In 1971, U.S. President Richard Nixon declared the ‘War on Cancer’ by signing the National Cancer Act to increase research to improve the development of more effective cancer treatments. In the 1970s, the survival rate of cancer patients was 23.7%. In 1975, the incidence rate for all cancers combined in the United States was 400 new cases for every 100,000 people in the population. In 2007, the latest year for which we have updated statistics, the U.S. incidence rate for all cancers combined was 461 new cases diagnosed for every 100,000 people in the population. The incidence of the most serious skin cancer in Great Britain is now five times higher than it was in the 1970s. Breast cancer rates in the under-50s is also at a record high now. With all the research and funding, why are cancer rates still soaring high? Let’s look into human history. A long time ago, I read an account of a physician working in Africa. His report stated that before Caucasians colonized Africa, there were almost no incidences of cancer. Before western colonization, Africans relied on their natural environment for sustenance of life. They ate natural fruits, vegetables, and from time to time, certain meats. When western countries came into the continent of Africa, the incidences of cancer increased drastically. This could be closely related to the canned food, artificial sugar, and food in high sodium and chemical preservatives. During the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971, Herbicide Orange (HO) is one of the herbicides used by the U.S. military as part of its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand. It was to destroy the crops, bushes, and trees that the insurgents hid in. The Vietnam Red Cross reported as many as three million Vietnamese people affected by HO, including at least 150,000 born with birth defects. The contaminated soil continues to affect the citizens of Vietnam, causing a variety of cancers in the lungs, larynx and prostate. Nowadays, pesticides and herbicides are used to destroy agricultural pests universally. A long time ago I met a farmer who said no animal or bug will choose to eat fruits or vegetables sprayed with pesticides or are genetically modified. My question is: who is smarter? The animals or us? Ottawa, Canada takes a step to curb antibiotic use in farm animals after increasing suspicion that antibiotic use on farms is creating superbug infections in humans.

Now, farmers simply have to go to the local farm supply store and buy over-the-counter antibiotics to prevent their farm animals from becoming sick. There is an estimate of up to 80 per cent of the world’s antibiotics that are being used in agriculture.

The World Health Organization warns that the world is headed to a chaotic future where human infections are deadly and untreatable.

In Canada there is no mechanism to moni-tor what drugs are used for farm animals and there is no statistical data on how much antibiotics are currently being used on agriculture.

In most of Europe, the use of antibiotics as agricultural growth promoters has been banned. However, in Canada, the labels of

antibiotics for farm animals has only been under regulation lately to remove ‘production claims’ except those ‘necessary for animal health’.

In the recent decade, there has been a wave of appeals from Canada’s doctors, veterinarians, scientists and even animal drug companies who are losing 20 per cent of the market share as farmers bring in antibiotics from outside the country.

In the midst of these battles, there have been small victories: two months ago, the Chicken Farmers of Canada ruled that its members must stop injecting eggs with the antibiotic Ceftiofur; and some sectors have voluntarily started to limit the use of some drugs for the sake of public health.

Experts Say Treating Heart Disease By Going Natural Works

Heart disease kills 47,627 Canadians each year. While most doctors prescribe drugs such as Lipitor, some clinics, including Health in Motion Rehabilitation based in Toronto, Ontario, are trying to use the power of vegetables to treat this chronic disease.

Natan Gendelman is the director and physical thera-pist of Health in Motion Rehabilitation. He has been on a vegan diet since 14 years. His diet consists mainly of organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. His only exceptions to the orthodox vegan diet are honey and, once in a blue moon, fish.

“The body has the ability to heal and regenerate itself,” said Gendelman, who coaches his patients on healthy lifestyle changes. “This can be done through a completely organic, vegetarian diet, juicing, natural supplements, vitamins, detoxification and cleansing. ”

In the News

To be launched in September 2014, Gendelman is using an all-natural treatment called VitaPlus for patients who would like to experience a difference to their health through nutrition, juicing, massage therapy, supplements and health coaching.

“Most doctors do not realize that the most basic natural resources are the solution to the body’s problems,” said Gendelman.

Dr. William Roberts, a cardiovascular pathologist and editor of the American Journal of Cardiology agrees. “Human beings are far more like herbivores than car-nivores,” he said.

Experts have argued that our teeth structures, the length of our intestines are indications that humans are more likely meant to be herbivores. Instead of sharp teeth of carnivores, ours are flat: ideal for grind-ing fruits and vegetables. Carnivorous animals have short intestines, but ours are very long.

How may of us think that by exercising, we can get away with sitting for long hours each day? The fact is that sitting has been tied to obesity, diabetes, and even cancer.

There have been cases where people die of pulmonary embo-lism after a blood clot formed in the leg: only one example out of many where health experts are studying on about the dangers of sitting.

The latest research links sitting to obesity, diabetes, heart dis-ease and cancer. It also shows that even if we exercise for half an hour each day, it is not enough to take away the ill effects of sitting. In a study at the University of Leicester and Lough-borough University in England, it is shown that sitting is a risk independent of regular exercise – we are still in danger if we are inactive for most of the day.

In another study, Australian researchers focused on TV viewing. They stated, “Every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes.”

As a society we spend more time sitting than perhaps ever before in history, as shown by a doubling of light activity jobs requiring sitting, compared to a reduction in one-third of high activity jobs from the years 1970 to 2000.

In 2005, Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota concluded in his study that those who stayed thin were simply moving around more during the day, but they were not devoting more time to formal exercising.

One way to avoid the health risks of sitting too long would be to make little movements throughout the day. Also, intentionally spend less time per day in a chair, do not stay sedentary for a long period during the day. Give yourself walking breaks even in the office and reorganize your workplace to make yourself move around to finish tasks. The human body is made for moving, not for staying still. Even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told Maclean Magazine, “I feel more creative on my feet.”

Study Shows Going Organic for One Week Can Reduce Pesticides in Our Bodies by 90%

In a study published in the July 2014 edition of the Journal of Environmental Research, it was shown that eating an organic diet for only one week could reduce pesticide levels in the adult body by almost 90%. This echoes 2006’s study that found that organic diets greatly lowered children’s levels or organophosphorus pesticides.

Dr. Liza Oates, the leader of the study, said that participants consumed on average, 93% organic food (83% “certified organic” and 10% “likely organic” food). The results showed that the source of most pesticides comes from food consumption, however Dr. Oates does not rule out other sources such as inhalation and skin absorption.

Research has linked a number of health problems with pesticide levels in the human body, including cancer and issues with the nervous system. “A lot of these agents were initially developed as nerve gases for chemical warfare,” said Dr. Oates.

In a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that children who have high levels of pesticide residues are 93% more likely to have ADHD.

It is recommended that organic apples free of pesticides are one of the best fruits to eat to remove pesticides and other toxins in the body, especially when sliced and allowed to brown because pectin, a detoxifier is produced.
