Kern River Valley information

What’s here ... and what’s nearMike DevichKern River Courier

If you’re visiting the Kern RiverValley, you’re wondering what’s to seeand do. Well, here is a primer on thatvery subject.

First of all, you are visiting a placethat is refreshingly behind the times. No Walmarts, no new car dealerships,no Olive Gardens, no casinos, no BestBuys. If you love Nordstrom’s, you’reout of luck around here.

But for those who love the great out-doors and a slower place where theycan relax, enjoy a small-town atmos-phere and just breathe easy, this is theplace for you.

If you need something or just likeshopping, try the local stores and seewhat they have. You’ll be surprised.

Kernville has a number of antiqueand collectible stores, if you do that sortof thing, only without the tourist-traphigh price tags.

If you haven’t noticed yet, the valleyis a mecca for water lovers. Fishing is agiven. Where can you get a fishinglicense? At just about every conven-ience store, marina and even some ofthe supermarkets.

Boating licenses? Same thing. Riverrafting? Best to go with a professionalservice, in season. There are many inthe valley.

Want to find out all about camping, campfires and the like? Go to one of thetwo Forest Service offices in the valley.Addresses are in the box at left.

Want a destination to go to? Hereare some great ones – Kern ValleyMuseum in Kernville, Silver City GhostTown in Bodfish, nice parks such asRiverside and Circle Park in Kernville,Wofford Heights Park and LakeIsabella Park, Reel Cinema in WoffordHeights (brand new big-city movies in

an old building with modern movie-projecting equipment), The Old OnyxStore (built in 1861), the Nuui CunniIndian Cultural Center at FrenchGulch, and the big sequoias at the Trailof 100 Giants (summer only). Or justtake your camera and photograph theold buildings or the fabulous scenery.

A bit of historyTwo towns, Kernville and Isabella,

had to be moved out of the way duringthe forming of the lake in the late 1940sand ‘50s. Isabella was moved south andrenamed Lake Isabella, and Kernvillewas moved north. The town ofWofford Heights is closest to the loca-tion of Old Kernville; Old Isabella wasnear where the Auxiliary Dam is today.

After the dams came in, realizationcame that although the water in thedam was not ours to keep, we may useit while it’s here. The area was promot-ed as a recreation destination and as aperfect area for retirement, away fromthe hustle and bustle of the city. Lateron, in the second half of the 20th centu-ry, whitewater rafting became a hugesport here. Recently, the valley hasbecome known as a premier mountainbiking area, and a mountain bike man-ufacturer has relocated here.

Recreation choices in the area aremany. Dry land sports vary from dirtbiking to hiking to climbing to dark skyviewing to birding and observingnature at its finest.

Be sure to visit all the towns here.Ringing the lake are Kernville, WoffordHeights, Lake Isabella/Bodfish, Mt.Mesa and Southlake. In the South ForkValley are Weldon and Onyx. Each hasits own unique personality and its ownstory to tell.

Leave your big-city ways behind;this is not the city. And we’re kind ofproud of that.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith

New DVDs reviewed in this col-umn will be available in stores theweek of Jan. 17.

PICKS OF THE WEEK"Buried" (R) -- Hands up: Who

wants to see Ryan Reynolds buriedalive? Yeah, me too. Well, in "Buried"we get our wish. Reynolds stars asPaul Conroy, a truckdriver who wakes upto find himself buriedin a coffin under 6feet of earth withnothing but a cellphone that's runningout of juice, a lighterand about 90 minutesof oxygen. With timerunning out on him,Conroy needs topiece togetherenough clues to determine his loca-tion so he can call for help (that is, ifthe cell phone doesn't go dead first).

Demonstrating an almostHitchcockian finesse, director RodrigoCortes does a remarkable job not onlyin finding impressive ways of shoot-ing in such a confined space, but inkeeping the dramatic tension taut aspiano wire throughout the entire film.

DOG OF THE WEEK"Death Race 2" (Unrated) -- How is

it even possible to screw up a "DeathRace" movie? All you need are a

bunch of cars with missile launchersand machine guns, hot chicks, ridicu-lously cool stunts and a few zippyone-liners. Well, director Roel Reine(yeah, I never heard of him either) hasmanaged to make this direct-to-DVDproduction a complete snooze-fest.Worst of all, he cast Danny Trejo, oneof the most badass actors on the plan-et, as a wise-cracking mechanic. Saveyour money and avoid this abomina-tion.

Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

I would like to apologize forthe intermittent fishing reportslately. I recently experienced aminor stroke, which has leftme cross-eyed asClarence the lion. It’s been quite anadjustment.

Today I did alittle shopping atone of myfavorite stores inKernville. A bitlate, I did what Inormally do at the end ofDecember – get a new fishinglicense. I didn’t see that onecoming. I am nowanother number inthat ever-growingbook of numbers. One thing is forsure; I proved that Ihave been a resi-dent of Californiafor at least six months. I didn’thave to pay as a non-resident, soI guess that’s good. But enoughidle chatter. Hey, sometimes acolumn is hard to write, especial-ly when I’m building my ark withall the rain we’ve had.

Trout action, according to agood friend, better known as“that plumber guy,” has been off

the hook in the general vicinityof Boulder Gulch, with fish in the1 to 2 pound class on a regularbasis. Here is a tip – if you arefishing from shore and you aresitting in your vehicle to avoidthe elements, please, no cat naps. You might just end up at the damfloating in your favorite mode oftransportation. Key word isfloating. Keep alert; the lakecomes up very quickly with thisamount of runoff. If youabsolutely must take your boat,be extremely careful. There is alot of debris of all shapes andsizes to get in your way.

Last but not least, the firstweek of January there will be astocking of those prize fish that

everyone hasbeen waiting for.You guessed it –the Alpers troutare coming. Thanks to Fredand the KRVchamber and allthose involved.

You are appreciated. Keep up thegood work.

Clouds will cancel the event. Nextstar party is Feb. 5. Questions? Call Rich at (760) 376-1291 or 376-6290.

Floods temporarily close PreserveKern River Preserve

Every 50 years or so the Kern RiverValley gets walloped with a period ofextended rains that wash out lots ofroads and culverts. It seems this win-ter might be that winter. Kern Countywas declared a state disaster area byGovernor Schwarzenegger after theDecember 17-19 storm.

Although damage to buildingsaround the preserve thankfully hasbeen minimal, the damage to roadinfrastructure is a bit more intense, sothe Kern River Preserve will be closedto vehicle traffic while we wring outand our staff can replace culverts.Anyone is welcome to walk in as longas it is safe.

Beginning Friday, December 17th,the rain gauge at the Sprague Ranchsection of the preserve recorded over9" of rain over 4 days.

The rains began to fall in the weehours of December 17th and KernValleyites would normally expectthem to taper off by mid morning and

stop, but this was no ordinary rain-storm. Never a deluge but a steadytenth-inch by tenth-inch, the rain keptfalling. By the end of Day One justover an inch had fallen. By day two,the rains increased to over two-tenthsan hour delivering a whopping 2.75"by the end of the day. This continuedon day three with a similar steadyamount falling.

We watched the South Fork gaug-ing station go from the 52 cfs record-ed at midnight to an astounding 5120cfs. This overtopped the road at FayRanch Road with a raging flood with-in nine hours. The pavement wasripped away with large holes silentlywaiting to trap unsuspectingmotorists in unseen chasms.

The bright spot on the preservewas the buildings remained intact. However, all roads, culverts andcanals suffered serious damage orwere destroyed. A lot of work is aheadfor our small staff.

Please help our general fund to helpwith the repairs.

Time for a new 2011 fishing licenseKern River Courier

It’s that time of year again.Anglers must buy a new fishinglicense.

A California sport fishing licenseoffers a full year of more fishingopportunities than any other statein the country. California has 1,100miles of ocean coastline, 4,172 lakesand reservoirs, 29,664 miles ofstreams and rivers, and 1,800 milesof bay and delta waters. A sportfishing license is an angler’s pass-port to these amazing opportunities.

In addition to native fresh andsaltwater fish, the DFG trout hatch-eries will plant roughly 7 millionrainbow trout in 2011 and salmonhatcheries annually release morethan 20 million young salmon.

Anglers 16 years or older arerequired to have a valid sport fish-ing license to take any kind of fish, mollusk, invertebrate or reptile(except for rattlesnakes).

