The Minister made this observation during her opening remarks at the inaugural meeting of the Ministerial Implementation Committee on the National Economic Council Resolution on the Harmonization of Taxes and Levies across the federation. At the meeting which was held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja, Okonjo-Iweala stated that, “Multiple taxation is particularly harmful to the economy because it increases the cost of doing business coupled with the fact that the costs of administering these various taxes is neither beneficial to the government nor the private sector.” The Coordinating Minister of the Economy however, lauded FIRS in the area of revenue collection. She stated that, “Over the past 5 years, revenue collection has increased by an average of 26% per annum. It is my belief that the harmonization of taxes across the federation will yield equally beneficial results for revenue collection.” In his key note address, the Ag.ECFIRS, Kabir M. Mashi stressed that the quest for improved internally generated revenue from revenue authorities over the years is the reason for the wanton imposition of taxes and levies in different states. He explained that the government had tried in the past to harmonize and streamline all tax laws but this had yielded no fruits until the present administration constituted a National Economic Council ad-hoc Committee. The Secretary to the National Economic Council, Ntufam Fidel Ugbo, in his remarks explained that the constitution of the committee is predicated on the complaints of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. All the Chairmen of State Boards of Internal Revenue and some Commissioners of Finance were in attendance to give a robust debate on the document that is expected to be delivered to the President and the Federal Executive Council.

he atmosphere in the hall and the tone of speech captured the mood of the Ag. ECFIRS Kabir
M. Mashi and Management during the Field Operations Group (FOG) North Central Region TEnlarged Management Meeting. At the meeting, which was held recently at the A Class Park
in Abuja, the Ag.ECFIRS began his speech with a show of displeasure on the collection performance
of the Service when he said “This is not good enough, we need to do more to meet up with our
expenditure”.
Speaking on the backdrop of the report presented by the Coordinating Director, FOG, Bamidele
Ajayi, Mashi maintained that the union needs to sensitise staff on the need to improve on collection
performance. On the report which stated that the Service
has achieved a 78% collection in the oil sector and 106% in
the non-oil sector, Mashi explained that it will be wrong of
staff to ask for better welfare when there are no
corresponding efforts to improve collection performance.
The Ag.ECFIRS also gave a clarification on the rumours
making the round that the Service is recruiting staff. He
said, “Let us stop sending wrong information that we are
