Whether I’m in the audience or performing onstage, musical theater makes me so happy. When my family moved to Portland a year ago, I learned about OCT and signed up for a couple of workshops. It was so good to find a space where I could be comfortable expressing myself. In the meantime, I met some wonderful students, learned new acting techniques, sang fun ensemble numbers, and felt my confidence soar.

Luckily, the workshops at OCT end in a little showcase for our friends and family. Thank goodness, because I sure do like an audience! As I was heading out the door, a man stopped me and said, “Hey you! You should audition for OCT this summer.” My first thought was, “Who are you?” My second thought was, “Where do I sign up?” It turns out that man was Stan Foote, Artistic Director of OCT.

So I auditioned. Would you believe me if I said I strutted into the audition room, blew everyone away, and was offered the role on the spot? I wouldn’t either. The truth is, for me, auditions mean a lot of work and preparation. For weeks on end, you would find me singing nonstop. You could also catch me reciting my audition monologue over and over to anyone who would listen—basically to my reflection in the mirror. No amount of preparation helps

with the nerves. So I didn’t strut, I quivered. And I auditioned even with the butterflies raging in my stomach.

I got called back for a second round of auditions along with a group of the most talented kids I’ve ever encountered. So being offered the role of Junie B. was a huge surprise! I’m so excited to be playing this character whom I have known since I was a 1st grader. The Junie B. Jones books have always made me laugh out loud! But the best thing about being part of this production is getting to work with an amazing creative team and a cast of wonderful actors who bring so much humor and energy to the story.

And thanks to Stan Foote! I don’t know if he remembers telling me to audition but I can say that he most definitely changed the course of my year.

KAYLEE BAIR (Grace/Junie Understudy)Kaylee is very excited to be in OCT’s production

of Junie B. Jones! She is a sophomore at Tigard High School and enjoys choir and math. Kaylee is in OCT’s Young Professionals program and was recently in Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid at NWCT. She loves chocolate and dancing and believes that everyone can make their dreams come true. Special thanks to her parents, who are patient, kind, and wise. Enjoy the show!

LAUREN BURTON (Bobbie Jean Piper)Lauren is thrilled to make her OCT debut with Junie B. Jones.

This year marks her first year as an OCT Young Professional. She has previously appeared in NWCT’s The Jungle Book and as a lost boy in their production of Peter Pan. Through Young People’s Theater Project Lauren was also recently seen in Big Fish. As a sophomore at Jesuit High School she enjoys playing softball and soccer.

SKYLAR DERTHICK(Sheldon/Chenille)Skylar is extremely excited to be in his first production with OCT.

You may have seen him in NWCT’s Peter Pan as Michael Darling. He has done several productions with Journey Theater. One of his favorite roles was in Aladdin as Iago. When he’s not busy acting you can find him behind the camera, writing, or singing. He would like to thank his family and friends for their years of continued support. He hopes that you’ll have a great time and enjoy the show!

LIZ GHIZ (Mother/May)Liz hails from Hood River, Oregon. In 2005, Liz graduated from the

American Academy of Dramatic Arts and is deeply pleased to say that yes, you can make a living as an artist! Portland has become Liz’s home and she is thankful for all the new friends she is meeting through her crazy theatrical endeavors. “If music be the food of love, play on.”

CLAYTON LUKENS(Herb/Camille)Clayton is a 13-year-old 8th grader at Liberty Middle School. He has

been involved in musical theater for the past five years, and is excited to be in his first OCT production. He has previously been seen as Charlie in Willy Wonka and as John in Peter Pan (both with Journey Theater). He would like to thank his friends and family (especially his Mom) for all of their support. Enjoy the show!

GRACE PROSCHOLD (Lucille)Grace is absolutely ecstatic to be involved in OCT’s production

of Junie B. Jones. Grace recently moved to Beaverton, Oregon from Sonoma County, California, and is now happily attending Southridge High School. She has 5 years of vocal training under her belt, as well as 7 years of acting coaching. One of her favorite experiences was performing in Henry V at Interlochen Arts Academy last summer, and The Little Princess the year before. Some of her favorite roles have been Gertrude (Seussical), Gollum (The Hobbit), and Ti Moune (Once on This Island).

JOE THEISSEN (Daddy/Mr. Scary/Mrs. Gutzman/Mr. Woo)Joe is excited to be

making his OCT debut in Junie B. Jones. In addition to performing,

Joe is a highly-regarded director, musician, and educator. Some recent acting credits include Thoroughly Modern Mille (Broadway Rose), La Cage Aux Folles (Lakewood & Pixie Dust Productions), The Music Man (Broadway Rose), [title of show] (Triangle), Beauty & the Beast (Pixie Dust), and It’s A Wonderful Life (Stumptown Stages). Joe has been honored with OTAS, PAMTA, and Drammy awards for his work as a performer and director. As an educator, Joe has been a fixture in the Lake Oswego community over the past decade, developing arts curriculum and programs in the schools.