Along with a sport fishinglicense, the DFG California FishingPassport Program challengesanglers to fish their way around thestate in search of 150 different fishand shellfish species. And like atraveler’s passport book, for eachsuccessful catch, participants willreceive special stamps in theirbooks to mark their accomplish-ments.

For more information about thePassport Program, please visitwww.dfg.ca.gov/fishingpassport.To learn more about fishing licens-es, go to www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing.

The bridgeover theKern Rivernear OldKernville isshown, dateunknown, but pre-1949.

Valley history: town of KernvilleThe beginnings of Kernville started in 1860. The story is that a man

named Lovely Rogers found a rock with flecks of gold in it on a hillsideoverlooking the Kern River. He picked up the rock to throw at his recalci-trant mule, when he saw the flecks of gold in it. Instead of throwing it,Rogers took the rock to another miner and was told it was well-paying ore.

Gold miners started to pour in, coming from the west over GreenhornMountain or through the Keyesville area, from the south through WalkerBasin or from the east over Walker’s Pass.

An entrepreneur by the name of Adam Hamilton heard about the goldstrike and came over Greenhorn Mountain, his mules laden with barrels ofwhiskey. He set up his barrels near Rogers’ gold find, and started a saloon.By mutual agreement his saloon was quickly moved down the river abouta mile on a little flat spot by the river, and the town of Whiskey Flat quick-ly grew up around it. Four years later, in 1864, the townspeople opted torename the town Kernville.

Kernville existed in that location for almost 100 years, long after the goldplayed out. It was located just northeast of the modern-day town ofWofford Heights. Kernville saw a lot of changes happen to the Kern RiverValley. Cattle ranching started to become important in a big way. In theearly 1900s electrical engineers from the city of Los Angeles came lookingat the Kern River for hydropower harnessing. Then Hollywood came call-ing, and Kernville became a popular place to make Western films.

In the late 1940s, the decision was made to put a government flood con-trol reservoir in the Kern River Valley, and Kernville residents were toldthey had to move to higher ground. They decided to form a New Kernvillea few miles north, and that’s where the town still is today.

Old Kernville is still remembered fondly by many longtime residents ofthe Kern River Valley.

Rod MiddleworthKern River Courier Columnist

As each winter arrives and Igrow older, I’ve noticed thatI'm not as sharp as I was theyear before.

Instead ofcounting timefrom my birth-days I useJanuary 1st asmy judgmentday. Let me giveyou an exampleof the dulling ofmy sharpness.

Around thefirst of the year my wife said tome, “I've noticed that the hotwater is not very hot.” Well, Isaid, I can fix that, I will turnthe adjustment knob on thewater heater to a higher posi-tion and it should get hotter.(Unless the thermostat is onthe fritz.)

Well, the water didn't getany hotter. In fact, she said itwas even cooler.

I went out to the adjustmentknob and determined that itwas turned as far right as itcould go. But the water wasn'tgetting any hotter. In fact, theheater wasn't even heating.

So I called a plumber (at $45an hour). When he arrived Iasked for his advice; would Ineed a new thermostat valve ora new heater?

"Well, let’s see," he said. Both of us got down on our

knees with flashlights in handand looked at the thermostatvalve. While I'm looking, hetakes the little red adjustment

knob and turns it to the LEFT.The heater kicked on and start-ed heating.

I said. "What was that? What did you do?"

He said, "I just turned theadjustment knob to the higherheat position".

I knelt there, stunned.Obviously I had been turningthe knob the wrong way. Everytime I thought I had adjusted itto a higher heat it went evenlower.

In my defense, I had to standon my head with a flashlightand look at the thing again. The knob does look like itshould adjust higher by goingto the RIGHT. But it’s theopposite.

I was stricken and theplumber just looked at me. Hewas nice and tried to make mefeel better by saying that atleast I didn't need a waterheater or thermostat ... yet.

As I wrote out a check for a10-minute 45 dollar visit, I wasmentally kicking myself in thetush.

I can assure you that thenext time he comes, I will reallyneed him.

And that's why in my lateryears, my wife no longer looksat me with adoring eyes andthinks I can fix everything. Andfrankly, I no longer think soeither!

