B.Y.O.D. – School Council Decision
Pg.2 of 8
Over the past few weeks I have been introducing you to the particulars of the Yr 10 -12 BYOD. From Parental feedback School Council this week discussed the implications of extending the BYOD program to students in Yr 7-9. Many primary schools have BYOD programs, particularly Ipads, are we disadvantaging students from continuing the use of these at KTHS. Up until 2017 KTHS hasn’t been able to support Ipads on a large scale but now with infrastructure developments we have the capacity to support such a program.
Therefore the decision of School Council will be that in 2018 the BYOD program at KTHS will be extended to all students from Yr 7-12.
This is in no way a forced decision for every student to have their own device. The program is designed in such a way for parents and
students to weigh up the possibility of providing their own device and allowing them to do so.
The school will continue to -
Provide trollies or Library Access to computers for those that do not have their own.
(All Trollies have new devices this year, the ipads are 18mths old) Update BYOD handbook and Acceptable use Policy for Yr 7-9 students. Including the software requirements that students will need to purchase.
Provide technical support in the transition as per the BYOD handbook.
What do parents and Students need to do?
Read the BYOD Handbook which outlines device requirements, insurance, software. (NO CHROME OR ANDROID
devices)
Read the Acceptable Use Policy and sign the document to enable the technicians to connect the device to the KTHS
network.
Any Ipads coming from Primary School needs to have an external keyboards, secure storage and the minimal software
requirements. School Specific Apps will need to be purchased.
Over the next week the updates will become available and specific instructions given to students in our current 7 and 8 year levels.
Transitioning students will receive this information in the Information packs that are about to go out to families.
Acceptable Use Policy (Excerpt) Damage or loss of equipment:
Parents are responsible for making sure the device is covered under their insurance, so that it can be replaced if lost or damaged and student learning is not interrupted. The school must be notified if the device is damaged or lost so that a student’s learning program is not interrupted whilst being replaced.
User responsibilities: Students are responsible for:
bringing portable devices fully–charged to school every day
ensuring the device has appropriate virus protection
backing up data securely
carrying their device in an appropriate protective case at all times adhering to this Acceptable Use Agreement when using the machine, both at home and at school, including during lunchtime or when not in the classroom.
All Yr 9 students received a Booklet in Homegroup last week outlining all components of the program. Students in other year levels or who missed out can col-

The CFA website has a guide to show you how to write up a Survival Plan to suit your household and personal circumstances. Not everyone thinks clearly in an emergency, so a written and well-practised plan will help you remember what needs to be done during a crisis. Everyone needs to be-come fire ready.
Your plan needs to outline:
Actions before the bushfire season.
Actions during the bushfire season.
Actions leading up to fire risk days.
Your back-up plan.
Preparing your property – Vegetation Management
Clearing fine fuels from around your home (which are the same thick-ness or less than a pencil, such as grass, bark and leaves). Trim tree branches overhanging or bushes near your house.
Keep grass areas well trimmed and watered (no more than 10 cm high).
Rake up and reduce dead leaves (No more than 1 cm high) and flammable mulch from within 10 metres radius of your house.
Put together your Emergency Kit which includes:-
First Aid Kit; Protective clothing; Food and water; Wool blankets; Medications, prescriptions, mobile phone chargers, wallets, cards, keys and toiletries; A change of clothes.
A list of the contact numbers for your family, doctor, dentist, local hospital, chemist, vet, municipal councils, gas, electricity and water providers; Important papers (e.g. passport, insurance policies, Will)
Pet food, water and bedding if needed.
Getting ready to go:
Stay updated on fire information; Move livestock to a safe area and put pets in a safe place ready to load in the car.
Pack personal items and Emergency Kit in the car and position car ready to go.
Remove any material that could burn easily from around your house, on decks, verandas and pergola areas. This includes mats, outdoor furniture and woodpiles. Turn off gas supply. Close all doors and windows.
Make sure everyone is wearing protective clothing – long pants, long-sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes, such as leather boots. Clothes should be loose fitting and made from natural fibres like pure wool, heavy cotton drill or denim. Do not wear synthetics.
Tell people you are leaving & leave the front or access gate open.
Remember, being prepared, keeps us safe Cheers Meg
Clear gutters of leaves and rubbish; underfloor areas are enclosed or screened and seal gaps, vents and roof spaces to prevent embers entering.
Storing fuels, chemicals, and woodpiles away from your house.
Storing LPG gas tanks appropriately and should be vented away from your house. And remove flammable items such as boxes, doormats and furniture from decks and verandas.
FIRE SEASON IS HERE AND WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF OUR SAFETY PLANS IN CASE
Each current Year 10 student has undertaken Course Counselling and will have a copy of their transition timetable. Transition operates for two weeks and gives students a head start to unit 1. All students are expected to attend in full school uniform and attendance records will be kept.
Year 9 students that indicated they wished to undertake a VCE/VET subject have been spoken to about the process and will also
undertake the transition period to assess their suitability. Students/Parents are required to book course counselling in the second week of transition. If parents are available for these
interviews that would be great but not imperative.
The log in code for School Interviews is e6yup simply log into
https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the code to choose the time that suits you. The process is designed to assess the students motivation and readiness to complete a VCE subject. VET subjects will have 1 full day transition where they will enrol into the relevant certificates and units of competencies

So far, my trip has been amazing!! I’ve done so much and experienced so many different things.
School here in Canada is a lot different to at Kerang Tech High, we only have 4 periods a day
that go for approximately 1 ½ hours. I have 4 subjects that I have a class for every day,
I’m doing English, Maths, Intro (Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology) and Gym.
The school spirit at St. Joe’s is insane! We have pep rallies, which is where all the houses;
honour, respect, valour and strength come together in the gym and play games against one
another and have a cheer off. Everyone goes all out in their spirit wear as well. I’m not actually
sure what house I’m in so I just alternate between them all.
I’ve been to football games which are nothing like AFL, it’s exactly how it’s played in the movies.
One of my greatest experiences I’ve had is having the opportunity to see Niagara Falls.
It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen! I saw it at night when it’s all lit up and during the day.
I also during the day, went on the Horn blower, this is the boat that goes right up to the falls!
I underestimated how wet I would get, I came off soaked. The rain coats we were given did nothing
Recently we had our first good fall of snow and I had never seen snow so I was a little bit excited. I’ve made a snow man
that we named Frosty and did a show angel of course. I should admit I may have nearly fallen over a couple of times but
I’m told that its normal to fall in Winter.
Everyone is saying it’s going to be a good year for snow so by the time I come home I don’t think I’ll be able to handle the
hot weather. I could go on forever about my adventures, I’m having an absolute blast!
