The Half Way House was

incredibly popular. Was it

something to do with the

free beer and pork pies?

Carolyn Brinsley and

Joyce Glynn made sure

everyone was happy

including Heather Mercer

and Donna.

Bob Blundell, also a trustee, is

and Joe Maloney. Boys?............dream

on, Bob.

Charlotte had been on marshalling

duty with your editor when meeting

The Boys at the 7th

.

A great day and all the players said they would come back next year. It looks like the grand

total raised will be just over £5000 which, for those of you who speak Ugandan, is

20,000,000 Uganda Shillings. It will really help the projects and every penny goes to the

schools. HUGS would like to thank your editor, John Glynn, for his invaluable contribution

to the day. But without HUGS megastar Trustee, Charlotte, it would not happen. Thanks,

Charlotte!!

Ladies EWGA Medal, Sunday, 1st May, 2011

1st Denise Booth 81-9-72 Denise managed to produce the best gross score of the year

with a 81. As this was done in a howling gale it was a superb result.

2nd Linda Moore 92-16 76

John Ollerenshaw

John can be seen most days strolling around the golf club in his usual elegant fashion. For

those of us who have seen his smooth, rhythmic, languid swing it is no surprise. He‟s 86 now

Page 4: Romiley Golf Club Newsletter, May, 2011Newsletter, May, 2011 HUGS - Helping Uganda Schools, Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 May 4th, 2011 was a brilliant day. The sun shone. The Romiley Golf

and has played golf for 65 of those years with his lowest handicap being 4. In 1981 John and

his wife, Phyl, were joint captains of Romiley Golf Club and that was to prove the highlight

of his golfing career. John points out that when he won the doubles K.O with Harry Ryan the

winners had to pay for their name in gold.

In 1940, aged just 16, John started his footballing career playing full back for Manchester

City and that was where he met the best player with whom he had played, Peter Doherty. He

vividly remembers Crewe drawing 2 – 2 at City. The following week John and Peter Doherty

were the only changes made to the team and City won 6 – 1. John modestly gives the credit to

Peter Doherty. In 1945 he was signed by Arsenal Football Club and moved down to London

and stayed for a further six years. He left to get married to Phyllis and returned to his

Hydonian roots. John reckoned that Phyl was the only trophy he won at Arsenal. On the same

day that John signed for Arsenal so did Arthur Mitten, who went on to play for England at

both cricket and football.

John believes that he was born just 70 years too early. When he joined Arsenal his pay was

£14 a week and when he finished he was on the maximum wage possible; £20 a week!

1951 John Ollerenshaw 2011

In the picture on the left John is signing a football for some fans after Arsenal beat Liverpool

2- 1 in the F.A. Cup Final which he felt was the best day of his footballing career.

Ladies Nellie Oldham Trophy, Thursday, 5th

May, 2011

Three Way Tie

Winner - Moira Campbell 1 up wins on cpo from Elsie Hayward and Maureen Codling

Moira - “I was stunned and thrilled to win my very first major. It was one of those days that

everyone dreams of when everything came together. The weather helped and I had the

wonderful encouragement of my partner, Jill Woolstencroft.”

The Nellie, as it is affectionately known, is a par comp (bogey to some) and on 5th May the

ladies drew for partners, as with all majors, and played in the first major of the season.

Traditionally after this competition the ladies meet for a meal and prize presentation and this

year was no exception, but it was a day of ups and downs. In the morning the ladies played

in sunshine but the evening players teed off on the 1st in the rain and holed out on the 18th

still in the rain. The course was desperate for water but the sky could have waited just a few

hours before it fell on Romiley. It‟s a wonder that the last pair out could see the pin on the

18th when they finally putted out at around 9.20.

The computer chose this day not to function so June and Edith had to revert to checking the

cards manually. That wasn‟t all because the computer crash meant that the till in the bar

couldn‟t be opened and the bar staff had to take a note of the card numbers and drinks bought

to punch in later - not an easy job with, as usual, everyone arriving at once.

Then it was discovered that the shut-tight till contained the key to the trophy cabinet where

the Nellie Oldham Trophy is kept! However, it wasn‟t necessary to gather round the glass

and point out the cup to the winner because, miraculously, the computer began to work (as

computers do) in the nick of time and the till came to life and the trophy was retrieved.

