Friends, family, grandparents and churches of LHS seniors can donate to the “Wall of Honor” in the name of their special graduate. Every senior will have a sign with their name on it displayed in the “Wall of Honor” room at the Project Celebration event. Leadership Lines

As I mentioned at the February meeting, Michelle Briley, Susan Belasco, Cindy Neal and I attended AJLI’s Winter Conference in

Houston at the end of January. We kicked off the conference Thursday evening with an opening reception and tour of the Junior

League of Houston. What an amazing facility! The things these women accomplish each year and the money they raise are awe-inspiring. But so are we! We might be small compared to their numbers, but we are mighty. We were able to visit with women from other Leagues of all sizes, and that first evening our conversation was dominated with talks of Fun Runs and 5Ks – what works, what doesn’t, what have you learned. Friday and Saturday mirrored each other with early mornings, interesting sessions and intriguing keynote speakers. We attended sessions on governance, social and cultural inclusion, deliberating differently and servant leadership to name a few. Thank you so much for allowing us to represent you and our organization at the conference! Over lunch on Saturday, I had the opportunity to brag on you guys and what we do. Members of several Leagues from all over the country were taking notes about our backpack and school supply drive that has become the Back to School Bonanza and about our partnership with Prevent Blindness that has become Vision Screening. These women were so amazed, and I was so proud.AJLI is continuing its theme of Transformation that was

unveiled last spring. The theme is so apropos for the four of us who attended the conference…and for our League as a whole. The two-day conference (jam-packed days, I might add!) was transforming for us – we learned so much about AJLI, but more importantly, we learned so much about ourselves as women and as civic leaders within the League and in the community we serve. Our League is entering a new era – a year without the fundraiser that has been a signature of our organization for 36 years. We are transforming to meet the needs of our community. I applaud your courage to consider new ideas, to implement new projects and to support new fundraisers. I thank you for your dedication in continuing to transform the lives of women and children of our community. I am excited to be a part of this Transformation with each and every one of you!

Lora HuertaOur February Volunteer of the Month is an active member of the community and is very involved with her family and friends. Lora Huerta is someone who lives what she believes and she truly believes it is her role and responsibility to give back to this world, without wanting any credit or recognition. Aside from her job as a Sales Executive, she is also an active member of St. Patrick’s Church. She enjoys traveling with her husband…specifically to wineries, hanging out with family and friends and enjoys reading. Her son is the light of her world and her family is a great example of what a family should be. Her friends adore her and love that she is an inspiration to all. Her husband is so in love with her and with him by her side, they exude goodness, love and kindness and bless those they come into contact with. She is in charge of course safety for the Fun Run and has worked hard over the last few months obtaining a permit from the city and getting volunteers set up on the course so that we will have a safe run. She is always willing to help out when needed. We appreciate you, Renée Robertson, and you deserve a Pat on the Back!

Spring Market

Every time I see the words “Live. Laugh. Love,” it reminds me of how fabulous our market is going

to be. Am I jumping the gun? I don’t believe so. The committee has been working on ways to increase attendance and to get the word out. As mentioned

at last month’s meeting, we must get the community to come and support our fundraisers and not just League members. If you ordered shirts last month, then they will be passed out at the March meeting. Another design on a purple shirt has been made for those who want ‘less bling.’ An email will be sent out for anyone who would like to order one. I also heard from several members

about their sub-committees, so shift sign ups will be at the next meeting too. Members, I encourage everyone to sell over their $50 requirement in tickets. Not just because you could win the Louis Vuitton handbag, but to support one of the League’s fundraisers. Remember that money raised goes back into the community by way of scholarships to area high school seniors, league projects such as Camp Get Fit and Vision Screening and other non-profitorganizations like C.A.S.A. and The Pregnancy Help Center. So make plans to come shop, shop, and shop some more April 19-21st. GodBless!

Spring Fun Run

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Crown Colony Country

Club. The 1 Mile Kids Run (Children ages 5 – 12 years) will start at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K run will start at 8:30 a.m. Ages for the 5K race range in age from

10 years to 80 plus! Walkers are welcome! Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division. Best Buy will be donating IPod Nanos for the top male/female finisher for the 5K race and $50.00 gift cards for the top boy/girl finisher in the 1 Mile Kids Run. MVP

The MVP volunteers are still going strong. We had a group of volunteers go to the Angelina County Senior

Citizen’s Center to sort items for soldiers. This is a program sponsored by the American Legion. The students got to sort items, bag them, and then pack the boxes

that are sent to the soldiers. This is such a rewarding experience. The volunteers also learned a little about the American Legion and all of the hard work they do in order to make this project successful. The volunteers also had a visitor, who served our great country, stop by and tell a few stories about his time in the military and how important it was for them to receive boxes of supplies. Such a wonderful experience! In the month of February, the MVP volunteers assisted Diana Hineman with setting up the Lufkin Middle School Library Book Fair. They assisted on two separate days. The first day they set up the book fair and displayed all of the books, and the other evening they assisted with the LMS Family Night

Book Fair. These kids have been so generous with their time. Again, I am so proud of them and their dedication to this organization and to the community! Way to go MVP Friends!

