Years To Build....
Seconds To Tear Down. Roughly twenty-seven years ago, the desire
to make Lago a com-
pany safe for its employees was put on a formal basis. Although
the
average man caters to safety and attempts to avoid hurt,
various
programs and pieces of personal protective equipment were not
readily
accepted. The story is oft told of the ridicule accompanied by
laugh-
ter provoked by the sight of the first safety hat on Lago’s
premises.
Safety programs were new and sometimes considered time
consuming,
but the intrepid missionaries of safety ordained to Lago's field
of
safety persisted. They demonstrated, proved, suggested and
instruct-
ed. It took a long time for the employee body to swing over
completely
to the safe way of working, but it did. And when it became safe,
Lago
went all the way. National Safety Council contest results attest
this
fact.
In the ten-year pericd between 1948 and 1958, Lago took five
first
place honors in the NSC contests. The employees of Lago earned
first
place awards consecutively in 1957 and 1958.
It took many years to build safety consciousness into the
program
of safe working at Lago. Unfortunately, it takes only seconds to
tear
down a large segment of all that safety stands for. This quite
clearly
was pointed out carly this month. Lago employeees worked the
first
two months of this year without a disabling injury. Then in
rapid suc-
cession there were two disabling injuries in two days.
The principle to be drawn is that the hard work and thought
that
goes into building a safety program is needed constantly to
maintain it.
It is also to be recognized that accomplishments in the field of
safety,
as anything else, are easier lost than gained. It takes hard
work, plan-
ning, foresight and eniployee understanding and unity to build
the safe
refinery that is Lago. Nothing exists in active industrial life
that can
rest on its laurels. Competitively, other businesses within the
industry
will do all they can to wrest away leadership. The leader is
always the
figure lesser lights challenge; the leader has to maintain a
progressive,
enlightened approach to stave off surges of others. While safety
is not
a face-to-face struggle with other companies, it must be
approached
with the same amount of determination as if it were. In safety,
ag-
gressiveness and vigor of concentration must come from within.
No
one can push a company into safety. It’s the employees,
themselves,
who make the company safe by constantly striving for the safe
way.
Unfortunately, some leaders relax because they are at the top.
With
that approach, however, they will be at the top only
momentarily.
Relax in safety and quickly all that has gone on before will
crumble
in seconds. Safety, more than anything else, demands constant
aware-
ness. Even leaders have accidents.

The first day of April yearly
fails to go by without some men- tion of a celebrity visiting
the
island of Aruba. One year the
airport was literally stormed by throngs eager to catch a
glimpse
of Marilyn Monroe. Another year
the tale was spread of Joe Di- Maggio visiting the island.
This
year, in case you weren't "'told,”
it was popular singer and movie
star, Nat King Cole. But Nat got a little further than other
April 1 celebrities. He not only made the island, but was going to
tour La- go. For some reason, unknown, to
be sure, the tour never materializ-
ed. Wonder why? Perhaps Tour Leader Sev Luydens knows. He was
scheduled to take King Cole on the fictional tour.
It's a good thing Dave Garro- way came in when he did. Had he
landed April 1, he would have been victimized by the fool's jokes
that go with that day. Surely no one would have believed him.
Calendar Contest Stirring Activity In Photo Ranks
Since the announcement that La- go again will select pictures
for its 1960 calendar from the ranks of photographers within its
employee
body, there has been a definite scur- |rying about in camera
cliques. Color work done the past year is being
|reviewed by the owners, others are
out shooting, still others are plan- |ning and looking. How
about you? If you have a camera, an eye for|
|beauty that is truly representative |of Aruba, get some color
film in that camera and take pictures fitting |the style of Lago’s
annual calendar.
The contest is open to all employ-
ees and annuitants. Last year, the Public Relations Department

en 12 of some of the best pictures ever to adorn a Lago
calendar. To

addition to having the picture in
the all-important calendar. There's
time; the contest doesn’t close until

Three long-service employees will
complete their compatly service in
the next f months. Two have al-
ready left Lago, the third is prepa-
ring to do so. Heading the list in
service is Garvice V. Roby, a veteran
employee of over 33 years’ vice
Mr. Roby has left Aruba preceding
retirement July 1. Next is Segundo
A. Thijsen, who will retire May
with over 28 years of service. The
third is Anton P. C. Gongriep, for
over 26 years a Lago employee, who
has also left the island preceding re-
tirement July 1
Mr. Roby, who completed his com-
pany service as coordinator refine-
ry loss activities in the Pro De-
partment, was first employed by the
Standard Oil Company (Indiana) at
Wyoming Aug. 18, 1925.

