among the participants that is an important part of well being. The interest of the group develops from that interest and copious tea to expand the range of things that they do.

Men’s sheds are not the same as a franchise – they are all different! The character and operations of the shed are a reflection of their niche in their community. That niche has elements including:•The skills, experience and capacities of their members;•The physical, financial and other resources that they have available;•The needs and opportunities that exist in their commu-nity.

Men’s sheds are a particular kind of social enterprise. That means they operate much like any other enter-prise, working to achieve defined objectives that are both social and financial. The financial outcomes are designed to support the pursuit of social objectives, making the key difference from other enterprises that

pursue objectives to benefit the enterprise owners

The only country in the Northern Hemisphere to have an association is Ireland, where the Irish Men’s Sheds Association was established in 2011 to sup-port the development and sustainability of Men’s Sheds.[8] The member Sheds of the Irish Association are from both Nothern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. One notable difference between the Men’s Sheds in Austalia and Ireland is the age demographic of the participating men; in Ireland men of all ages participate while in Australia it is mostly retired men.

The vision for men’s sheds is to:•Provide support to men in need of help arising from mental illness or other debilitating illnesses;•Ease the transition of men from full-time employment to other activities in retirement;•Provide an additional link between the primary health network and the many men who have no regu-lar contact with that network;•Establish a place for men that enabled social interaction and activities to maintain the health and wellbeing of those men;•Build a culture in the sheds where all men are wel-come and where mutual respect and trust are para-mount;•Become a focal point in the community for the identi-fication of men’s health issues and actions to resolve those issues.

WHELAN WELCOMES ADDITIONAL 2,000 CE PLACES Labour Senator John Whelan has welcomed news of 2,000 additional places on the Commu-nity Employment (CE) programme today. These new places announced by Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton T.D., will bring the total number of CE places to 25,300 this year. The Department of Social Protection will spend more than €1 billion on activation programmes and other supports this year to help jobseekers acquire the work experience, skills and quali-fications needed to return to full-time employment. The 2,000 additional places announced will specifically target the growing number of long-term unemployed, as well as other welfare claimants who are over a year in receipt of payments. This is part of a concerted and wider effort by the Department of Social Protection to help jobseekers to become employment-ready and find a job, training or educational opportunity. In Budget 2013, Minister Burton secured €11 million in additional funding for 10,000 extra activation places of which nearly half will consist of placements in Tús (2,500) and CE schemes (2,000). "I welcome the priority given to schemes and organisations who are involved in the delivery of community childcare services, and social and healthcare services for people with a disability. An allocation of 500 additional places to be reserved for childcare support, will also be pro-vided as well as 500 additional places for social and health related services. I also welcome the fact that 100 places will be reserved for organisations with new and innovative approaches and models of delivery. I believe innovative thinking is vital to our economic recovery. "This announcement in combination with the other activation measures will help combat long-term unemployment affecting many within our country and in Laois. "This is particularly positive and especially heartening as I am all too aware of the amount of valuable work carried out and conducted by community employment schemes throughout Laois. I have been listening over the past year to the concerns of supervisors and sponsors over attempts in some official quarters to undermine and underfund community employment schemes. I am glad, however, that Minister Burton heeded our representations and has real-ised the important training, labour activation and community contribution of CE Schemes."I would like to see Laois schemes take the opportunity to expand and for the local authority to take up the new CE format tailored towards and ring-fenced for County Councils. These are real and not just notional opportunities. “Existing CE schemes can apply for additional places in the normal way by applying to their local Department of Social Protection office. This can be done at roll-over of the scheme. Schemes that are mid-term can also make a submission to their local office. Schemes can contact their local Social Protection office for further details. “A separate application process has been established for ‘Innovatory Projects’, which will com-mence from February 4th onwards. Schemes can contact their local Social Protection office for further details. "I would like to encourage existing CE schemes in Laois to consider applying for the additional places and organisations, who believe they can improve the level of their services by being included on a CE scheme, to avail of the Innovatory Project scheme."

Flanagan welcomes funding for local Gathering events in LaoisCharlie Flanagan has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, that a number of events have received funding for the Gathering events taking place throughout the county in 2013. “I am delighted with the announcement that funding has been allocated to over 20 Gathering events and activities in Laois. 2013 is shaping up to be a big year in tourism for this country and with today’s announcement of €2 million in funding for Gathering activities nationwide, people right across Laois can get involved and encourage friends and family living abroad to come home and celebrate these fun-filled events”“One of the highlights of the Gathering in County Laois will be the first James Fintan Lawlor Summer School which will take place in August. This event will be in addition to over 20 flagship events and community gatherings across the county which have been funded as a result of a €1M philanthropic donation by IPB Insurance that was matched by the Gathering Ireland”The list of events taking place in towns and villages across Laois can be found on www.thegatheringireland.

