Lee Sackett, WHC Director, Horseman and Photographer

By Pat McKnight, Correspondent for The Country Today / thecountrytoday.com

While Lee Sackett might not identify himself as a “renaissance man,” his various talents and skills would qualify him as someone who has acquired knowledge and proficiency in a variety of vocations and avocations.

His various accomplishments include horse training, farrier work, cattle ranching, long-haul trucking, logging and photography.

Through his photography business, Handcrafted Imagery, Sackett tends to focus his lens on the nature he finds on his Burnett ranch as well as animals and portraiture.

“I’m mostly self-taught,” said Sackett, “but I do get some information online. My favorite subjects are the outdoors, people and horses.”

Sackett has entered his photography in competitions and received awards, including taking a top prize at the Western Idaho State Fair.

Sackett started his photography career when he was growing up in California borrowing his mother’s camera. His mother soon reclaimed her camera, but encouraged her son’s interest by giving him his own camera. However, she did put a limit on the number of film rolls she would provide her son because of the expense.

Over the years, Sackett has advanced the craft to include the use of special filters and lenses as well as some special effects as creating composites.

He has also noticed changes in the photographic styles and composition customers want. An example of innovations is in where student and wedding photos are taken.

“Today, senior photos are different than when I was in school,” said Sackett. “Then, there was just a photographer taking photos for the yearbook; now, it’s a big production. If seniors want to have their pictures taken, I’ll go to where they want or we have places on our ranch that will work.”

His mother was also instrumental in introducing Sackett to his other passion – horses. He accompanied his mother when she worked at a summer camp near Lake Tahoe. As a fifth-grader, Sackett volunteered to help the wranglers at the horse riding concession, and as an eighth-grader, he was hired on as a member of the horse crew. Continued on next page...

Lee Sackett, WHC Director, Horseman and Photographer

After his first year in high school, Sackett moved to Idaho to learn more about training horses. He did complete high school and then went on to learn other trades. In addition to horse trainer, he added cowboy, logger, truck driver and carpenter to his resume.

He became acquainted with Wisconsin during his long-haul trucking employment, always accompanied by his camera.

“I did trucking between Idaho and Wisconsin,” said Sackett. “I knew people in Wisconsin and decided to move here 25 years ago.”

He met his wife, Diane, and the couple settled on a 154-acre ranch, raising red Angus cattle along with horses. At their base of operation, the two also sell feed supplements, tack and farrier equipment.

“We have good quality stuff that people who use it regularly can depend on,” said Sackett.

Sackett can vouch for the equipment as he has used the farrier equipment himself. However, in recent years, he’s cut back on the number of horses he will trim and shoe.

“In 2002, I did 2,015 farrier visits,” said Sackett, “and that doesn’t include my own horses. When I told clients I wouldn’t be at their place until 10 o’clock at night, they’d say, ‘We’ll have fresh coffee when you get here.’ I’d be working until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.”

A broken leg, received while competing in a show in 2004, gave him a break from farrier work. However, he was back in the saddle a year later competing at the World Foundation Quarter Horse Alliance world show in Missouri. Riding his stallion, SP Poco Millennium, Sackett earned the all-around title in the All Age Senior division.

A gallery of Sacketts’ photography as well as information about horse supplies available at the ranch can be found on his website at https://horseandranchsupply.com. He can be reached via email at [email protected].

Notes of Thanks…

Wisconsin Horse Council,

Thank you so much for the generous sponsorship of the 2019 Wisconsin Horse Council Scholarship. I greatly appreciate your support for furthering my education at U.W. Whitewater the past two years. I am truly honored to receive this award. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Holly Schoenherr

Dear Wisconsin Horse Council, Thank you so very much for your generous donation and sponsorship of Jetta this season! Our horses are the backbone of our organization and your kind contribution allowed Jetta to receive quality feed, exceptional farrier care, comfortable shavings and rewarding massage and chiropractic care. Jetta’s reliable and relaxed personality and beneficial impulsive movement make her an irreplaceable asset to our participants. Your donation made her contribution to our participants a reality. Words cannot express our endless appreciation and gratitude!

Warmly, Rachel Fischer, Sr. Instructor & Equine Professional. REINS, Inc.

Dear Wisconsin Horse Council,

We greatly appreciate your donation to the Equine Club’s Silent Auction that was held during the Seminar for the Serious Horse Owner this past spring. All of the attendees were very impressed with the items at our auction, and we were able to compile quite the spread. We also would like to thank you for taking the time to send items to us. With your generosity, we were able to raise over $350 for our club chapter, which will go towards hands-on events, informative lunch meetings, and scholarships for students to attend the AAEP Conference in Denver for the upcoming year. We would not have so many incredible opportunities to increase our breadth of knowledge if it wasn’t for donors like you. Thank you again!

