While CPAP is the gold standard ofsleep apnea treatment, many peoplecan’t tolerate the masks and pressure. An oral appliance is an FDA-approvedCPAP alternative that fits over your

teeth and holds the lower jaw forward, keeping your airway from collapsing.

A sleep apnea sufferer himself, Dr.Kitzmiller and his wife Lori know first-hand the disruptions that untreatedSleep Apnea can cause.

“We used to think that Tim’s snoringwas normal, but when he would stop

breathing for up to 20 seconds ata time and then wake with agasp, I got scared.

“After being diagnosedwith Sleep Apnea he tried

CPAP but his sleeping habitsmade it too difficult to use. Now thathe’s using an Oral Appliance we bothsleep great!” said Lori Kitzmiller.

Studiesshow that chil-

dren snack an aver-age of three times a day,

but they still aren’t gettingadequate levels of vitamins

and minerals. The challenge forparents is to find a treat kids will

want to eat that’s not filled withempty calories.

Kids’ diets are low in vitamin D,calcium, potassium and dietary fiber,

according to the American DieteticAssociation. And over the past decade,

children’s eating patterns have beenmarkedly low in vitamins A, C and E.

Most moms know that if left to theirown devices, children will almost always gofor sweet indulgences first. In fact, cookiesare the No. 1 snack item eaten by kids today.

So, can moms reward kids after a toughday at school with treats they’ll actually wantto eat while fueling healthy development?

The answer is yes. And it helps to planahead. Here are some helpful tips that canhave a positive impact on kids’ after-schoolsnack choices.

Make nutritious treats accessibleTo help parents with busy after-

school schedules, look for convenientsnacks that can be easily taken from

the cupboard or refrigerator andbrought on-the-go.

Having snacks at their finger-tips helps encourage kids to

make better choices. For example, whenyou come home from

the grocery store,use sandwich

bags toprepack

single servings of things like grapes, cheese, crackers and carrots to make them easy tograb and go in an instant.

For a sweet alternative, make your owntrail mix using their favorite cereal, chocolatechips, mini marshmallows or peanuts.

Pack in nutrientsOne key to success is to modify kids’

favorite foods by pumping up the nutritionalvalue, according to Mike Bloom, vice presi-dent of marketing for Suncore Products.

For example, his company recently intro-duced a new line of cookies, WhoNu?Nutrition Rich Cookies, created to look andtaste like familiar family favorites, whilepacking more than 20 essential vitamins andminerals, plus dietary fiber.

Create tasty optionsTake familiar favorite treats and make

them even tastier for kids. For instance, par-ents can make small changes to belovedtreats using simple recipes like a frozenyogurt sandwich.

Scoop half a cup of your favorite flavor oflow-fat frozen yogurt between two CrispyChocolate Chip WhoNu? Cookies. Freezeuntil firm and serve.

Timing is everythingKnow your children’s schedules. A snack

can help ward off hunger, but

filling kids up with a heavy, calorie-filledtreat can spoil their appetites. Spacesnacks out appropriately, and look fortreats packed with fiber that will keep theirstomachs full without ruining dinner.

Allow more than one chef in the kitchenLet kids’ creativity soar using their plate

as a canvas. Offering a variety of flavorfultreats they’ve helped create fends off bore-dom. Allow kids to play with their food withthis fun recipe:

PB&J ‘Sushi’Trim the crust off a slice of whole wheat

bread and spread peanut butter and jellyover the bread. Roll and cut into one-inchsections with a butter knife. Give yourchild a pair of chopsticks to add someinternational flair.

If your arm goesnumb and your speech isslurred, you know youneed to seek immediatemedical attention.

When you nick your-self shaving, you knowyou can deal with ityourself.

But for the vast num-ber of maladies inbetween, it can be diffi-cult to know when to goto the doctor and whento deal with it on yourown.

One of the most diffi-cult situations in whichyou need to make the“home care vs. profes-sional care” decision maybe when somethingaffects your joints.

The joints do someimportant work for the

human body, and figur-ing out when things willget better on their ownand when you may havea more serious problem isnot easy.

When to seek helpWilliam Ungureit,

clinical director of thephysician assistant train-ing program at SouthUniversity in Tampa, Fla.,says there are someimportant signs that willtell you when to seekprofessional care.

“If the joint is warmto the touch and swollen, seek immediate help,”Ungureit says. “Those aresigns of a possible infec-tion, something thatwon’t get better on itsown.”

Likewise, if you knowthat the joint pain is theresult of an injury such asa fall, put an ice pack onthe injury and seek help

right away.This type of injury

will usually be accompa-nied by swelling and theinability to bear weight.

