Dunwoody, Georgia (Established July 4th, 1994)

“Opere et Veritate” 1 John 3,18

Brothers all:

With the winter months now upon us, and the doldrums of January behind us, we can look forward to a hectic February. Let us review last month’s calendar first.

In January we held our first of two Knights of Columbus Homeless Shelter events. We pre-pared and delivered hot dishes and sandwiches for the recipient’s dinner and their breakfast the following morning.

I recommend that all Brothers make at least an attempt to participate in one of the very rewarding over-night events. Thank you to those who worked so hard and participated.

Last month also saw a successful Culture of Life event, in which we distributed empty and picked up full baby bottles to support this won-derful cause. Thanks to all involved.

Due to inclement weather the eagerly anticipat-ed Annual Free Throw Championship was postponed until February 21st. Please clear your calendar to help on this date.

January’s Bingo attendance was once again amazing. Apparently the warm family atmos-phere created by the helpful and friendly Knights, as well as the delightful Italian fare are appealing to more and more people month-ly. Keep up the good work.

Last month saw our first NCAA National Championship Football Party (see following article). If you were part of the fortunate group of attendees, you were rewarded with excellent wings, taquitos, chips, salsa, and guacamole, not to mention ice cold draft beer.

Our Financial Secretary and I won the third and fourth quarter pools, and promptly donat-ed our winnings to the Baby Bottle fund. So the winners were aplenty.

Our 1st Degree induction on January 26th gave All Saints one new member, but 5 for the Geor-gia Tech Council , and 1 for Atlanta Council #660. It’s always nice to add 7 new Knights.

During last month’s GK Meeting we began working on the implementation of Pope Fran-cis’s vision to place emphasis on integrating the KofC Councils more deeply into their respec-tive Parishes. This can be accomplished by fur-ther supporting the Parish’s organizations. Please look for more information and details in the months ahead.

February brings us our 2nd Homeless Shelter event on February 2, 2016. We will be busy preparing food and also looking for additional volunteers. Please see Len Dorian to get more information or to volunteer.

Valentine’s Day is hard upon us. I am negotiat-ing with my faithful flower source to once again provide beautiful bouquets of roses at the same low price, which be conveniently delivered to the Knight’s Hall for Saturday morning pick up.

The 2016 Annual Fish Fry kicks off with our “practice run” on February 5, 2016. Ash Wednesday February 10th 2016, will mark the beginning of the season and will conclude on Friday, March 18, 2016. Thank you to all in advance for your hard work and commitment to making this event a success.

Let’s make February a

successful and fulfilling

month. May God bless

you and your families.

On January 26th, McGivney Hall hosted a first degree exemplification that brought 7 new brothers into the Order. All Saints added Brother Mike Cure, while the Georgia Tech Council added the five new brothers shown below. Youth was served that day. Not one of the Techsters had a grey hair. One other young man, not shown, was add-ed into Atlanta Council 660, now being headquartered at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Our hall continues to be an important site for several councils lacking their own 1st degree team. We are happy to aid the KofC in its rapid growth in Georgia.

Second Degree Ceremony at St. Benedict

These five brothers took their 2nd degree on January 20th at St. Benedict Parish in Johns Creek. They were scheduled to take their 3rd degree three days later with even more brothers at St. Monica, Duluth, but bad weather occurred We thank our Chancellor, Dick Marklein, for his efforts in getting so many of our newer brothers to attend advanced degrees. He often ferries them to these other venues. Shown (L-R) are Bob Klingen-smith, Kelly Wheeler, Daniel Kill, Jack Higginbotham, and Mark A. Miller.

Three Brothers in the News

Brother Dennis Shortal was sworn in as Dunwoody Mayor by our Brother Judge Rick McCully who then swore in Brother John Heneghan as Councilman. Also recently, Brother Captain Fidel Espinosa of the Dunwoody Police Force was promoted to Lieutenant. The council and parish has made its mark with the Dunwoody city government. McGivney Hall Meeting Highlights

A packed house at the January 5th council business meeting heard our brothers, new Dunwoody Mayor Denis Shortal and Dunwoody Police Lieutenant Fidel Espinoza, thank the council profusely for its donations of toys to the Dunwoody Police Christmas Toy Drive. The toys were collected at our “Desserts With Santa “ Party.

Monsignor Kiernan Does Christmas

5

His infirmities notwithstanding, our council brother, Sir Knight Donald Kiernan, 91, was not hindered from saying the Children’s Christmas Day Mass at the All Saints gym on Christmas afternoon. He was ably aided by two other council members, Brother Deacon Bill Garrett and Sir Knight Monsignor Hugh Marren during the ceremony. Monsignor Kiernan lives currently at the St. George Village in Roswell. He still frequently attends the All Saints 5 PM Saturday Vigil Mass as he is able. He also attends dinner on Mondays at the Dunwoody Bistro just across from All Saints. He seems to be good for another 100,000 miles after his recent oil change.