Fleming criticises ComReg failure to protect mobile phone consumers Fianna Fáil member of the Public Accounts Committee Seán Fleming has criticised a major failure on the part of the Communications Regulator to protect mobile phone users, in particular those with smart phones. This information came to light during today’s Public Accounts Committee meeting with Alex Chisholm, Chairman of the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg).Deputy Fleming said: “At today’s meeting I questioned the Communications Regulator about the poor mobile signal coverage in parts of the country. Mr. Chisholm eventually confirmed that in the case of the Vodafone licence, 99% coverage of the population was required in their 2G licence which covered traditional mobile phones. Mr. Chisholm then conceded this was reduced to 85% for the 3G licences required by smart phones.“I also learned that for other mobile phone operators such as O2, Meteor, 3, and Tesco the coverage requirement by the Regulator is less than 85% in their individual licences.“It is now clear that mobile phone users who purchased smart phones and have struggled to receive adequate signal coverage have been let down by the Communications Regulator who failed abysmally to communicate this to the public. Once again, serious questions arise about the efficacy of a regulator whose remit is to serve the public interest.“I am calling on Mr. Chisholm to review how ComReg has handled this issue and to report back to the Committee. People spending scarce resources on expensive mobile phones have a right to expect that their regulatory system is working to protect them.

PoliticsShock news for health service in Monasterevin – Fleming In a shock move, the HSE has decided to shut down the busy health centre in Monasterevin Co Kildare.According to information received by Fianna Fáil Deputy Seán Fleming, staff have just been informed of the news without warning.Deputy Fleming has described it as a major blow to the health services in the region.“This will come as a complete shock to the communities that this busy health centre has served over the years,” Deputy Fleming said.“It is a disgraceful attack on the local health services. The centre currently provides a range of services to a population of approximately 7,000 people in Monasterevin and surrounding areas. These people will now be forced to travel further for treatment and join longer queues elsewhere. “My fear is that this is just the thin end of the wedge and marks the beginning of a deterioration of services in the Leinster-Midland region. I am also aware that the regional management of the HSE have issues letters to review requirments for all health centres in the region 'in the context of reducing budgets (revenue and capital) and the activities at each health centre'. "I am calling on the Minister for Health James Reilly and the HSE to immediately put a stop this and explain exactly what the strategy is in relation to community health services in this region.”

Fleming secures funding for Durrow-Abbeyleix-Portlaoise bus route The National Transport Authority (NTA) has agreed to provide a financial contribution to support a local bus service in Laois. The agreement was secure by Fianna Fáil TD Seán Fleming with NTA chief executive Gerry Murphy at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee today. The NTA which is the licensing body for bus services has today agreed to make a Public Service Obligation (PSO) subsidy available on the Portlaoise / Abbeyleix / Durrow / Cullahill / Johnstown / Urlingford route. The route was abandoned by Bus Éireann last year which deprived people of a local service and a vital link to and from Dublin and Cork.Deputy Fleming said: “Since Bus Éireann withdrew the service M&A Coaches have been providing a bus service three times a day in each direction on this route without any support from the NTA or the Department of Social Protection for the free bus passes. Consequently the route is not economical and its continued viability is in doubt without some change.“This is a new departure for the NTA they are now for the first time subsidising a private bus service on a route previously served by Bus Éireann but since abandoned.“The NTA will advertise the licence for this route in February. The amount of the subsidy is not being publicly disclosed in advance but will be made known during the licensing application period.Deputy Fleming hopes that this new subsidy will make this service financially viable. “I hope many people in the area will use this new service to secure its long-term future as a very important local service in the area.”

Government abandons commitment on climate change - StanleySinn Féin Spokesperson on the Environment, Community & Local Government, Brian Stanley TD, has called on the government to explain why “they have abandoned their commitment to introduce a Climate Change Bill in the agreed time frame.”Stanley said “It was supposed to be published before summer 2012, then we were told December and they failed to do so. Responding to my questions yesterday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has revealed that there is no Climate Change Bill and there won’t be one until the government introduce a so-called ‘low carbon bill’. The Taoiseach must know that there is no need for a ‘low carbon bill’ and this is yet another excuse. This government continues to run away from their responsibilities on the environment.Last year we were promised such a bill. Then Minister Hogan relegated the bill to a road map, while in December - as he headed for the Climate Change conference in Doha - he promised that the heads of a climate change bill would be published in December. Yet nothing has happened. Two years in power and the government is fobbing off the Dáil on this important issue.Minister Hogan is now President of the EU Environmental Council and he still refuses to produce a climate change bill. This is both embarrassing and destructive. It is only by introducing a robust Climate change bill will we be able to tackle the negative effects of global warming.

Stanley calls for re-instatement of Bus Eireann Portlaoise-Urlingford bus service Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley has today expressed disappointment that the contract for the bus service from Portlaoise to Urlingford has been terminated at the request of the service provider, M&A Coaches. Stanley said " I have been informed today by the National Transport Authority that M & A Coaches have requested that they approve the termination of their contract to provide services on the Portlaoise to Johnstown corridor as they cannot sustain the financial losses on the route. The NTA has agreed to the termination from 8th February but they intend to re-tender for the service shortly provided some subsidy is made available. In the meantime the NTA will endeavour to ensure that a service is in place during the tender period to avoid any break in service. I believe that this route will only be viable if it is re-instated as part of the Bus Eireann Dublin to Cork route again, and I am calling for this to happen in order to secure the future of this service."