Otherwise, painfuljoints often can be treatedat home with over-the-counter pain relieverssuch as ibuprofen ornaproxen sodium. Andwhat about ice and heat?

“Cold therapy (ice)can be used for chronicinjuries, such as painafter running,” saysUngureit. “Heat therapyis recommended forinjuries that have noinflammation or swelling.Heat is ideal for sore, stiff, nagging muscle orjoint pain.”

If you decide to treatthe pain at home, youstill need to see your pri-mary care physician if thepain lasts more than twoweeks. Your physicianmay offer prescriptionpain relievers or othertreatment.

Chronic joint painTreatment for chronic

joint pain may be moreinvolved, Ungureit says.

“Non-inflammatoryjoint pain usually signi-fies osteoarthritis, whichis caused by trauma tothe joint or degenerationof the joint tissue inweight-bearing joints.”That means the knee, hipand spinal joints.

According to the U.S.Bone and Joint Initiative,a movement sanctionedby the World HealthOrganization, one in fiveAmericans has someform of arthritis.

And contrary to theperception that arthritisis a disease of the elderly, more than half of thosewith arthritis are underthe age of 65.

There is no cure forosteoarthritis, but it canbe managed with painkillers, physical therapy, steroid injections such ascortisone, or other injec-

tions to help lubricate thejoint.

As a last resort, sur-gery to realign or com-pletely replace a jointmay be an option.Complete joint replace-ment is now available forthe knee, shoulder, hipand ankle.

Motion is lotionAlthough you can’t

prevent osteoarthritis, you can do things to helplessen its onset and itspainful effects.

“Losing weight andexercising regularly aregreat ways to combatosteoarthritis,” saysUngureit.

“When it comes tojoints, we say that‘motion is lotion.’Dropping five or 10pounds may not seemlike much, but fivepounds per step adds upfairly quickly on yourjoints.”

What about herbalsupplements and otheralternative treatments forjoint pain? Ungureit saysthere’s nothing wrongwith trying them, butmake sure you tell yourdoctor which ones youare thinking about tak-ing, since some supple-ments can interfere withother medications.

So while you may notneed to consult your doc-tor for every ache, thereare some serious signs tolook for, and some effec-tive steps that both youand your doctor can taketo help relieve thosepainful joints.

There’s more to hear-ing loss than just losingthe ability to hear clearly.

Hearing loss can drivea wedge between you andthe people you love andthe activities that fill yourlife.

It is common for peo-ple to put their own hear-ing needs at the bottom ofa long priority list.

Good times with fami-ly, staying effective on thejob, and enjoying socialactivities are all ways toimprove your sense ofwell-being.

Hearing loss can get inthe way, and begin tocause subtle changes inhow you interact and howyou feel.

Becky Morris, owner ofBeyond Hearing Aids,

experienced this personal-ly.

“I was very close to mymom, and it becameincreasingly hard to keepconnected before shechose hearing aids,” saidMorris.

“I couldn’t share allthose little things thatmatter, and I really missedtalking with her. WhenMom finally tried hearingaids, the results wereimmediately evident,” shesaid.

“She laughed at jokes, shared in conversations, and we were able torestore our close bond. Imiss her now and am sograteful that she made theeffort to get hearing help,”said Morris.

Kathy Luhn, of Luhn

Hearing Care, hears sto-ries like Becky’s all thetime.

That’s one reason theyteamed up in one locationto help you find hearinghelp, from simple TV lis-tening systems to highquality hearing aids.

How does my dental health changeduring pregnancy?

• Due to an exaggerated hormonalresponse to plaque buildup, pregnantwomen are more likely to develop gin-givitis than women who are not preg-nant, resulting in a condition calledpregnancy gingivitis.

• Pregnant women often have moreacid in their mouths (or gastric acid intheir mouths from “morning sickness”),increasing the risk of tooth decay.

• Increased levels of certain hor-mones can affect the bones that supportthe teeth, causing teeth to loosen.

Compounding pharma-cists are meeting theneeds of peri-menopausaland menopausal womenand andropause in menby use of bio-identicalhormones.

These hormones areappealing to patientsbecause they help tomend a hormonal imbal-ance with hormones thatare identical to those pro-duced in the human body.

Structural differencesexist between human, andsynthetic and animal hor-mones. In order for areplacement hormone tofully replicate the functionof hormones which wereoriginally naturally pro-duced and present in thehuman body, the chemicalstructure must exactlymatch the original.

There are significantdifferences between hor-mones that are natural tohumans and synthetic orhorse preparations. Sidechains can be added to anaturally-occurring hor-mone to create a syntheticdrug that can be patentedby a manufacturer. Apatented drug can beprofitable to mass pro-duce, and therefore a drugcompany can afford tofund research as to themedication’s use andeffectiveness.

However, naturally-occurring substances cannot be patented, so scien-tific studies are lessnumerous on natural hor-mones, because medicalresearch is usually fundedby drug companies.

Natural hormonesinclude estrone (E1), estra-diol (E2), progesterone,testosterone, dehy-droepiandrosterone(DHEA), and preg-

nenolone. Our compound-ing specialists worktogether with patients andprescribers to provide cus-tomized hormone replace-ment therapy that pro-vides the needed hor-mones in the most appro-priate strength anddosage form to meet eachwoman’s specific needs.

Hormones can beplaced in a variety ofdosage forms including:capsules; topical creams;suppositories and sublin-gual troches or drops. Nopainful pellet insertion isneeded.

As the patient workswith their physician andcompounding pharmacist, she can choose the dosageroute and strength that is

most beneficial and pleas-ing to her.

Hormone replacementtherapy should be initiat-ed carefully after awoman’s medical andfamily history has beenreviewed. Every womanis unique and willrespond to therapy in herown way.

Close monitoring andmedication adjustmentsare essential.

Menopause is not a sin-gle point in time when theovaries are switched offfor good, but occurs instages over the span of awoman’s reproductivelife. It’s a transition thatbegins and ends withfemale fertility, and in theprocess, reshapes the way

we think, feel & act.

There are basicallythree stages ofmenopause:

Pre-Menopause –The PMS Years

Women in their 30sshould have fairly regularcycles, but increasingly, younger women do notovulate regularly.

Linked to extremes inexercise and stress, diet-ing, poor nutritional sta-tus, toxins and contracep-tive use, many youngwomen suffer from a myr-iad of symptoms of PMS,or more serious disorderslike endometriosis andinfertility.

Severe symptoms in

these years may be seenas a warning sign of hid-den hormone imbalance, well before the end ofperiods.

Peri-Menopause – TheRollercoaster Years

In the years approach-ing menopause, womenstart to have erratic cyclesas estrogen and proges-terone levels fluctuatebetween highs and lows, dozens of times a day.

This hormonal rollercoaster takes women on awild ride through life. Now is the time when thesearch for symptom reliefbegins in earnest!

How many Catholicslive in the 14 NorthernKentucky counties thatmake up the Diocese ofCovington? Where dothey live?

The Catholic churcheswithin the diocese are try-ing to find out by taking acensus, the first in nearly75 years.

Every organizationneeds facts and figures tohelp it make importantdecisions, for the presentand the future. TheDiocese of Covington, ledby Bishop Roger Foys, isplanning for the future.

Should a new churchbe located closer to wheremore Catholics live? Is anew school needed, orshould a current school

building be remodeled orexpanded? A census willhelp answer those ques-tions, and many others.

Boone County, one ofthe fastest growing in thewhole Commonwealth ofKentucky, was chosen forthe first phase of the cen-sus project.

Last October pairs ofvolunteers representingthe six Catholic churchesin the county walkedthroughout their neigh-borhoods. They greetedtheir neighbors, askedquestions and gatheredbasic information.

If a person indicatedthat he or she attended achurch or congregation ofanother denomination, theinformation was sent on

to the other congregation,as a courtesy. Because theproject was so large, someCatholic churches inBoone County used addi-tional Census Sundays inFebruary or March of thisyear.

Now the Diocese is get-ting ready for the secondphase.

Next month the censusmoves to Campbell andKenton counties. Duringthe week of Oct. 16-23,hundreds of volunteers, wearing a special nametag(see logo in the ad below),from 29 Catholic parisheswill fan out across the twocounties, with a goal toknock on each front door.Additional census days, inFebruary and March in

2012, may also be used. Can they count on

you?The census project is an

all-volunteer effort. Thetwo-person volunteerteam that visits yourhome belongs to yourneighborhood Catholicchurch. They have takensome “basic training” ingreeting you and gather-ing some informationabout your church affilia-tion. Our visitors will notquiz you about your reli-gious beliefs or try to“convert” you and yourfamily to the Catholicchurch – our goal is sim-ply to gather information.

The Diocese has con-tacted leaders of otherreligious denominations

and asked them to informtheir congregations of ourplans. We have also alert-ed law enforcement offi-cials across Campbell andKenton counties that ourvolunteer teams will beout and about beginningSunday afternoon, Oct. 16.

They ask for your help. It’s been a long time sincethey’ve had an up-to-datetally of our membership. They want to do whatthey can to continue tocontribute to the commu-nities they are part of –and have been since theDiocese of Covington wasfounded in 1853.

What do pirates lookfor in attic insulation? Thearrrr value!

