As part of the two month long activities at Fablab Bo-hol, a Basic Arduino Workshop was held. During the activity, technology enthusiasts learned Arduino, an open-source electronic prototyping platform that cre-ates interactive electronic objects. Workshop partici-pants were able to make arduino projects using open source data and up-cycled materials such as old cans, toy parts and paper boards.

The opening of schoolyear 2015-2016 is fast ap-proaching and the Department of Trade Industry has begun its campaign in ensuring reasonable prices and ample supply of school supplies that are under the list of basic necessities and prime com-modities of the Republic Act 7581 or the Price Act. Among the school supplies that are in the DTI list of basic and prime goods and are frequently being monitored on their supply and prices are notebooks (composition, writing and spiral), pad paper (grades 1-4, intermediate), ballpens, and, pencils. “Simultaneously, DTI will conduct its monitoring activities to check not only the reasonableness of prices and the availability of supply of school sup-plies but also the compliance with specific stan-dards and labeling requirements”, states Undersec-retary Victorio Mario Dimagiba of DTI Consumer Protection Group (CPG).

According to the Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, any manufacturer, importer, distributor or retailer that does not comply with the requirements of the Philippine National Standard (PNS), shall face admin-istrative charges, which include a maximum fine of P300,000 per violation. The DTI-CPG, through its Fair Trade Enforcement Bu-reau (FTEB), adds that school supplies are among the various non-agricultural products that are being moni-tored every week. Consumers can report or file complaints against unsafe school supplies to DOH/ FDA or overpriced and unla-beled school supplies to the nearest DTI office in their area.

In May, DTI conducted training of business counselors to handle Negosyo Centers, which the regional office is eyeing to set up in June this year. Around eight centers will be put up across the region, two of which will be in Cebu. DTI 7 Director Asteria Caberte said at least two business counselors will man Negosyo Cen-ters. The business counselors, who will either come from the DTI or the local government unit (LGU), are tasked to help diagnose business problems and advise business solutions to mi-cro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The Business One-Stop and Business Re-source Centers and other SME Support Cen-ters in the region will be converted to Negosyo

Centers. The Negosyo Center project is a partnership with the DTI and LGU. The establishment of Negosyo Centers is a pri-ority program of the department for the develop-ment of MSMEs. The centers will provide a package of services such as business registra-tion assistance, business advisory, business advocacy and information to MSMEs for their development. MSMEs account for more than 99 percent of all establishments in the country, which comprise 66 percent of the total employment in the private sector.

DTI Negros Oriental conducted a Diskwento Caravan in Sta Catalina on April 17-18, 2015. There were 15 participating establishments and 1,265 beneficiaries.

In May this year, the Diskwento Caravan in Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental was featured in CNN Philippines. The Diskwento Caravan is one of the banner programs of the DTI that aims to help consumers stretch their budget through price discounts offered by participating manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers.

In preparation for this year’s school opening, the

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) held

“Balik Eskwela Diskwento Caravans” in the prov-

inces of Central Visayas.

In Negros Oriental, Diskwento Caravans were

rolled out in Sta Catalina on April 17-18 and in

Manjuyod on May 15-16.

Meanwhile, Diskwento Caravans will be brought

to buyers in Siquijor on May 22-23, in Bohol on

May 27 and May 30-31.

The Diskwento Caravans is made possible with

the participation and cooperation of Local Govern-

ment Units (LGUs, Consumer Welfare Associa-

tions, as well as retailers and manufacturers in the

region.

With the Diskwento Caravans, consumers can

avail of discounts on school supplies and other

products. Balik Eskwela Diskwento Caravans

offer school supplies and items such as bags, uni-

forms and shoes and prime commodities like

bread, sardines, cooking oils, processed meat,

and detergent bars.

In order to take advantage of the influx of buyers

to the Diskwento Caravans, consumer education

is often conducted through parlor games, raffles

and other fun-filled activities.

The Diskwento Caravan is one of the banner pro-

grams of the DTI that aims to help consumers

stretch their budget through price discounts of-

fered by participating manufacturers, distributors

and wholesalers.

The DTI’s Diskwento Caravan started in 2008 and

is envisioned to improve consumer access to ba-

sic and prime commodities.

The FabSummer: 2D Basic Illustrator + Laser Cutting workshop was held on April 28-29, 2015 at the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) in Bohol. The training featured data composition for digital fabrication. The data was executed using the Laser Cutter. Participants were able to understand the mechanisms and ways to make their ideas into proto-types by making the data, and operating the laser cutting machine.

