KINGSTON CHAMBERNEWS JUNE 2011 KINGSTONCHAMBER.ON.CA ISSUE 12 JUNE ANOTHER REASON WHY WE ARE KINGSTON’S VOICE OF BUSINESS Since January I have been using the slogan “Get Connected”! Connected to the Chamber through the many new social media sites we have created. Connected by way of face to face participation in the many events the Chamber offers its members. “Get connected” is also the slogan used by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and endorsed by the Ontario Chamber. Remember that as a member of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, you are also part of the larger provincial and national counterparts, each with their strategic mandates. “Get Connected” might seem like a very simple mantra for Chambers to have; but as I learned at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting last month, it is more than just lip service. As a member of the Ontario Chamber, it is your opportunity to voice to our local board of directors, those issues that affect our workplace and businesses. Subsequently, if an issue has provincial ramifications and can be “resolved” then it can be brought forward to be adopted as a policy resolution by the Ontario Chamber. As I witnessed Dalton McGuinty, Andrea Horvath and Tim Hudak in attendance at the AGM, I understood the power of the larger network as a lobby group. This is where we become a true advocate and Kingston’s Voice of Business. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is lobbying for issues that affect our daily businesses. Your Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce was able to have a resolution pass that requests the OCC to lobby the Provincial Government to change restrictions placed on skilled trades. This ensures that the hard work over the past few years is not forgotten and that the current restrictions that some apprentices face must continue to be looked at. Trades are an essential part of the business community and hurdles, especially now, can have huge implications on employment opportunities in our communities. If a tradesperson cannot find apprentice work in Ontario, they move out of province. It is a topic such as this that we encourage you to bring forward to your Chamber. Make your voice heard and your membership will work for you! May 10 th Breakfast – Setting a new course for tourism in Eastern Ontario. The Donald Gordon Conference Centre hosted our May Chamber Breakfast featuring RTO 9 (Region 9 Regional Tourism Organization) speakers Libby Smith and Richard Johnston. Libby Smith was announced as the RTO 9 Executive Director effective February 22, 2011. Ms. Smith engaged those in attendance with an inspiring talk about her efforts to represent the region. The organization is committed to attracting and sustaining visitation growth, revenue and product development for the region that stretches from Prince Edward County to Cornwall. Following an introduction by past RTO 9 co-chair and owner of First Canada Inns in Kingston Bill Swan, Richard Johnston, RTO 9 Board President gave a detailed overview of the RTO 9 mandate. Mr. Johnston is co-owner of By Chadsey's Cairns Winery and Vineyard in Prince Edward County. Thank you to McCoy Bus Service and tours for sponsoring the occasion. ANOTHER REASON WHY WE ARE KINGSTON’S VOICE
OF BUSINESS
Since January I have been using the slogan “Get Connected”!
Connected to the Chamber through the many new social media
sites we have created. Connected by way of face to face
participation in the many events the Chamber offers its
members. “Get connected” is also the slogan used by the
Canadian Chamber of Commerce and endorsed by the Ontario
Chamber. Remember that as a member of the Greater Kingston
Chamber of Commerce, you are also part of the larger provincial
and national counterparts, each with their strategic mandates.
“Get Connected” might seem like a very simple mantra for
Chambers to have; but as I learned at the Ontario Chamber of
Commerce Annual General Meeting last month, it is more than
just lip service. As a member of the Ontario Chamber, it is your
opportunity to voice to our local board of directors, those issues
that affect our workplace and businesses. Subsequently, if an
issue has provincial ramifications and can be “resolved” then it
can be brought forward to be adopted as a policy resolution by
the Ontario Chamber. As I witnessed Dalton McGuinty, Andrea
Horvath and Tim Hudak in attendance at the AGM, I understood
the power of the larger network as a lobby group. This is where
we become a true advocate and Kingston’s Voice of Business.
The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is lobbying for issues that
affect our daily businesses.
Your Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce was able to have a
resolution pass that requests the OCC to lobby the Provincial
Government to change restrictions placed on skilled trades. This
ensures that the hard work over the past few years is not
forgotten and that the current restrictions that some apprentices
face must continue to be looked at. Trades are an essential part
of the business community and hurdles, especially now, can have
huge implications on employment opportunities in our
communities. If a tradesperson cannot find apprentice work in
Ontario, they move out of province. It is a topic such as this that
we encourage you to bring forward to your Chamber. Make your
voice heard and your membership will work for you!