Page 6: Romiley Golf Club Newsletter, May, 2011Newsletter, May, 2011 HUGS - Helping Uganda Schools, Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 May 4th, 2011 was a brilliant day. The sun shone. The Romiley Golf

The result was a three way tie for first place with one up and a five way tie with level, and of

course no computer to work it out. Not a problem to June and Edith; a manual count back

was done and the winner was established, Moira Campbell. But then, to end the day, Moira

was unable to be present so the trophy could have stayed in the cupboard after all! The

stunning cup will now be presented at the next presentation evening.

Indeed a day of ups and downs but, thankfully, the oven isn‟t controlled by the computer so

everything went smoothly with the lovely food, and fortunately we haven‟t yet reached the

stage of needing a computer to open a bottle of wine!

Nick‟s driving and iron play was really on form so he was always giving himself a chance of

birdies. However, he claims his putting was not good and Nick missed two from just 6

inches. He managed this score despite having “Lightning” Lee Prendergast as a partner.

Malcolm reckoned he hasn‟t played this well for ages and just enjoyed playing a lot better

than his handicap for a change!

1st 95-24=71 Steve Cleary (Division 3 Results)

Steve was delighted with his round

secondly he stayed out of trouble just

Vets‟ Dinner, 13th

May, 2011

75 vets and guests had a relaxed and entertaining evening for their first social of

the year organised by everybody‟s favourite uncle, Bob Blundell. The next time

you see him just mention “cheese and biscuits” and watch as he holds his head in

his hands.

The Vets‟ Chairman, Malcolm Booker, set the tone for the evening as he gently

reminded the audience of truisms of golf such as, “The less skilled the player the

more likely he is to give advice.” And “No matter how bad you are playing you

can always play worse.” All the truisms provoked laughter and groans of

acknowledgement. The favourite was, “You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of

the time and a two inch branch 90% of the time.”

Malcolm and Jan Booker Wendy and Stuart Booker

John Rubery provided a delightful literary view of golf. From John Betjeman‟s “Seaside

Golf” which begins, “How straight it flew, How long it flew” and ends with the evocative

images of

“Lark song and sea sounds in the air

And splendour, splendour everywhere”

John‟s quote from P.G. Wodehouse was perfect for so many golfers including one of your

editor‟s best friends, Keith Selby.

“The least thing upsets him on the course. He misses short putts because of the uproar of the

butterflies in the adjoining meadow.”

But the piece de resistance was the parody of John Masefield‟s “Sea Fever” which begins, “I

must go down to the sea again....” and refers to urges that cannot be denied by seniors.

I must nip off for a pee again, If I don‟t I may well die

And all I ask is a small bush about four or five feet high

And a clear view and a quick slash and a moment‟s shaking

And a light wind and a good zip that‟s not forever breaking.

Tony finished 4 up against the course in this bogey competition. “I was all over the place but

seemed to finish on or near the green and the chipping and putting was really good. It was a

struggle on the back 9 and I was pleased not to have gone out early or late in the day when

Chris Mullin was 4 up after 9 holes and just couldn‟t maintain that score but finished a very

creditable 2 up.

This day will be remembered because Man United

clinched the league title and Man City won the FA Cup.

Mark Richardson (City) and Craig Oakes (United) prove

that some supporters can share the joy!

In fact a city united!

Evening Mixed, Saturday, 14th

May, 2011

In the lounge at the club house your editor was sitting with Lady Captain, Pauline Whitehead,

who had just played in this event. “Who is that chap in the purple sweater,” she asked.

“That,” I replied, “is the infamous Mark Kitchen. But why do you ask?”

“Whenever he sees me he always calls me Elsie and salutes!”

“I think, Lady Captain, that the answer is in your club title. L. C.” “Ah!” said an

enlightened “Elsie”.

Steve and Heather Denton with Mr. President, Ken Cooper

The rain lashed down all day but did it bother Steve. Not one bit. Why? He had been at

Wembley the previous to see City claim the cup and he bestrode the course in a euphoric

state (plus a thick head). Steve provided the brawn whilst Heather provided the subtlety and

finesse around the greens. Heather felt that anyone who actually completed the round

deserved a mention.

These exceptional photos of the woodpecker and fledgling were taken by Phil Cody.

He was hours waiting to capture these moments but my goodness, it was worth it.

Thanks, Phil.

This is a verbatim account of a conversation on the 15th

tee during the vets‟ Invitation Round

inspired by the birds:-

' Looks like the woodpeckers have flown now.'

'I don't know how they peck holes in oak. It's hard, you know. You'd think they'd get

a headache !'

'I gave one of them 2 aspirin the other day.'

'You can't do that with cage birds.'

'Why not ?'