OK, while attic insula-tion isn’t exactly funny, itis a vital part of yourhome’s heating and cool-ing.

Did you know thatover half of a home’senergy loss is through theroof and walls? Properinsulation and sealing airleaks can reduce thatenergy loss. Plus, yourfurnace will not have towork as hard – better atticinsulation can lower yourhome energy use by up to40 percent!

Insulation R-valuemeasures how well amaterial stops heat flowThe higher R, the better.

Typically, you shouldinsulate your attic to atleast R-38, or approxi-mately 10-12 inches ofinsulation. The harder thewinter, the more a proper-ly balanced attic will ben-efit your wallet and home.

If you already haveattic insulation, movingup to a higher R-valuecould provide more ener-gy savings. If you decideto have extra attic insula-tion installed by a pro, it’llcost you roughly $1 to$1.25 per square-foot.

There are two easyways to know if you needor can benefit fromadding attic insulation.

First, look inside theattic. You need about 20inches of insulation to

meet the new Departmentof Energy (DOE) standardof R-60. IF you have about15-17” inches of insulationyou have a decent R-49value.

If your home was builtin the past 10 years; youshould have about 12-14inches of insulation whichis equal to an R-38, whichis the minimum approvedstandard that builders aresupposed to insulate to.The less insulation in theattic, the greater the need.

Second, look at yourroof when snow falls. Apoorly insulated attic letsyour homes heat rise upthrough the attic and meltthe snow from the inside-out. The faster your roof isvisible, the greater the need.

Homeowners beware!Simply pumping a bunchmore insulation into theattic can actually causenew problems for yourhome. According to localEnergystar certifiedexpert, Justin Shoemakerat Rooftime, “a real pro-fessional will check yourhome’s ventilation andradiation, to be sure yourhome is breathing.”

The Rooftime staff usesa thermal camera to scanyour home to be sure thatthere is a correct air flowthrough the attic space viaproper roof ventilation, and that there are no airgaps that allow energy toleak away.

Department of Energystudies have shown that a

properly insulated andventilated attic space cansave as much as $1,000every winter in energysavings.

According to Rooftimestaff, the average atticinsulation job costs lessthan $1,500.

As Justin says, “If youare staying in your homefor at least three years; anattic insulation investmentwill put money back intoyour pocket!”

For a free thermal cam-era scan of your atticspace, contact Rooftime at513-753-8463 or 859-341-8463. Visit their site attime2roof.com.

Mr. and Mrs. Joneswalk into their local bigbox store to select newkitchen countertops, armed with paint colorsand a vague idea of howthey want their kitchen tolook when the remodel iscomplete.

They’re giving them-selves the next hour tospend time in the storeand make their counter-top selection. An hour anda half later they walk outof the store, confused, overwhelmed and frus-trated enough to throw inthe towel on the wholekitchen remodeling notionand continue to live withthe stained and deteriorat-ed laminate countertopsthat they have had in their

kitchen for the past 10years.

Unfortunately, theexperience of Mr. andMrs. Jones is not an isolat-ed one. Any home remod-eling project can quicklyget stressful and expen-sive but it doesn’t have to.

The first step is con-necting yourself withexperts in the field andletting them guide you inthe remodeling process.

If Mr. and Mrs. Joneswould have walked intothe door at Excellence ByNature in Florence, Ky.,their experience wouldhave been much differentand much more enjoyable.

Locally owned andoperated, Excellence ByNature employs knowl-

edgeable and courteousstaff with combined expe-rience of more than 50years.

Even more importantthan selecting the ele-ments to go into yourhome is working with anestablished company thatyou can trust.

There are many fly-by-night countertop andremodeling companieswho offer eager home-owners endless promisesyet don’t have an estab-lished location or trust-worthy employees.Although these may notseem like important itemsas you begin the selectionprocess, that could not befarther from the truth.

These companies are

often underinsured orcompletely uninsured, leaving a homeowner vul-nerable for costly repairsafter their remodel is com-plete. If a homeownerwith a problem tries to getin contact with their fly-by-night remodeler afterthe job is complete, theywill often find that theirphone calls will not beanswered or that the com-pany is out of business.

Now the homeownersare left to deal with theexpensive repairs causedby their negligent remod-eler, who has completelyvanished.

Any home remodelingproject is an investmentand homeowners shouldcarefully do their home-

work on any companybefore trusting them tocome into their home anddo any type of work.

Excellence By Natureemploys an extremelytrustworthy and experi-enced staff, who are fullylicensed, insured andcarry an A rating with theBBB. If you are looking fora remodeling companywho will assist you withyour project from start tofinish and long after theproject has been complet-ed, look no further thanExcellence By Nature.