Thomas RaticanNov. 19, 1926 – December 12, 2010

Thomas Ratican was born in Hollywood, Calif. He inherited his love ofactiing, directing and writing scripts from his father, who was involved inthe motion picture industry. He also worked for the L.A. Metro Water andPower Co. for 21 years.

Tom and his wife, Naomi, moved to Havilah in 1995. Naomi passed awayin 1997. They had a great love for the little community of Havilah. Tomserved as the president of the Havilah Centennial Group for nine years.

He was well-known for his artwork, especially his pen and ink drawingsof famous old-time cowboy movie actors, which for many years were pub-lished in the monthly Fencepost publication.

Tom had a great sense of humor, and a sweet-natured disposition. Hedevoutly loved animals, especially dogs (his own and everybody else’s!)

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Rose Ratican ofArizona, and a niece in Poway, Calif.

Obituary noticetion is fundamental to the geologyof our valley. You may recall frommy column how the “RoofPendants” of our valley wereformed. Briefly, in review, theyare thousands of feet of sedimen-tary layers that were laid downthrough millions of years ofoceanic deposition. Then theSierran Batholith of graniticmaterial began to rise, pushingthese sediments upward as ero-sional forces began cutting intothe softer sediments, slowly shap-ing our valley through the millen-nia.

What remains at Stine Point (aswell as at Robinson Point) are verti-cally standing metasediments. Thisis the essence of the weaknesses ofthese vertically standing, “incompe-tent” shales, sandstones, siltstonesand mudstones.

When these rocks are moistenedby water (in this case excessiveamounts of water!), the “platety”

clays present within these rocksbecome water-lubricated, swollenand very slippery, and lose the abil-ity to withstand the force of gravi-ty. They then slip along the now-vertical depositional beddingplanes like the leaves of a book, resulting in a landslide called aslump. (If these rocks had beenhorizontally-oriented, it would havebeen more difficult for them tomove across the more resistivebedding planes, thus landslideswould be less apt to occur – but notimpossible.)

In summary, any of the areaswithin our valley where themetasediments are vertically-ori-ented are extremely vulnerable tothis type of mass land movement, under the right conditions. It isprudent that the reader be awareof the dangers and observe safereticence when locating structuresthat could be destroyed by theforces of gravity and water.

My goal was to understandIsaiah 42:2-3, “He will not cryaloud or lift up his voice, or makeit heard in the street; a bruisedreed he will notbreak, and a faint-ly burning wickhe will notquench; he willfaithfully bringforth justice.”

The usual com-mentaries offeredworn out and out-of-date percep-tions. Not thatthey are untrue;they might be compared to1Corinthians 10:23 “‘All things arelawful,’ but not all things are help-ful. ‘All things are lawful,’ but notall things build up.” Then I found aminister, Richard Schwedes, whowrote about his visit to Tasmazia,a series of eight mazes inTasmania. He described the expe-rience as an exercise in frustra-tion. Does not life include exasper-ating circumstances from whichthere appears to be no satisfactoryway out? In fact, amazing origi-nally meant “To bewilder; per-plex.” Bewildering, perplexing andfrustrating is what life today oftenappears to be.

In fact, chapters 40-42 appearto be written to the exiles, encour-aging a trust in God, and anassurance of His rescue. The read-

er is amazed – in the originalsense. I tell you now, we do notknow a life where a very largeportion of Americans have beenkilled or taken to another countryas captives. The maze that hasAmericans bewildered, perplexedand frustrated is the idea that ourbehavior makes us good.

Isaiah gave Israel God’s judg-ment before he gave God’s com-fort. St. John’s letter says, “If wesay we have no sin, we deceiveourselves, and the truth is not inus. If we confess our sins, he isfaithful and just to forgive us oursins and to cleanse us from allunrighteousness.” 1John 1:8-9

As a teen, a teacher explainingBible study methods suggestedletting a Bible fall open, closingone’s eyes, placing a finger on thepage and reading that verse. Myverse was, “How can you say toyour brother, 'Brother, let me takeout the speck that is in your eye,'when you yourself do not see thelog that is in your own eye? Youhypocrite, first take the log out ofyour own eye, and then you willsee clearly to take out the speckthat is in your brother's eye.” Luke6:42. St. John’s and Isaiah’s wordsmay provide a way out. Is this away out of your maze in 2011?Happy New Year.