Provisional Update

I know I said this previously, but, wow, we’ve learned so much about the League already this year!

Our Done In a Day Project was completed in November when we chose Lufkin Community Partners and the Rainbow Room as our project. We donated money and purchased food items for

Thanksgiving food baskets that went to needy families from Angelina County that are working with Child Protective Services. We then attended the November Lufkin Community Partners board meeting and helped assemble thirty Thanksgiving food baskets that were distributed to the families. It was such a blessing to participate in this and to know that we were helping children and families in Angelina County. On New Year’s Day we participated in the clean up collaboration from the New Year’s Eve In the City event. We were able to have a lot of group bonding and worked together to get that knocked out and completed quickly. It looked like everyone that attended had a fabulous time! Our Provisional Training Meeting with the Board is quickly approaching on Saturday, February 25th. We are looking forward to hearing from each council/board member and learning about their parts of the Junior League of Lufkin and what we have to look forward to in the future. We are already in high gear selling Spring Market tickets

and gearing up to help make Spring Market a successful event. Following the Spring Market, we are excited to begin work on the Second Annual Back to School Bonanza. What an amazing experience it was to be a part of that last year and we’re anticipating that this year’s event will be even better. And last, but certainly not least, we are very excited about preparing for the skit to honor the new sustainers! It should be exciting at the very least! The 2012 Provisional Class is committed to the success of the Junior League of Lufkin and look forward to many rewarding years to come!

1. I am a Registered Nurse, mom and wife. My husband and I take our 2 kids running with us and we go to the zoo as a family every weekend. I am a graduate of SFA and I bet you didn’t know that I was on the water ski team!

2. I am an adult probation officer in Angelina County. I am married to the love of my life and we have an adorable little boy. We are avid hunters and love the outdoors. I am very outgoing and love working with kids. I bet you didn’t know that I wanted to be an attorney when I grew up!

3. I am a super active mom of 2. I have been a crisis worker for the Burke Center for the past several years. I am a graduate of SFA with a BS in Rehab. I love to have a good time and I bet you didn’t know that I can make a great monkey call!

4. I am wife, mom and currently the District Director for State Representative James White. I have a BS and MA in Criminology and Corrections from Sam Houston. I volunteer in my spare time as a CASA advocate, with the Boys & Girls Club and at my church. I bet you didn’t know that I wanted to be a lawyer growing up!

5. I am a local attorney, wife and mother to a precious new baby boy. I graduated from Texas A&M and obtained my JD from South Texas College of Law. I am a board member for Angelina Beautiful Clean in my spare time. I bet you didn’t know that you should never ask me to help with arts & crafts… it is just not my talent!

6. I am an ICU Nurse originally from Florida. I am married to Tommy and have 2 adult children. My husband and I recently became Lolly and Pop to our beautiful new grandson. Our family loves to go boating and I bet you didn’t know that I get up at 3 a.m. to run!

7. I am a true animal lover. I teach in Corrigan but am looking for something closer to home. I have a Masters in Agriculture from SFA and love to fish. I bet you didn’t know that I have the quirky habit of color coding my closet!

8. I am a stay at home mom and am a ACSM Certified personal trainer. I love relaxing on the beach or hanging out at the ranch. Growing up I wanted to be a Vet or a Nurse. I bet you didn’t know that I majored in Community Health and had not one, but two minors in Biology and Nutrition!

9. I am wife, mom and an occupational therapist who is part of a team that is in involved in testing students for autism spectrum disorders. Our family loves to boat, fish and go swimming. I bet you didn’t know that you should never ask me to plan a large event because it totally stresses me out!

10. I teach at both LMS (Language Arts) and Angelina College (Developmental Writing) in addition to being a wife and mom. I love getting together and just sitting down to a good home cooked meal. I bet you didn’t know that I am on a dance team at my church!