'Well, we tried once, but the parrots e't 'em all! (paracetamol)'

'We bought two parrots years ago. We got them on higher purchase ( higher perches,

geddit ?)'

'Were they going cheap (cheep)?'

Needless to say, the tee shots which followed were, to put it kindly, mediocre... as

was the rest of the round!

Snooker Room

Ken Ashworth and Derek France have played for over 7 years whilst the RGC over 80‟s

Ollerenshaw was absent] have been potting for 20 years. The players are thrilled at the total

transformation and the vastly improved facility with the table having been re-varnished and

recovered. “Many thanks to the members who have made the snooker room a first-class

facility at the Club”. Our grateful thanks to the following members who enabled the

transformation to take place and who carried out the bulk of the work -

Mike Trbojevic – Painting & Decorating Steve Cleary and Nick Madden – Joinery

Mark Kitchen – Electricals Alan Costello – Carpets

Steve Birtles – Blinds Kevin Jones – Plumbing

Last, but not least, our Chairman, Mr Neil McRoberts, for the Snooker Table. Our thanks to

anyone else who did their bit.

Start „em Young

Your editor was fortunate enough to see Chris O‟Reilly taking his son, William, to the

practice ground and he watched in amazement as

William casually hit ball after ball. He did not miss

one.

Chris said that a plastic set of clubs just before he

was 2 started the love affair and William used to

sleep with them. However his clubs now are the

real McCoy and whilst they are still too big it

makes no difference to his striking ability. The best

feature of this encounter was William‟s sheer joy

which can be seen in this photo of the maestro.

Mind you he is 3 NOW!

Winner with 39 points Paul Beesley

Paul did not think 39 points stood a chance of winning and just thought he had had “a nice

next scores were 3 points below him. The wind! It just shows what a good score it was.

Colin and John had a nail-biting match in the 3rd

round of the Daily Mail Foursomes when

they won at the 20th

were also giving a shot to their opponents. Well done, lads.

Handicap Cup, Round Two, Wednesday, 25th

May, 2011

Winner with Gross 80 Nett 66 - Gary Drabble

It was a back 9 of just 36 shots which laid the

foundation for Gary‟s fine score. The pivotal moment

was probably the 6th

when Gary hit his tee shot into a

strong wind and out of bounds and still walked off

with a 6. His putt for a birdie on the 17th

was from a

long way with the ball going down and across the

green before stopping on the edge of the hole. As

cries of anguish rang out so it dropped and the cries

became those of joy!

RGC Vets‟ versus Davenport away, Friday, 27th

May, 2011

The seniors of Romiley travelled to Davenport on Friday, 27th May to take on the home team

in a 10 pairs - a side match. The groups gathered under gloomy skies, but although they

stayed grey, there was none of the previous day's heavy rain. This downpour hadn't managed

to slow down the speedy home greens much, however, and several of the Romiley players

found the change of pace difficult to handle. This may have contributed to the visitors' overall

below par performance. Davenport were victors by 6½ to 3½. The day was enjoyable,

however, with the course in excellent condition, the company sociable and the lunch very

good. Romiley will get a quick chance for revenge as Davenport are due to visit us next

Friday.'

Men‟s All Winners Round 1 (Captain‟s Qualifier 3), Saturday, 28th

May, 2011

And Men‟s All Winners Round 2, Sunday,

29th

May, 2011

Or Alias Smith and Jones

The All Winners Trophy 2011 was played in

extremely blustery and difficult conditions over

Saturday the 28th

and Sunday the 29th

of May.

The leading contenders going into day 2 were

Mark Jones 70 and Mr. Captain 73. At the turn on

Sunday it was clear that, barring disasters, the

eventual winner would come from these two.

Throughout the last 9 holes an exciting duel was

fought, the advantage going first one way and

then the other. At the 16th

there was a 2 shot

swing in favour of the Captain and at 17, 3 shots

changed hands in favour of Mark, a greenside

bunker and a very tricky pin position giving the

Captain a few problems. As might have been

expected it all came down to the last green where

the Captain holed a breaking 18 footer to level the

36 hole aggregate, and claim the Trophy by virtue

of the better second 18.

Page 18: Romiley Golf Club Newsletter, May, 2011Newsletter, May, 2011 HUGS - Helping Uganda Schools, Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 May 4th, 2011 was a brilliant day. The sun shone. The Romiley Golf

Commiserations to Mark. He played some great golf off a handicap of 2, but lost on a card

play-off. Congratulations to Mr. Captain, whose comment when leaving the 18th

green was,

“Captain and a Major. How much better can it get?”
