The difference between rigid PVC—such as plastic pipe—and flexible PVC—such as boat curtains—isa chemical called plasticizer. The more plasticizer that is mixed in during manufacturing, the moreflexible the vinyl is.

Over time, however, this plasticizer migrates to the surface and, from there, gets washed or wipedaway; and this process is accelerated by the sun. Little by little, flexible PVC becomes rigid PVC. Theside effects of this change include yellowing, clouding and becoming brittle. Eventually, you can nolonger see clearly through the curtain.

LEATHERNothing takes the place of real leather

Genuine upholstery leather is Nature’s product. Thismeans that such natural characteristics as barbed wirescratches, veins and horn marks may be healed over andbe apparent to the eye, but this does not mean inferiorquality or lack of durability. Such marks of Nature areyour guarantee of top grain leather. The finest grades ofupholstery leather are oft times hand grained or left inthe natural grain. In either case there will be variationfrom one part of the hide to another. Such natural grainvariation must be expected, as it differentiates genuineleather from the imitations where a printed pattern maybe noticeable as it is repeated.

When buying quality furniture covered with genuineleather, especially in mottled two-tone color, rememberthat no small swatches can show all of the variousshadings and color in a whole hide and we would behappy to submit larger samples for approval.

These genuine leathers are all custom finished by handto meet the highest standards in the industry. Carefulattention to subtle blending and mottling cannot beobtained by automatic equipment used in producingimitation materials.

Special Colors Made to OrderOur card shows a wide range of colors. However, in theevent that there is no satisfactory color to meet yourspecial requirements, we are in a position to createspecial colors to match your fabric, carpet, or wallpaper.It is important in such cases that you specify whether ornot you require a solid or a mottled two-tone color, andshiny or dull finish.

Color VariationsIt is important to bear in mind that all of the leathersshown on this card are hand finished. Many of the colorsshown are mottled two-tone leathers and in a smallsample it is not possible to portray the color variationsand shadings which occur in hand padding or glazing ofsuch leathers.

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONSFOR GENUINE LEATHER

A hide of genuine leather is nature’s product and cautionmust be exercised in cutting one. The above diagramshows various areas of a hide and they are cut as follows:

Section A should be used in cutting seat tops, insidebacks, cushion bands and other sections that will receivethe most strain and flexing. Section A is the primeportion of a hide.

Section B should be used for outside arms, backs, hiddenbands or any other parts of furniture that receive little orno flexing. The flank sections must be used on outsidebacks and non-wearing surfaces in order to avoid trouble.Flank fibers run generally in one direction as indicatedby the arrow. In applying flank sections to a chair, thefirst pull should be taken in the direction of the arrow. Astretch at right angles to the direction of the arrow maycause the finish to crack.

How to Calculate Leather from FabricYardage RequirementsFor every yard of 36″ fabric,

order 12 square feet of leather.

For every yard of 50″ fabric,order 17 square feet of leather.

For every yard of 54″ fabric,order 18 square feet of leather.

Scotland is the home of the world’s best upholstery hides. Angus and Arran Scottish leathers from Keyston are chosenfrom only the top 5% of the available hides. With practiced eyes and care passed down through generations, Scottishcraftsmen inspect each hide. Slowly the pile of rejected hides grows and worn hands pass on only the hides of Angusand Arran quality. These quality hides are inspected a minimum of 16 times to assure that only the best remain.

In addition to thorough inspection, rigorous laboratory testing confirms that each hide will meet the toughstandards of durability, coloration, and rigorous flammability specifications. Angus and Arran leathers feature largehides of regular thickness with little or no scarring in the lustrous finish. You’ll find that each Angus and Arran hide willage through the years, with a grace of fine scotch whiskey.

Like fine scotch, it’s the soft, pure water from the Scottish highlands which gives Angus and Arran their unique feeland lustrous appearance. And, though soft and flexible, Angus and Arran have the strength for stitching, pleating,buttoning, and compound contours.