Flanagan welcomes road funding for LaoisLaois Offaly TD Charlie Flanagan has welcomed the latest allocation of road funding for Laois. Laois has been allocated nearly €6.7 million in regional and local road funding for 2013. This is in addition to €1.4m that was allocated to Laois County Council last week from the NRA. "I am pleased that over €8m has been allocated to Laois in the past week to maintain and improve the roads in the county for 2013. €750,000 has been allocated to the complete the necessary works on the Borris Road in Portlaoise. This funding is imperative to maintain the regional and local roads around the county. I have arranged a meeting with Minister Vardakar this week to seek priority funding for the Southern Circular Route in Portlaoise which will be the site of 6 new primary schools in the near future. This route will see a considerable increase in September once the new schools open.

Burton forces 44% of Lone Par-ents off Community Employment – FlemingFianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Sean Fleming can reveal that the government has implemented a cut of 44% in the number of lone parents on Community Employment (CE). The information has been revealed in a reply to a Parliamentary Question to Minister Joan Burton. At the start of January 2012 there were 4,650 lone parents in Community Employment but as a direct result of budget changes implemented by Minister Burton, this has fallen to 2,591 as of January 21st 2013. The Minister has forced 2,059 lone parents off Community Employment schemes in just one year. Deputy Fleming commented: “Since Minister Burton decided lone parents would have to give up the One-Parent Family payment to remain on a CE scheme, there has been a massive but inevitable drop-off in the number of lone parent participants. “Before Joan Burton set about deliberately excluding lone parents from Community Employment, 20% of CE participants were lone parents. That figure now stands at just 11%.” Deputy Fleming asked: “Is Minister Burton intent on driving every last lone parent off Community Employ-ment? “Many of these people would have been working on childcare and community projects which would im-prove their job prospects through training. This is the worst attack on lone parents by a government which clearly has no vision for how social support structures should be working to help people to secure meaning-ful employment.”

GEORGE CLOONEY’S IRISH ROOTSThe Real Descendants Kilkenny filmmaker Gabriel Murray will premiere his documentary George Clooney’s Irish Roots at Dunamaise Arts Centre on Friday 1st February at 8pm. Filmed on location in Laois, Kilkenny and Waterford, the film traces the emigration of George Clooney’s Irish ancestor Nicholas Clooney, from Kilkenny to Kentucky during the Great Famine of 1847. The documentary also involved an intensive search for George’s Irish links, as well as the discovery of his ancestral home.Narrated by Mike Murphy, one of Ireland's best renowned television presenters, the film includes interviews with George Clooney and Bono as well as local historians; Professor Walter Walsh, Joseph Kennedy, Mary Egan and Ned Egan. The documentary focuses on Fiona Clooney from Abbeyleix and her search for her connection with the Kentucky Clooneys. Fiona originally made the initial contact with George’s father Nicholas in 2008, when he came to Ireland in search of his Irish roots. He was inspired to make this visit, because of letters from the 1930’s, between Fiona’s Gran-aunt Sarah Clooney and Rosemary Clooney. The documentary which was produced by Michael Watchorn, Pat Power and Andy Ring, contains several soundtracks featuring contributions from Rosemary Clooney, Finbarr and Roisín Clancy, The Corrigans, Abbeyfolk, Louise Florence, Peter Molly and The Fenians. Kilkenny actor Donie Ryan recites Dawn of the Irish Coast by John Locke and Director of McDonagh Junction, Donie Butler also explains the discovery of unmarked famine graves, where some of the Clooneys perished. To add to the vast collection of research on the film, the director also includes material on Ireland’s most famous Clooney lookalikes Jeremy Kenny and David Glendon, the latter who received over one million hits on Google after he won a ‘George Clooney Lookalike Competition’.

In this documentary, an array of historical research and forgotten history has been uncovered featuring over 1500 files of video clips, maps and archives that have been lost for generations and link George Clooney to his lost ancestors. A sub-section in the story explores the Clooney family’s links with the Titanic, the Izod Estate and Captain Patrick Clooney, prominent in the 1798 Rebellion.Tickets for the Irish premiere of George Clooney’s Irish Roots are €10 and

available from the Dunamaise Arts Centre Box Office Tel: 057 8663355 or online at www.dunamaise.ie . The filmpremiere is also part of a special spring promotion at the Dunamaise Arts Centre where tickets for 8 films can be purchased for only €30.

big guns to begin new music night

A new musical venture kicks off with a bang this month as Egan’s Music Venure announced it’s line up for the start of February.Beginning with well known local acts SoulSet on Saturday, February 2 and Rain Dogs on Saturday, February 9, the first in what could be a series of big name bands will take to the stage on Saturday, February 16 - Blue Moose.Firmly established as Ireland’s most in demand wedding & cover band, Bluemoose are constantly on tour bringing their energetic and entertaining live show to packed venues throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. Over a decade of touring experience has graced the band with the tools to stage a live show

which rivals the atmosphere of an international music festival. With their ever evolving repertoire of classic rock, dirty pop and anthemic show stoppers combined with the sight, the sound and the smell of a huge rock concert Bluemoose bring the meaning of the term “cover band” to a whole new level.Blue Moose are no strangers to all the country’s biggest venues, and are a regular fixture in legendary Dublin watering hole - Copper Face JacksAfter Blue Moose on February 16, another Egan’s speciality resumes for 2013 - a Project X theme night.Expect all the usual fun and games of a theme night in Egans, such as fire breathers, dancers and so much more.

