ANOTHER REASON WHY WE ARE KINGSTON’S VOICE

OF BUSINESS

Since January I have been using the slogan “Get Connected”!

Connected to the Chamber through the many new social media

sites we have created. Connected by way of face to face

participation in the many events the Chamber offers its

members. “Get connected” is also the slogan used by the

Canadian Chamber of Commerce and endorsed by the Ontario

Chamber. Remember that as a member of the Greater Kingston

Chamber of Commerce, you are also part of the larger provincial

and national counterparts, each with their strategic mandates.

“Get Connected” might seem like a very simple mantra for

Chambers to have; but as I learned at the Ontario Chamber of

Commerce Annual General Meeting last month, it is more than

just lip service. As a member of the Ontario Chamber, it is your

opportunity to voice to our local board of directors, those issues

that affect our workplace and businesses. Subsequently, if an

issue has provincial ramifications and can be “resolved” then it

can be brought forward to be adopted as a policy resolution by

the Ontario Chamber. As I witnessed Dalton McGuinty, Andrea

Horvath and Tim Hudak in attendance at the AGM, I understood

the power of the larger network as a lobby group. This is where

we become a true advocate and Kingston’s Voice of Business.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is lobbying for issues that

affect our daily businesses.

Your Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce was able to have a

resolution pass that requests the OCC to lobby the Provincial

Government to change restrictions placed on skilled trades. This

ensures that the hard work over the past few years is not

forgotten and that the current restrictions that some apprentices

face must continue to be looked at. Trades are an essential part

of the business community and hurdles, especially now, can have

huge implications on employment opportunities in our

communities. If a tradesperson cannot find apprentice work in

Ontario, they move out of province. It is a topic such as this that

we encourage you to bring forward to your Chamber. Make your

voice heard and your membership will work for you!

May 10th

Breakfast – Setting a new course for tourism

in Eastern Ontario.

The Donald Gordon Conference Centre hosted our May

Chamber Breakfast featuring RTO 9 (Region 9 Regional

Tourism Organization) speakers Libby Smith and Richard

Johnston.

Libby Smith was announced as the RTO 9 Executive

Director effective February 22, 2011. Ms. Smith

engaged those in attendance with an inspiring talk

about her efforts to represent the region. The

organization is committed to attracting and sustaining

visitation growth, revenue and product development

for the region that stretches from Prince Edward County

to Cornwall.

Following an introduction by past RTO 9 co-chair and

owner of First Canada Inns in Kingston Bill Swan,

Richard Johnston, RTO 9 Board President gave a

detailed overview of the RTO 9 mandate. Mr. Johnston

is co-owner of By Chadsey's Cairns Winery and Vineyard

in Prince Edward County.

Thank you to McCoy Bus Service and tours for

sponsoring the occasion.

Kingston exhibits a strong presence at Ontario Chamber AGM in Toronto

Pictured above, l-r, Chamber President Megan

Coughlin, Director Mitch Panciuk, 1st

VP John Ryce

(back), Chamber GM Mark Lewis

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce took a

strong delegation to Toronto on May 6th and 7th at the

Sheraton Hotel in Toronto. This represented the 99th

anniversary of the Annual General Meeting, as the OCC

celebrated 100 years in business.

It was important to be represented at a time when the

Ontario Chamber and its network are changing course

on a few issues. Primarily, the OCC and your local

Chambers will always be a strong advocate for business,

and fight for your rights regarding the promotion and

enhancement of a strong business environment.

On this front, your Chamber was instrumental in having

its latest resolution endorsed and accepted for lobbying

by the OCC policy makers. This resolution strengthens

an earlier policy resolution to get more people working

province-wide in skilled trades by eliminating hurdles

along the way.

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce wishes to

thank the Prince Edward County Chamber of Commerce

and Kelly Pritchard at the OCC for their assistance and

governance respectfully for seeing that this resolution

passed.

Full details on all resolutions adopted at the AGM are

Pitch In Kingston 2010 a “collective” success!

On April 29th, over 3 metric tons of garbage was

ceremoniously collected, bagged and subsequently

picked up to wrap up another highlight in our efforts to

keep our region clean. Pitch-In Kingston is part of a

larger nationwide PITCH-IN CANADA endeavour to clean

up and rejuvenate local neighbourhoods, green spaces,

ravines and waterways to maintain the quality of life in

our communities.

Pitch-In Day 2011 was once again organized and carried

out by a gracious group of selfless volunteers and our

fantastic presenting sponsor, Tim Horton’s in Kingston.

This year marked the third consecutive time whereby

City-wide Tim Horton’s agreed to allow volunteers to

distribute Pitch In bags and good cheer at their

locations. The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce

once again helped to strategize and organize the efforts

with the City of Kingston and Tim Horton’s for a 10th

straight year. Huge thanks go out to Sherri Agnew and

Leanne O’Mara of Agnew Foods Ltd. who helped

spearhead the effort with Tim Horton’s.

The overall day would never have run so smoothly

without the leadership of Rose Giugovaz and her Pitch-

In Kingston committee of volunteers and organizers.

The City of Kingston picked up the majority of garbage

and provided solid advice and assistance leading up to

Pitch-In Day.

Close to 8000 volunteers registered to clean up a

designated area in the City along with hundreds more

who pitched in to clean up their own neighbourhood or

park.

Chamber Network Talks Engagement

At the 99th Annual General Meeting and

Convention in Toronto, the Chamber Network came

together to discuss how to increase engagement in

the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) advocacy

process and improve communications.

The session was led by Kelly Pritchard, OCC Policy

Analyst and Jody Lundrigan, OCC Manager of Media

and Communications, who were joined by John

Laderoute of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of

Commerce and Jason E. Mandlowitz of Hicks-

Morley. The group highlighted the key features of

the OCC advocacy process through walking

delegates through the recent campaign on the

Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.

With the policy process outlined, the floor was

opened to feedback from chambers, boards and

corporate members from across Ontario. Dialogue

surrounded potential methods for getting

chambers involved in advocacy and the use of a

multitude of communication tools. This feedback

was much appreciated. To keep this dialogue

going, the OCC is developing a consultation

process for the continuous evaluation of its

communications. To begin, OCC has developed

questions surrounding network engagement, which were

presented at the AGM session. Members are

encouraged to answers these questions and send

feedback to [email protected]. Some of our

main communications activities include:

• Member Bulletins • Twitter • YouTube Channel • LinkedIn Account

**The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce is at the

forefront of these activities, and has been rolling out more

communication tools over the past 12 months. We currently

have our own Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Youtube

platforms. See us on the web today!
