To those of us who live and work in the Greater Los Angeles area, earthquakes and other natural emergencies are a reality. In order to deal with this situation, emergency preparedness must become a way of life. Here are a few essential earthquake preparedness tips.

• If you’re in a HIGH-RISE BUILDING, and you are not near a desk or table, move against an interior wall, and protect your head with your arms. Do not use the elevators. Stay indoors, glass windows can dislodge during the quake and sail for hundreds of feet.

• If you’re OUTDOORS, move to a clear area, away from trees, signs, buildings, or electrical wires and poles.

• If you’re on a SIDEWALK NEAR BUILDINGS, duck into a doorway to protect yourself from falling bricks, glass, plaster, and other debris. If you’re DRIVING, pull over to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses, power lines, and other hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over.

• If you’re in a CROWDED STORE OR ANOTHER PUBLIC PLACE, do not rush for exits. Move away from display shelves containing objects that could fall.

• If you’re in a STADIUM OR THEATER, stay in your seat and protect your head with your arms. Do not try to leave until the shaking is over. Then leave in a calm, orderly manner. Avoid rushing toward exits.

• When you feel an earthquake, DUCK UNDER A DESK OR STURDY TABLE. Stay away from windows, bookcases, file cabinets, heavy mirrors, hanging plants, and other heavy objects that could fall. Watch out for falling plaster and ceiling tiles.

• Always know all the POSSIBLE WAYS TO EXIT your house and work place in emergency situations. Try to discover exits that would only be available to you in an emergency (windows).

• A good rule of thumb is to store 5 GALLONS OF BOTTLED WATER per person. Treat your pet as a family member when thinking about how much to store.

• DO NOT STORE ANY PLASTIC WATER CONTAINER DIRECTLY ON CONCRETE. The concrete will leech chemicals into the water, contaminating it and also degrading the plastic bottle.

• DON’T USE MATCHES, CANDLES, OR OIL LAMPS, especially right after the quake. Aftershocks are coming and they could cause candles or oil lamps to fall, causing fires. Immediately after an earthquake there is the danger of natural gas or propane leaks and any source of flame could cause an explosion. Make sure you have a Flashlight or battery-operated lantern for the home (plus extra batteries and rotate them).

POTASSIUM-RICH DIET TIED TO LOWER STROKE RISK People who get plenty of potassium-rich foods in their diet may be less likely to suffer a stroke, a new research review finds. The review, of 11 studies following more than 247,000 adults, found that as potassium intake went up, participants’ risk of suffering a stroke went down.

That does not prove that potassium, itself, deserves the credit. But the foods highest in the mineral -- including many fruits and vegetables -- are considered generally healthy choices.

So the findings support experts’ advice that people eat more fruits and vegetables to help cut their risk of cardiovascular disease and other ills, the researchers report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Potassium is an important mineral that helps regulate the heartbeat, conduct nerve

impulses and contract muscles. Most adults need about 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day.

Potassium is found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, with potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, plums and raisins among the richest sources. Other sources include beans, dairy, nuts and molasses.

In theory, a diet with enough potassium could trim a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke because the mineral helps lower blood pressure.

There are some people, however, who may need to be careful about potassium intake and should ask their doctors before consuming more of the mineral. They include people with kidney disease, which can reduce the body’s ability to clear potassium, and those on certain blood pressure drugs.

MAQUI BERRY

ORAC: Developed by food nutrition researchers at Tufts University’s USDA sponsored Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, the ORAC test measures a food’s antioxidant ability to neutralize free radicals and potentially mitigate health imbalances. Nutrition-ists recommend at least 3,000 ORAC per day and more if under any of the various stressors most of us face each day. Most individuals get only 1,200 ORAC units or less per day.

Feeling crabby lately? It could be you aren’t getting enough sleep. Work, household responsibilities and childcare can make sleep difficult to come by. Factor in other unexpected challenges such as financial worries, layoffs, relationship issues or an illness, and quality sleep may be even more elusive. Try these suggestions if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

1. Go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on the weekends. Sticking to a schedule helps reinforce your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

2. Don’t eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. Eat a light dinner about two hours before sleeping.

3. Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol in the evening. These are stimulants that can keep you awake.

4. Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can help you fall asleep faster and make your sleep more restful. Don’t exercise within three hours of your bedtime, however. Exercising right before bed may make getting to sleep more difficult.

5. Make your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable. Create a room that’s ideal for sleeping. Adjust the lighting, temperature, humidity and noise level to your preferences. Use blackout curtains, eye covers, earplugs, extra blankets, a fan, a humidifier or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs.

6. Sleep primarily at night. Daytime naps may steal hours

from nighttime slumber. Limit daytime sleep to about a half-hour and make it during mid-afternoon. If you work nights, keep your window coverings closed so that sunlight, which adjusts the body’s internal clock, doesn’t interrupt your sleep.

7. Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow. Features of a good bed are subjective and differ for each person. But make sure you have a bed that’s comfortable. If you share your bed, make sure there’s enough room for two.

8. Start a relaxing bedtime routine. Do the same things each night to tell your body it’s time to wind down. This may include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music.

9. Go to bed when you’re tired and turn out the lights. If you don’t fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes, get up and do something else. Go back to bed when you’re tired. Don’t agonize over falling asleep. The stress will only prevent sleep.

10. Use sleeping pills only as a last resort. Check with your doctor before taking any sleep medications. He or she can make sure the pills won’t interact with your other medications or with an existing medical condition.

If you’re having problems sleeping more than three times a week for a month’s time, see your doctor. You could have a sleep disorder, such as obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome. Identifying and treating the cause of your sleep disturbance can help get you back on the road to a good night’s sleep.

GETTING TO THE HEART OF CARDIO FITNESS

Health and fitness experts agree that aerobic exercise, whether accomplished by treadmill, bicycle or sidewalk, is the workout way to take good care of your heart.

But they say increasing evidence shows weight, or resistance, training and flexibility also have their parts to play.

“As I tell my patients, it really is survival of the fittest,” said Dr. Barry Franklin, director of cardiac rehabilitation and exercise laboratories at Beaumont Hospital and spokesperson for the American Heart Association.

“We have unequivocal data that people who are physically active have 50 percent lower incidence of cardio vascular disease than their sedentary counterparts,” Franklin said. “The higher the fitness, the lower the mortality.”

Franklin said escalating studies suggest complementing that treadmill time with resistance and flexibility training helps maintain muscle tone and burns additional calories.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year about 785,000 Americans have a first heart attack.

The good news is that those who are least fit, the group researchers call the bottom 20 percent, stand to reap the greatest rewards from a fitness regime.

“It’s not the person who’s already doing 30 minutes who is going to do 35, but the person who was doing nothing and starts doing 10 or 15 minutes of regular walking who stands to gain the greatest benefit,” Franklin said.

QueenOfThe Castle ACTRESSTAMALA JONES ON REMAININGCENTERED AND BALANCED

BY MARK ARIEL

Page 15: LA HEALTH NEWS

Tamala Jones, who currently stars on ABC’s hit series, CASTLE, began working in the industry as a teenager

and since then she built an envious film resume including starring roles in hit comedies and roles in dramas, most recently appearing in last year’s Oscar-nominated film, UP IN THE AIR, opposite George Clooney.

On the small screen, the Los Angeles-raised actress continues her envious resume with starring roles on “The Tracy Morgan Show,” “For Your Love” with Holly Robinson Peete amongst many additional gues starring roles on “Everybody Hates Chris,” “ER” and “My Name Is Earl” with real life best friend, Jamie Pressly.

Inspired by her grandmother, who is a foster parent, Jones spends her time off-camera with The Rosmary Children’s services, one of the oldest West Coast charities that helps over 400 foster youth annually who have suffered abuse, neglect and abandonment. Her other interests include writing, horseback riding and recording music.

In an interview with LA HEALTH NEWS Jones says the secret to juggling a busy schedule and remaining centered and balanced is to remember that “my body and health is my number one priority... it’s easy for people to forget that when life starts to get busy. It’s important to get the right amount of sleep and provide your body with the right amount of nutrients and minerals.

Diet-wise, Jones does her best to eat all natural and organic produce. “I try to stay away from heavy starches and stick to breads and carbs with high fiber. I was raised on soul food so I still try and incorporate some of those recipes into my diet just with healthier alternatives. I am, however, extremely partial to a lovely dinner at KATANA in Hollywood.”

Jones stays in shape by “doing a lot of sit ups. I don’t really like going to gym so I have a routine that I am able to do at home. It incorporates yoga, Pilates and traditional stretches. I also love to take Saturday morning hikes, it always clears my mind.”

Regarding her upcoming projects Jones is excited to be continuing on the fourth season of CASTLE. She also recently completed a film, 35 & TICKING, where she play a woman who realizes her marriage isn’t working any longer. The film, starringKevin Hart, Nicole Ari Parkier, Meagan Good, Kym Whitley and Keith Robinson, is currently in post production.

This winter’s heavy snowfalls and other extreme storms could well be related to increased moisture in the air due to global climate change, a panel of scientists said last month.

This extra moisture is likely to bring on extraordinary flooding with the onset of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, as deep snowpack melts and expected heavy rains add to seasonal run-off, the scientists said in a telephone briefing.

As the planet warms up, more water from the oceans is evaporated into the atmosphere, said Todd Sanford, a climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists. At the same time, because the atmosphere is warmer, it can hold onto more of the moisture that it takes in.

Intense storms are often the result when the atmosphere reaches its saturation point, Sanford said.