REGULAR SEWING MACHINE NEEDLES

Troubleshooting Guide This section contains abbreviated trouble-shooting information which can be of help indetermining and removing the causes of troublethat may develop in the machine. When thetroubles covered by this section develop, theycan be conveniently tracked down and readilycorrected by consulting the following listing:

a. Needle Breakage.1) Needle is loose in clamp. Tighten

clamp screw.2) Needle of incorrect class and

variety is being used; compareneedle with one of correct type.

3) Presser foot is loose or out of line.Straighten and tighten it.

4) Needle is too light for the fabric.Select the correct needle.

5) Operator is pulling on fabric. DONOT assist machine in feedingmaterial.

b. Needle-Thread Breakage.1) Thread is too heavy for the needle.

Insert thicker needle.2) Right-twist thread is being used.

ONLY LEFT twist thread must beemployed.

3) Damp or defective thread is beingused. Use dry, smooth thread.

4) Machine is incorrectly threaded;follow threading diagram forspecific machine involved.

5) Needle is incorrectly set. Set theneedle with the short grooveclosest to loop taker.

6) Upper tension is too tight; adjustfor correct stitch balance.

7) Thread take-up spring is out ofadjustment.

8) There is a sharp edge on therotating loop taker, bobbin caseor tension controller; smooth withfinest emery cloth (320 grit) oroilstone and polish with rougecloth.

9) Needle is rubbing against presserfoot. Adjust and tighten the foot.

10)Needle is defective, blunted orbent at the point. Use a good,new needle.

11)Needle hole in feed dog is sharp-edged or burred. Smooth offend-ing areas.

c. Bobbin-Thread Breakage.1) Defective or damp thread is

being used. Use dry thread ofcorrect size.

2) Bobbin case tension is too tight.Adjust to obtain well-balancedstitches as described under“Thread Tensions.”

3) Bobbin case is incorrectlythreaded.

4) Bobbin is wound too full torevolve freely. Take off thread tobelow the rim of the bobbin andadjust the bobbin winder toavoid winding bobbin with anexcess of thread.

5) Rounds of thread on the bobbinare lapped over one another;unwind bobbin manually andrewind evenly and uniformly.

6) Bobbin case is sticky with gummyoil and/or lint. Clean the bobbincase and rotating loop taker with

kerosene or naphtha andlubricate rotating loop taker witha few drops of oil.

7) There is a sharp edge on therotating loop taker, bobbin case,bobbin or needle. Smooth sameas in the foregoing chapter.

8) Bobbin sides may be bent, nickedor distorted and bobbin will notturn freely. Such bobbins shouldbe discarded and replaced.

d. Skipping Stitches. If the needle threadfails to catch the bobbin thread, themachine will not sew or will leaveskips in the stitches. To remedy thistrouble, time the needle with theneedle bar according to instructions.

e. Drawing of Seam. If the threads drawor pucker the seam, adjust tension.

f. Stitches Uneven or Stitches Piled Up.If the stitches pile up in one place,adjust the stitch length regulator forlonger stitch. Also, if indicated, thepresser foot pressure on the materialshould be increased. Check rise ofteeth of feed dog above surface ofneedle plate. They should rise to theextent of their full depth.

g. Feed Dog Striking Throat Plate. If thefeed dog strikes the throat plate,adjust the feed dog to rise above thethroat plate no further than thedepth of the feed dog teeth. Alsocheck travel of feed dog within slotsin throat plate. Also observe if, withmachine set for longest stitch, thefeed dog strikes either the front orthe rear of the feed dog slots in thethroat plate. The simplest remedy forthis problem is a slight reduction institch length to avoid such striking.

There is also the possibility of anaccumulation of lint and debris fromsewing between the feed dog and theunderside of the throat plate.Remove throat plate from machinebed by loosening its screws and brushout from feed dog any foreign matterwhich may have become packed intoits slots and between its teeth. Also,wipe clean underside of throat plate.Replace throat plate on machine bed,tightening its screws.

No-Sag is a spring made of special high carbon, hightensile steel formed and tempered into serpentinestrands of circular shape.
