HOLT IN BLOOM JUDGING DAY Anglia in bloom judges came to visit Holt on Wednesday 12th July. Thankfully the rain cleared up and the sun shone as Mayor Duncan Baker, Deputy Mayor Maggie Prior, Town Clerk Elaine Oliver and the judges, walked around Holt. The judges were very impressed with the community spirit as they were shown the highlights of our Holt in Bloom campaign. After tea the group visited the cemetery on a trailer, calling in at Spouts Common and via the roundabout to look at the ‘Owlies’ on the roundabout.A lot of mirth and fun was had on board the trailer and they all arrived at the cemetery in one piece! The Town will have to wait until September to see what has been awarded ..... so fingers,

legs and toes crossed! On behalf of the Town Council, the organisers of Holt in Bloom would like to thank all the volunteers and traders who took part in this and made Holt look very special. Now to get on with planning 2018!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERSfrom Able Community Care Limited

Question: What is the difference between analogue hearing aids and digital hearing aids and where can I get some information with reference to what the NHS can provide and also some advice should I decide to purchase an aid?Answer: Analogue hearing aids amplify electronic signals whilst digital hearing aids use a tiny computer to process sound and they are designed to reduce background noise and can be programmed to suit different living conditions. The NHS has high-quality digital hearing aids up to the top of the mid-range. For most situations, they perform very well and the wait-ing time to get one is short. It takes only two to five weeks from hav-ing your hearing test to getting your NHS hearing aid fitted. For guidance on aids that can be purchased privately visit the Action on Hearing Loss (formally the RNID) and download their Fact Sheet with reference to private purchase www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk Question: I am a widow and finding it difficult to make ends meet. Neither I nor my husband had private pensions and now on one state pension I have to be very careful. My husband was a farm worker for 50 years of his life, is there any related organisation that I can make contact with to see if they can help me with a problem I have.Answer: You do not say what the problem is but you should make contact with the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. This organisation provides assistance to retired or disabled farmers, farm managers / workers and their dependents in England and Wales. You can write to; The Head of Welfare, Shaw House, 27 West Way, Oxford OX2 0QH. If you would like to telephone them, the helpline number is 01865 724931

A FEW PUNS TO PONDER!Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says “Dam!”Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, “I’ve lost my electron.”The other says, “Are you sure?”The first replies, “Yes, I’m positive.”There was the person who sent ten puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

MILO COMES HOMEIn October last year you kindly put a notice in the Holt Chronicle with regards to my cat Milo who went missing on 12th September last year.I had a few calls but unfortunately it wasn’t my boy.I didn’t give up hope but the thought of not knowing was worse.Imagine my surprise when on Monday 3rd July this year, late evening I opened my front door to find that somehow my boy had made his way home and, considering he had been gone nearly nine months, didn’t look underfed or hurt in anyway, just very nervous and very tired.Thank you for your help and it just goes to prove that you should never give up hope. The photograph is of Milo, five minutes after returning home!Tracie

THREE NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL OUTDOOR SPACES RETAIN GREEN FLAGS

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods among best open spaces in the UKHolt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green

Flag for 2017/18.This is the thirteenth year in a row that Holt Country Park (left) has been able to fly the Green Flag, which denotes a welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed site. The award demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood (below, right), just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods (right) the following year. All three are run by North Norfolk District

Council, with part of Pretty Corner Woods run by the Woodland Trust.Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “We are delighted that all three sites have retained their hard won status. A lot of hard work goes into making sure these beautiful places stay both welcoming and in excellent condition.“Don’t forget that we also organise events at these locations, so you can choose to visit any one of the three as part of an organised event or in your own time.”The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL GRAHAM ALLENAWARD-WINNER WINS COVETED REGIONAL ACCOLADE

A building project at Pensthorpe Natural Park that last year won the Graham Allen Award for conservation and design, has won the ‘best inclusive building’ category in the regional round of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards after being nominated by North Norfolk District Council.Hootz House in Pensthorpe was awarded the 2016 Graham Allen Award for its exceptional design and contribution to the built environment of the District. The play barn incorporates a 300m2 indoor adventure centre. The nomination for the LABC Award also included the renovation of an 18th century cottage in the park for commercial use. The ‘best inclusive building’ category recognises community, education and sustainability.Cllr Sue Arnold Cabinet Member for planning policy said: “This is a

tremendous achievement and congratulations to Pensthorpe for such thoughtful building projects. The awards evening was a really good opportunity to appreciate the commitment and expertise our Building Control Team gives to North Norfolk.”The LABC East Anglia Building Excellence Awards are a celebration of the best projects in the region for quality and compliance with building regulations, showcasing the excellent working relationships Local Authority Building Control has with regional developers. NNDC entered several of the best projects

completed in the past 12 months and two further buildings were shortlisted, but didn’t win an award. These were The Watch House, The Gangway, Cromer, for ‘best extension or alteration to an existing dwelling’, and Running Hare Barn, Mill Road, East Ruston for ‘best change of use or conversion of an existing building’.Cllr Arnold added: “All the projects deserve congratulations for being shortlisted in their category; that is a substantial achievement.”The awards ceremony was held at Kings College, Cambridge last month and hosted by BBC Look East’s David Whiteley. If you are interested in putting your project forward for next year’s awards, please contact the Building Control Team at North Norfolk District Council on 01263 516345.

