Grand Knight Report

Knights KnewsKnights KnewsKnights KnewsKnights Knews May . 2018

Greetings Brothers of Council 5803,

Last year our first elected Grand Knight Russ Ireland and his dear wife Gail

lost their eldest son Michael while he was in surgery. With love and sin-

cere admiration for Russ and Gail, our Brother Paul Friederborn set forth to

build a rock garden on the Ireland’s property to commemorate Michael’s

life. Assisted by our Brother Knights, Paul organized multiple work groups,

cleared brush, poured cement and placed rock over a five week period of

time. He also generated numerous conceptual designs for Russ and Gail

to choose from. To our Brother Paul and the rest of the Knights who took

part, thank you so very much for this amazing display of God’s compas-

sion. You are all most worthy!

As you know membership has struggled this year due to the vacancy of the chairman’s position. The

good news is that on April Sunday 15 the Council had their first membership drive for 2018. The

push to bring new members into the fold was a complete success. Brothers covered all services in-

cluding the 5:00 Mass which yielded a total of six new signups, including a transfer. There were also

several solid lead to round off a perfect day of fellowship and goodwill. I would like to give a very

special thanks to our new membership chairman, SK Christopher Smith, SK Willie Romero FICF and

the rest of our brothers who participated. Job well done!

This year’s International Dinner was once again held in the parish to the delight of all those who at-

tended. The food was amazing as always, however this year was special. Not only was attendance

up, but the atmosphere was full of laughter and fellowship. Thanks to our cooks for their culinary

proficiency, our bar tender and those how helped decorate. Very special thanks to our organizers,

Brother Cliff Wirtz and his wife Paula.

Last week, members of the Council and their wives came together in Jesus name to pray the Holy

Rosary for our Brother Herman Conant. This in itself is an answered prayer!

“When two or more are gathered in my name…” What more need be said.

less of where I am?

Christmas at Christmas time, etc.)?

3. Do I show joy to others? Can people see Christ at work in me?

4. Do I look for Christ in others?

5. Do I frequent the sacrament of reconciliation?

6. Do I attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation?

7. Do I attend daily Mass as often as possible?

8. Do I pray for those who need my prayers and when asked to do so?

9. Do I set aside a time/place each day in prayer?

10. Do I visit the sick?

11. Do I serve others with love and compassion?

12. Am I willing to be unpopular for taking stands in defense of Christ’s teaching?

13. Do I have the courage to admonish the sinner?

14. Do I refrain from gossip?

15. Is my speech reverent and clean before God and others?

16. Do I show humility over my achievements?

17. Do I give glory and thanks to God when things go well for me?

18. Do I set a good example for others?

19. Do I talk about the beauty of my Catholic faith to others?

20. Do I truly place God first in all things, or is He merely contending for a piece of my time

each day?

Rendering Pecuniary Aid The month of November in the Knights of Columbus is

traditionally the time during which we remember our de-

ceased Brother Knights- those that have gone to their

eternal rest.

Our thoughts also turn, naturally, to those who our Broth-

er Knights left behind their widows and children. These

are the same people, though of a different generation,

who occupied Father McGivney’s thoughts in 1882 when

he founded the order.

The first two reasons listed on our charter for the establishment of the Knights of Co-

lumbus are “rendering pecuniary aid to its members, families and beneficiaries of

members” and “rendering mutual aid and assistance to its sick, disabled and needy

members and their families.

My position as a field agent for the order has evolved from these principles. I am

here to help you plan financial security- both for yourself and those you may leave

behind. I am not here to sell you insurance because you might die and be a part of

our remembrances next November. I am here to sell you insurance because some-

one else might live… and I think you love that someone and would like her to contin-

ue to live with dignity.

It’s not a pretty thought, but picture the first

November, your loved ones will spend

without you. How does it look?

Call me today for an appointment. I want

to hear from you.

Herman Conant It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Herman Conant today a 4:00PM.His family was with him, holding him as he passed into an eternity with God.

