Kansas State FairDo not forget that the KansasState Fair is fast
approaching.The 4-H show is Saturday andSunday, September 11th
and12th. The steer show is onSaturday and the heifer showis on
Sunday starting at 8:00a.m. both days. The OpenPolled Hereford show
will beon Saturday, September 18thin conjunction with the
OpenHorned Hereford Show. Re-member this is a week laterthan it has
been in the past,so make sure that you markyour calendar.The show
willstart at 10:00 a.m. with alter-nating division between
thePolled and Horned cattle.Also note that the new build-ings are
supposed to be doneso this will be a good time togo and see what
changeshave been made at thefarigrounds. For more infor-mation
about the KansasStateFair go tokansasstatefair.com.
CHB comes to the
State Fair
The new Cattleman's SteakHouse at the State Fair hasofficial
signed up as a li-censed provider of CHB.They will be serving
CHBhambugers, steak sandwichesand more during the 2004Kansas State
Fair. The res-taurant is located in the newcattle barns.
TheCattleman's Steak Housesigned a 2 year agreementwith CHB to
serve theirproducts in the restaurant.So while you are at the
StateFair make sure to check outthe Cattleman's Steak Houseand try
some of the CHB.
The date for the Kansas Beef Expo is December 11, 2004.
The Beef Expo will be held in the new cattle barn, this will
alloweveryone to be in out of the weather. This is a
goodopportunity to get cattle out in front of other breeders
andcattlemen to sell. The December date also gives most of
theproducers a chance to get fall harvest over and done. Youcan
consign Bulls, Spring Heifers, Pen of 3 Bred Heifers,
and/orCow/Calf Pairs with the variety of animals that one is
allowed toconsign there should be an opportunity for every breeder.
Thedeadline for consigning cattle is September 25th. If you

Cool Temps and Good Cattle made a Great KPHA Tour!
GLM Herefords. Grant andLinda McKay along with theDettke Family
greeted theirguests. The final Stop for thetour was Springhill
Herefordsand G&R Polled Herefods at theStump home. One of the
mainattractions besides the cattlewas the Round Barn.
Afterintroductions of the Stump andRowland family's a steak
sand-wich supper was served. JackWard, Chief operating officerof
the AHA, gave a brief overview of the Breed Improvement101
workshop. At the conclu-sion of Jack's presentation, thecrowed
mingle for a while thenheaded home.
A hundred plus people cameout to enjoy a very pleasantbut
unusual August Day forthe Kansas Polled HerefordTour. The tour
started atPlainview Farms at Enter-prise, Kansas. The DonRiffel
family hosted the stopwith cattle also on displayby Colby Riffel,
Enterprise.The cattle looked good asalways with the PlainviewFarms
being able to talkabout their Division winnerat the Junior Hereford
Expoin Mississippi plus numeroushead in the top 3 placings.The tour
then went toCourtland, Kansas to theJensen Brother's show
barn.Along with the Jensen cattleon display were guest cattlefrom
Walnut Grove Farms(Valek Family) and RobertCriag, III. Jensen's
servedthe noon meal followed bytwo speakers. Bobby Craigwas there
to talked to pro-ducers about CHB and feed-ing your calves out and
Dr.Dan Moser from KSU dis-cussed how your EPD's arecalculated and
why theycome out the way they do.Both speakers grabbed
theaudience's attention be-cause the talks were stillbeing
discussed at the fol-lowing tour stops. FromJensens the tour

The Mississippi Herefordenthusiasts and the town ofTunica hosted
the 5th JuniorHereford Expo July 24 - 31. Themajority of the days
were not thetypical climate that most Kansanshad expected.
Top Kansas honors wereearned by Bailey McKay has sheworked her
way though the PeeWee Showmanship heats withher heifer "Ariel" to
the ReserveChampion Position. Also in thefinal line up was Katie Jo
Parks.
In other showmanship agedivisions, Audrey Hambright andAlex
Acheson made the first cutin a strong intermediate group.Brandy
Valek and Jason Brownearned their way through thefirst cut in the
senior division.Jason finishing in the top ten ofthat age group,
where they hadto fit an animal in front of thejudges for the final
placing.
In the judging of thecattle one class winner wasnamed from
Kansas, that beingJames Preuss with his August2003 bull, JP Mr.
Bond 3049. Theonly other bull exhibited fromKansas, JC Platinum
3103 ET,stood 4th for Jason Brown. Sixty-two polled and horned
bulls wereshown together this year.
All the state thirds wereearned in the steer division ofthe
show. James Preuss andKimber Evans walked out withthose in Class 2
and Class 5 ofthe 60 head/seven classes ofsteers. Kimber's had a
check inweight of 1100 with a WDA of2.34. James' weight was
1265with a 2.56 WDA. The top 10carcass steers were recognizedin the
ring. Kimber's steerplaced 7th in the CarcassContest. Later it was
learnedthat Audrey's placed 12th.Other steers were exhibitedBrandy
Valek, AudreyHambright and Tyler Schultz.
One Kansas team ofJessica Acheson, Katie Jo Parksand Bailey
Parks participated inthe Junior age Team MarketingContest. Jason
Brown, JessicaAcheson and Katie Jo Parksentered the Team
FittingContest. Bailey McKay helpedout the North Carolina groupwith
being their Pee Wee
member of that team. A number Kansansparticipated in the
JudgingContest. Top performanceswere made by the following.Lori
Hambright placed 2nd inthe Adult Division with theAdult Team of
Lori, KevinSchultz, Nancy Preuss, andLori Stanford placing 2nd
overall. The Junior Team ofJessica Acheson, Tyler Schultzand Shane
Watson placed10th. Individually Jessica was9th. The Kansas Pee
Weestook 2nd place team withmembers Bailey and SethMcKay, Wade
Hambright andKatie Jo Parks. Fifthindividual in that age group
was Katie Jo Parks.
Bailey McKay andKatie Jo Parks gave theirPee Wee Speeches. The
PeeWee Division is not placedand all participates
receivemedallions. The MississippiHereford Ladies sponsoredan
Impromptu AdvertisingPosters Contest, which KatieJo Parks won.
Eachcontestant was to design aposter around the theme of'Rollin on
the River'.

