Contents Viewpoint"Going away"We've just been away for a longweekend to our great-niece’swedding. We went on the Thursday, picked up my wife's sister inSwaffham, and travelled on to AspleyGuise in Bedfordshire to spend thenight with my wife's youngest sisterand her husband. On the Friday, wethen all travelled together in theirmuch larger car to Swindon to stayfor two nights in a hotel in readinessfor an early wedding on the Saturdaymorning. Sunday morning afterbreakfast, we then started on thejourney home again staying anothernight in Bedfordshire beforeventuring back to Norfolk. Why have I told you all this? Thereason is we had been planning thisventure for months. What were wegoing to do with the dog for 4nights? What clothes were we goingto take? Was the weather going tobe warm or cold, fine or rainy? Wehad to pack all the wedding outfitsso that they didn't get creased - thenthere was the casual wear forBedford and travelling, the moresmart casual wear for the hotel - itwas a nightmare! Our car is quitesmall, so would we get all this extrabaggage into it along with all of mysister in laws cases etc. You'll bepleased to know that our daughtervolunteered to have the dog, butwhen we went to collect her, shewas so settled in her new abode, shewas very reluctant to come back toher more sedate life in the Foremanhousehold. But that's another story!I've just been reading the chapter inSt John's Gospel where Jesus waspreparing for His own "going away",when He was praying for Himself, Hisdisciples and us. I find thatremarkable, that over 2,000 yearsago Jesus was praying for you andme. Not only is it remarkable, butit's also amazing that Jesus would

find time to think of others as well asHimself, and that His disciples wouldbe well cared for after His Death,Resurrection and Ascension. This isthe wonderful God that we asChristians have the opportunity tofollow day by day. The joy of thisknowledge is that He hasn't left usbereft, because we all have theopportunity of experiencing thepower of the Holy Spirit in our lives tohelp and direct us in all situations, good or bad.

Yours in His peace and love,PatrickCanon Patrick Foreman (retired)

When Keith and Rosemarie Williamsmarried 42 years ago, they began apartnership not only as a marriedcouple, but were committed to trainingtogether as Salvation Army officers. This meant they would also worktogether for the rest of their workinglife. Their rank of Major signifies thatthey have over fifteen years' service asofficers. In fact they have thirty-nineyears' service. Part of their obedience tothe church is being prepared to moveroughly every five to seven years. Aftertraining, the Williams started theirworking life in Yorkshire and have livedin Glasgow, Norwich, Stowmarket,Sunderland and Stockton. It is a jointappointment and they share the workbetween them. Their experience hasbeen wide and varied. They have livedin racially mixed communities wheretheir Muslim neighbours looked out forthem when they were ministering toneedy folk, often late at night and mightbe vulnerable. They have taken part inthe work the Salvation Army doesnationally to help combat humantrafficking, sometimes caring for those, usually women and babies, who havebeen freed by the police and needimmediate help, such as clothes, foodand medical care. Born on the Isle ofWight, Keith's family left the islandwhen he was twelve at the point atwhich his parents themselves trained tobe officers and moved to take on fulltime work for the church. It was whilethey were posted to Basingstoke thathe met Rosemarie. They have threesons and a young grand-daughter. Itmeans sometimes people think I don'tcare. What's the greatest challenge you'vehad to overcome?- The challenge of notknowing what each day will bring as aSalvation Army officer. When weworked in Glasgow I was asked oneevening to attend a plane that hadcome down. It was the Lockerbiedisaster and I spent three daysministering to the needs of theemergency services who needed foodand solace as they faced the terriblescenes of that event and themselveshad to deal with bereaved families..Your earliest memory? - My parentshad a grocer's shop in the high street inRyde and I remember sitting on a worktop aged about six, playing with a littlewooden train.Favourite food? - Liver and bacon. How would your spouse describe you?- Even-tempered. Have you any regrets? - No. We try tolive our life through prayer andobedience. What is the secret of happiness? - Forme it's about faith. What's the one thing you are reallygood at? - I'm good at figures and goodat listening. What do you do in your spare time? -We don't have much but we spend itwith the family. We see our grand-daughter once a week, which is aprivilege. .If you were Prime Minister for the day?- I'd like us to be a fair society. What is your favourite song? - Thehymn, 'And can it be that I should gainan interest in the Savour's blood'If you were stuck on Fakenham churchtower, who would you like to havewith you? - At the moment, a roofingexpert as there is a hole up there! If you had a whole day to yourself? - I'dspend it at home and send Rosemariefor a day out!Your favourite holiday destination? -The Isle of Wight, which I call home.Is there a person you admire? - WilliamBooth, the Salvation Army's founder. He was a visionary and did many greatand lasting things, for example, he setup the first employment bureau. What makes a good friend? - Being ableto pick up where you left off even aftera long time apart.Your guilty pleasure? - A friend sendsme a box of Turkish delight each yearand I enjoy it!