ANOTHER SUPERB CONCERT FROM

FALCONDear Caroline,Saturday 9th July saw a crowd of people descending on St Andrew’s Church, Holt for another excellent concert organised by Falcon. This time the artists were three young musicians, ex the Purcell School, who had met and first played together in 2003 while at the school. They were Anna Hashimoto - clarinet, Emily Ross - oboe and Nina Ashton - bassoon. Despite not having played together for some time, due to their careers having taken them all over the world, their ensemble was matchless and their performance left us all longing for more. They played a wide variety of wind music ranging from such well known composers as Beethoven and a solo clarinet Sonatina by Richard Rodney Bennett to Alexandre Tansman and Erwin Schulhoff. What can I say, their performance contained music for all tastes and left one just wanting more and more. They all explained about their instruments and the difference between single and double reed instruments. The oboe and bassoon have double reeds, a bit like blowing between two pieces of grass held between ones thumbs, and the clarinet only one, and also talked about the music they were playing, which greatly added to the enjoyment. The day before they had been in Holt Community Primary School, playing and showing their instruments, a music lesson the children are unlikely to forget. I used to do that sort of thing when I was part of the instrumental team for the London Borough of Barnet Education Department and I remember the excitement of the children on seeing and hearing live music so close up. With string instruments we could also let them have a go. This is unfortunately, not possible with woodwind instruments.I would congratulate Falcon for all they do for the arts in North Norfolk and wish them long life and success!Yours sincerely,Theo Crowder

SINFONIA VIVADear Caroline,Further to the letter from Kate and Keith Gosden in Issue 380, I cannot agree that this was well advertised. After talking to many people in Holt (including retailers) they agree with me.I have been informed that leaflets were supposed to have been distributed but that did

not happen.I am looking forward to when they come back again and I am sure more people will attend if they are kept informed.Yours sincerely,Roy Hewitt

GENEROSITY STILL EXISTS

Dear Caroline,Many thanks to the female customer in Budgens, Holt, who gave me a 1st class stamp, Wednesday 12th July, at around 6.00pm. I was desperate to catch the last post and asked this lady if she would mind if I went in front of her because I needed a 1st class stamp. She said I could have one of hers and refused payment. That was really very kind and generous. Who ever you are, I hope you have a very happy, fun and fulfilling life; you deserve it. Yours sincerely,Humphrey Boon.

HOLT POST OFFICEDear Caroline,I know a lot of residents of Holt didn’t approve of the Post Office being in Budgens as Mr Baker owns the building. The Post Office was going to close anyway, where else in Holt could it go?We need to use the Post Office as I understand from the Post Office staff that it is struggling. If this does close, which could be a possibility, where would we go? High Kelling is the nearest. This would make it difficult for those who don’t have cars.I am a frequent visitor and I myself would find this difficult.Yours sincerely,June Wood

SPREAD LOVE NOT HATE

Dear Caroline,Regarding Father Howard’s article in Issue 379.I wonder if Father Howard could define the word ‘love’ for us? I wonder, too if he might give us the definition of the word ‘Christian’? Perhaps the meaning of the word ‘capitalism’ might come under scrutiny and how this differs from Christianity. Now, what about ‘culture’? Three ‘C’s’, Christianity capitalism and culture. Another interesting discussion, debate, might be how the modern day disciples of Christ differ from the

first, the early apostles, and, whilst he’s got his thinking cap on perhaps he could explain how the fishermen of Galilee came to be living in palaces wearing opal rings and fine raiment. Now in return for all this brainwork I’d like to offer something in return. The word ‘terrorist’ comes from the word ‘territory’ and means ‘one who defends his territory’. Now, is it the Christians or the capitalists who are trying to change, rearrange or perhaps destroy the culture of the Middle East!?Yours sincerely,J EleftheriadesPS. In case my name presents a problem, I am white British, born in North London of white British parents.PPS. In case you are trying to work out whose side I’m on, I’m on the side of truth.

HOW MANY MORE TIMES!

