Some have found that it can be a waste of money and resources. Motivated by a desire to be good stewards of the environment, the United States Postal Service (USPS) generated more revenue and saved millions of dollars with green initiatives, and it continues to explore more mailing options that will make the planet a better place to live. By reducing the amount of energy, water, and landfill waste and employing heavy recycling management, the USPS saved approximately $52 million in 2012. In order to maximize your visibility but decrease costs and waste, follow these tips from the USPS. Look for value! Postcards, smaller packaging or simple gifts can be cost-effective and use fewer materials. Recycled and biodegradable paper are also great choices; companies should promote that they use environmentally friendly materials, too, says Target Marketing Magazine. Repurpose, reduce and recycle! Be very organized and conservative with inventory so unused materials do not go to waste. If there is excess mail supplies, find a way to put them to good use in the next campaign or recycle them properly. Keep your mail lists up to date. You waste money and time mailing materials to addresses that are no longer valid. Reduce waste and conserve resources by periodically updating your list(s). Track to see what works and what doesn’t. Evaluate your return on investment after a marketing campaign, says Target Marketing Magazine. Consider a different marketing method if a direct mail campaign was not successful last time. If you want to minimize the amount of direct mail you receive here are some tips: Ask for Cooperation: When receiving catalogs, advertising flyers or other offers from companies that you will not do business with, ask them to remove your address from their list. Control your Exposure: When submitting purchase orders, registrations for classes/conferences and subscriptions include a statement about preventing waste and protecting privacy by not adding your address to mailing lists. Spread the word: Your company or organization should let everyone know about the goal of minimizing waste from unwanted mail. Holiday Schedule When the holiday falls on a weekday, collections for the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day. There is no service interruption or delay when the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. 27 2 28

The 2nd Annual cArt aRt ContestThe 2nd Annual cArt aRt contest brought creativity once again. On Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the City’s Earth Arbor Day event artists, families, businesses, and church groups submitted decorated trash & recycling carts for a contest that encouraged participants to transform a basic cart into a vibrant piece of artwork. This year there was a “fan favorite” vote that got event visitors involved in selecting their preferred cart. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners.