big bang music fest in pipeline

Almost a year ago, Laois bands I am Godzilla, You are Japan; and Rain Dogs performed a fundraiser for the Laois SPCA with the goal of raising a thousand euro. Having landed a few euro short of their target, the bands have now set about organising an even bigger event for 2013 to help the hard working Laois animal rescue. The idea is simple - over the course

of a fortnight a series of gigs will be held throughout the county. Bands will donate their time for each night in exchange for the bar making a donation to the cause. It is hoped a gig can be run in every large town in Laois as part of the series.Venues and bands wishing to participate should contact Dara on 087 9835678.

Blue MooseThe Fureys & Davey ArthurDunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise – Saturday 9th February 2013 Legends of Irish music & song The FUREYS & DAVEY ARTHUR will make their 9th appearance in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise on Saturday 9th February. The band was formed in 1978, literally by accident. George, Paul and Davey were playing in Denmark with their own band called The Buskers and Eddie and Finbar, while touring in Germany, were involved in a road accident. When George, Paul and Davey got news of the accident they immediately travelled to Germany to be with their brothers. They then decided that they should all be playing together and this was the start of The Fureys and Davey Arthur.Inevitably changes have occurred over 30 years. Their brother Paul died suddenly in June 2002 and Finbar left the band in December 1996, however George, Eddie and Davey Arthur have continued to delight audiences on their tours and have just released a new CD ‘Songs Through the Years’.The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation in Edinburgh with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell, now all famous in their own right. In 1969 with his brother Finbar, he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. In 1971 Eddie moved to mainland Europe where he toured for seven years with Finbar, building up a huge following particularly in Germany. Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics has credited Eddie as teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England while Dave was still a teenager. The band became an instant success and had a string of hits including When you were Sweet Sixteen, The Green Fields of France, Red Rose Café, The Old Man, Steal Away, Her Father Didn’t Like me Anyway, Clare to Here and Leaving Nancy. The Fureys & Davey Arthur are responsible for some of the most stirring music ever to capture the public imagination. Their folk based music has received standing ovations in some of the biggest concert halls of the world and they credit their musical ability to their parents, Ted and Nora, who were well known musicians themselves. They encouraged their sons to play music from a very early age and there was live traditional music in their house almost nightly.Over the years some of their greatest admirers have ranged from the neighbours they grew up with in Ballyfermot to the top sports people and politicians of the world and have performed for leaders such as former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Irish President Mary McAleese and Pope John Paul. Tony Blair has publicly stated that his favourite peace song of all time is the Fureys “Green Fields of France”. Their emotive songs stir many emotions….tears and laughter, sadness and joy.A Fureys concert is always a night to remember.Tickets are priced €25/€23 and on sale from the box office Tel: 057 8663355 or online at www.dunamaise.ie .

Also Showing:LincolnIn Steven Spielberg’s historical epic ‘Lincoln’, Dan-iel Day-Lewis takes on the role of the revered US president, portraying his struggle not only against the Confederate army but also within his own circle as he fights to end slavery in his country.Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) and Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black) also star in ‘Lincoln’, the monu-mental tale of the man who shaped America.

Les MiserableBased on the world’s longest running stage musical, ‘Les Misérables’ follows the fortunes of ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) in 19th century Paris as he is hunted down by policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after breaking his parole. When he meets a factory worker and her young daughter, their destinies become entwined forever. This epic tale of the strength of human spirit features smash hit songs including ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and ranks Anne Hathaway (‘One Day’) and Helena Bon-ham Carter amongst its stellar ensemble.

The ImpossibleBased on true events that occurred during 2004’s Southeast Asia tsunami, ‘The Impossible’ stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as holidaying parents who are thrown into the midst of one of the world’s most devastating natural disasters. The powerful story documents their experiences of tragedy, loss and enduring human spirit that was stirred up by the deadly wave.‘The Impossible’ is directed by emerging Spanish Director Juan Antonio Bayona.

Zero Dark ThirtyFrom the team behind ‘The Hurt Locker’, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ follows the 10-year US quest to find Osama bin Laden.Starring Chris Pratt (Moneyball), the film details the operation to bring the world’s most wanted man to justice, from the early stages of the hunt to the special ops mission that culminated in his death at the hands of SEAL Team Six in 2011.‘Zero Dark Thirty’ also stars Jessica Chastain (The Help) and Joel Edgerton (Warrior).

The D may be silent, but the ass-kicking Tarantino-cinema is loud and bloody! Anyone who is familiar with Tarantino’s movies and inimitable style would have been rubbing their hands in excited glee when they heard that he was taking a shot at making a film set during the slavery-loving wild west of America. The film’s cast is, as you’d except, wall-to-wall quality including the old Tarantino stalwart Samuel L. Jack-son and with new fan favourite Christoph Waltz again delivering a top drawer performance as cross country bounty hunter, Dr. King Schulz.Jamie Foxx’s Django is rescued from slavery by Schulz on his ability to be able to identity a hefty bounty he intends on collecting by any means neces-sary and the pair form an unlikely alliance, teaming up to deliver the court’s justice across a few states. While on the hunt for the original bounty Schulz learns of Django’s desire to be reunited with his wife

SILENT BUT DEADLY

and once they collect said Bounty, he helps Django locate his wife and they hatch a plan to find and res-cue her from the grips of Leonardo DiCaprio’s slave-owning Calvin Candie. DiCaprio doesn’t seem to make bad movies these days and doesn’t turn in bad performaces, and combined with Tarantino’s ability to pull great performances out of actors he nails every line and beat. The star of this film, unquestionably, is Samuel L. Jackson. He steals every scene, every line and every laugh. Jackson’s Stephen is a very set in his ways Butler who provides the biggest laughs from the moment he opens his mouth. As to be expected with Tarantino, this film is not for the light-hearted, featuring typical over-the-top violence, buckets of blood, buckets of bullets and language to make your toes curl and catch yourself laughing when part of you feels guilty for it!

More than one in three Europeans would spend more to buy an environmentally friendly car, even though 71 per cent say they have reduced overall spending as a result of the economic recession, a Ford Motor Company-sponsored poll shows. The survey also showed 53 per cent consider climate change to be the world’s biggest issue and 57 per cent would prefer to lead a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.“The survey shows that, even in economically difficult times, there is a clear desire for vehicles that are more environmentally friendly,” said Barb Samard-zich, vice president Product Development, Ford of Europe. “Ford is extremely focused on meeting this demand now and in the future, and this goes hand-in-hand with delivering products that help reduce running costs.”Ford commissioned the survey, which was conducted by ‘The Futures Company’, a leading consultancy, to better understand the opinions and attitudes of Eu-ropeans across a range of mobility issues – from car sharing to green driving to the future of the internal combustion engine. The survey showed that for 71 per cent, fuel-efficien-cy is a major factor in choosing a car; 60 per cent

prefer to choose models from carmakers that have targeted a reduction in their environmental impact; and 68 per cent consider fuel-efficiency when driving. In 2013, Ford will introduce its first ever zero-tailpipe emissions passenger car, the Focus Electric, to Europe to be joined later by hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Also, the new Ford Fiesta offers more engines that can achieve sub-100 g/km CO2 emissions than any other small car nameplate. Its combination of ad-vanced new engines, fuel-saving technologies and aerodynamic improvements ensure an unrivalled seven powertrains achieve sub-100 g/km CO2 emis-sions and deliver optimised fuel efficiency. The Ford Eco Mode coaching system, now avail-able in the Fiesta as well, rewards drivers for using fuel-efficient driving techniques by displaying up to five ‘petals’ on each of three ‘flowers’ that represent gear-shifting, speed and anticipation. Ford customer training has found that eco-driving skills can result in ten per cent long-term fuel savings.“The majority of car buyers prefer fuel-efficient vehi-cles, even if only a minority feel they can afford to in-vest in one, given the current economic climate,” said Andreas Ostendorf, vice president, Sustainability, Environment & Safety Engineering, Ford of Europe.

The continuing expansion of the new Dacia brand has arrived in Laois as Joe Mallon Motors has been named as the official dealers for the brand in Laois.Dacia, launched in Ireland in July 2012, has already seen phenomenal growth in its short six months in Ireland. Its family crossover, the Duster, the most affordable vehicle in its class, has been test-driven by over 2,000 people in Ireland and sales have been hugely successful, with 500 orders since launch. Just last week, the second Dacia model was launched, the five-door spacious supermini Sandero, and is available at a hugely competitive prices from just €99 a month.Further news for this rapidly expanding brand is that Dacia has appointed a further ten new dealers to sell its popular and budget-friendly vehicles, which will see the addition of the Sandero Stepway and the Logan later in the year. One of the fastest growing brands in Europe, Dacia is now the fastest growing network in Ireland, with 20 Dacia dealers around the country.“Ireland’s fastest growing network has just got bigger! We are delighted to welcome ten new Dacia dealers, bringing the number of dealers to 20. Following the response we’ve had since launch of the brand last July, there has been a lot of interest in the dealerships and we will continue to recruit new dealers. Dacia is the smart buy brand and we are seeing people with older vehicles, and those who may have considered buying second hand cars, choose the smart buy, a brand new Dacia at shockingly affordable prices,” Patrick Magee, Sales & Network Director, Dacia Ireland, said.