Focus on the Community

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas provides prevention, intervention and counseling services to children, adolescents and

adults in Angelina County. Preventing the devastation of chemical dependency before it starts is key to the mission of our agency. The old addage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” holds true today as we strive to prevent alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug abuse in our children and adolescent in order to not have to treat them for addiction later in life. The cost of prevention provided by ADAC on a daily basis equals an average cost of a glass of tea or soda. The cost of treatment services is significantly more when helping an addicted person find recovery. Education through prevention saves lives. Programs such as fire safety and seat belt safety are life saving services, and  these prevention activities save lives. The same life saving prevention message must be shared with children, adolescents, and parents concerning drug abuse. Prevention of drug abuse must start at an early age and continue as children grow and face challenges on how to handle this issue as they mature. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council provides prevention education throughout Angelina County through education activities, including classroom presentations, activity sheets with a message and Leo the Lion Puppet Extravaganza Prevention Show and much more. These activities are designed to keep the prevention message that drugs are harmful at the forefront of young people’s mind and help them on healthy and productive

decision making. ADAC’s partnership with the Junior League of Lufkin through grant funding allows us to get the message in the hands of children in our community and to allow them to have fun while they are learning. The Leo the Lion Activity sheet with colors has allowed children to learn a prevention message while participating in activities. Drug abuse prevention material is purchased to send specific messages to children and adolescents through funding from Junior League. The Junior League of Lufkin gives ADAC a helping hand in prevention to provide the critical “ounce of prevention” that is life saving to our children and makes our community a great place to grow.

Motivational Minute

Mother Teresa said, “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength

lies.” I love this quote because it both challenges and comforts me all at once.

It challenges me to take the small things in my life seriously. For most of us, the opportunity to make a giant,

heroic impact on society will rarely, if ever, present itself. However, each day we are granted the ability to improve the lives of those around us. We know that small gestures often have big results. A kind word delivered at the right moment can turn one’s day around. When we find ways to combine our small gestures, we can have a tremendous impact on our community at large. The Junior League’s Back to School Bonanza is an excellent example of small gestures coming together for a larger cause. There are hair stylists, nurses, dentists, vision screeners, and church and league volunteers. These are some of the more visible volunteers, but what about the volunteers who set up the tables, who prepare food for the

other volunteers, the workers who set up the dividers, the housekeeping? They may not come in direct contact with a child, but their actions are no less helpful in pulling this event together, and in the end, helping to supply children with much needed back to school supplies and services. You never know what influence even your smallest actions can have. In writing this, I am reminded of Luke 16:10 which says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Now, please don’t get me wrong, I have not always been faithful or trustworthy with the small things. I have grumped my way through more days than I care to admit to. My hope is that each day will bring with it new opportunities to try again. I am blessed to be surrounded by strong, kind women who I have witnessed being faithful in many small and large things throughout our community. May God bless you all and those that you serve.

on your calendar. Barbara Hill and An Sweeny welcome the arrival of Ella Caroline Hill, born to Jennifer and Chris Hill of Colleyville on January 18. Charlotte and Price are her sister and brother. Julie Castleberry is enjoying her newest grandchild. Peter John Hennessey V. is 4 months old. His parents are Claire and Peter Hennessey of San Antonio. John’s sister, Julianne, is 3 1/2 years old. Cooper, Julie and the rest of the family will be celebrating with their son, Trey, as he receives his Aggie ring on March 30th. A huge welcome to Kelli Wayland who is back in Lufkin and at work after spending 6 months recuperating. By the time you are reading this, she will have spent a great weekend with all of the grandchildren here in Lufkin to celebrate her recovery and all of the family events that she missed while ill. If you are a Lumberjack basketball fan, you may have seen Susan Simpson’s grandsons helping the players on the court. Jackson and Pierce Parks are the sons of Susan’s daughter, Emily. As Ball Boys for the SFA Basketball team, they are the helpers for the pre-game warm up and whatever else needs to be done. These two boys have had a basketball in their hands since they were born!

Carol Moore is tutoring in the English as a Second Language Program at The Mosaic Center. She is inspired by the dedication of the women from other countries, who are working hard to learn the English language, in addition to job and family responsibilities. Erica Callaham recruited Carol. If you are interested in helping out, please call Carol or Erica. Joie Henderson vacationed in Cabo San Lucas in January and has a trip planned with friends to Croatia, Italy and Slovenia in March. Joie’s daughter, Honey, is expecting her second son, Harrison House Rothermel, on March 14. Sissy (Virginia) Henderson is building a house on South Chestnut. Holly just returned from Africa. Jetta Westerholm and Len Medford have been welcomed into the Anthony Smith Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution. The DAR is a women’s organization comprised of descendents of individuals who aided in achieving American independence. Many thanks to all who shared stories this month and please keep the news coming! I know that you are all starting to smile as the world begins to turn green and full of blooms again.
