Unity in Diversity in India (1)A keen penetrating insight will not fail to recognize the fundamental unity beneath the manifold variety in India. The diversity itself, far from being a damaging cause of disunity and weakness, is fertile source of strength and wealth. Sir Herbert Risely has rightly observed. “ Beneath the manifold diversity of physical and social types, languages. Customs and religions which strike the observer in India, there can still be discerned a certain underlying uniformity of life from the Himalayas to cape comorin.” From his long and first – hand experience in India, Vincent A. Smith says that civilization of India has many features which differentiate it from that of the other regions of the world, while they are common to the whole country in degree sufficient to justify its treatment as a unity in the history of human, social and intellectual development. To make good notes means to make notes which will useful later on. So you must proceed systematically. In making notes from a lecture, youought to know for what purpose you are making notes. This will help you to decide how much has to be included and how much can be left out. The presentation by the lecture is also important; if the lecture is not properly organized or confused and vague, you cannot take notes from it. When you make notes from an easy or an article or a chapter from a book, the first step is to read the passage thoroughly, from the beginning to the end, to get a ‘birds’ – eye view of it. This kind of reading is called ‘skimming’. By skimming the passage we get answer to the following questions: i)What does the passage deal with? Can we suggest a title for it? ii) How does the author develop the theme? Tjis leads us to second step that is to find the chief divisions of the passage and supply suitable headings for them. Here is an example. (4) [Q12] Reading the following passage and prepare notes in a print wise way. There are many different kinds of musical instruments. They are divided into three main classes according to the way that they are played. For example some instruments are played by blowing air into them. They are called wind instruments. In some of these the air is made to vibrate inside a woodenterbia and these are said to be of the wood wind family. Examples of wood wind instruments are flute. The clarinet and the bassoon. Other instruments are made of brass: the trumpet and the horn. For example there are also various other wind instruments such as mouth organ and the bag pipes. // some instruments like this are called percussioninstruments. The last big group of musical instrumentsare the ones which have strings. There are two main kinds of stringed instruments; those in which the music made by plucking the strings, and those where the player draws a bow across the strings. Examples of
the former are the harp and the Guitar. Examples of the latter are the violin and the cello. Ans:-Musical Instruments 1.Wind Instruments: (played by blowing air into them) (a)wood wind (i) flute (ii) clarinet (iii”) Bassoon (b) Brass (i) trumpet (ii) Horn (iii) Others (c) Others (i) Mouth organ (ii) Bag pipe 2. Percussion instruments: (played by banging or striking) Eg: drum 3.Stringed instruments: (a) Played by plucking (i) harp (ii) Guitar (b) played with a bow (i) violin (ii) cello. Note: steps involved in note making are as follows. I II A B 1 2 3 4 III A B C IV
Indicators: I, II, III, IV etc large Roman numeral (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) etc → small Roman numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc → Arabic numerals A, B, C, D, etc → capital le ers A, b, c, d etc → small le ers (o en in brackets) (5) Look at the passage below. Arrange it in note form, using headings, numbering etc. ACQUIRING INFORMATION. What are the ways in which a student can acquire information? But fatal incidents are taking place due to rash driving by teenagers. It has been a common practice for many students to listen to the music and speaking to someone on mobile phone vehicle driving which compounds the risk of road accidents. Many in recent past, the number of bike accidents has increased enormously. Students try to exhibit their heroism with stunts on the roads without knowing the later impacts of it. But they should understand the depressed condition of the parents who have lost their children in situations like those.
People see boards put upon roads like speed thrills but kills. The government should take necessary steps to take awareness among teenagers on ill – effects of careless driving. College managements should enforce strict rules asking students to commute only in RTC or college buses. They made trousers and coat. They asked the king to put on the new clothes. Even though he saw nothing, he feared that it will reveal his foolishness. So he walked along in the procession. Read the following passage carefully (1) We know how light is usually produced. It is made by burning things we burn wax in a candle, oil in a lamp and electricity in an electric bulb .But these things - candles and lamps - give out not only light but also a large amount of heat. There are some living things which can give out light without any heat at all. There are a large number of such living things .of these, fireflies and glow - warms are known to most to us. The light given out by these insects is cold because it is not made by burning anything. If it was the insect would get burnt up themselves. These lights are produced by the chemical changes in their bodies. A fresh scientist named Dubois found out that the glow - warm gave out a glow because of a chemical. He called it ‘Luciferin’. Later he found out that the Lucifer in by itself cannot give out light. It must act with another chemical, which he called ‘Luciferase’. But soon it was found that all glowing insects do not have the same chemicals. In short , we still do not know exactly how a glow warm glows ! A glow- warm really is a small beetle. The female glow- warm does not have wings. She cannot fly. She is the one that carries the small light and give the night such beauty. We know why these insects produce their cold light. The glow warm wants the male beetle to see her, from her light the male knows where she is, Fireflies also use their lights for the same reason . Some fishes use a glow to get their food, The squid , a creature which lives in the sea , use its glow to save itself from larger fish . They are the most deadly of all natural calamities. Two of the greatest earthquakes occurred in China and Alaska. How do earthquakes occur? They are caused by the shifting of rocks along cracks in the earth’s crust. The cracks are produced when rocks near each other are pulled in different directions. Some nations are actively involved in earthquake prediction. They have setup seismic Networksin areas of their countries where earthquakes are known to occur. The networks give advance signals. Seismograph can detect vibrations in layers of the
earth. Tilt meters (tilt meters) are used to measure surface tilt along crust line. Whatever technological development there is, it is still in its infancy.
