ROYALS WIN ANOTHER THRILLER--For a second-straight night, the Royals used an 11th-inning home run to break a tie and claim a 2-0 series lead in this best-of-five American League Division Series...this time, Eric Hosmer played hero, blasting the first pitch he saw deep in the California night after Lorenzo Cain opened the 11th with an infield hit...Kansas City became the first team in Major League history to hit extra-inning home runs in consecutive postseason games...Alex Gordon then walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on Salvador Perez’s RBI single to give KC an insurance run...Greg Holland recorded his second save in as many nights, working around a two-out throwing error...rookie Brandon Finnegan earned the win, the first of his career, pitching the bottom of the 10th...the Royals took the early lead when Hosmer singled and reached second on an error in right field, scoring on Gordon’s RBI single...the Angels evened the score in the sixth when two men reached with two outs against Yordano Ventura and Albert Pujols singled to right...Ventura pitched the first 7.0 frames, allowing just one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts, becoming the first Royals rookie to start a postseason game since Bret Saberhagen got the assignment in Game 2 of the 1984 ALCS...KC’s bullpen combination of Wade Davis, Jason Frasor, Finnegan and Holland combined to blank the Angels on one hit over the final four innings... KC’s 2-0 lead in the series marks the first time the club has been ahead 2-0 in a postseason series since the 1980 ALCS when the Royals swept the Yankees in three games...the victory was also KC’s sixth-straight in postseason play, dating back to Game 6 of the 1985 World Series, the longest streak in franchise history. MEDIA SCHEDULE--Today’s off-day workout by the Royals is optional as the team arrived home from the West Coast early this morning...Manager Ned Yost will meet with the media in the Level One Interview Room at 4 p.m., with Game 3 starting pitcher James Shields available at 4:15 p.m....one other selected Royals player will also be at the podium at 4:30 p.m....the Angels are not scheduled to arrive until later this afternoon, with Manager Mike Scioscia, Game 3 starting pitcher C.J. Wilson and a selected Angels player available in the interview room between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ROOKIES PLAYING BIG ROLES--Three Kansas City rookies have played large roles already in this series, as right-handed pitcher Yordano Ventura, left-handed pitcher Brandon Finnegan and outfielder Terrance Gore have made their presence felt...Ventura started last night’s game and tossed 7.0 quality innings, becoming just the third Royals rookie to start a postseason game, joining Bret Saberhagen (1984 vs. Detroit) and Mike Jones (1981 vs. Oakland)...Finnegan has made a pair of scoreless appearances in the series, earning the victory last night...he became the youngest Royals pitcher (21 years, 172 days) to win a postseason game for KC, passing Saberhagen, who won Game 3 of the 1985 World Series at 21 years, 194 days...he was also just the fifth pitcher to record his first Major League win in the postseason and first since David Price in 2008...Gore has not had an at bat in the series, but stolen a pair of bases as a pinch runner against the Angels and also had one vs. Oakland last Tuesday. BONUS BASEBALL ABOUND--Kansas City became the first team in Major League history to play three-straight extra-innings games to open a postseason, winning all three of them...in fact, they are the first club to play in three consecutive extra-inning games at any time during the postseason since the 1980 National League Championship Series, when Philadelphia and Houston played four-straight contests (Games 2-5) that couldn’t be decided in regulation...last night was the sixth extra- inning postseason game in franchise history, with KC now 4-2 all-time...only five other clubs (1986 New York Mets, 1991 Minnesota Twins, 1996 New York Yankees, 2003 Florida Marlins, 2004 Boston Red Sox) have won three extra-inning games in a single postseason and all of them have gone on to win the World Series. ALDS 25-MAN ROSTER--The Royals made a couple of alterations to the roster for the American League Division Series...KC will have an 11-pitcher staff with Tim Collins and Jason Vargas added from the inactive list for the Wild Card game, while deactivating infielder Jayson Nix and outfielder Raul Ibanez...the ALDS active roster consists of: PITCHERS (11): Wade Davis, Tim Collins (L), Danny Duffy (L), Brandon Finnegan (L), Jason Frasor, Jeremy Guthrie, Kelvin Herrera, Greg Holland, James Shields, Jason Vargas (L), Yordano Ventura.
