BIG GAMES AGAINST LSU1976 - An upset 21-7 victory over the 16th-ranked Bayou Bengals in Lexington gave the Wildcats

a 4-2 record, marking the first time in 10 years that a Wildcat team had won four of its first six games.UK’s big play came in the first quarter after a punting exchange gave the Tigers possession on their 15-yard line. QB Pat Lyons’ intended pass to TB Charles Alexander was underthrown on the UK 44.Dallas Owens made a spectacular one-handed interception and went all the way to paydirt.

1998 - Seth Hanson made a 33-yard field goal as time expired as UK defeated No. 21 LouisianaState, 39-36, in Baton Rouge.

Taking the ball at their own 24-yard line, with the score tied at 36 with two minutes to go, theWildcats seemed to be playing for overtime with a pair of running plays into the line. But, on third-and-12, Quentin McCord ran an end-around and broke loose for 38 yards. A 14-yard pass from TimCouch to Jimmy Haley put the Cats in position for the field goal and Hanson drilled the game-winnerright down the middle. The victory was UK’s first road win over a ranked opponent since 1977.

OFFENSE GAINING GROUNDThe Kentucky offense is improving its points

per game output for the second consecutive season. After averaging 15.7 points per game in

2004, the Wildcats improved to 21.7 ppg last sea-son and are at 28.2 ppg for the current campaign.

An interesting note about the UK attack hasbeen the change in focus from last season. A yearago, the Wildcats had a run-based offense builtaround the considerable talents of tailback RafaelLittle, who led UK in rushing and receiving. Thisyear, with Little slowed by a knee injury and quar-terback André Woodson showing markedimprovement, UK has evolved into more of a pass-ing team, throwing for 257.2 yards per game.

The Cats are 3-1 at home this season.

Since its opening in 1973, Kentucky has played 210 games within the friendly confines ofCommonwealth Stadium. And indeed, a 110-97-4 record and a .531 winning percentage is evidencethat Commonwealth is a home field advantage for the Wildcats.

Kentucky has ranked in the nation’s top 30 in attendance every year since CommonwealthStadium was expanded in 1999. Last season, UK ranked 27th nationally in average attendance with62,450 per game.

touchdown pass total from last season.Woodson has completed 60.7 percent of his passes, good for 1,486 yards, 15 touchdowns, and three

interceptions. He has thrown at least three TD passes in four of six games after throwing for just six TDpasses in all of the 2005 season.

He’s responsible for 96 of UK’s 169 points this season which ranks him tied for ninth in theNCAA’s Points Responsible For category. Woodson’s quarterback rating is 155.24, ranking him fifth inthe SEC and 19th in the nation. He ranks second in the SEC passing yards per game (247.7) and isthird in total offense (239.2).

The 6-5, 232-pound, Radcliff, Ky., native threw three touchdown passes vs. Louisville, Texas State, and Ole Miss and is the first UK quarterback to do that since Jared Lorenzen threw for three-or-moreTD passes in three-straight games in 2002 (vs. UTEP, Indiana and Middle Tennessee). He also passedfor a career-high four touchdowns vs. Central Michigan.

GOIN’ DEEPWith strong-armed junior André Woodson at quarterback along with a talented receiving corps

and an improved offensive line, offensive coordinator Joker Phillips has given the green light forWoodson to throw the long ball.

UK is fourth in the SEC and 22nd in the nation in pass offense, averaging 257.2 passing yardsper game.

UK’s wide receivers are enjoying the downfield attack. Through six games, Dicky Lyons, Jr., isaveraging 18.4 yards per catch and Keenan Burton is averaging 17.1 yards per reception.

LYONS ON TOP 10 LIST It took sophomore wide receiver Dicky Lyons just three games to break into Kentucky’s top 10 list

for single-season touchdown receptions. He has seven TD receptions, tying him with Alfred Rawls(1988) at eighth place with seven. Lyons is one of just eight players in the nation to have caught seven-or-more touchdowns this season.14 Craig Yeast, 199810 Al Bruno, 1950

TURNOVER TURNAROUNDThe Kentucky defense is tied for first in the SEC with Alabama and tied for sixth in the nation in

turnover margin (+1.33). The Wildcats have generated a total of 15 turnovers this season, including atleast two turnovers in four of the last five games. UK forced two vs. Texas State, had a season-high fiveturnovers (four fumbles and one interception) vs. Ole Miss, forced two vs. Florida and four vs. CentralMichigan (three fumbles, one interception.).

