It was a darkand stormy nightand I was walkingbarefooted acrossthe front roomrug, when I feltsomething brushacross my foot. Ilooked down and there was adreaded mouse. He scurried acrossthe room and under a coffee table. Now I know that mice don’t drinkcoffee so he wouldn’t be there long.I peered under the coffee table withmy flashlight and he zoomed underthe TV. Now I’m sure he doesn’twatch TV and then I saw him headfor the pantry. I was in hot pursuit.

I grabbed a fly swatter and waswhacking at him all across theroom. He went under the pantrydoor. I opened it and he wasnowhere in sight. But I knew thatthe war was on. It was me versusthe one ounce furry rodent.

I went out to my workshop andgrabbed my box of mouseweapons. I had them all: the Victorspring traps, Di-con, rodent mazebox and my fly swatter. I knewbased on the route this tiny mouseused meant that I would need trapsin several places so here’s what Idid.

First I gave them warning, “Iknow you’re out there and if youstick around you’re going to getsmushed.”

I did this for humanitarian rea-sons, plus I always feel bad when Isee what a spring trap does to a

Things I have noticed...

Of mouse and me one ounce mouse.

I’ve noticed that a spring trap setwith peanut butter seems to be thebest method for capturing those lit-tle vandals. I say vandal because oninspection of items in the pantry,my wife found several plastic bagswith little knawed holes.

“Ewwww,” she said, andpromptly threw away all of thedamaged goods.

Now she was really mad. Sheturned to me and said, “The glovesare off. Go get them you bravestrong man!"

Buoyed by her faith in me, mychest swelled, my muscles expand-ed and I was ready to do battle.

I placed five Victor traps in fiveplaces. I put peanut butter on eachand then I sat back waiting for thecarnage. Nothing happened untiltwo in the morning when I heard atrap go off in my bathroom. Whatwas that mouse doing in my bath-room? Taking a shower? Drinkingout of the toilet? Or eating mytoothpaste? Whatever he was doinghe was a goner. That was numberone. The next morning anothermouse had bit the dust under thesink.

Vicki says she does not allowdust under the sink but the mousewas dead anyway. Three days havepassed and no sightings or smoosh-ing has occurred. I’m still vigilant, Ihave plenty of peanut butter and Ithink I'm winning the battle.

Mice, you messed with thewrong guy!

Message of faith

Dan Schlensker,Courier Columnist

Recently I wasreminded that I ama sinner! I was head-ed home to WoffordHeights, and atabout the dam Icame up behind anSUV travelling sig-nificantly (10 per-cent) slower than the speed limit. Ifollowed--perhaps more closely that Ishould--at a distance that is supposedto indicate to the slower driver that Iwould like for them to use a turnoutand let me get past. (At least I havecome to believe in the two years inthe KRV, that that is how it’s sup-posed to work.)

My speed while driving has owedmuch over my nearly 50 years of driv-ing to the coaching of my high schooldriver-training instructor, who triedto teach us not do dwadle on theroad. He said, “Since traffic accidentshappen in time, the less time youspend on the road, the less likely youare to have an accident.”

As a math-science student, in mymind, that translated to the faster yougo, the less time you spend on theroad, and the less likely you are to beinvolved in an accident. All within theboundaries of safety, of course! So myhabit has been to travel at safe speedswithin (and this from a state trooperor two) 10 percent of the limit.

So, after the slower driver passedby two opportunities to pull over andlet me by, I opted to pass when wegot to the straight uphill stretch just

The solution to imperfectionsbeyond the curve from HungryGulch. As soon as I saw the wholestraight uphill stretch was clear, I didnot wait until the double yellow linebecame dashed, I passed the slowervehicle and proceeded up the hill, being relieved to get around themore contemplative driver.

When I got over the hill and intoWofford Heights, I stopped to get mymail from our box at the Post Office. When I came back out the SUV I’dpassed was motoring through theparking lot. As I was getting into mytruck the driver stopped and said,“Excuse me, do you know that youcrossed a double yellow line when youpassed me?”

I admitted that I did know that. Ireasserted the safety of my maneuverand noted that she’d had a couple ofopportunities to pull over. She stillinsisted that I broke the law.

She was right! I did break the law.My last words to her were “Thankyou.” I need a reminder on a regularbasis that I am not a faultless person. In fact, the Bible says that “there isnot a righteous man on earth whocontinually does good and who neversins"”Ecclesiastes 7:20). My need forforgiveness and a Savior were, onceagain, brought into bold relief. Thislady was a God-send: what a gift inearly Advent as we prepare to wel-come into our world and hearts, theSavior of the world, Who brought usforgiveness of sins, Who was born ofthe virgin Mary, and laid in a mangerin Bethlehem. O come, let us adoreHim!

Forest dumpsters not for household dumpingThe Sequoia National Forest spends thousands of dollars annually to dispose of

trash left in Forest Service campgrounds. This taxpayer money is purposed to keepcampgrounds and recreation sites clean, not meant to subsidize trash-dumping ofhouseholds that choose not to dispose of their trash properly nor for contractors thattry to save money by not disposing of post-job refuse in the proper manner. ForestService Law Enforcement has already issued tickets to several individuals who havebeen caught repeatedly transporting and depositing their household trash into ForestService dumpsters. Dumping of any refuse, debris, trash or litter brought as suchfrom private property is a violation of Federal regulations. Law enforcement will con-tinue to enforce this policy, and violators will be fined $325 each time caught. TheKern County Waste Management’s Kern Valley Transfer Station is located six milessoutheast of Kernville on Sierra Way. Hours of operation are Thursday throughTuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the station allows household trash to be droppedoff at no charge.

