    Euronorm has accumulated experience in the application of winches in industry, the excava-

    tor sector and in shipping. Up until 2004, we were actively engaged in the supply of complete

    projects, service and maintenance of winches, pumps and underwater (IP 68) drives.

    In recent years we have started to concentrate more on the production of the winches on behalf of

    the engineering offices, project managers, retail sales staff and hoisting technology specialists.

    INTRODUCTION:

    General: Winches exists in various types and dimensions and for different applications. That isalso the reason why no standard overview can be given of drawings, dimensions and prices.Euronorm ensures that there is a solution to every application – and hence also for winches. Wetherefore draw up a customised quotation with drawings for every project. EURONORM manufac-tures winches on the basis of customers’ specifications. The winches can be sub-divided into maingroups: Hoisting winches, hauling winches, electric and hydraulic winches, capstans and winchesfor special applications.

    Cables: When selecting the cable, consideration must be given to the load to be handled and thepurpose. The breaking strength to be selected is heavily dependent on these factors. For a hoistingapplication, for example, the safe working load is 5x the necessary force. For a hauling winch,can be assumed. It is furthermore dependent on the speed and the number of layers. In the bot-tom layer, the force of the winch is higher than in the top layer. The speed is also oftenselected for the middle layer.

    Drum: The drum generally consists of a heavy cylinder with two flanges to contain the cable. Itfrequently has a groove that guides the first layer tidily around the drum. The thickness of theflanges and drum is calculated on the basis of the specified hauling force and the materials em-ployed. The length and diameter is determined by the cable thickness andstorage capacity (cable length). These dimensions frequently also determine the necessary speedof the drive and the torque at the drum shaft. The best material is naturally always used.

    The drive: EURONORM employs drives from its own import and can therefore select from a widerange for designing the right winch. The drives can furthermore be designed with various modulesand options in order to meet all the customers’ specific wishes. When the hauling speed and thediameter of the pitch circle on the middle layer is known, the speed can be determined. The

    necessary force, the output and operating factors determine the gearbox size. When the selectionhas been made, the values for the drive are input into the calculation as the starting point. For-mulae that are employed here can be found on the following page.

    The design: The materials and dimensions of the construction are calculated for the highest loadand the least favourable contact point of the load. An extra safety margin is calculated for opera-tion over prolonged periods, and the weld seams are precisely calculated.

    Lubrication: The lubrication is generally dependent on the type of drive employed. For wormgearboxes, the demands are slightly lower than for spur gears. Lubrication can sometimes also be

    necessary if the winches are at a standstill for prolonged periods. Information on lubrication ofthe drives and other moving parts can be found in the technical manuals for the winches suppliedor via the website www.euronorm.nl.

    Coating: The winches are provided with special coatings on the basis of the customer’s specifi-cations or if the application demands. We generally use colour RAL 5010 if no other colour isspecified. For winches used at sea, various coatings are applied depending on the application.

    Fields of application: Industry, fisheries, mining, shipping, theatres, cranes, windmills, maga-zines and in-house transport, concrete factories, excavator ships, tugs, etc.EURONORM

    CALCULATIONS FOR ASSESSMENT OF THE WINCH DIMENSIONS

    Load:  Actual load and/or safe working load (SWL) in Newtons

    Safety standard:  Depending on application, specification or approvals institution

    Reeving:  If the rope runs via return pulleys, a specification or sketch is necessary.

    Rope diameter:  Determine according to supplier’s table and SWL

    Rope breaking force:  Hoisting winches min. 5x working load

    Hauling winches min. 3x working load

    Drum diameter:  Hoisting winches min. 20x Drope

    Hauling winches min. 16x Drope

    Drum speed:  n = V/(3.14 x 2 x radius)

    For hoisting winches the radius of the outermost rope layer

    For hauling winches the radius of the first rope layer

    Number of layers:  Hoisting winch max. 3 layers

    Hauling winch max. 5 layers

    2 safety windings

    Operation:  Most winches can be calculated according to S2

    If continuous operation, please indicate

    Efficiency:  Planetary: approx. 0.95 depending on number of steps

    Spur gear: approx. 0.95

    Worm gear: approx. 0.6

    Output/torque:  P load = (M x n)/9550

    M=F x r (pay attention to layer/radius)

    Prequired = (P load/efficiency) x operating factors

    Wrap angle:  The angle that the rope forms at the contact point of the load in relation to

    the inside of the flange. Measured from the middle of the drum.

    This must not exceed 2 degrees. A rope guide may have to be installed.

    Tcontact Alfa= (1/2 x drum length)/distance to contact point.

    Diameter of flange:  D stc 1 of the first layer + 2 x (number of layers +1) x Drope

    Length of rope:  3 safety windings + Lrope

    (Lrun/speed of rope) -1) x (D stc1 + (0.866 x Drope) x (number of layers – 1)