The DTI 7 organized a meeting with KM and IT offi-

cers (KMO & ITO) last May 8 to fast-track the imple-

mentation of the Data Tracking & Monitoring, Network

Attached Storage and Customer Relationship Man-

agement Systems throughout the region.

Present during the meeting were: KM Champion Maria

Elena Arbon (DTI Bohol PD) , Krystle Jade Bato (DTI

NOPO KMO), Danny Atabay (DTI Cebu alternate

KMO & ITO), Roy Marfa (DTI Cebu KMO & ITO),

Vierna Teresa Ligan (DTI Bohol KMO, PD Nimfa Vir-

tucio (DTI Siquijor KMO), Jojisilia Villamor (DTI7 KMO)

and Bernard Cabasisi (DTI7 ITO).

With the Knowledge Management culture given more

prominence within the department, these KM tools

were developed by the DTI 7 to facilitate knowledge

exchange among provincial and regional offices.

Network-attached storage (NAS) is a file-level computer

data storage server connected to a computer net-

work providing data access to a heterogeneous group of

office personnel.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a system

for managing an organization’s interactions with current

and future clients. It often involves using technology to

organize, automate, and synchronize customer service

and technical support.

The Data Tracking and Monitoring System (DTMS) is an

efficient monitoring/ tracking tool for office communica-

tions.

As Negosyo Centers are set-up by DTI in the provinces

of Central Visayas, these KM tools shall become more

relevant and crucial to the project’s success.

The LGU of Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental has a Meat Processing Project under the DTI-BUB pro-gram. One of the components of the project is a benchmarking visit to processed food factories and pasalubong centers in Cebu City. The project aims to upgrade technology by establishing a viable meat processing center and pasalubong shop in Sapang Dalaga.

The DTI 7 Knowledge Management Team held its 1st KM Meeting for the year on May 8 at the DTI7 Conference Room. Topics tackled during the meeting included tackle the installation and usage of the Document Tracking, Network Attached Storage and Customer Relations Management Systems at the Regional and Provincial Offices .

The Department of Trade and Industry-Cebu Provincial

Office (DTI-CPO), in cooperation with the Department of

Health-Food and Drug Administration (DOH-FDA), DTI-

Bureau of Small and Medium Enterprise Development

(BSMED), and the DTI-Trade Related Technical Assis-

tance Project 3 (TRTA 3), conducted a training on Food

Safety and Food Licensing and Registration for

MSMEs on April 16 – 17, 2015 at Cebu Grand Hotel,

Cebu Capitol Commercial Complex, N. Escario St.,

Cebu City.

The activity was attended by 150 micro, small and me-

dium enterprises, food manufacturers, producers and

food service providers in Cebu. The activity was meant

to address the need of MSMEs to become more com-

petitive especially in the light of the ASEAN Economic

Community Integration.

The two-day training laid emphasis on Food Safety Act

of 2013, Food and Drugs Administration Licensing and

Regulations, Food Safety Best Practices (HACCP, GMP

& GHP), Online E-Registration and E-Licensing, among

others.

The Food Safety Act of 2013 or R.A. 10611 is a law that aims

for a high level of food safety, protection of human life and

health in the production and consumption of food. The law also

aims to protect consumer interests through fair practices in the

food trade.

DTI Cebu conducts food safety training

and phytosanitary conformity and rapid response facility compo-

nent of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Trade Related

Technical Assistance (TRTA) Project 3.

ASEAN Community and DTI Services in the Region. Doing Business in Free Trade Areas is DTI’s trade advocacy and information campaign to increase exporter awareness of the country’s preferential trade agreements. Since its launch in 2010, the program has also become a venue for exporters to navigate the complex Philippine FTA markets, including ASEAN, China, Korea, India, Ja-pan, Australia, and New Zealand.

On May 27, the Department of Trade and Industry conducted an Informa-tion Session on Doing Business in Free Trade Areas at Dao Diamong Ho-tel, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Matters on Doing Business with EU using GSP +, Basic of Exporting and Doing Business with Japan Areas were discussed by Export Marketing Bu-reau staff Ma. Jaena Go-aco. Samuel Tulay and Noemi Tansengco. DTI staff Jojisilia Villamor and Jude Guieb also talked on Doing Business in the