Sincerely, Taylor Naef, UW SCAAEP VP

Willow Creek Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center’s Annual Ranch Rodeo

On August 3, Willow Creek Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center held its annual Ranch Rodeo (A Bug’s Life theme) with more than 200 people in attendance – up until 2:15 p.m. when a sudden downpour stopped our activities for the day. Most of our riders made it through the rodeo demonstrating their horseback riding skills by steering their horse through the Rainforest Entry, across the Bridge to Bugland, throwing bean bags at the Bug Toss, swatting bugs in Mosquito Alley, weaving their equine partner around giant Ant Hills and gathering picnic food and setting a picnic table. Each participant was awarded with a 2019 Horse Show trophy, then sat for their celebration pictures with their horse, trophy, ribbon and a small gift.

“The Ranch Rodeo is our major fundraiser for the year, and we are so grateful for the gifts from all of our supporters that raised nearly $10,000 for the therapeutic riding program. In addition, we received many generous donations of food and prizes and had the help of 50 amazing volunteers to help make the rodeo such a success,” said Jennifer Pape, WCR Founder and PATH Certified Instructor. Work continues on the new indoor arena and getting it ready for the autumn session of the riding program, with our top priorities of getting electric run to the building for wiring and lighting, and also plumbing and concrete. Please feel free to reach out to Willow Creek Ranch if you have referrals or recommendations for any of these areas.

Located in Mukwonago, Willow Creek Ranch is a 501©3 non-profit organization offering therapeutic riding to children and adults with special needs. By providing support for our thera-peutic riding program, know that you have made a differ-ence in the lives of our special-needs riders who face many physical, emotional and cognitive challenges. If you have questions about our program or would like to visit Willow Creek Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center, please call us at (262) 806-4080 or email [email protected].

Jefferson County Draft Horse Association By Jackie Schuster, JCDHA Secretary

The Jefferson County Fair was held on July 10th-14th. We had Belgians, Percherons and Clydesdales being represented. The youth showmanship class had 15 participants. Last year there were 17 participants. There were a total of 15 families having 56 exhibitors and 65 horses. There were 16 halter classes and 12 hitch classes. The decorating class, which was held after the halter classes on Friday morning, found exhibitors tying tails and braiding manes in 30 minutes and then presenting the horse to the judge. There were three participants in that class.

Thursday night we had fun classes of English and Western riding, egg race, barrels and bribe your horse. There were 13 participants with everyone getting a prize. The bribe your horse was the best. You had to use apples or carrots to get your horse to follow you out to the barrel and around to the finish line without touching the horse.

Our ambassador for 2019 was Tanner Dwinell from Wisconsin Dells/Portage area. She is the daughter of Stacy and Tim Wroblewski. She had to write an essay about why she would make a good ambassador. We also presented the Jerry Hitchcock award to Courtney Davis from McFarland. She showed in showmanship, cart and team and had to receive the most points among the other junior and senior exhibitors.

We would like to thank all the people that helped with the show; Keith Kulow and Matt Reichert draft horse superintendents, Joan and Nicole Smebak, Jackie Hinz and Steve Haase announcing, Lori Reichert for running between barns for exhibitors, Kevin Kulow and Bill Hageman ring people, gate people Kevin Kulow, Austin Morrison, Sam Duffy and Jim Reichert, photographers Janice DeMoe, Robert Mischka and Jackie Hinz. Without these people the show would not have run so smoothly. A special thanks to Keara Duffy for singing the national anthem and Savanna

Drewek for riding Sally carrying the flag. Also thank you to Shipshewanna Harness and Supply for the gift certificates and helping with the number card holders that the Jefferson County Draft Horse Association presented to all of the showmanship exhibitors.

We hope to see everyone again next year!

Life Coach Stacey Bean Invokes Healing Energy of Horses

By Pat McKnight, Correspondent for The Country Today / thecountrytoday.com

Although her clients might think the answers to their questions come “straight from the horse’s mouth,” Gestalt coach Stacey Bean credits her equine partners with helping her clients recognize those aspects of their lives that need healing and balance.

“I believe that my clients have their own answers already inside of them; they are just sometimes outside of their awareness,” said Bean.

Bean offers Holistic Health & Horse Centered coaching at her 20-acre stable in the Sugar River Valley near Verona. She started the Indigo Trails, LLC life coaching program in 2016.

She has recognized her horses have much to offer people seeking wholeness.

“Horses have an essential gift,” said Bean. “I have come to learn horses have more to teach me than I have to teach them. They are so good at being grounded; they’re in the here and now, helping teach us how to be rather than how to do.”

A California native, Bean’s family tree extends back to the Gold Rush era. She started riding at an early age and showed hunter/jumpers in her teens. Later, she worked as a whitewater rafting guide in Colorado, California and Africa.

Bean met her husband, Darren, at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine when the two attended the school. After graduation, their job search eventually led them to UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health where Darren took a job as an emergency physician.