This year, a series of heavy storms over the U.S.

Midwest to the Northeast have dropped up to 400 percent of average snows in some locations, said Jeff Masters, director of meteorology at Weather Underground.

The amount of water in that snowpack is among the highest on record, Masters said.

“If you were to take all that water and melt it, it would come out to more than 6 inches over large swaths of the area,” Masters said. “If all that water gets unleashed in a hurry, in a sudden warming, and some heavy rains in the area, we could be looking at record flooding along the Upper Mississippi River and the Red River in North Dakota.”

That tallies with projections by the U.S. National Weather Service, which last month said a large stretch of the north central United States is at risk of moderate to major flooding this spring.

EXTREME WINTER WEATHER LINKED TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Page 17: LA HEALTH NEWS

Adapted from Dr. Ronald Alexander’s widely acclaimed book, Wise Mind, Open Mind: Finding Purpose and Meaning in Times of Crisis, Loss, and Change that provides practical and innovative applications to help us through today’s challenging times.

We’ve all been told about the benefi ts of meditation from reducing stress, quieting the mind thus allowing us to sleep more peacefully and improving our health. But did you know that it also decreases our need for sleep

by heightening our concentration, and allowing us to be more productive. Many people think that to receive these benefi ts they have to run off to a monastery or spend hours a day sitting in a lotus position. WRONG! If you feel overwhelmed with work, family and personal responsibilities here is an easy meditation to help you cope with any stressful situation.

Breathing Meditation to Release Unwholesome Emotions

This meditation can help you quickly release any unwholesome emotion or stressful situation and bring yourself back into balance whether you are traveling, at work or at home. The key is to be mindfully aware of your breathing. To do this you breathe in through your nose for a count of three, hold for three, and then out through your mouth for three. The fi rst step is to identify the negative emotion you are feeling so as you focus on your breathing ask yourself, “What am I experiencing?” Once you can answer this question with, “I am feeling anger, impatience, irritability, frustration or even fear” after your next in breath when you hold for three replace that unwholesome statement with a positive one. For example if you are standing in a long line that is moving very slowly and feeling frustrated, focus on your breathing and replace the frustration with, “I am feeling compassion.” Keep repeating the breathing, hold and statement until you can feel all the negative emotions release

from your body and mind. This meditation is a great antidote for road rage when you replace the anger with acceptance; when you get moody with your kids or a co-worker you can substitute your irritability with patience; or if you are annoyed at someone you can replace your impatience with surrender.

In addition to other helpful techniques discussed in my book, Wise Mind, Open Mind I have two new meditation CDs Wise Mind, Open Heart and Mindful Meditations for Creative Transformation that can help you remain calm, focused, and nonreactive when dealing with stress, anxiety and changes in your life. COSMETIC SURGERY SIGN OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY Cosmetic surgeries in the United States last year rose to their highest level since the start of the financial crisis, providing traders with another measure to gauge the economic recovery.

While nose jobs and breast augmentations may never replace U.S. unemployment data or retail sales as economic indicators, investors pay attention.

“Traders will look at all kinds of things. Handbag sales, how things are going at Tiffany’s, where people are going on vacation. This is another anecdote for them that helps confirm things are slowly picking up,” said Dennis Gartman, publisher of The Gartman Letter investment commentary.

Cosmetic surgeries rose 5 percent last year to 13.1 million procedures after falling in 2008 and 2009, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said in its annual report this week.

Breast augmentation and nose reshaping were the most popular, followed by eyelid surgery, liposuction and the tummy tuck .

Some Wall Street traders said the report was a sign that consumer confidence and spending on “big ticket” items was on the way back even though U.S. unemployment remained around 9 percent.

Phil Haeck, a medical doctor and president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said there was pent-up demand for cosmetic procedures now that the economy is improving and credit is easier to acquire.

“The pre-crisis trend of paying for a $6,000 to $7,000 breast augmentation operation on your credit card definitely changed in 2008 and 2009,” Haeck said. “Now many people have paid down their debts and have enough confidence in the economy to pay for operations again.”

Stem cells are revolutionizing the way we practice medicine by its promise of providing novel treatment options today and in the future for cosmetic treatments and for many medical conditions. Amongst the most common stem cell treatments that are available today are stem cell treatments for joint conditions. Different stem cell technologies are being developed and tested around the world for treating joints. Most technologies rely on bone marrow or embryonic stem cells that require cell culture and/or manipulation in a laboratory and therefore require scientific studies to prove their long-term safety before they may be granted FDA approval. Unlike these treatment methods, the Stem Cell Lift(r) procedure harnesses the natural healing power of stem cells found in your own body fat, without the need to grow or manipulate these cells in a laboratory, to treat joints. The Stem Cell Lift(r) Joint Renewal procedure may improve the joint symptoms without the need to undergo major surgery.