Susie Brackpool owns and runs Independence Travel in NorwichStreet; it is Fakenham’s premier independent travel agency.

The company has traded in Norwich Street since the early 90s andindeed Susie had worked for it since 1998. But in 2014 she decided totake the leap from employee to owner and bought the business. Today, she happily reports, business is better than ever and despite some of theworldwide problems the travel industry has faced, this Fakenham agencyis doing very well indeed.

She says because the company is independent it can give an unbiasedpersonal service to its customers and while it can provide packagedholidays tocompete with themarket leaders, itsspeciality is tailor-making holidaysto a precise brief. For instance shehelped a customerachieve an ambitionto see elephants intheir own naturalenvironment.

Holidays theyhave created forcustomers havevaried in cost from about £100 to their most expensive ever which costsome £35,000 (yes, you read that right! £35,000!) which included as partof it, a Trans-Siberia railway journey. But Susie stresses that they treat allcustomers to the same very high level of personal service, regardless oftheir travel budget.

So while ambitious trips to, say, the preserved Inca citadel of MachuPicchu in Peru or to Ayer’s Rock in Australia, surfing in Hawaii, or a roadtrip in the USA may be a significant part of the company’s business, over60% of the holidays they arrange and sell are via Norwich Airport toEuropean destinations. The main destinations are Spain, Greece, France,Portugal and Italy. The recent tense situations in some internationaltravel destinations has meant that people have looked to mainlandEurope more for their holidays.

Independence Travel’s customer base is made up of - in order of sizeof share - retired people, families, business travel, groups (such as clubsand societies and, of course, stag and hen parties!) Foreign travel makesup the bulk of the turnover although the significant minority is in UKtravel with the West Country being particularly popular.

In other words Susie’s business is your pleasure and it’s somethingshe and her team take very seriously. She says she can find something foreverybody that may be just that little bit different, that little bit special toensure you get a very different experience from a standard off-the-pegholiday.

If you want to find elephants in Fakenham,Susie can help

TOWN TALKThe 17 Christmas TreeFestival 2017When applications closed on 1st Junewe had applications for 55 trees, thesame number as last year. We arepleased to see that many 'old hands'again wish to take part and that wealso have applications from severalnew charities. We also already have abooking from a coach company forlunches so it is 'all systems go' for CTF2017.

From the Festival Team (Anne,Alison, Elaine, Lily, Roger & Sue)

Town TalkAs I've been away from Fakenham forthe best part of three weeks, myoffering this month will be different.Even now I'm watching the sun setinto the sea on the Welsh coast sohome thoughts are hardlyuppermost. Anyway, here's a poem Iread at a family gathering of mycousins last year. I called it

DAD

These days when I look in the mirrorI can see my father there,

Those laughter lines around the eyes,Those wisps of greying hair.

That wrinkled brow so familiar,And bushy eyebrows too,

And when I put my glasses on, Dear Dad I could be you.

Or is it just my imagining,Does the crafty mirror lie?

Do we all morph into our parentsAs time slips slowly by?

Either way I'll take it calmlyDespite the twinge of fear,

I'm really growing more like DadWith every passing year.