KAI TOMIZAWA (Junie B. Jones)Kai is overjoyed to make her mainstage debut as Junie B. She has been

involved in musical theater since the age of four, and her earliest shows were The Sound of Music and Annie. She most recently performed the role of Olive Ostrovsky in Spelling Bee. When not singing or acting, you will most likely see Kai riding her unicycle, making short films with her family or practicing with her rock band, Poke A Dot. She currently attends 7th grade at Beaumont Middle School. Kai sends a heartfelt thanks to her friends and family, and especially her sister Mika, for their love and support.

ISMAEL SAMUEL TORRES(Jose)Ismael attends Woodburn High School

where he is currently a freshman.He has been in the Woodburn school district for 5 years now. Some of his interests include playing soccer, acting, and playing video games. This is his first show with OCT and actually his first show in general! Outside of school he usually hangs out with friends or helps his mother take care of his little brother and sister.


CAST & CREATIVE TEAMDAVID VANDYKE (Lennie)David is a 15-year-old freshman at Hillsboro High School and a first

year OCT Young Professional. He is happy to return to OCT after previously performing in Ivy + Bean as Leo. He has also been fortunate enough to perform with STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy and Theatre in the Grove. Though theater is his main hobby, he particularly enjoys spending his time reading and writing as well as creating awesome adventures with his brother. He would like to thank Isaac Lamb and Mont Chris Hubbard for this opportunity, and his family and friends for all of their support.

ISAAC LAMB (Director)Isaac is a directing graduate of Loyola Marymount University’s

School of Film and Television and a proud company member of Third Rail Repertory Theatre. His directing projects have included Drammy-winning productions of Grounded (CoHo Productions), Mother Teresa is Dead (Portland Playhouse), and Sweet Charity (Lakewood Theatre), as well as the Drammy-nominated Band Geeks (Broadway Rose) and Ivy + Bean (OCT). He’s thrilled to be directing again at OCT as well as at Broadway Rose, where he’s directing Adrift in Macao this fall. Isaac is also an actor, educator, and a renowned creator of viral video content with over 30 million views worldwide.

STAN FOOTE (OCT Artistic Director)Stan has worked for OCT for 20 years and has been

the Artistic Director since the 2001-2002 season. Stan is a Drammy and PAMTA award-winning director. His production of Kiss of the Spider Woman, originally produced by Miracle Theatre and remounted for

Borderlands Theater in Tucson, was named the Outstanding Drama of the 2002–2003 Tucson season. Stan has served on the Board of Directors for Theatre for Young Audiences/USA. His passion for creating new works has led to directing staged readings at the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices Festival and NYU’s New Plays for Young Audiences. He had the privilege of working with two Newbery Award-winning authors—Lois Lowry and Louis Sachar—to adapt their novels for OCT’s stages. In addition, Stan’s direction and guidance was instrumental in bringing Eric Coble’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s The Giver to audiences in Portland and around the country.Stan loves teaching and mentoring young people in our community. He is grateful to work with a brilliant staff, an amazing board, and the incredible theater artists in Portland, Oregon.

MONT CHRIS HUBBARD(Musical Director)Mont Chris is a performer, composer, and music director. He has released three CDs of solo piano improvisations, he is the creator and host of Portland’s most endearingly-strange variety show (The Mont Chris Hubbard Bonus Show), and he hosts an occasional late night piano bar around town. LARRY LARSEN(Scenic Designer)Larry has been designing shows professionally in Portland for the last 28 years and is excited to be designing for OCT for the first time. Recent scenic design work includes Adrift in Macao (Broadway Rose Theatre) and this past summer’s production of HMS Pinafore (Mock’s Crest Productions), for which he is also the Producing Artistic Director. Last year’s designs included a new opera for Anima Mundi productions, The Canticle of the Black Madonna,

and Keep Magic (Portland Revels), where he has been the resident set designer since 2001. Larry has also designed for Artists Repertory Theatre, Third Rail Repertory Theatre, Theatre Vertigo, Portland Repertory Theatre, Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company, NWCT, Summer Repertory Theatre in Santa Rosa, Portland Actor’s Conservatory, Portland Civic Theatre, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival/Portland, where he was the Design Associate for 6 seasons. Larry is the Chair of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts at the University of Portland.

PHIL MCBETH (Lighting Designer)Phil is always happy to be back with OCT. He is currently the technical director of Broadway Rose. He has been designing lighting for years at BRTC, including such shows as Bikinis, Who Done It, Christmas Survival Guide, and Grease. Musical theater and dance have always been a passion of his and he joined Broadway Rose a year ago and has found a real family there. Phil started his career at Sam Barlow High School and attended college at Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle. Upon his return to Oregon he served as the technical director of Majestic Theatre in Corvallis. He has also worked with the Hult Center Resident Dance Company, Dance West, Stumptown Stages, and Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre. Phil recently married the love of his life and currently lives in Salem.

ASHTON HULL (Costume Designer)Ashton is fascinated by the art(s) of storytelling. A hundred trips to Disneyland led her directly (paradoxically?) to the hallowed halls of Carnegie Mellon University and the study of creating complete worlds. She graduated in 2007 with a BFA: next stop LA. Los Angeles took her into the worlds of television (Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) and feature film production

(My Sister’s Keeper). In 2009, she returned to her rich and verdant Northwest roots and began freelance collaborations with local Portland theaters. Today her freelance work continues to grow, and Ashton also manages the Costume Shop for the Lewis and Clark College Theatre Department.

