It’s 10 In Kino: Places: Tiburón Island Tiburón Island, or "Socaix" in Seri, is not just the largest island in Mexico; it is

history, legend, world heritage, home to hundreds of species and a living witness.

The island is named after the giant sharks that, according to testimonies of explorers,

prowled its shores.

Tiburón Island, now an ecological reserve, is more than 1.208 km2 and was once home of

the Seri tribe. The island has mountains, deserts, beaches, rivers, mangroves and caves.

One of these caves is "the cave of power" and according to the Seris, to reach this cave

it takes a 3 day walk and fasting. Upon entering the cave of power, it will grant any wish

to those who have endured the pilgrimage.

Another Seri legend tells the story of a giant who inhabited the island for thousands of

years but was defeated by a member of the tribe playing a game of reeds which the Seri

men still practice.

The island is home to 298 plant species, 96 of which have not been found on any other

island in the Gulf of California. This majestic giant is also home to:

39 species of reptiles

10 species of marine mammals

178 bird species

209 species of insects

52 species of terrestrial mammals one of which is the great “Cimarrón”, desert bighorn sheep which was introduced to the island in 1975.

There were several expeditions to the island but it never revealed all its secrets. Since

the arrival of the Spanish explorers in the area, the stunning island caused the admi-

ration of the conquerors, whether military or missionaries. The same sensation still

overwhelms anybody who views it for the first time either from the beaches of Kino

or a trip to it.

The most Mexican day of all, the “Día del Grito” (or cry of inde-

pendence) was lived with great taste, great heartfelt pride and a lot of

dancing in Kino Bay.

From the youngest to high school students, everyone came out

with their costumes to celebrate in the public square as usual. Familias

Unidas and other groups and families filled the space around the kiosk

with carne asada, pozole and other Mexican dishes, and of course, one or

two Sonoran hot-dog carts.

It was a night of raffles for food bags and one for an AC, traditional

dances, music by DJ Nieto, Kino Bay divers who took the microphone to

thank the ecology clubs and all those who supported their adventure in

Iniciativa Mexico. They surprised us with news of possible resources com-

ing to their Island Monitor group soon.

Before midnight, finally, as one large Mexican family, and of course,

our foreign friends, united in one voice we sounded off the cry of

the great warrior people: ¡VIVA MEXICO!

Kino In September

This photo allows you to see the many sights and colors of Kino Bay. Thanks to Claudette Panico for capturing and sharing

this photo. 1st place winner of the Facebook digital photo contest for the month of September.. Victor Terreros was the

winner of the 2nd place with this picture of his ride down the the "Chichichora" cannyon and Betty Martinez won the 3rd

place with this image taken at the Cactus Park located a few miles before entering Kino. Without discussing it, the 3 win-

ners were more drawn to the desert side of Kino Bay rather than the beach side. Evidence that Kino has something for

every one. A unique place in a thousand and one ways. ! Congratulations to all!

A gray-haired man enters his car ready to return to Hermo-

sillo after a long weekend. He walks away with a big smile on his

face and a thousand dollars in his pocket. Who would have thought

that this was the same man who came to BK on Friday night and luc-

kily found the tourist office open later than usual. If I had arrived

five minutes later, may not be going home a thousand dollars richer

today.

His name is Marcelino Perez, a car electrictician who spent the last

two days getting up early in the morning and fishing on the banks of

beautiful Santa Rosa Estuary at the International Corvina Fishing

Tournament... (November 2010 by Betty Martínez)

Marcelino Perez won the 1st place prize of the 2010

International Corvina Fishing Tournament with his 6 lb, 5 oz

corvina. Other winners were Julian Cota won $ 600 for se-

cond prize and $ 400 USD for Alonso Noriega, who came in

3rd place. (5 lb 4 oz)

The origianl tournament was created in 2000 but ceased to

be held in 2006. The Kino Bay Non-Profit Tourism Associa-

tion, El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. (The Awakening of a

Riviera) along with the Kino Bay City Council organized the

rebirth of this tournament that became the final event of

KINOFEST 2010, the festivities that celebrate the natural be-

auty and splendor of Bahía de Kino.

Seri tribe representatives were present throughout

the tournament, giving the estuary the magic it conveys.

The president and members of the Kino Bay Club Deportivo

also played a crucial role in making this tournament hap-

pen by helping with transportation for fishermen and hos-

ting the awards ceremony.

Preparations for the International Fishing Tourna-

ment 2011 Corvina are in their final stage. Major changes

were made to the rules and prizes, let’s just say that this

year the winner will go home richer tan Marcelino did last

year.