Juliette Binoche and NikolajCoster-Waldau in “1,000 TimesGood Night”

© 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sam StruckhoffCourier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK“1,000 Times Good Night” (R)

-- As a photojournalist working insome of the world’s deadliestplaces, Rebecca (Juliette Binoche)faces untold danger so she canmake a difference by photograph-ing the reality of war. Her husband(Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and twodaughters wait for her at home inIreland, suffering each time sheleaves. When Rebecca gets tooclose to a suicide bomber, her hus-band tells her that she must stopputting her life in danger, or she’lllose her family.

The film hits hard with scenesof Rebecca navigating and snap-ping away as conflict, carnage andinhumanity surround her, then fol-lows up with emotional gut-punches when she realizes whatshe puts her family through.

“Pride” (R) -- When you thinkof groups who have formed iron-clad alliances, you really don’tthink of coal miners and gayactivists as brothers in arms. However, in England in 1984, coalminers had to fight to keep theirindustry alive and their home-towns from folding under pressurefrom the Thatcher administration.A group of gay and lesbianactivists sympathize with theplight of the miners, and earnestlyoffer their help to the perplexedworkers.

It’s a high-spirited Brit comedy

with good intentions and the righttone. The characters are cut sym-pathetically, the jokes are charm-ing, and emotional weight isearnest without being cloying.Sexual activities and questions arereferenced, but it never getsraunchy. It’s a crowd pleaser witha good outlook.

“The Trip to Italy” (R) -- Thissequel to the 2010 British hit “TheTrip” puts comedians SteveCoogan and Rob Brydon back onthe road to semi-improvised hilari-ty. The two comedians play slight-ly fictionalized versions of them-selves. They”re friends, sort of.Well, they”re adult men who areable to stand one anothe’s compa-ny, keep a conversation going andcompete over who can do the bestvocal impressions. It beats loneli-ness. This time, they’re on a news-paper assignment to travel aroundItaly, eating fine foods and writingabout it. It’s a serving of dry, ridiculous humor with well-por-tioned bits of reality.

Clouds on the title Talking About Real Estate

Matt FreemanCourierColumnist

Today I want totalk about some-thing that is rela-tively common forboth buyers andsellers to gothrough in a realestate transaction, and that is one or more clouds onthe title. A cloud on the title is anindustry term that we real estateagents use tomake ussound allsmart andknowledge-able. Did itwork? Yeah, right.

Basically, a “cloud on the title”is one or more problems that anescrow is having with the titlereport on a property that makesthat property unable to receivetitle insurance and thus closeescrow. They can be very frustrat-ing.

So how is this avoided? Well, basically if property that is sellinghas changed hands and when thatchange took place either betweenfamily or if the property was actu-ally sold if there was not anescrow then there can be prob-lems with the title. A paid-off deedthat was not recorded as such, arelative claiming to own the landthat does not, on and on. Mostlythey deal with either death or

debt, for example a wife whosehusband dies but she is not onthe title of the property or theproperty is in a trust that she isnot part of. In that case most like-ly there would have to be a pro-bate which can be a real messand is a great way for attorneysand the government to make freemoney!

Sometimes it is impossible toreally avoid a cloud because it isbased on what you are buyingand if the owners did their properdue-diligence when it came to

keeping upwith every-thing relatedto the owner-ship of theland.Sometimes

just plain old fate causes issues. The thing to remember for bothbuyers and sellers is to alwayshave an escrow when property isbought and sold, always. Yes,there is a small cost involved butso what, would you rather getsued or find out that you cannotsell the property in the future?Even worse, find out that the per-son that you bought the propertyfrom never put it in your name. Ithappens. Escrow keeps everyonehonest. So use real estate agentsand use an escrow and title com-pany to keep those clouds fromraining on your transaction.

A properly budgeted ChristmasDave Says

Dave RamseyCourierColumnist

Dear Dave,My wife and Iare still payingoff debt, so wedidn’t budgetanything forChristmas. Howmuch do youthink we should spend onclose friends and family mem-bers?

-DanDear Dan,Not having abudget forChristmasprobably isn’ta great idea ifyou want to have a happy mar-riage! It’s really not that difficult. Idon’t know if there’s a certainamount that works for everyone, because everybody’s circumstancesare different. But you must have aplan when holidays or other spe-cial occasions come along - espe-cially when you’re trying to get outof debt.

If you have kids, you certainlyneed to budget for them. They maynot get everything they want, butthere’s no reason there can’t besomething from Santa under thetree. You also need to budget a lit-tle something for your spouse. Thegood thing is you can have a littlefun with these gifts and make themmore from the heart than the wal-let.

Ramsey

What if you gave your wife acoupon that says you’ll cook a realdinner for her and the kids once aweek for the next three months?Or perhaps it’s a voucher for afree back rub any time she’s feel-ing stressed and tired. Maybe youcould find a nice but inexpensiveframe and put a favorite picture ofthe two of you inside. Things thatcome from the heart, or thatinclude little acts of kindness orserving the other person, can go along way. Those kinds of things

are especiallymeaningful tomost folksduring the hol-iday season.Trust me, Dan.You can have awonderful,

loving, quality Christmas withoutspending a lot of money. You’llhave to spend a little here andthere, but just make sure it’s anamount that’s appropriate for yourfinancial situation. If you’re mak-ing $200,000 and trying to get outof debt, that’s one thing. But ifyou’re making $20,000 a year andtrying to get out of debt, you needto do things that are creative anddon’t require a lot of cash!