The Ford Focus retained its title as Ire-land’s top selling car in 2012, accord-ing to figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). The Focus joined Ford’s C-MAX and Gal-axy as top sellers in their respective segments.Focus sold a total of 3,738 units during the year to top the sales chart, placing the nameplate 382 units ahead of its nearest competitor, the VW Golf. The Fiesta also retained its place as one of Ireland’s favourites by selling 2,151 units, a level of sales that guaranteed it a top ten spot at seventh place.“In a tough year for car sales, with the market down some 12 per cent, we are delighted that Focus was again the number one choice for Irish motor-ists. Its great mix of stylish design and cutting-edge technologies continues to keep Focus at the top of motorists’ wish-lists.“We would expect 2013 to be another

challenging year in the industry, with car sales finishing perhaps in the same region as the 2012 total of 79,500. The new 131/132 registration system will undoubtedly help to spread the tradi-tional January rush for the new regis-tration plate but it could be a year or two before the full effect of the change is felt,” Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland, commented.Meanwhile, Volkswagen became the best-selling car brand in Ireland for the first time in the company’s history, despite the fact that the iconic Beetle was once built in Ireland.Volkswagen finished in first place ahead of Toyota in second place and Ford in third place. Volkswagen registered 10,073 new cars in 2012 (12.67% market share) ahead of Toyota’s 9,998 (12.58% market share) and Ford with 8,592 (10.81% market share).

“We are delighted to be now, officially, the number one car brand in Ireland,” said Volkswagen Passenger Cars Deputy Brand Director John Donegan.“This is an outstanding result in what were tough market conditions in 2012. Given that this result was achieved even before the new Golf had arrived shows that Irish customers are navi-gating to the Volk-swagen range for its qual-ity, strong residual values and our strong retail of-fers.”This was a senti-ment

FORD FOCUS NAMED IRELAND’S FAVOURITE

echoed by Volkswagen Group Ireland Managing Director Simon Elliott. “We are very proud to be the best-selling car brand for 2012 and it is an indica-tion of just how shrewd the Irish buyer is when it comes to choosing cars that they are increasingly putting their trust in Volkswagen.”

boxing boom continues in laoisKnuckles Boxing Club, continuing to go from strength to strength in it’s first year, hosted a four club tournament before Christmas in it’s gym in Mountrath. The bouts featured many of the new members of the club from youths up to adults, going up against boxers from the Curragh, St. Cronans of Roscrea, St. Pauls, and Corpus Christi. There as plenty of local talent on show, made all the more impressive as virtually all the members of Knuckles have been only recently taken up the sport under club founder Noel Carroll.Knuckles members have also been regularly travelling down to Kilkenny to take part in bouts, gaining valuable competition experience as they develop their new skills. The success of the club underlines the growing popularity of the sport in the county, with Portarlington also establishing a boxing club in recent months.Portarlington ABC recently had a registration day and a large turnout from the locality turned out to join.Portarlington A.B.C. is dedicated to providing the youth of the community with an organization which instills sportsmanship, fair play, physical conditioning,

mental and emotional health. Boxers develop self confidence and self esteem while learning self-defence and self control. These virtues are instilled by the Club, coaches and Committee members in the training of the youth and in the boxing programs.

The objective is to promote and develop amateur boxing for the benefits of all amateur boxers of all ages and abilities, in accordance with the standard under the rules prescribed by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (I.A.B.A) and the Laois County Board.

22 FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2013SPORTMaryborough v CR Forrest CCFL Division 4A 27-1-2013 Maryborough 3 CR Forrest 3

Maryborough entertained CR Forrest in very typical Irish weather. The overnight rain made conditions tricky but the pitch held up well. Maryborough went into the match hoping to break a run of two months without a victory and saw this match as the per-fect chance as CR have yet to register a win in the league. With the sun coming out in time for kick off Marybor-ough made the perfect start. With 3 minutes on the clock a long shot by Sean O'Driscoll was only parried by the keeper and half cleared by the CR defence. The clearance fell to Seamus Lawless who rifled the ball into the roof of the net from 25 yards out, a con-tender for goal of the season. But once again Maryborough's main flaw came back to haunt them. Instead of building on the lead they let CR back into it 3 minutes later. A long kick out from CR was not cleared and let the CR attacker one on one with the keeper. He calmly slid the ball past the onrushing keeper to equalise. As they have shown in the past, Maryborough came straight back and showed extra determination to get a second goal. They dominated the rest of the half. Creating numerous chances, coming close through Conor Brennan, Keith Bray, Colm Phelan and Adam Mulhall. They went into half time with the scores level but should have scored at least two goals and they were subsequently punished for it.Just 4 minutes into the second half CR took a sur-prise lead, from a corner the CR attacker powered his header in. Again Maryborough went on the front foot and 2 minutes later Seamus Lawless made it 2 all after a great counter attack.Maryborough took the lead on 62 minutes, Seamus Lawless flicking the ball onto Sean O'Driscoll to get his 15th goal of the season. From then on it was all CR attacks. Maryborough tried to find a fourth but never had any meaningful attack and slowly began to sit back and let CR attack. It was a risky move and was punished with 4 minutes to go. A corner from CR was not cleared properly, with CR having three shots on goals, all blocked, finally with their fourth attempt the ball was bundled in. It was a deserved goal for CR and they held off some late pressure to secure the draw.Over the 90 minutes it was the right result but in reality it was two points dropped by Maryborough. The game should have been over as a contest by half time with Maryborough having 12 shots on goal. It was out of character for Maryborough as they have scored with ease over the season so far. Their defence has improved over the past couple of games but once again lapses of concentration have cost them vital points. In a disappointing day captain Sea-mus Lawless led his team from the front and put in a man of the match performance.Although they're not mathematically out of the promo-tion places it will take a lot of results going there way to have a chance. With less pressure on them hope-fully they will show the potential of the team in the last 3 league fixtures and carry that into the Division 4 cup. The next league match is away to Portarlington Town next Sunday. Kick off is 11am.