It’s a huge turnaround from last season, when UK was minus-nine for the season, ranking last inthe SEC and 105th nationally in TO margin.

THEFT TRIOThe Wildcats have been especially effective this season at forcing opponent fumbles – and recov-

ering them. UK has forced an impressive 15 fumbles, recovering 10 (tied for second in the nation). UKforced six fumbles against Central Michigan (three recovered by UK). The Cats recovered 11 fumblefor the entire 2005 season.

Three Kentucky players have consistently wreaked havoc on the opponents. Junior MarcusMcClinton leads the nation with four forced fumbles, charting one fumble in four of UK’s six games. With two forced fumbles against the Chippewas, a career best, sophomore defensive tackle MyronPryor is tied for second in the nation with three. Linebacker Wesley Woodyard has forced two and istied for first in the SEC in fumble recoveries with two.

SCORING DEFENSEAfter six games, Kentucky’s scoring defense is on track to improve from last year’s total average.

Currently the Wildcats are allowing 27.7 points per game, an improvement from last season when 34.1points per game were surrendered.

PULLEY CAN PICK POSITIONCurtis Pulley’s position is listed as “QB” on the roster, but it could read “QB/WR/ST” as the

coaches are getting him in the game at wide receiver and on special teams as well. For the season, hehas completed 6-of-8 passes for 57 yards, rushed 11 times for 48 yards, caught 13 passes for 146 yardsand one touchdown, and has blocked a PAT attempt.

BLOCK THAT KICK!Kentucky tied the school record for most

blocked PATs in a season and in a game when itblocked two vs. Florida. One more blocked PATand UK will break the season record set in 2002and 2004. UK also had two blocked PATs vs.Florida in 2002. (Blocked kick stats have beenkept since 1997.)

Curtis Pulley blocked the Gators’ first PATattempt, his third career block. He blocked twofield goals last year at Ole Miss. Sean Murphyblocked Florida’s second PAT attempt. It was hisfirst career blocked kick.

LEGER MOVES TO OFFENSIVE LINEAfter two-plus years at defensive tackle and

seeing limited action so far this season in UK’sdeep rotation at that position, junior Jason Legermoved to right guard during the week of theFlorida game. According to Coach Rich Brooks,Leger played well vs. Florida, his first collegiateappearance as an offensive lineman. He has startethe last two games at right guard.

Leger is no stranger to that side of the ball ashe was a four-year starter as an offensive lineman, along with being an all-state selection in the D-Line, for Rockcastle Co. HS in Mt. Vernon, Ky.

RETURN GAME PICKS UP WHERE IT LEFT OFFKentucky was the only school to rank in the nation’s top five in both punt and kickoff returns last

season. For the season, UK averaged 26.4 yards on kickoff returns and 17.2 yards on punt returns, bothof which were school records.

The Wildcat returners haven’t slowed down this season. In six games, UK is one of just two schools(Oklahoma State) to rank in the nation’s top 11 in both categories. UK leads the SEC and ranks 11thin the nation in kickoff returns (26.3) and is second in the league and ninth nationally in punt returnaverage (18.0).

Individually, Keenan Burton is fourth in the SEC and 26th nationally in kickoff returns with a26.38-yard average. He set a school record with 185 kickoff returns at Louisville, including a 100-yardTD jaunt. Rafael Little averages 19.44 yards per punt return and leads the SEC (sixth nationally) inthat category.

Kentucky’s special teams coordinator is Steve Ortmayer, longtime NFL coach who won two SuperBowl championship rings as special teams coordinator for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders.

IMPROVED DEPTH CHARGE?Coach Rich Brooks appears to be making headway in his goal of building improved depth in the

Kentucky football program. Evidence can be seen in the quarter-by-quarter scoring. The Wildcats have outscored their oppo-

nents 70-57 in the second quarter, which had been a traditional trouble point for them. In contrast,UK was outscored 148-43 in the second quarter a year ago. The Wildcats have come close to holdingtheir own in the fourth quarter, trailing opponents 44-38 in that stanza.

