Dear Friends in Christ,

For almost a month now we have had the opportunity to resume public Masses in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. Our pastors and parish staff are very happy to see you again! The diocese has provided detailed guidance on safety and sanitization protocols to our pastors. The diocese’s guidelines were reviewed by doctors in West Michigan, including an infectious disease expert. Their confidence in our precautions assured me that we could responsibly resume the all-important task of celebrating the Eucharist together. The logistics for how these directives are implemented will be different for each parish. Please watch your parish website or social media, or call the parish office for details. I remind those who are able to attend Mass to abide by the diocesan/parish guidelines in order to protect your fellow congregants as well as yourselves and your loved ones. I thank you for your cooperation and especially thank pastors who are doing their best to see that everyone who comes to church remains as safe as possible by observing the guidelines. While I believe we have done our best to protect the health and well-being of our parishioners, I am well aware the risks of COVID-19 remain. Therefore, I am extending the dispensation for all Catholics within the territory of the Diocese of Grand Rapids from their obligation of attending Sunday Mass through July 31. The dispensation is granted broadly to ensure that anyone who needs to stay home to protect the common good can do so confidently, in good conscience. But those who are truly able to attend Mass should remember that we are transformed by being joined to Christ in the Eucharist. Only a weighty reason should keep us from being sanctified through participation in and our reception of Christ’s body and blood. Our obligation to keep holy the Lord’s Day is of utmost importance to our continued faith life. Mass will continue to be televised at 10 a.m. Sunday on FOX 17 and livestreamed on the diocesan website (grdiocese.org) and Facebook page (Diocese of Grand Rapids). Please continue to check the diocesan website: http://bit.ly/GRdioceseCOVID19Updates and social media for the latest information on our COVID-19 response. In this time of trial and testing, may we all love and care for one another and be patient and kind. We entrust our prayers to the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, patroness of those who suffer illness. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

Hello everyone,

Losing loved ones always leaves the family a great sorrow that only time can heal with prayers and support of others. It is natural that we remember the deceased and grieve for them. Sometimes, facing the grief is a way of healing for our souls. However, for us Christians, the best way is to turn to the sacraments to find strength and comfort. We commemorate our loved ones by praying for them as individuals, a family or with the community. Above all, the Holy Mass is the priceless gift in which the sacrificial offering of Jesus brings salvation to our deceased members.

Homebound Ministry

During the locking down of the Church, six members of our parish have gone to the Father’s house, their funerals were celebrated at Church without Mass and the family members were limited. Now, that the Mass has been resumed, each weekend, Father Peter will offer Mass intentions to pray for their souls and their families. For those deceased, may God grant them the eternal peace & joy in His Kingdom. For their loved ones, may God bless them with His healing grace in this time of grief. This weekend, let us pray for Judith Marie McCaffey and her family. Her funeral took place March 19th, 2020. Blessings always, Sr. Mai Do

Christian Services

I would like to say Thank you to our benefactors who provided us with a great concert on Friday, June 19, celebrating the beginning of summer. Your generosity is beyond measure. Everyone who attended had a great time.

+++ After having two meetings and consulting the Diocese, it has been decided that we will have a Church Picnic this year. Saturday, July 18th from 9am to 2 pm, will be our Annual Women’s Expo. We will only be using one tent and the number of venders have been reduced. This year we also will have the tables spaced 6 ft apart, with one way traffic, and masks required for venders and customers.

Sunday, July 19th, 12pm to 3pm, we will be having a picnic. You will need to bring your own lunch, either from home or your favorite restaurant, and a chair or blanket to set out in our lawn. Seating at tables will be limited. Instead of a cake walk this year we have a candy walk for the kids as well as bingo. Help will be needed for these 2 events, but not as much as

other years. Please sign up in the Gathering Area.

Things will be different this year, but the committee and

staff want us to be able to get together and enjoy each

other’s company. If this goes well, maybe we can plan

something for August and we can have a summer full of

fun.

A message from Ruth, Coordinator of Christian Services/Volunteers

We are living in strange times. There are so many questions, but no answers. We actually have to wait for the answers. Question: When will we be able to meet in the Family Center for supper? Answer: I don’t know. I’ll get back to you. Yes, this is a frustrating time. I want to shake your hand and give you a hug, but we are not allowed to. We need to screen people in before Mass and then clean & disinfect the pews after each Mass. This could continue for a long time. Thank you to everyone that stays and helps. We have a system for screening people and cleaning the pews that is quick and easy. This has been a learning experience for all of us and together we are doing it.

In the Diocese of Grand Rapids, our Bishop has asked the faithful to wear masks to Mass. The purpose of wearing these face coverings is to protect the other people in the church by minimizing the spread of this airborne illness. This is important because people can carry and spread the virus without any symptom of the disease. When everyone wears a mask and social distances, the risk involved in gathering is greatly diminished. When the coronavirus hit, we didn’t know how long the pandemic would last. A lot of us just knew we felt adrift without our churches, without our neighbors, and some without even their families. The effects of quarantine were hard and emotions ran strong regardless of what you believed about quarantine or social distancing; the call to reopen the churches got louder from the Faithful. Catholics were welcomed back last month with the request to wear their masks and social distance. Parish staff across the diocese put in hours to prepare the churches for the safest openings possible. We clean in between masses, ask for social distance, screen at the door, have hand sanitizer and soap available, and in line with the Bishop’s request, we ask that you wear a mask. I know that wearing a mask can feel very uncomfortable. I understand others may be opposed to the mandate on an ideological level. Just like in quarantine, there are strong feelings on both sides of the mask debate. But your mask is the best tool you have to keep your parish priest safe. Your mask allows Fr. Peter to say Mass in front of hundreds of people over the weekend then much more safely give an anointing to a sick or elderly person the next day. Your mask allows office staff with high risk conditions to feel safer at work, keeping the office doors open to support you. Your mask makes it possible for me to return to Mass and provide music for the liturgy. When you wear a mask you are protecting others, and they are protecting you. We are being asked to practice the virtues of obedience, humility, and charity. And it won’t last forever! Thank you for your cooperation.

Youth Ministries

Hello everyone! I hope that everyone had a blessed Father’s Day and was able to spend the day honoring, remembering, and celebrating all of the fathers and father figures in their lives. I know that it’s a week later, but I wanted to take some time to reflect on the importance of fathers and fatherhood. It might seem a bit strange for me to be reflecting on this topic, since I’m never going to end up a biological or religious father and will probably never serve as a father figure. Even though that’s the case, I can’t help reflecting on this topic and its importance. Our culture has developed a particular image of fatherhood. Fathers are our leaders, protectors, and providers. They teach us how to be strong, maybe how to throw a baseball or ride a bike. They are leaders who make the tough decisions, forging their own path and rarely seeking help. They are often men of action, sacrificing their time to work for their families. There’s a sense that fatherhood naturally comes with a kind of stoicism or apartness. But despite all of these images being very common in our culture, particularly in our film or television portrayals of fatherhood, they’re not the ones that ring as most meaningful to me. Even though many of them can be true to life, I find myself thinking about the most important moments I’ve shared with my father, and I recognize that there’s something more to it. These moments have been marked by humor, openness, honesty, compassion, and gentility. Closeness. This leads me to think about a father’s true strength, which I think shines brightest when it reflects the nature of Our Father. It makes me think of the words at Jesus’s baptism, recounted in Matthew: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” In modern English: I love you. I’m proud of you. It’s these words that we all need to hear. And not only do we need to hear it from our fathers, but our fathers need to hear it from us. Whether or not we have our father or a father figure living on Earth with us now, we can always appeal to and build that relationship with Our Father, the one who serves as a model for all fathers on Earth. He creates us, protects us, guides us, laughs with us, weeps with and for us, and most important, loves us. We are all called to love, but I believe that God the Father calls our fathers to emulate and model it in a special way. And we can appreciate that not just on Father’s Day, but every day. Peace, Allison