Missionary Gray Plunkett News

Sir Knight Gray Plunkett left the U.S. on September 28th to return to his mission work in Benin, West Africa. He arrived early in the morning the next day in Accra, Ghana and headed immediately for Lomé, Togo. He stayed there two days before making the 8-hour trip north to his home in Sèmèrè, Benin. For proof, he sent a picture of him in Atakpamé, Togo, on his way to Sèmèrè. He is glad to be back in Benin and able to work with the Foodo translation team again. They keep busy with drafting various texts while he has been away. They also produced six small booklets with a variety of stories for new readers. Please pray that people who have learned to read will be interested in buying these booklets, so that they can practice their reading skills and become more fluent readers. Gray’s main goal on this trip is to finish going over the children’s Bible that the team has been working on for several years now. He has already verified with them the Old Testament portion of this book. Now he needs to work on the New Testament portion. Please pray that he and the team will do quality work during this time so that they can be ready to publish this children’s Bible soon. News update: the team just finished the final chapter. October is when the new school year starts in Benin. While elementary school (1st-6th grades) is free, the parents still have to pay for school supplies. After 6th grade, there is a yearly fee of around $20 per student, plus more expensive school supplies. For several years now, Gray has been helping numerous people pay their children’s school fees - the members of the Foodo translation team, the men who work in his house, and the families which live in the same compound with Gray. This year that assistance amounted to almost $900 which helped 60 children rang-ing from kindergarten to the last year of high school, (which would be a 13th grade in the U.S. system). Council 11402’s support for this mission work has helped to make this possible. Here’s a picture of most of the children we have helped, saying ‘thank you’ with signs in English, French, and Foodo. Gray extended his stay by three weeks and will be leaving his home in Benin on January 27th 2016. His flight back to Atlanta leaves from Accra, Ghana. However, to get there, Gray will be traveling via Cotonou, Benin, Lomé, Togo and Takoradi, Ghana. As many of you may notice, that last place is where our council brother, Sir Knight Anthony Eshun, lives. Gray plans to stop and visit him. On Friday, January 29, he will travel from Lomé to Accra, passing through the northern part of that city, and continuing another 4 hours beyond it to get to where Fr. Anthony lives. Please pray the traffic will not be too bad in Accra and that he’ll not hit too many Ghanaian “go slows”. He plans to arrive at Fr. Anthony mission that afternoon, spend the two nights there, attend Mass at Fr. Anthony’s parish on Sunday morning, and then leave that afternoon to catch his night flight from Accra to Amsterdam, then to Atlanta. He will be able to bring us greetings from Father Anthony and some pictures when he sees us next. 6

January Parish Bingo—Another Great Month!!

Our Parish Bingo Accountant, Brother Ralph O’Connor, reported that the January 28th Bingo event had another excellent crowd of 122 players including 3 council widows who play free with the council paying their fee. Bingo sales were $1,785 with prizes awarded of $900 yielding net $885 (before payments of 7% sales tax and Bingo supplies). Profit of 50/50 raffle adds about $100 monthly. Food and drink profit is always very close to breakeven.

National Football Championship Party

9

On January 11th, our brothers took advantage of the large TV screen in McGivney Hall to hold an impromptu TV party for the Alabama/Clemson National Championship Football Game. There seemed to be some wagering going on after every quarter. Sir Knight Mario Marin and Sir Knight Dean Trantow shown at left are rumored to have been some of the more fortunate. It was nice to see Deacon Ed Krise hanging out again in the hall that he built when he was our Grand Knight. We are blessed to have such a wonder-ful facility. About 30-35 folks attended and there was great food— wings from the Wing Factory in Dunwoody.

We all know that we are obliged to honor the Sabbath Day once a week. The Jews define the Sabbath as starting at Friday sundown and lasting until Saturday at sundown. The Catholic Church had always defined Sabbath as Sunday. Lately, the Church has redefined it as starting loosely from Saturday evening until Sunday evening. Thus we have the Saturday Vigil Mass. In any scenario, God gets one day a week of reverence. The calendar is an imperfect creation of man and has been manipulated over centuries. When Pope Gregory XIII (the Great) saw the need to bring the calendar into harmony with planetary position, he decreed the Julian Calendar be replaced with his Gregorian calendar. Thus the concept of Feb. 29th Leap Year was born.