She admitted initially she didn’t know where Wisconsin was, and when Wisconsinites talked about the Packers, she wondered why there would be packers in Wisconsin since the state didn’t have any mountains.

“I was used to the kind of packers who packed horses or mules to carry supplies on trips into mountains,” said Bean.

Settling in Wisconsin, Bean also took a job as an emergency physician at a nearby hospital and had started a family when the rug was pulled out from under her in May 2008.

Bean’s husband was on board a UW Med Flight helicopter transporting a patient to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Shortly after take-off on the flight’s return trip, air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft. The helicopter had gone down, crashing into the side of a bluff east of Onalaska. The flight nurse, Mark Coyne, and pilot, Steve Lipperer, also lost their lives in the crash.

Bean was left to pick up the pieces with the couple’s two children. During the first year of grieving, Bean stayed away from the emergency room, trying to determine the direction for her life. The decision led her to give up practicing emergency medicine.

She began seeking an aspect of medical care she long felt was lacking in the medicine she had practiced. “I felt there was a piece missing,” said Bean. Continued on next page...

Life Coach Stacey Bean Invokes Healing Energy of Horses

During the time of discernment, Bean worked with a shaman and did energy healing. During this journey to recover from the devastation of the loss of her “soul mate,” Bean came across a quote by Joseph Campbell, author of the “Power of Myth,” that became her guiding inspiration, “You have to let go of the life you planned in order to have the life that’s waiting for you.”

Around the same time, a friend in Montana steered Bean toward the “Touched by a Horse” program. Created by Melisa Pearce of Colorado, the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method includes horses as active members of her life coaching program.

Gestalt helps clients examine their lives and seek a life of purpose. The philosophy of Gestalt coaching is to help people identify any unfinished business and work toward experiencing acceptance and appreciation of their selves. The coaching moves individuals beyond pain, fear, anxiety, depression or low self-esteem.

As she was becoming versed in Gestalt, horses came back into Bean’s life in 2012. She credits her horse, Cowboy, with helping her heal.

To help others experience the healing energy of horses, Bean offers clients experiences where she has one of her horses also engaged in the sessions. Two past sessions stand out in Bean’s mind.

The first involved an exercise where Bean was working with a client to help the client accept a personality trait that made her uncomfortable. Bean placed a ground pole in the round pen, designating one side of the pole as the place where the client was comfortable and the other side representing the client’s vulnerable persona.

The client was encouraged to step across the pole and stand on the side where she wasn’t comfortable. The client would step across the pole, but wouldn’t stay long on that side of the pole.

Bean’s horse, Dakota, went up to the pole, straddled it and pulled the pole toward him. The client just stood and watched the horse. When the client stood planted in her “comfort zone,” Dakota went over to her and nudged the client across the pole to the other side.

Bean and her horse helped the client see her vulnerable side was an acceptable, unbroken and beautiful part of herself.

“She completed her session with this new awareness and was able to accept and love another piece of herself,” said Bean.

In the second incident, Bean’s horse Bodhi helped a client prioritize her life. The woman was trying to cope with a life filled with activities that had become overwhelming. The woman was given 12 lead ropes, each representing an activity or aspect of her life – her job, her volunteer work, her family, her marriage, etc.

As Bean discussed each activity with the client, she would stretch the lead rope out and lay it on the ground. When all the demands of the woman’s life were laid out in front of her, Bodhi walked up to the lead indicating the woman’s husband, picked it up and carried it to the woman.

“That action moved the woman to tears as she became aware that her husband and her marriage was more of a priority to her than she was currently making it,” said Bean.

In addition to her medical and behavioral modification training, Bean has a Master’s Degree in exercise physiology and specialty training in nutritional education and women’s hormone health, which allows her to develop a holistic approach to help her clients create fulfilling lives.

THE SCOOP ON MULTI-USE TRAILS - - - - GO SLOW AND SAY HELLO

Multi-use trails have become more and more common and for good reason. Land managers report that shared trails are more cost effective because they require fewer signs and less monitoring. Perhaps even more importantly, multi-use trails can help to build a “trail community” with users cooperating to preserve and protect a common resource. Shared trails offer opportunities to access more miles of trails and provide opportunities to meet and talk with other trail uses, establishing mutual respect and courtesy. At Governor Dodge State Park, the designated horse trails are shared with hikers, with a few trails shared with hikers and bikers.

The Friends of Governor Dodge-Equestrian Committee recognizes that trail etiquette leads to trail safety. On August 17, 2019 the group hosted their 3rd annual “Share the Trails” Open House. Park users were invited to meet the horses and for many visitors, this was the first ever contact with a horse. The mantra for the day was “Go Slow and Say Hello” and through hands-on experiences, a trail safety video, a coloring page, and the excellent brochures provided by the Wisconsin Horse Council, participants learned how all trail users can safely share the trails. Ice cream cones were served to the 250 participants courtesy of the Dodgeville Kiwanis Club. Everyone agreed that it was a fun and educational day!