Delivery of "The BEACON" to your home.Did you realise that it takes a small army of volunteers toget the Beacon to your home?First there is the editorial team and those who contributearticles, photos and adverts. Then comes delivery. This is how delivery works:After the printers, Newprint and Design Ltd, have broughtthe boxed copies to Church, a small team meets to bundle3755 Beacons into 70 rounds ready for collection by theband of volunteer deliverers. Bundles are usually ready forcollection on the 4th Saturday of each month. The spread of numbers in the rounds is quite interesting:17 deliverers each deliver 0 - 25 copies17 deliverers each deliver 26 - 50 copies19 deliverers each deliver 51 - 75 copies 9 deliverers each deliver 76 - 100 copies 4 deliverers each deliver 101 - 125 copies 4 deliverers each deliver more than 125 copiesThe smallest round is just 6 copies, the highest is 133copies.

Naturally, from time to time, people have to give up. (Mostof the deliverers are retired and several are in their 80s!)When this happens the procedure for finding a newdeliverer is:1. A note requesting help is put in copies for that round, repeated the next month if there's no response.

2. A message is put in the Beacon itself.3. The third month a note is put in copies for the roundapologising for this being the last delivered copy until wefind a new deliverer.4. If there's still no response, a plea is put in the Bulletin(the weekly church information sheet). Spare copies areusually available in church.

Many rounds are constantly changing as more housingdevelopments appear.

We would like to thank those who help with bundling andall who deliver copies of The Beacon throughout the year.

An extended meditation usingan object or picture

This exercise seems quite complex, but onceyou've tried it there are many different con-texts in which you can use it - not only using apicture. Try it and enjoy discovering more ofGod.

Choose:an object or picture you can identify with.Look at it, as art, consider it, what strikes you...Think:What does this say about me?What does this picture say about my God?What does this picture say about my relation-ship with God?What does this picture say about my relation-ship with a significant other person?

Write:a Haiku (or more than one) arising out of yourthinkingThis is an ancient means of meditating ... for itfocusses the mind around the subject we areconsidering - forcing us to think about essen-tials.A Haiku (Classical form) has 17 syllables inthree lines of: 5 syllables 7 syllablesand 5 syllableswith one punctuation mark.(Japanese)

Reflect:Having written a Haiku what does it say toyou? about God, about yourself, about others, about your relationships.

In this month's Beacon, the themeis holidays and getting away. Ifyou're not going away and aretwiddling your fingers, thefollowing might be just for you.The Fakenham Ukulele Group wasstarted 18 months ago by JohnLee and began with about 8members, all novices, and Johnguided the group with sometuition and encouragement. Heeventually moved on to do otherthings and Graham Thomas tookover the reins. Laurie Coburn, oneof the original eight both men andwomen, said the group meets atthe Gallow Sports Club onTuesday mornings between 10am-12noon. The cost is £2 persession. The group has grown insize without furtheradvertisement but if this interestsyou go to Gallow to watch or play.Absolute beginners welcome.

The group had its first gig atGallow Sports Centre lastChristmas. This was followed by aperformance at the Beer Festivalin the Community Centre. (I wassinging and in the second row ofukuleles on stage. Afterwardsthree people said they were glad Iplayed. I had to say I only sang butit may have spurred others on totake it up!) Four members alsotook part in the Museum at Night-where the photo was taken. Thebiggest gig is yet to come as partof Active Fakenham on 29th July. There will be a town centre eventand after the Harley Davidson's

bikes have paraded, the Ukes willplay such favourites as Bye ByeLove; Stand by Me; Singing theBlues and that old favourite Hevyou got a loight boy and others.

So how about getting started? There's no need to read music butonce you've mastered about 5/6chords, which aren't too tricky, you can play along to severalsongs. The page of music youfollow will say what chord to playwith the accompanying words. Ithas been shown that playing withothers positively enhances yourperformance.

So it's been an excitingdevelopment that members of thegroup have begun to play with theAcoustic Sessions at The Limes.

This happens every Wednesdayevening from about 8.15pm.There are some very goodguitarists, like Ken Connor andBob Bones, both of whom play inthe Ukes group, John and Wendy, singers and guitarists and othermusicians including Laurie onUkulele. If you'd like to go andlisten or play along, why not havea go? You'd be made mostwelcome.