The Conant Family wanted to express gratitude to all of their Knights family this past month. Your prayers, phone calls, visits and meals mean more than you will ever know. Please continue to pray for the family during the difficult days ahead.

Shortly before his own Passion, our Lord Jesus wept tears with Mary and Martha upon the death of Laza-rus. In the midst of this sorrow, he told Martha: "I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life" (Jn 11 :25-26).

Jesus raised Lazarus from the tomb to teach us that death is not the end for those who believe, but ra-ther a glorious beginning. Upon leaving this world, the faithfully departed begin their journey toward a heavenly dwelling place, prepared for them by Christ who rose from the dead (cf., Jn14:2-3).

The passing away of our earthly life, therefore, is a transition to a new life, in which “every tear is wiped from our faces” (cf., Is 25:8) and sickness, pain and suffering are no more.

Every Knight of Columbus is entrusted to the care of Mary, the Mother of God. We carry the Rosary as the sign of our dedication to her and to her Son. Confident in her motherly love for us all, we en-trust the soul of our Brother Herman to her, so that she may present him to her Son.

Amen

International Dinner Re-Cap

Page 7

Our annual International Dinner was held last month in conjunction with Vocation Sunday.

Our parish priests as well as our seminarian Steven Rodriquez spoke on vocations to the

priesthood or religious life at all the masses. We also handed out prayers for vocations at all

the masses that were prayed at the end of each mass. Later in the day we held our annual

International Dinner to raise funds to assist our seminarians and religious. We had a very

good turnout this year and raised $3,700 from ticket sales and monetary donations. Many

thanks to all the brother Knights, wives and parishioners who came out and supports this

very worthwhile event.

Brother Bob Hacia did his usual great job as our “keep of the cash”. Brother Mario Robles

was once again on hand as our master “mixologist”! PGK Rick Ostrich helped with set up

and kitchen confusion. Brothers Ed Weigand and John Mackenzie stayed late and cleaned

the kitchen and all the chafing dishes! Our cooks and brothers and/or wives who made mon-

etary donations were: Neil & Lupita Fanning, Clark Pentico, Tony Loniero, Greg Secor, Joel

& Annalies Bruemmer, Carmen Torres, Cathy Sullivan, Esther Wainie, George & Jan

Gnesda, Jim & Dalarie Manda, Joe & Lorraine Farrall, Joh Mackenzie, Sam & Juliet Doka,

Lee and Mary Olson, Tony, Lu and Ligia Gammariello, Tony, Goerge, Victor and John

Lemos, Tony Bonome, Tony Demarco, Jimmy & Linda Fabry, Chris Fabry and Ed & Martha

Weigand and Paula and Madeline Wirtz and John & Linda Downey.

Once again we give very special thanks to Carmen Gonzalez who worked very hard reach-

ing out and coordinating with parishioners who donated food as well. In all we had over 45

cooks this year! Carmen also coordinated with the Sera Club, San Buena Ventura Chapter

who brought food and 10 volunteers to help serve. This year we had a new group join us.

The Italian Catholic Federation “ICF” came out in numbers. They also brought food and 10 of

their members to work the event. They were great fun!

We also that the St. Rose Hispanic and Filipino communities for once again coming out in

numbers donating their delicious food!

I know that we forgot some of you but know that you have our most sincere thanks. Please

continue to pray that we will have more men and women become priests, brothers, deacons

and sisters.

May God Bless abundantly bless each of you!

Fr. Shea 40th

Anniversary Mass

On Sunday, May 27th we join our brother

Knight and Council Chaplain, Fr. Shea in cel-

ebrating the 40th Anniversary of his ordination

to the priesthood. Father has faithfully served

in Christ’s Holy Priesthood for 40 years and

still going strong! How many people do we

know, who, at the 40 year mark are ready to

stop and retire? How many people feel, after

40 years in one position that their most pro-

ductive years are behind them? Not our Fr.

Joe. His vision for St. Rose is always looking

to our future. He does not dwell on what he

has accomplished, but what he can yet ac-

complish for the Holy Church, St. Rose of Li-

ma parish and school and city of Simi Valley.

After the 9:00 mass all are invited on church patio for refreshments and

to visit with Fr. Shea. He will then celebrate a special Anniversary Mass

at 11:00AM with a 4th Degree Call-Out. After mass, the parish will be

having a free lunch in the parish hall in Fr. Joe’s honor. Because of the

size constraints of the hall we will be distributing 250 tickets to this spe-

cial luncheon on a first come, first served basis. Please contact PGK Cliff

& Paula Wirtz at 208-8970 or by email at [email protected] if you would

like tickets. Sadly if you do not have tickets we cannot accommodate you

at the luncheon. Please email or call today if you want to come.

We also need volunteers for set up, serving and cleanup. Please call or email Cliff if you would like to lend a hand.

Guarding the Tomb of the Unknow Soldier

• How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why? 21 steps. It alludes to the 21 gun salute which is the highest honor given any military or foreign digni-tary.

• How long does he hesitate after each of his two 90 degree turns to begin his return walk and why? 21 seconds for each 90 degree turn for the same reason as the first answer.

• Why are his gloves wet? His gloves are moistened to prevent losing his grip on the rifle.

• Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and, if not, why not? He carries the ri-fle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes a crisp 90 degree turn and faces the three unknown soldiers tombs, then executes another 90 degree turn and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder again to protect the tombs from any threats.

• How often are the guards changed? Guards are changed at 30 minute intervals or longer de-pending on time of day, time of year or weather. But continuously 24 hours a day, 365 days a yr.

• What are the physical traits of the guard limited to? For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall

• The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to help him walk more smoothly so he does not appear to be marching and to help him execute smooth turns. There are metal toe and heel plates to also help him make smooth turns.

• There are no wrinkles folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full length mirror.

• The first six months off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arling-ton National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred.

• Among the notables are President Taft, President John F. Kennedy, ( the only 2 presidents in-terred there), Joe Lewis (the boxer), Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most decorat-ed soldier of WW11 and of Hollywood fame.

• Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.

• The Tomb has been patrolled continuously 24/7 since 1930.

God Bless and keep them. Eternal Rest Grant Them O Lord And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them, Amen. ((We should be very proud of our men and women in the service no matter where or when they served or what branch of service they were in. That is True Patriotism.)) Dominick Costanzo, PFN, PGK

Eucharistic Adoration Brother Knights,

We are fortunate to have 24-hr Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration available to us

at St Rose. Many spiritual giants of our faith have been devoted Eucharistic

• St Francis of Assisi

• St Thomas Aquinas

• St Mother Teresa

• St Elizabeth Ann Seton

• Blessed John Cardinal Newman

• Bishop Fulton Sheen

• G.K. Chesterton

• St Edith Stein

• Dorothy Day

• St John Paul II

If you aren’t a scheduled adorer, consider doing so by calling one of the team leaders:

12 AM-5 AM: Teresa Wong, 428-0942

6 AM-11AM: Cathy Sullivan, 526-7628

12 PM-5 PM: Anita Kohler, 526-9910

I have been using this quiet time (Wednesday, 4-5 AM) for several years and

have found it to be a great opportunity to meditate, pray, and discern God’s

will, especially in times of need. I am usually the only person at that time: it’s

me and Jesus, no distractions! Lately, I’ve been warding-off falling asleep by

walking around the church while saying the rosary. Sometimes, I play a song

from my i-phone that captures a spiritual moment.

As you know, we have many brother Knights and family members on our pray-

er list…and the list keeps growing. A wonderful expression of your love for

them would be to spend an hour of adoration in prayer, then sending a card,

titled EUCHARISTIC ADORATION – A GIFT OF LOVE

(available in the chapel, see below) stating the date and time you spent in