HEALTHY BURTON SHOWS HIS STUFFFor two years, Coach Rich Brooks has been promising that a healthy Keenan Burton would do a

lot for the Wildcat offense.Burton, who has been sidelined for much of the past two seasons because of injuries, has fulfilled

that promise so far this season. In the opener at Louisville, Burton caught four passes for a career-high 127 yards, including a 73-

yard touchdown. He also had a school-record 185 yards in kickoff returns, including a 100-yard TDjaunt. His 312 all-purpose yards is the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. He caught apair of touchdown passes vs. Central Michigan and totaled 162 all-purpose yards, the fourth time inhis career he surpasses the 160-yard mark.

Burton leads the Wildcats in all-purpose yardage (133.8 yards per game), kickoff returns (26.4yards per return) and pass receiving (27 for 462 yards). He leads the SEC in all-purpose yardage, isfourth in kickoff returns and seventh in receiving yardage. He ranks 19th in the nation in all-purposeyardage and 26th nationally in kickoff returns.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONFrom 1966-68, Dicky Lyons Sr. was one of the most exciting players in Southeastern Conference

history as a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner at Kentucky. His son, sophomore Dicky Lyons Jr., has shown the same ability this season. In the season open-

er at Louisville he caught two passes -- four yards and 80 yards -- both going for touchdowns. He alsocaught three passes for 54 yards with two touchdowns against Texas State and had four catches for 83yards and two TDs vs. Ole Miss. It’s the first time a player has caught at least two TD passes in threeconsecutive games in school history. He also charted a TD reception vs. South Carolina.

Lyons Sr. and Jr. are believed to be the only father-son duo in NCAA history that has caught pass-

LITTLE ON WALKER AWARD WATCH LISTJunior tailback Rafael Little is on the presea-

son watch list for the Doak Walker Award, whichis presented to the nation’s top running back.

Little rushed for 1,045 yards a year ago, becoming only the sixth Wildcat in school histo-ry to surpass the millennium mark. In addition,he led the Wildcats in pass receiving with 46catches and paced the Southeastern Conference inall-purpose yardage and punt returns.

WOODYARD ON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LISTWesley Woodyard is one of 65 players

named to the preseason watch list for the ButkusAward, given to the nation’s top collegiate line-backer. The award is presented by the DowntownAthletic Club of Orlando (Fla.) and named forNFL Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus.

Woodyard led UK last season in tackles(100), tackles for loss (seven), and fumble recov-eries (four). He was fourth in the SoutheasternConference in tackles per game and was namedsecond-team Sophomore All-America and honor-able-mention All-SEC.

This season, Woodyard leads UK and rankssecond in the SEC with 9.7 tackles per game (58).

PRYOR SHOWS HIS STUFFSince last spring, Coach Rich Brooks has

said that sophomore defensive tackle MyronPryor had the ability to be a difference-maker forthe Wildcat defense.

That prediction had to be put on hold whenPryor sustained a sprained foot in the seasonopener at Louisville, giving him limited action inthat contest and forcing him to miss the TexasState game. But he came back with a vengeancevs. Ole Miss, as he played a part in three Rebelturnovers -- grabbing a pass interception, recover-ing a fumble, and forcing a fumble on a quarter-back sack.

Against Florida, Pryor charted four tackles,

including a quarterback sack for a nine-yard lossand had five tackles, including two sacks for 15yards and two forced fumbles vs. Central Michigan.

CRAIGMAN EMERGES AS A PLAYMAKERDefensive end J.D. Craigman, a 25-year-old

junior-college transfer, has emerged as one of theWildcats’ key playmakers this season.

In his first Division I collegiate game vs.Texas State, the former basketball player-turneddefensive end recorded a team-high three passbreakups. He followed that with a recovered fum-ble vs. Ole Miss and combined with Jamil Parison a quarterback sack vs. Florida. He came backwith another sack vs. Central Michigan.

Craigman’s athleticism could be attributed tohis basketball playing days at Senior High Schoolin Miami, Fla. After graduating in 1999, he decid-ed to hang up his high-tops for the work force. SCHOLARSHIP NUMBERS UP ... Since his arrival in 2003, Coach Rich Brooks

has had to rebuild the Kentucky team after inher-iting a program with low numbers of scholarshipplayers because of NCAA probation.

It’s been a gradual process. The good newsfor this season is that 76 recruited scholarshipplayers are available, and with scholarships award-ed to some walk-ons, that number will increase tothe low 80s -- close to the maximum of 85.

... BUT ONLY SIX RECRUITED SENIORS,FEWEST IN THE NATION

An interesting fact regarding the Wildcatroster, however, is that it’s thin at the top. Thereare only six recruited scholarship seniors on thisyear’s team. Along with Florida State and South

Carolina, who also have just six recruited scholar-ship seniors, that’s the fewest in the nation.