Benefits of Stem Cell Lift® Joint Renewal

The most natural and safe method of stem cell use is to allow the genetically programmed stem cells found in your fat to carry out their reparative and regenerative functions in

the body. The stem cells found in the fat are mesenchymal tissue stem cells that are known to have the unique ability to differentiate to fat, muscle, bone, cartilage, and nerve insulating cells. The use of these cells may reduce the pain, discomfort, stiffness and other joint symptoms with a simple joint injection. Most patients report marked improvement of symptoms and have avoided the risks, costs, pain, down-time, and long recovery associated with joint replacements, chronic pain medications, or serial joint injections that may give temporary relief. Although there is no long-term data available for this new treatment options, initial clinical results are very promising.

The Stem Cell Lift® Joint Renewal Procedure

The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia. First, the area that the fat is to be removed from (usually abdomen or thighs) is numbed with anesthetic injection. Then, the fat is removed using specialized mini-liposuction instruments. Next, the stem cells that are present in the fat are separated, concentrated and activated at the bedside. Lastly, the supercharged stem cells are injected into the joint.

Who May Be A Candidate

Most patients with joint pain and stiffness due to injury, arthritis, or wearing away of the cartilage cushioning have shown to benefit from stem cell injections into the joint. May patients that have lost the cartilage in their joints and have been recommended to have a knee replacement may be good candidates for the procedure.

Areas for Treatment

Any joint may be treated using stem cells. The most common joint that has been treated using stem cells is the knee joint. A proper evaluation and assessment must be done on an individual basis to determine if stem cell treatment is an option for you.

Risks and Side-Effects

There is minimal risk with this treatment. The risks are the same as any injection into the joints, including bleeding, infection, bruising, and swelling. Since the stem cells are your own and they are kept in their natural form, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction.

Recovery

There is no down time. You may resume normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. You may experience swelling

and soreness in the area the fat was removed and in the area the stem cells are injected for a few days. There is usually no need for pain medication, in fact most patients report almost immediate relief of symptoms.

Cost

The cost of the Stem Cell Lift(r) Joint Renewal starts at $5500 for one joint.

Couples who struggle to conceive could find baby-making help from antioxidants such as vitamin E and zinc, hints a new review of more than 30 studies.

The researchers focused on men who were subfertile -- less fertile than average but still capable of making a baby -- and found that those who took antioxidants were more than four times as likely to get their partners pregnant than subfertile men who did not take the supplements.

The researchers stopped short of saying that antioxidants actually improve fertility, however. More research is needed to be sure.

Subfertility affects one in 20 men and is responsible for half of delayed conceptions. Up to 80 percent of cases are thought to be due to the effects of oxidative stress on sperm cells, lowering both their numbers and their quality.

Oxidative stress happens when molecules known as

free radicals, byproducts of cell metabolism, damage DNA and cells’ ability to function. Antioxidants, including certain vitamins and nutrients, help to protect cells by stabilizing free radicals.

This has led some experts to wonder if antioxidants might help sperm stay swimmingly healthy.

“Oral supplementation with antioxidants may go some way to improve a couple’s chance of conception,” researchers said.

In addition to oral supplements, antioxidants can be found in a range of foods, from cranberries to collard greens, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

Researchers cautioned, however, that couples should not count on antioxidants to overcome their fertility challenges. Even if certain supplements prove effective, further research is needed to determine which couples could reap the specific benefits.

New dads who feel down are much more likely to spank their kids than dads in good spirits, researchers said last month.

They found 40 percent of depressed men said they had spanked their kids in the last month, compared to only 13 percent of men without symptoms.

“This finding is particularly concerning given that children were only 1 year of age in our study,” Dr. R. Neal Davis, of Intermountain Healthcare in Murray, Utah, and colleagues write in the journal Pediatrics.

At that age, they add, spanking is more likely to cause injuries, and children probably won’t understand why they are being hurt.

The study is based on interviews with more than 1,700 new fathers from 20 large cities in the U.S.

“There has been other research showing that moms who are depressed are more likely to spank their kids, but this is the first time it has been shown for dads,” said Elizabeth Gershoff, an expert in child development and family relationships at

the University of Texas at Austin.

Gershoff, who wasn’t involved in the study, added that it might make sense for mothers to keep an eye on their partner if he is depressed and offer to take care of the kids if things get hectic.

“Parents who are depressed have very short fuses,” she told Reuters Health. “They have much less tolerance when their children misbehave.”

According to a 2009 report from the Institute of Medicine, more than 15 million American kids are living with an adult who suffers from depression.

Earlier studies have hinted -- but not proven -- that spanking may leave a psychological mark on toddlers, prompting aggression and other problems years later.

Many psychologists recommend time-outs and other types of non-physical punishment instead, and both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association discourage spanking.