This was required because the earth takes almost exactly 365 and 1/4 days to traverse around the sun. When the Gregorian Calendar became mandatory by his decree in October 1582, ten days disappeared from human history and the earth came back into line with the defined seasons. The old Julian calendar had no Leap Year Day. The entire world now defines the days of the week as Gregory had mandated. This illustrates the power of the Vatican even after the Reformation. The Greek Orthodox Church still continues its resistance to the calculation of Easter based on the occurrence of Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, but largely the calendar was reset in stone by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Make sure to keep the Sabbath.

When Exactly is the Sabbath Day?

Brothers Sponsor Homeless Shelter

11

Brothers make 200 sandwiches for 100 homeless men to be given as part of goodie bags the next morning as the homeless return to the streets after the night at the shelter.

Shelter guests eat the warm meal provided by the volunteer women and served by the brothers who then spend the night with the men and then manage the following breakfast before the homeless return to the streets.

Brothers Sponsor Homeless Shelter

12

The men sleep on mattresses after the evening meal. There is a TV viewing room at the rear of the facility where they congregate. Our brothers sleep apart from the men.

On this evening the homeless were treated to two NFL playoff games. Lively discussions took place among the men. They all seem to know more about football than the coaches. Working at a homeless shelter is very rewarding and something you will not soon forget.

Jubilee Year for Mercy We are now in the midst of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. It started on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and will end on the Feast of Christ the King, the end of our current Liturgical Year. What are Jubilee Years? Jubilees are intended to be a time of joy (hence the name) and a special year of remission of sins and universal pardon. Historically its origin goes back to the Old Testament book of Leviticus (25:8-13) where there were special years during which slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts would be forgiven and the mercies of God would be particularly manifest. In Christian times the tradition dates to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII convoked a holy year with the intention that subsequent Jubilees be held every 25 or 50 years or for special occasions. In recent times Jubilees have been held in 1925, 1933 (anniversary of Christ’s death), 1950, 1975, and 2000. Addition-ally, each of these Jubilees had their own themes with the current one emphasizing God’s Mercy. Participants receive a plenary indulgence by completing certain requirements. The requirements in-volved: visiting one of four churches in Rome passing through a special door that was only opened dur-ing the Jubilee Year; going to Confession to be sure they were in the state of grace; receiving Commun-ion; having an interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; and praying for the intentions of the Pope. In other words, a person needed to be making an effort to transform their lives to live in accord with God’s precepts. With our current Jubilee, the requirements remain the same except it is no longer necessary to journey to Rome to receive this indulgence. Pope Francis now allows bishops to designate one or more churches in their diocese to be used during this Jubilee. In our archdiocese seven churches have been designated for people to visit. The churches and the dates for opening the “doors” through which people will pass through to gain the plenary indulgence are as follows:

Cathedral of Christ the King 12/08/2015 Our Lady of the Americas 12/12/2015 Shrine of the Immaculate Conception 01/01/2016 St Philip Benizi 01/25/2016 Monastery of the Holy Spirit 02/02/2016 Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus 02/02/2016 Holy Vietnamese Martyrs 02/22/2016

A word about indulgences. Indulgences are seldom mentioned these days, but they are still an im-portant part of our faith that goes back to the very early days of the Church. This is a rather complex subject, but the basics are that an indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment due for sins already forgiven as far as their guilt is concerned. Sins are forgiven in Confession but the sinner must still pay a punishment.

There are two kinds of Indulgences, namely, partial and plenary. A partial indulgences removes part of the temporal punishment due for sins. A plenary indulgence removes all of it. This punishment may come either in this life, in the form of various sufferings, or in the next life, in purgatory. What we don't get rid of here we suffer there. Only a pope can declare a plenary indulgence. This is what Pope Francis has done for the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

While the above is important let us not forget the primary purpose of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Whether we attend one of the churches to obtain an indulgence or not, we can all make a special effort to become more merciful. We are told in Luke 6:36, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Mercy is an expression of love. As one author said “Mercy is who God is. It is love's second name.” Let us then make efforts to medi-tate on the meaning of mercy and to try to become more merciful through carrying out the spiritual and temporal works of mercy which in essence is how we love God, our neighbors and ourselves.

God and Father of us all, in

Jesus, your Son and our

Savior, you have made us

your sons and daughters in

the family of the Church.

May your grace and love

help our families in every

part of the world be united

to one another in fidelity of

the Gospel.

May the example of the

Holy Family, with the aid of

your Holy Spirit, guide all

families, especially those

most troubled, to be homes

of communion and prayer

and to always seek your

truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen
