INVITATION FOR FAMILIES TO HOST STUDENTS VISITING KALINDA FROM JAIN INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL (JIRS), INDIA IN 2017.

INFORMATION NIGHT – NEXT TUESDAY 6TH DECEMBER AT 3:45pm - STAFFROOM Dear Parents/Guardians, We have received confirmation that a number of students from our sister school in India, Jain International Residential School in Bangalore (JIRS), will be visiting Kalinda in early February next year. The students will here for 10 days from 4

th - 14

th February. The age of the students will be from 10 – 16. The older children

will be attending Ringwood Secondary College on most days and the younger children will be with us at Kalinda. They are looking forward to staying with Australian families while they are here as part of our Asia Education Program. Mrs Ambuj Sharma, Junior School Principal at JIRS, will again be accompanying them. We are very excited about offering this opportunity to our Kalinda families. We would try and place students with Kalinda students of a similar age, however this does not exclude families who have children who are older or younger children if you would really like to host a child. There is a mixture of girls and boys so be sure to contact me ASAP for your preference. . This will be a time for your own children to develop an international friendship which can be sustained by continuing communication before and after the visit. Kalinda students will have the first hand opportunity to teach others about our country and culture. Hosting a student is easy! It is a bit like a sleepover that lasts for a few days. It is a voluntary gesture so there is no remuneration from the school but the experience should be a very positive one for your family. The JIRS students are coming from a boarding school environment so they are used to being away from their parents. They can share a bedroom with a child of same age or gender. They are here to experience Australian lifestyle so they can go to sporting events, etc with your family. You do need to take very good care with them, just as you do with your own children! As they are arriving on a Saturday, we ask that you show them around over the weekend, whether that be in the city or countryside. They will come to school every weekday with your child. Our families who hosted visiting JIRS students in 2014 found it to be a very rich and rewarding experience, both for the parents and the students. We can definitely recommend being a Host Family and urge you to apply. After we have received your Expressions of Interest, an information session will be organised to go into further detail regarding this visit. Below is the information about arrival and departure dates. Students arrive in Melbourne on Saturday 4

th February

Students leave Melbourne on Tuesday 14th February If you are interested in hosting one or two of the students from JIRS, please come along to the Information Night on Tuesday, 6

th December. This will be held at 3:45pm in the Staffroom.

Kalinda’Wishing Tree

28th

November– 9th

December

Kalinda Primary School Junior School Council Reps would like to ask if you are

able to bring a pre–loved, or a new present for the Wishing Tree.

The presents will be placed under our Christmas tree up at the office after 28

th

November. The presents will be delivered to children from ages 5 to 16 years

whose parents cannot afford presents. This year the donations will go to Doncare.

Christmas Toy Giving Program at Doncare

Since 1969, Doncare has provided support to families, the aged, youth and disadvantaged in the City of Manningham and surrounding areas. Our approach to working with the community operates on three levels: providing assistance, prevention through support and education and enlisting community involvement. Each year Doncare coordinates a Christmas Program and new toys are distributed to families of low income with children, under the age of 18 years who otherwise may find it a challenge to provide the type of Christmas for their families that everyone hopes to enjoy at this time of the year. Each and every one of those toys comes to Doncare from generous donations from individuals, families, schools and groups in the community over November and December and donations are always welcome and appreciated.

Twice a week, two Junior School Council Reps will come around with a basket.

One to collect the presents in and the other that will have cardboard Christmas

trees or stars in it, which we will give out in return for your generosity and

donating a gift.

Please bring the presents in

from 28th

November to 9th

December.

Please wrap your presents with a small card on the front stating whether it is for a

boy or a girl

and for which age group the present is suitable.

Thank you very much from the 2016 JSC Reps

JAPANESE CORNER I want to say thank you to the lovely Davies family for hosting me for three weeks. They are my first host family in my life and I had really happy time with them. Before I stayed at their house, I felt a little nervous, but they were so friendly and kind, I felt happy and relaxed at their house. The first day I came to their house was AFL day, so they had a party at their house. I enjoyed decorating their house with her sons and watching the game on TV with them. It was my first experience to watch AFL and I enjoyed watching it. Michelle’s family also took me to the Healesville Sanctuary and Michelle’s sons explained to me a lot about animals. They really love chocolate and so do I, so we went to the chocolate factory at Yarra Valley and we enjoyed a happy sweet time! Michelle’s son and I also made an origami Pikachu and paper airplane and played with it. That was fun! And we also played with ball and cards. One day I cooked Japanese food curry and rice. It was their first time to try it, and I was happy they said they liked it! When I left their house to go to the next host family, I felt a little sad to say goodbye to them, but fortunately, we can meet at school and sometimes go out together. I would like to invite Michelle’s family to my house in Japan someday! Thank you to Michelle and her family!

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 4 – Week 9

Dear Parents/Guardians, Hello and welcome to OSH News. This week has been busy at the multi-purpose room. We have all started to get excited about Christmas and the holidays. We made Christmas trees and ornaments for our OSH Club Tree using lots of glitter and recycled cardboards. Lucy and Sofia made beautiful creations and went home quite bedazzled themselves. We have been playing colour tiggy and generally wearing ourselves out improving our climbing skills on the monkey bars and playground, Thiyara and Sophie did a great job running a competition for gymnastics. On our menu this week were; fruit platters, Cheese rolls fresh from the warm oven, build your own nachos, Milo, Pita bread and dips and yoghurt. The children have been so impressive in their roles as Room monitors; we have noticed Bella, Benjamin and Zach really do a wonderful job with the sports equipment. We have been enjoying group time too with games of fruit salad, octopus and dodgeball. We have really loved seeing the children’s skills improve and Michelle is so proud of all progress shown in reading in particular. Bookings for 2017 are now open, I know many of you plan to book in your children for the coming year. We encourage early booking to avoid disappointment. We are planning lots of exciting things for Term 1 2017 and are making space for our new equipment and a revamp of our existing spaces – keep your eyes peeled!

Our Family communication book is always on the sign on desk for anyone wishing to leave comments, suggestions or queries. We appreciate your feedback for our program and our team. Would you be brave enough? On Monday 19

th December 2016 at lunchtime, Zoe & Keira will be shaving their heads to raise money for the

Leukaemia Foundation. Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are types of blood cancer. They can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. More than 60,000 Australians are living with blood cancer or related disorders, and every day another 35 people will be diagnosed. Blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. This cause is very close to Zoe’s family as her Aunty Tara died in 2008 from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia; she was only 39. If you would like to donate to either of the girls, please click on the links below or go to http://worldsgreatestshave.com and search for the girl’s names to find their pages. Or if you would like to bring along a gold coin donation for the girls on the day it would be really appreciated. Thunderstorm asthma: Supporting students Thunderstorms have been linked to epidemics of asthma, especially at the end of Spring, when grasses are flowering. An asthma attack can be life threatening. Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should call 000. Anyone with a known history of asthma is at risk of experiencing an exacerbation of their usual symptoms at this time. In addition, people who do not usually experience symptoms of asthma but have a history of allergies may be at increased risk. The common signs of asthma are difficulty in breathing (gasping for air), chest tightness and wheezing. If a child's condition is deteriorating, parents or guardians should seek urgent care. Signs of rapid deterioration include little or no relief from a reliever inhaler, inability to speak comfortably, or lips turning blue. People with asthma should continue to use their usual medications. Where possible, stay inside when the weather is windy with high pollen counts or dust.

Actions required If the child's symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing, call 000. For any child having an asthma attack, the four-step asthma first aid, which is: Sit the person upright and give reassurance – do not leave them alone. Without delay, give the person four separate puffs of their blue/grey reliever medication (such as Airomir, Asmol, Bricanyl or Ventolin). If using a puffer (like Ventolin or Asmol), this should be taken one puff at a time through a spacer. Ask the person to take four breaths from the spacer after each puff of medication. Wait four minutes. If there is little or no improvement, repeat steps 2 and 3. If there is still no improvement, call 000 for an ambulance immediately. Repeat steps 2 and 3 continuously while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