McKay earned seconds in theowned heifer division. Jason wasin
the March 1st - 9th Class, whichfell in Division IV of the
hornedshow. Bailey's 2003 9th ofFebruary heifer was in Class 106and
the Polled Division VII.
Others showing ownedheifers were: Katie Jo Parks,Shane Watson
and Kimber Evans.Bred and Owned Heifers wereexhibited by: Wade
Hambrightand Alex and Jessica Acheson.
Winning second place in thePhotography Colored ScenicPicture
division was Katie JoParks. Others submittingphotos were the
BaileyMcKay, and Brady, Brooke,Casey & Cody Jensenbrothers.
Wade Hambrightwon 3rd place in thePromotional Poster Contest.Cody
and Casey Jensen alsosubmitted poster entries.First place Junior
Golden BullAward went to AudreyHambright.
Brandi Valek placed 3rd in theWalter and Joe Lewis Award.She
also represented Kansasas our state Queen.

A number of cattleproduced by Kansas Breeders andexhibited by
other states' youth,were successful in the show ring.PVF, Margaret
Riffel of Enterprisewas breeder of the class winner inthe October 1
- 5th class. Thatentry PVF Levi's Pearl 379,handled by Emilee Jo
Kattkamp,Indiana, was later named theDivision II Champion. PVF also
hada 2nd place cow/calf pair exhibitedby Locke St John ,
Alabama.Schultz's, Malone's and Jensen'shad also sold exhibited
cattle.
Melanie Snavely ran acampaign for the national board.There were
numerous qualifiedcandidates this year. Melanie isbeing encouraged
to run again atanother time. Kristi Bishop ofBasehor finished her
term on theboard this year.
Sunday evening after thestall curtains and stall cards werehung,
Greg and Paula Achesonhosted a state cookout consistingof
hamburgers, homegrownvegetables and etc. ThanksAchesons.
Once Darla Moore hadcompleted her Pollette Boardduties, she
treated the barn crewthree different mornings with apiping hot
breakfast served fromher on-site skillet. That was a firstfor the
state and a tradition that
we all hope she keeps up.Thanks Darla.

Next year the 6th AnnualJunior Hereford Expo will be heldon the
Wisconsin StateFairgrounds at West Allis,Wisconsin, which is a
suburb ofMilwaukee. The theme for theevent is "The Great
HerefordDrive". The dates are July 9 -16,2005.
Receiving 3rd place inthe prestigious Walt and JoeLewis Award
was our ownBrandy Valek. Brandy was alsobusy throughout the
weekwith various Queen duties andmeetings. Jason Brown andBrandy
Valek were selected bytheir state peers to be theOutstanding State
JuniorMember this year. PaulaAcheson served as aninterview
judge
For the fifth year in
a row, Bret GivensConstruction and GivensPolled Herefords
havesponsored t-shirts for theKansas exhibitors at theHereford
Junior Expo.Juniors wear these on theday of the Judging
Contest,Team Fitting and TeamMarketing. They certainlyadd to the
unity of thegroup and many were seenwearing previous years’shirts
on other days at theshow.

The 3 on 3 Basketballwas once again a popularcompetitive event.
The PeeWee Team, who placed 2nd,was composed of WadeHambright and

South Central HerdsThe 2004 Nebraska
Hereford Tour will be heldSaturday and Sunday, Sep-tember 11th
and 12th. Thefirst stop will be at 8:30 am atRutt Herefords
nearCampbell. From there thetour will visit the Gene Bonerherd near
Red Cloud, andthen head to Schutte andSons near Guide Rock
forlunch.
After lunch the groupwill visit Stillwater One PolledHerefords
near Lawrence,McM Polled Herefords nearAyr and then conclude atDana
Polled Herefords displayat Quirk Land and Cattleheadquarters near
Hastings.At the Dana stop, Jack Ward,COO of the AHA will presentthe
Hereford Breed Improve-ment 101.
Certified Hereford Beef Calf Sale
During the month of January the past couple years a
CertifiedHereford Beef Calf Sale has been held at the Beatrice
77Livestock Barn in Beatrice, NE. Due to change in ownership weare
now trying to line up this sale in Marysville, Kansas during
thissame time. This is an excellent opportunity to bring
Herefordcattle together. In the past there has been a good market
forthese calves with CHB buyers and other interested local
buyersbidding on the cattle. If you would like more information

Kansas Queen andPrincess
The second day willstart at the Deichmann Here-fords near
Central City andthen travel to a brunch stopat Fleischmann Family
Farmsnear Osceola. At this stop,Person's Bar M Herefords willalso
have a display.
Don Crays and Familynear Tobias will be the nextstop and then on
to Capek'sPolled Herefords nearMilligan.
The final stop of thetour will be at the FilmoreCounty
Fairgrounds in Genevawith displays from PriefertFarms of Fairmont
and VernonYost & Sons of Geneva. Atthis stop, the Priefert
familywill also be celebrating Neiland Jean's 50th
weddinganniversay.