TAMME NAMED TO GOOD WORKS TEAMJunior tight end Jacob Tamme has been

named to the Good Works Team selected by theAmerican Football Coaches Association.

Tamme is one of only 11 Division I-A play-ers named to the team in honor of their commu-nity service.

“I appreciate the AFCA for its recognition,”Tamme said. “What we’re doing here is impor-tant, but when you go into the UK Children’sHospital, and see a child who would give any-thing just to put on a UK practice jersey for oneday, it puts it in perspective.

“There are a lot of players on this team whoare deserving (of being honored). Every time weask (for help with a service project), there’s alwaysenough guys to get it done. I think the guysunderstand how much it means to some people tomeet a UK student-athlete.”

Tamme serves as outreach chairman for theWildcat football team and has been very active in

WELCOME BACKOne of the best things Coach Rich Brooks

has done to improve his team this season is sim-ply welcome back a number of key players whowere injured in 2005.

A total of 17 starters and key reserves misseda total of 80 games because of injury last season. It was considered to be the most-injured team inschool history. Key players who return for the2006 season and missed significant parts of lastseason include tailback Tony Dixon, defensivetackle Lamar Mills, free safety MarcusMcClinton, wide receiver, Keenan Burton, widereceiver DeMoreo Ford, linebacker BraxtonKelley, offensive guard Fatu Turituri, and defen-sive end Durrell White.

ONE COACHING CHANGE IN 2006: SANDERSLEADING THE QUARTERBACKS

Kentucky had one staff change since last sea-son, as former Tennessee offensive coordinatorRandy Sanders was hired as UK’s quarterbackscoach.

Sanders coached 17 seasons at Tennessee, including the last seven as offensive coordinatorand quarterbacks coach. While Sanders was onthe UT staff, the Volunteers had a record of 162-46-2 (.776), won one national championship, four Southeastern Conference championships, and six Eastern Division crowns, and played in 16bowl games.

Sanders’ position has been a focal point thisseason with the presseason competition betweenAndré Woodson and Curtis Pulley for the startingrole. Sanders also is breaking in two true fresh-men, Will Fidler and Mike Hartline.

CCAATTSSCCEELLLLAANNEEOOUUSS• Kentucky had three players namedAcademic All-America last year -- most in thenation. One of those players, offensive tackleHayden Lane, returns for the 2006 season.• Wildcat superfan Jim Brown has an atten-dance streak of 391 consecutive home games. Hehas seen every home game since 1938, with theexception of 1944 (military service, World WarII). “UK’s spirit squad members, who’ve beenfeatured in everything from Southern Living toSeventeen, give us their top five reasons whythey’re the answer to the question, ‘Who’s No. 1?’

1. We’ve been invited to meet the presi-dent more times than Congress.

2. Our cheerleader adviser (T. LynnWilliamson) has more championship rings on hisfingers than hair on his head.

3. We receive approximately 250 tryoutvideos for about three to six new openings eachyear.

4. They don’t like us to perform at half-time. It cuts down on the concession sales.

5. Our squad represents approximately 20different states, including as far away as Alaska.”

IT’S A WILDCAT STATEKentucky is often referred to as a “basketball

state,” given the fact that UK arguably is thegreatest men’s basketball program in collegiatehistory.

However, we like to think of Kentucky as a“Wildcat state” because of the tremendous overallsupport for UK athletics. In 2005-06, Kentuckywas one of only eight schools to rank in thenation’s top 30 in attendance for football, men’sbasketball, and women’s basketball.

In addition, Kentucky has ranked in thenation’s top 30 in football attendance every yearsince Commonwealth Stadium was expanded in1999. On game day, Commonwealth Stadiumusually becomes the third-largest city inKentucky.

And, over the years, one would be hard-pressed to find a school with the ups-and-downsof Kentucky football, yet has the solid bedrock ofsupport enjoyed by the Wildcat gridders. Forexample, contrast Kentucky with other institu-tions from so-called “basketball states.”Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, andIndiana rank 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 9th (respec-tively) in all-time college basketball victories. Here is the average attendance for those schools inthe 2005 football season:School 2005 attendanceKentucky 62,450North Carolina 51,428Kansas 43,675Indiana 39,535Duke 17,485