AMY BETH FRANKEL (Choreographer)Amy is thrilled return to OCT, having choreographed Ivy + Bean just last season. Amy has choreographed numerous shows in the Portland area including Candide (Portland Opera); Grey Gardens, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and A Christmas Carol (Portland Center Stage); A Chorus Line and The King and I (Broadway Rose); and Beauty and the Beast (Pixie Dust Productions). Amy has won Portland Drammy Awards for her outstanding performances in 42nd Street, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The Pain and the Itch. She is a company member of Third Rail Repertory Theatre. Before moving to Portland, Amy danced both on Broadway and in the national tour of 42nd Street. She recently returned to school to receive her Bachelors of Science in Nursing, and is now working as a registered nurse at the Portland VA Hospital.

DEBORAH DAHLING (Props Master)This is Deborah’s first show at OCT and she thanks Isaac for bringing her on board! Deborah has been designing properties in the Portland area for several years, most recently with Broadway Rose and Clackamas Repertory. When not at the theater, Deborah is the Admissions Director at The Franciscan Montessori Earth School and apparently an increasingly “unhip” mom to tweenage daughter, Macauley!

SCOTT THORSON (Sound Designer)Scott has been living the dream as a sound engineer at Portland Center Stage since 2010. PCS credits include live audio engineer for the world premiere musicals of Somewhere in Time and Lizzie, sound designer for The Mountaintop, The Typographer’s Dream, and Sex With Strangers, live translations for Chinglish, associate sound designer for The People’s Republic of Portland and four seasons of JAW. Other Portland designs include Sweet and Sad, Noises Off, Middletown, and The Night Alive (all Third Rail Repertory); Ivy + Bean (OCT); Up the Fall (PHAME); Uncanny Valley and Fish Girl (Hand2Mouth, as part of the Fertile Ground Festival, Best in Fest, San Francisco Fringe). He holds a degree in architecture from the University of Oregon and is a proud Kenton resident.

KIRA LOMBARDOZZI(Production Manager)This is Kira’s seventeenth season of professional theater here in Portland, and she’s been doing shows with OCT, the most FUN company in town, for a decade now! She is a board member for Many Hats Collaboration, and has been backstage at Broadway Rose Theatre Company, BodyVox Dance, Third Rail Repertory Theatre, and Oregon Ballet Theatre over the years. Kira wants to thank the fantastic collaborators on this production for sharing their great talent with the young people in our community.

MORGAN A. YEATES(Technical Director)Morgan is excited to come back home to Oregon and work with OCT. She was the Assistant Technical Director at James Madison University from 2010 to 2014. She has a Masters Degree in Technical Production from The University of Memphis. She has also studied Technical Theater at

Linfield College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree.

DON CROSSLEY(Production Associate/Production Electrician)Don has been working in theater in Portland for over 20 years and is excited to be part of the OCT Production Team for the 2015–16 season. Previously for OCT, Don has been the Lighting Designer for such notable productions as Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, The Storm in the Barn, Alice & Wonderland, and Einstein is a Dummy, as well as serving as the Production Electrician for several other wonderful OCT productions. Don was a Company Member and Production Manager for Third Rail Repertory Theatre from 2008–2015, and was the Master Electrician for Portland Center Stage from 1996–2007.

KRISTEN MUN(Stage Manager)Kristen is originally from Hawaii, she moved to Oregon in 2005 and received her undergraduate degree from Southern Oregon University. Locally she has been a production assistant at Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, and stage manager at Oregon Children’s Theatre and Portland Shakespeare Project. Outside of Portland she has worked for Idaho Repertory Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She is forever grateful to her family for loving and supporting her and her dreams.

KIMBERLEE FREIMOELLER(Assistant Stage Manager/ Youth Coordinator)Kim is a stage manager here in Portland. She is thrilled to be doing her sixth show with OCT and she feels so lucky to have had the chance to work with such an amazing group of people. In her free time Kim enjoys a good book, walking on the waterfront, and writing.

ROSS MCKEEN(Managing Director)Ross has worked for nonprofit and public institutions for nearly three decades—with half of that time focused on the performing arts. A transplanted Californian (though with family roots in Oregon stretching back more than 150 years!), Ross moved to Portland in 1995 to become general manager of Portland Center Stage. In 1999, Ross became an independent fundraising and planning consultant working with dozens of the region’s cultural organizations. In 2002, he was recruited to guide the Oregon Cultural Trust through its inaugural year and launch a statewide promotional plan. Through his consulting practice and his work with the Trust, Ross has come to know and appreciate Portland’s vibrant arts and cultural community. When the opportunity arose to join the OCT team in 2008, he gladly signed on to work with fun, creative people carrying out the mission of introducing children to the joy of theater.

18 Oregon Children’s Theatre

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives.

OCT annually reaches 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and 4 Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program serves 30–40,000 students per year.

Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.
