DO YOU KNOW

Q. Who is the fourth generation armed forces personnel who rose to the highest rank in the Indian Air Force

Answer for the “Do You Know” Question of Apr 2015

He is none other than our most unsung hero the first and living Marshal of the Air Force Marshal Arjan Singh DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross – WW II) and Padma Vibushan for exceptional distinguished service during 1965 war. Arjan Singh was born on 15 April 1919 in Lyallpur in the Punjab in what was then British India in a military family. His father Darbara Singh was a Naik in the Hodson's Horse at the time of his birth and retired as Risaldar. He served in World War II and was wounded in Burma and retired from the Army in 1949. Arjan Singh along with his father faught valiantly in the WW II. His grandfather was Risaldar Major Hukam Singh, of the Guides Cavalry between 1883 and 1916. His great-grandfather was Daffadar Sultana Singh, among the first two generations of the Guides Cavalry who was martyred during the Afghan

campaign of 1879.

Arjan Singh to his credit has the following in the Indian Defence History as first:

Distinction of commanding No. 1 Squadron (The Tigers) the oldest squadron of

rdthe Royal Air Force from 3 September 1943 to th15 Dec 1944.

Arjan Singh, C.O. of No. 1 Squadron IAF, being handed command during World War II.

This Squadron under his command has the distinction of making aviation history of covering war front of 200 miles in Burma. During the month of August 1944 they had 354 sorties, and during inclement weather in September 1944, 292 sorties. Finally, in October they had a record of 439 operational missions, totaling to 780 flying hours dislodging the Japanese entrenchments and fortifications. For this act of Valor during the battles of Imphal and Burma, 1944-45 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Lord Mountbatten, the Supreme Commander of South Eastern Asia Command at the theatre of war itself.

DO YOU KNOW Continuation

He is the youngest Air Force officer to have attained a record of over six years as Air Vice Marshall.

After the post of Chief of Air Staff was elevated to Air Chief Marshall he was the first one to hold this rank for five and half years which is the longest tenure for any Chief of the Army, Navy and Air Force.(15 Jan1964 to 1970) He has flown 65 types of aircrafts.

In 1967 he had the unique honor of being invited to take the salute at passing out parade of Royal Air Force Flying College, Cranwell, England from which he had graduated.

He also has the distinction of being the Ambassador of India for the longest period as follows:

l1971-1974 Ambassador to Switzerland and the Vatican.

l1974 – 1976 High Commissioner to Kenya

l1989 - 90 Lieutenant Governor of Delhi

In recognition of his services, the Government of India conferred the rank of the Marshal of the Air Force on Arjan Singh in January 2002 making him the first and only 'Five Star' rank officer in the Indian Air Force.

This was rather overdue as it was given to him only at the age of 83. If this had been

done earlier soon after his retirement his services would have enhanced the Indian Air Force in a more magnificent manner as a Marshal never retires. He is one such unsung hero who never got any award such as VSM, AVSM, PVSM, etc.

Question for May 2015: Who is the Maj Gen from Kapurthala State whose children, three sons, one daughter, son-in-law, two grandchildren all served in the Indian Army and brought laurels to the country?

The “Do youknow” column is contributed by Col NA Kumar (Retd)

IN CLEMENT DAYS

In my student days, I was introduced to PG Wodeshouse and of all the colourful cast of characters created by him, Jeeves was always my favourite. I did not know that in later years I was destined to meet a desi version of this 'gentleman's gentleman'. 63 years ago, on my very first squadron posting, I checked into the Officers Mess and shared the services of the room bearer with another bachelor officer. Clement, who was about my own age, was industrious, trustworthy and efficient. He not only looked after all our housekeeping needs and kept in safe custody our (very modest) salaries but in dire (financial) emergencies, even made a temporary loan to his young masters who were generally insolvent long before next pay day! He had some basic education, was a keen learner and had a flair for languages.

Our personal relationship bonded and, when my next posting came, I had no hesitation in agreeing to take him along. Clement thus entered my sole personal service and moved with me to various air bases all up north. On a short visit to my parents in Kolkata, he accompanied me as he had never seen that city. As our own family retainer was himself on leave at that time, my mother was delighted with his culinary skills of which I knew nothing. He even picked up a smattering of Bengali to add to his communicative skills in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English! Once, when I was briefly hospitalized in a remote Military Hospital and knew no one there, the matron surprised me by announcing a visitor. In walked a smartly dressed Clement, sporting one of my squadron ties and having ridden up on my motor cycle to visit me!

When I got married while serving at a desert air base, my more senior and experienced colleagues cautioned me that bachelor-days Jeeves never survived post-marriage. On the other hand my bride whose (then) sole culinary attributes comprised possession of a recipe book and a can opener, was more than relieved to have his experience in the kitchen and even suggested that we return the hospitality of my boss and his wife by asking them over for the very first meal

we ever hosted. Just before dinner was to be served, Clement walked in and in a loud vouce announced “Madam, fly has fallen in soup which resulted in great activity behind closed doors!” After serving dessert, he once again announced that 'there is no more French Toast' to prevent anyone requesting a refill! Our guests laughed heartily at Clement's demonstration of the triumph of Trust over Tact!

Our landlord who lived upstairs had a young Pahari maid who looked after his little daughters. Perhaps motivated by my change of martial status, Clement Fell madly in love with the young lady upstairs who apparently reciprocated his ardour. Despite opposition from both families (plus the landlord) we were supportive and happy to see this unique Malayali-Himachali union take place when such nuptials were rare. On our next posting up north however, Clement requested me for help to relocate south where he felt he could better his prospets. I was more than happy to assist him financially and, with the help of good friends, admit him into polytechnic down south for technical training.

Many years later I was in a staff car driving up to Wellington where I was postd when, at a traffic stop-light, a vaguely familiar face on a motor cycle pulled up, gestured to me and requested the driver to pull over. A very prosperous looking Clement (re)introduced himself and said he had been trying to catch up ever since he saw me emerge from Coimbatore airport. At the closest restaurant, we sat together and caught up with family news from both sides. He was now an Assistant Manager in a manufacturing company, had a son and daughter both of whom were in college and he added proudly that his wife and children were all trilingual! I doubt if the original Jeeves could have done any better!

IT CONCERNS US, DON'T IGNORE

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package... "What food might this contain?" The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning. "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the goat and told him "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The goat sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it. "

The mouse turned to the cow and said, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose. But wish you well; be assured you are in my prayers" So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap-- alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the goat. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.

So many people came for her funeral, the

farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, Remember that when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another because directly or indirectly we might have to suffer!!!

REDOING THE EARTHMy dream is to reach Mars, challenging all oddsMy dream is to make an Earth, with no bullets or swordsI want to redo the Earth, this time with careSo that to damage this Earth, no one would dare. We'll make this Earth be looked after, as a gift of GodWe'll make the people be loved, as children of LordI knew the day is very very far awayBut there will be this day, When on Mars we would stay. One day we'll find water on MarsOne day we'll live on this red starOne day here the human lives would embraceOne day the Earth will replace.
