IEEE PNEC organized the 2nd Karachi Section Student/GOLD/WIE Congress on 4th October 2012. The idea behind this congress was to bring together students from all branches of IEEE Karachi section in order to present their re- search, share their experiences, learn about current developments, interact with other student, gather and discuss innovative ideas and also bring up their problems. The Congress was planned and organized with all of the zeal and zest we could muster in it. The preparation for this mega had been going on for about a month. Publicity was being done on Facebook, ofϐicial page shared & build up so that the word gets out loud enough for all to know that this event is happening. The Congress consisted of different competitions and seminars of which some were carried out simultaneously. On the other hand at the poster design competi-tion, teams from various universities participatedwithgreatenthusiasmheretoo.Asimilarscenariowasobservedintermsoftheregistrationandentryof the teams. A total of eleven teams competed.Eachteamconsistedofthreemembers&waspro-vided with the paints, colors and pastels. Thethemeofdesigningtheposterwas‘Advancingtech-nologyforhumanity’.
Aworkshoptitled‘WebsiteforDummies’wasconductedbyMr.ZainGill,IEEEPNECViceChairandthepersonsolelyresponsiblefortheIEEEPNECwebsite.Theworkshopwasoncreatingandmaintaininga website. It covered a tutorial on how to create a website fromscratch.Thelecturewasaimedatpeoplewithlittleornoknowledgeabout website hosting. It provided them very basic knowledge ofhowcanyoustartoffwithanywebsiteandmakeitrunning.ZainGillemphasizedonwhyitsabsolutelyvitaltohaveawebsiteinthecur-rent day and age and highlighted the outrageously low amount ofparticipationsintheR10websitecompetition.
RabiaKhalidandHassaanIdrees,bothverywell-knownandre-centgraduatesofPNECheldtheaudiences’interestbyhavingalivelydialoguebased session. In the session thesealumnidis-cussedabouttheirPNECdaysandtheroleIEEEplayedinit.Be-ingtheforerunnersandveryactivemembersofthesociety,theywereabletobringaverybrightimageofIEEEinfrontoftheaudi-ence.Theyalsoentertainedquestionsfromtheaudienceandan-sweredthemindetail,withtheaimofclarifyinganymisconcep-tionsregardingIEEEmemberships.Attheendofthissessiontheywereabletoincreaseawarenessandeliminatethemisconcep-tionsregardingIEEEandbeinganactiveparticipantinit.
HassaanIdreesgotthediscussionstartedbypresentinganoverviewofthecurrentscenario.Mr.AliAllawalavoicedhisopinionsandspokeabouthisexperienceintheengineering-entrepreneurshipfield.Hetalkedabouthowclass room learningwas verymuch applicable to real life situations.Mr.MobeenRafiqtalkedabouthowtheengineeringworldwascontributingtopovertyalleviationandgaveexamplesofsomeofhisowninitiatives.AyeshaAkramwasoftheopinionthatalotengineeringstudentswerecomingintothebusinesssideandweremakingquitesuccessfulcareersoutof it.Ms.EramAbbassitalkedabouttheingrowntalentandthepotentialthatPaki-stanpossessesandwhatthistalentcouldachieveifappliedinthecorrectmanner.Shetalkedaboutherresearchonrisingtrendsincareersthatstartedoffwithengineeringandendedupwithentrepreneurship.
Thiswas themosteagerlyawaitedpartofKSSC’12by far. In theAwardsDistributionceremonypartici-pants,belongingfromthevariousStudentBranchesattendingtheCongress,wereseenenthusiasticallyan-ticipating the results of the KSSC’12 Recognition Awards. As expected, on the announcement of everyaward,theaudiencewouldcheerandapplaudfervently.
Honored guest,Mr.ShahabSiddique(Secretary IEEEKarachiSection)wasinvitedontothestagetogiveoutthe awards to the respective winners. The ceremonystartedoffwiththeannouncementoftheresultof theEthicsCompetitionandthePosterDesignCompetition.Team PNEC (comprising of Salar Javaid, Saadi Aziz,HammadSaleemandAsimAhmedwontheEthicscom-petition after being given a run for their money byTeamPAF-KEIT.MeanwhileinthePosterDesignCom-petition,TeamMUETtookawaythe irstprize.
The awards were dominated by IEEE PNEC Studentbranch and not surprising then that it also won theOutstanding IEEE Student Branch Award. The rest oftheawardsweregivenoutasfollows:
