Let’s go on an adventure of discovery!

Your Task:To investigate Earth’s landforms and discover how they are made! You must proceed with caution!All around you things will be destroyed and built up! • Rocks change shape, size and/or form due to water or ice movement, freeze and thaw, wind, plant growth, gases in the air, pollution and catastrophic events such as earthquakes, mass wasting, flooding and volcanic activity

Process 1:Weathering• Weathering is a group of processes that break down rocks and sediment into smaller particles.

• Some weathering processes take a long time to occur, while some weathering processes occur quickly.

• Weathering can be caused by water, wind, ice, or plant roots.

Process 2:

Erosion• Erosion is a process that transports rock, soil or sediment to a different location.

•Water, wind and ice physically remove and carry (erosion) rock, soil and sediment and deposit the material in a new location.

•Erosion is a “destructive process”

Process 3: Deposition• Deposition happens when erosion deposits the material in a new location.

•The material builds up to make new landforms.

• Deposition is a “constructive” process

Process 4: Flooding• Flooding is when water rises and overflows onto dry land.

•Water saturates the ground and washes away eroded rocks, soil and sediment. The water expands to cover more land and recedes back to its normal banks.

•Flooding is a “constructive” and “destructive” process

Process 5:Glacial Movement• The very slow movement of glaciers

•Glaciers are a large body of ice moving slowly down a slope or valley or spreading outward on a land surface

•Glaciers erode the land and deposit the land in new places.

•Glaciers are a “destructive” and “constructive” processes.

•What would the movement of a glacier do to a mountain?

Process 6:Earthquakes• A shaking or trembling of the earth that is caused by volcanic or tectonic activity

•As plates in the earth move past each other and cause friction, they create a vibration that makes the earth shake and move.

•Earthquakes are a “destructive” process

Process 7:

Volcanic Activity• Molten or hot rock and steam coming out of a vent in the crust of the earth

• A hill or mountain made up of material that comes out of a whole or crack in the earth

• Something of explosively violent potential

• Volcanic activity is a “destructive” and “constructive” process.