Visit Aruba The community of Aruba, being the excellent host
it always is, welcomed with open arms and eager eyes three of
the Royal Netherlands Navy’s finest man of wars. On visit to Aruba,
for different periods of time, from March 20 to March 25, were HRMS
Karel Doorman, an aircraft carrier, and destroyers HRMS Amsterdam
and HRMS Gelderland.
The destroyers, bearing fleet identification of D 189 and D 811,
with the aircraft carrier and the submarine Zeeleeuw, which did not
visit Aruba, were part of a flotilla that left Holland Jan. 10,
1959, crossed the Atlantic Ocean and visited the East Coast of the
United States. As the group moved south it took part in maneuvers
through the Caribbean.
The two destroyers berthed in Oran- jestad Harbor in the early
evening March 20. One of the first visitors on the Gelderland was
Temp. Lt. Gov. E. Arends, who was officially welcomed aboard in
smart naval style. The des- troyers remained in Aruba until dusk
March 23. During their stay here, both ships were open to the
public. The air- craft carrier moved its large hulk into the
Oranjestad Harbor area March 23, left March 25. She did not berth
inside the harbor, but sat at anchor outside the harbor’s
protecting reef. The Karel Doorman was also opened to the public.
Visiting the carrier, however, was some- thing more of an
experience than visit- ing the two destroyers at dockside. Visitors
were ferried to the carrier aboard government, private and carrier
launches. The demand was so great to go aboard the huge ship that
many had to be disappointed. There just wasn’t enough time or
sufficient numbers of small vessels to carry the throngs desiring
to visit the Doorman.

Wins Colts And Test
Aruba St. Eustatius Team Defeats Visiting Cricketers
Playing their annual Easter weekend colts and test matches at
the Lago Sport Park were the St. Eustatius clubs of Aruba and
Curacao. The Aruba club proved the victor in both matches,
defeating the visit- ing team quite handily both times. Bowling the
first ball in the test
match was General Manager W. A. Murray.
The test victory, which took place
over two days, resulted in the Aru-
ba St Eustatius Cricket Club re-
taining permanent possession of the
trophy annually in competition. The
trophy went to the team winning
twice in Aruba, Victory was almost
inevitable after Aruba’s _ sterling
performance Sunday, particularly its
first bat. Up first, the Aruba club
scored 216 runs for the loss of six
wickets. Halley and Flanders were
primarily responsible for the im-
pressive lead, top-scoring with 70
and 42, respectively. In its turn at
the wicket, the Curacao team fared
poorly, scoring but 39 runs. Slow
bowlers Havertong, Krind and Hoft-
ijzer maintained the upper hand
throughout the match with their
skillful deliveries.
The following day brought little
encouragement to the cricket team
from Curacao. Before lunch time, the visiting players had lost
nine
wickets for 40 runs. Following lunch, the Curacao team hung on
valliant-
ly taking the score to a more res-
pectable 77. Aruba’s Krind, however,
was the master bowler during these
innings and set Curacao down.

THE ARUBA Easter weekend matches with the
St. Eustatius Cricket Club made a clean sweep of its

Unlike the test match, Curacao
batted first in the colts match play-
ed Saturday afternoon. The visitors,
dominated by Aruba’s bowlers
which seemingly was the pattern
set the entire weekend, were weak
and scored but 92 runs. Aruba bounded back with 192 runs for the
loss of six wickets in 120 minutes.
The victory surge was led by top-
scoring Anthony Perrotte with 96
before he was run out. In addition
to the Aruba high scorer, support-
ing runs were won by De Weeve, 36; W. Smith, 25 and Gumbs,
17.
Outstanding Players The best all-rounders of the test
match were J. Beazer for Curacao
and P. Flanders for Aruba. Cricket-
ers C. Lopes of the visiting team
and J. Halley of the home club won
highest score and batting average
honors. B. Henriquez of Curacao’ and
L. Krind of Aruba were top in bowl-
ing average. C. Lopes of Curacao
was also recognized for most catches
taken. In the colts contest, W. Sprott of
Curacao and A. Perrotte of Aruba
were the high scorers. W. Mills and
G. Dossett of Curacao and Aruba, | respectively, took the most
wickets.

Jamaica Refinery Planned by Essosa
Esso Standard Oil S. A. and the Jamaican Government have signed
an agreement to build the island's first oil refinery. The refinery
will cost between $18 and §20 million
(U.S.)
The initial capacity of the refine- ry is expected to be about
26,000b/d. It is anticipated that the output will be consumed on
the island of Ja- maica and other Caribbean markets. The Jamaican
refinery will be Esso’s first refinery in the group of islands
forming the Federation of the West Indies. Both Shell and Texaco