Maryborough: Shaen O'Grady, Tony Keenan(Nathan Da Silva 70mins), Garreth Dunne(James Maher 60mins), Philip Lewis, Conor Brennan, Keith Bray, Seamus Lawless(Shane Tynan 80mins), Colm Phelan, Willie Bland(Mark McDonald 74mins), Sean O'Driscoll, Adam Mulhall(Dan Langan 49mins).

NAPPER’S INVINCIBLES ONE AWAY FROM TITLEThe Laois Darts ‘B’ Final takes place this Friday, Feb-ruary 1 in Naomi’s, Mountmellick, as Napper Tandy’s seek to finish their season undefeated and claim their maiden title against a resurgent Mountrath side, The Pub.In what has been described by most veterans of the B league as the most competitive league yet, Stradbally’s Napper Tandys topped the league without tasting defeat and had their spot booked in the final before Christmas.Their challengers however, had to do things the hard way after finishing fourth in the league tables. The Pub ended Murphy’s run of 6 B finals in a row by defeating the Ballylinan side in the quarter-finals, before pulling off a major upset by beating second placed Kehoe’s in the semi-finals.Peaking at just the right time, The Pub have hit form at exactly the right time, narrowing the odds going into the final. Both teams take to the oche to decide this season’s B league championship at 9.30pm in Naomi’s, Mountmellick.

Notes:

Dawn Delaney won the inaugural Ryan’s Darts Championship at the weekend, defeating Stephen Greene in a keenly fought contest. The Ladies title was claimed by Peggy McIlroy.

The Men’s Premier League resumes on Wednes-day, February 6 in Naomi’s Mountmellick at 9pm.

Once again the C.C.F.L only managed to get 16 of their scheduled programme of games played over the weekend as the torrential rain paid havoc with the fixture listHowever there were some very significant results in the games that were played and none more so than in the Senior Division where Arlington did it again when they defeated leaders Mullingar Athletic by three goals to two and while putting a huge dent in the Mullingar sides title ambitions, it also moves the Port men away from the relegation worries that had crept into view. Having already taken the scalp of Willow Park this season Arlington have proven that on their day they can match any team in the league. In Division 2 Walsh Islands title challenge ended after they fell to a one nil home defeat to Gentex, but Noreside continue to show excellent form when they put five past Coolraine without reply to keep their slim chances alive. In Division 3B Banagher are now certainly the team to catch following their 3-0 home win over neighbours Gallen United. While Frankford and Clara Town seconds will fight all the way to the end it is now Banagher’s to loose.Only one game survived the weather in Division 4A where Maryborough and C.R Forest played out a well contested three all draw. Two goals from Sean O’Driscoll and another from Seamus Lawless gave the Portlaoise outfit the advantage until a late goal forced a share of the spoils for Cool Raven as Maryborough were left to rue several missed chances in the first half.In underage action it is hats off to Ballinahown Under 19’s who forced their way into the second round of the Leinster Under 19 Cup courtesy of a penalty shootout victory over a strong looking Swords Celtic side in a game played on the excellent all weather pitch in the AIT.No such luck up the road however for Willow Park Under 17’s who missed out on a place in the quarter finals of the FAI Under 17 Cup following a 4-3 heartbreaking defeat

to Newbridge Town. Willow were in fact leading 3-1 going into the last 15 minutes and Newbridge had their first choice goalkeeper sent off. However the replacement keeper made two incredible saves after coming on and inspired his side to an unlikely comeback. In underage League action Newbridge Town’s Under 18’s made it a day to remember for the club when they accounted for Portlaoise by four goals to no reply. Two more strikes from the profilic Jamie Evans along with efforts from Joe Darcy and Dylan McDermott made it comfortable for the Under 18 Divisional leaders. The Division 1 Cup got underway at the weekend and in spite of the weather three games were played. The highlight of these must be Shinrone’s 3-1 win away to a good Mullingar Town second team. Shinrone made the long journey worth their while as goals from Philip Murphy, Derek McLoughlin and Ray Cordial earned the south Offaly men a place in the second round where they will have a home game against Gracefield Athletic. In the Division 4 Cup Portarlington Town qualified for a second round meeting with Saint Aengus following their easy five nil success over Mountmellick United seconds. John Ricard put Port in front after 15 minutes. The same player doubled their advantage before the break when he turned in a centre from Willie Dowling. Chris Booth made it 3-0 early in the second half with man of the match Dowling again supplying the crucial pass. Although Mountmellick tried hard to get back into the game Town were always dangerous on the break and they punished Mountmellick again when Pauric Duffy slotted home after being sent through by Brendan McNair. In the closing minutes Town emptied their bench and two of the replacements Will Moore and Seanchaill O’Reilly combined for the latter to fire home the fifth and final goal.