You can see the full rules & maps for this 2011 tour-

nament on Kino Bay’s official website:

www.bahiadekino.com.mx in both languages. The 2010

Tournament DVD is available now and features highlights of

the event and the environment that occurred during both

days in the estuary and the awards ceremony.

We invite not only our fellow Mexicans, but also our Kinoi-

tes at heart to remain part of this tradition.

Let's go fishing from November 11th to the 13th.

Adiós “Paco”

The Director General of the Bureau of Conventions and Visitors Bureau (OCV) of Hermosillo, a co-

lleague, an ally anda a Kino Bay lover says goodbye. Lic. Francisco García Karam decided to take a new

direction and new challenges. "Paco" as he is better known, left office on September 27 this year.

In a letter to all his colleagues and friends he stated: "... I will leave the Bureau. It was a very difficult

decision, but an opportunity presented to me and I can not afford to pass it up…… I did not want to

miss this opportunity to thank all of you for the work, your dedication, friendship and all the support

we received in each and every one of the projects that we brought to your door. I'm very happy, very

proud of what we accomplished with all of you: private enterprises, government and tourist asocia-

tions ... I'm convinced that there is still much to do ... I thank you for everything you taught me

(which) will help me undertake this new challenge. "

Paco was a very outstanding fellow. His refreshing ideas and his ability to discuss and develop new

ones with his colleages and, above all, his personal love for Kino Bay made it possible to reach some of

the dreams of the members of our association, El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. and of the entire

community of Bahía de Kino.

Paco was a crucial element in achieving the filming and production of the

official promotional video of Kino Bay, which was filmed on the same day

that he left his office at the OCV.

Wherever he goes and whatever position he plays, we know that a bit

of Paco’s heart stays in Kino Bay forever.

Thank you for all your support and words of encouragement Paco, we

wish you the best of the best.

Green Alliance The members of the Kino Bay ecology clubs, the coordinator of the environmental program of Prescott College,

Marlu Robledo and the Executive Coordinator of El Despertar de una Riviera, A.C. Mr. Carlos Cumming met to discuss ways

to form an alliance.

Expressing our desire to support the activities and reward the dedication of these youngsters, Carlos Cumming, on

behalf of the Corvina Fishing Tournament’s Organizing Committee, requested the participation of 15 club members to act

as area as inspectors on both days of the tournament. These inspectors will be in charge of ensuring that rules are being

followed, ei.: no use bait, not entering the water and that the captured piece meets the minimum size.

As a token of appreciation and encouragement to continue their ecological principles, the Organizing Committee

will donate 15% of the profits on sale of tournament tickets to the clubs. With this money they will advance or begin an

environmental project that will benefit the entire community. The clubs will present the project for which they plan to

use the money later this month.

Let’s support the ecology clubs by participating in the Corvina Fishing Tournament. The more ticket sales, the bigger the

donation!

This little Paradise has a very promising future. The coordinator of the Tourism Development Com-

mission, Javier Tapia Camou said "The coming construction of new roads and the new pier for yachts will

give this place a great potential for development in the coming years."

After the completion of the work of the first stage of the Sea of Cortez Boulevard Estela beach, the second

stage is about to begin: paving New Kino’s back road. This will aid the traffic during the busy periods and

allow easier boat & trailer transporting.

Also in the plans is the coastal road, which currently reaches Puerto Libertad and will in the future be con-

nected to Kino Bay’s main boulevard. Another work that is expected begin during the first quarter of 2012.

is the long-awaited marina.

El despertar de una Riviera, A.C. joins the community in the profound grief for the loss of

Dr. Alfredo Campaña Torres Husband, Father, Coleage & Friend.

On August 20th Dr. Alfredo Campaign Torres passed away leaving a young wife and three

little ones. Transitioning form the "Aquarium fo the World" to the aquarium of the universe from

which we will surely watch over us with love.

Dr. Alfredo was a graduate of FACIMAR, 1990-1995 generation and professor-researcher at the Depart-

ment of Scientific and Technological Research of the University of Sonora. He had recently completed

a Doctorate of Science in Biological Research Center of the Northwest (CIBNOR).

Dr. Alfredo Torres was a relentless nature & ecology activist and a member of our Non-Profit Organi-

zation El Despertar de Una Riviera because of his desire and efforts to transform Kino Bay.

One of his closest dreams was an Aquarium for Kino Bay.

Dr. Alfredo was also part of our “K-Pasa BK” with his monthly article

"Did you know that in Kino Bay ... .." in which he spoke of the uniqueness

and importance of Kino Bay for natural , ecological

and historical reasons.

This is a very big loss for our entire community.

Our deepest condolences to his wife, his little ones and his family.

Alfredo, dear friend, we will miss you.