PORTLAOISE LADIES BEST BLACKROCK

A depleted Portlaoise squad travelled to Blackrock RFC on Sunday hoping that quality not quantity would prevail in this Paul Flood Leinster Senior Cup game.Portlaoise began the game battling not only the opposition but a gale force wind which immediately put them on the back foot. Despite this Portlaoise managed to pressurise Blackrock into conceding a line out on their twenty two. However Portlaoise failed to se-cure possession from the set piece and Blackrock counter attacked to score the opening try of the game. Balck-rock continued to use the wind to their advantage and managed to score and convert a second try 15 minutes later despite Portlaoise playing a lot of rugby in the opposition half. Blackrock then went in search of a third try before half time but some excellent defending from the Portlaoise team saw Blackrock held up on the line twice and prevented any further score in the half. The second half saw both teams endure hail and sleet making playing conditions very difficult. Despite these horrendous handling conditions Port-laoise immediately put their back line

to use and following a great passage of play involving the entire back line, dual status player Sarah Johnson ran in a try for Portlaoise in the corner. It was then Portlaoise’s turn to use the gale wind to their advantage and some excellent territorial kicking from Claire O’Connell and Yvonne Delaney forced the Blackrock back three into making errors. The Portlaoise pack continued to pressurise the Blackrock line and were held up twice. Jean Moore then showed excellent awareness to halt Blackrock’s former international Tania Rosser’s attempt at a quick restart. This resulted in Portlaoise stealing possession and following some more patient and disciplined rucking, fittingly Jean Moore crossed the line to leave the score 12-10 with 15 minutes to go. Rhona Julian then made another of her now trade mark breaks up the centre of the pitch and was a t the receiving end of a dangerous high tackle which left Blackrock depleted to fourteen. Portlaoise capitalised on the numeri-cal advantage keeping Blackrock in their twenty two defending desperately. Claire O’Connell then turned over pos-session which was the start of a move from the Portlaoise pack deserving of try of the season. Jean Moore offload-ed to Tanala Kehoe who executed a perfectly placed blind pass which found

Niamh Griffin’s excellent run through and there was no stopping the scrum half from that distance. Blackrock returned to full strength and continued to go in search of the match winning score with five minutes remain-ing. Strong scrummaging from the pack also prevented Blackrock having clean ball and the determined Portlaoise defence held firm with strong tackling from Stephanie Gleeson, Rhona Julian, Carrie Connell and Sarah Johnson ensuring that Blackrock did not break through the centre.Portlaoise are now in a very strong

position to qualify for the AIL Senior Cup and face St. Mary’s at home this weekend. All support appreciated. Training continues Tuesday and Friday nights in Togher at 7.30pm.

Team: Judith Smullen, Diane Lawlor, Jean Moore, Joanna Tasak, Lorraine Dela-hunty, Alison Holmes, Claire O’Connell, Tanale, Kehoe, Niamh Griffin, Yvonne Delaney, Karen Plunkett, Carrie Con-nell, Sarah Johnson, Zara Healy, Cas-sie Dunne, Stephanie Gleeson, Rhona Julian.

This was always going to be a closely contested game with Tullamore on the top spot in the Leinster league.Portlaoise opened the score after 10 min into the game, Dillon fehan broke through the centre and paved the way for Lee Davis to run trough for a try. After five minutes Tullamore responded with a great penalty kick to make it 5-3 to the home side. Some great runs from both forwards made a very close game and Tullam-ore came up with the goods when a block down was rewarded with a try and duly converted with 5 min to go in first half.It was portlaoise’s Theo Kavanagh who made a fantastic run from within his own have to run in under the posts for the try. 10-10 at the break.Three minutes into the second have Theo Kavanagh was on he war path again with another try for Portlaoise. It was tit for tat the whole was through this game, with some great play from each side. Tullamore converted with anexcellent kicker. Full time score Port-laoise15 Tullamore13. Portlaoise 17 Carlow 5Portlaoise entertained Carlow at home on Saturday the 20th of January, Portlaoise needed to win this match to qualify for the last four.Carlow and Portlaoise met previously and there was nothing between the sides, The Carlow side were very strong and fed a lot of ball through there centres. The Portlaoise pack were in good form rucked from the 22 the allow Conor Kelly to cross the line for a well worked try.Tom Martin was next over the line with a fine individual try. Conor Kelly converted to bring the score to 12 points to nil in favour of PortlaoisePortlaoise kept up the pressure and held Carlow scoreless in the first half.Tom Martin scored again with a great phase of play which saw the ball cross the full width of the pitch.Portlaoise kept Carlow in their own half for nearly the entire 2nd half; Niall Hearns was unfortunate where he was stopped short of the Carlow line on two occasions.Carlow eventually scored in the last minute of normal time but failed to convert.Portlaoise came out 17 points to 5 winners at the end. This win means that Portlaoise have now qualified for the Semi Final of the Leinster Premier League and await the outcome of the other group.