Dear Caroline,Three times in the past month I have been following cars in an orderly manner when I see their brake lights appear.Thinking they are easing down for some reason, but not stopping, I have eased down behind them only to find that they come to an abrupt stop and then put on their indicator light to signal that they are turning right! This has resulted in me having to brake quite hard, quite violently in one case, while the driver in front waits for oncoming vehicles to pass before completing his manoeuvre. Is it beyond reason for the drivers concerned to indicate early enough for the drivers behind to be able to see the indicator light before the brake lights?I know that the drivers behind should be driving in a way that they can stop safely if they need to, but abrupt stops in front of other drivers can easily lead to concertina effect accidents that could, so easily be avoided by early indication.Yours sincerely,R Baxter

10 Station Road Holt NR25 6BS Since opening Holt Holistic Centre on a cold cloudy day in November 2003, the centre has gone from strength to strength. Having so many experienced therapists to work along side me has made it so enjoyable. Currently I have :Acupuncture with Alison CourtneyHolistic massage with Amanda MarshallHomeopathy by Melanie CookMedical Herbalism with Andrew Chevallier Physiotherapy with Claire DyeShiatsu by Sebastian DeansYamuna facial therapy with Sharon Clark ZeroBalancing with Carol ShaughnessyAnd of course myself, Sara Thornley (practicing as Sara Massingham) using Classical manipulation and CranioSacral therapy. Since qualifying with a Mctimoney chiropractic DC in December 1999 I have enriched my “tool kit” with lots of wonderful techniques. I still use the amazing techniques of the late John Mctimoney but I also integrate cranial sacral, myofascial release, muscle activation and massage techniques when needed, enabling me to get to the core of the problem.Over the years I have been more interested in the root of the problem rather than ‘fixing for now’ and I have been working using the cranial sacral system for this simple reason. CranioSacral Therapy is a light-touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life and wellness. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. During times of stress and trauma our bodies produce their own reaction to a situation and we each present our own unique combination of ailments, pains and dysfunctions. By using these techniques, I am able to release restrictions through the body, allowing its own innate healing system to self correct. Healing is a process and takes time and cannot be rushed, so from September my appointment times are changing to allow the bodies natural process to do its thing. For more information please call Holt Holistic Centre 01263 711898 or visit our website. We look forward to hearing from you.Sara Thornley practicing as Sara Massingham Ltd

OUR LOCAL CHURCHESST. ANDREW’S, HOLT

Holt Church has existed at least since the 12th century. However in 1708 a great fire engulfed the Town including the Church (which at that time was partly thatched-roof). During rebuilding, the Church’s reconstruction was much supported by Norfolk landowners including Viscount ‘Turnip’ Townshend, Sir Walter Walpole and the future King George II. At a later date, in the 1860’s, the Church’s interior was redesigned by the Victorian architect William Butterfield.Present-day support has enabled the Church to extend by the addition of a multi-purpose Meeting Room opening onto a garden terrace. The Church and Churchyard are beautifully maintained by teams of loyal volunteers. With its flourishing congregation the Church has become a popular venue for concerts, social and charitable events. A Tuesday Poppy Centre provides for those with dementia and their carers.Services are held daily, with a Sunday Eucharist at 10.30am attended by well over a hundred people. A Book of Common Prayer Communion precedes this service at 8.00am.If you would like to have your church or chapel included in this feature, please send your contribution in for consideration (150 words plus a photograph) to: [email protected] or post to:Mr R Cox, 12A Kelling Close, HOLT NR25 6RU.

FROM THE RECTORYDear friends,The parable of the sower

told by Jesus is probablyfamiliar to anyone whoattended Sunday School intheir youth. It is a simple storyabout a man who went out tosow some seed. Some of theseed fell on the path and waseaten by the birds, some fell onstony ground without muchsoil and so after germinatingbecause its roots were shallowwas scorched by the sun, withered and died. Other seed

fell among weeds and as it grew it was eventually choked by theweeds, rather like my garden and of course some seed fell on goodsoil and yielded a rich harvest.

Jesus compared the seed to the Word of God and the soil tothe condition of the human heart. The Word of God is one of love, mercy, compassion and forgiveness, the seeds of which are sowninto the human heart. Yet the heart can be either hard, impenetrable, and shallow, or else open and receptive to thingsthat are good.

Hard and impenetrable hearts promote hatred and divisioncausing people to engage in violence and terror. Shallow heartsmean we can be superficial, uncommitted, and detached. Theheart can also be easily seduced and corrupted by the desire forwealth and power at the expense of others. Yet the heart can alsobe open and receptive and produce a rich harvest of love, kindness, compassion, empathy, acceptance and generosity.Something I see on a daily basis in the people I see and meetaround the parish and something we all witnessed in theaftermath of recent terrorist attacks and the tragic fire in Grenfelltower when communities came together in response to people ingreat need.

The good soil of an open and receptive heart will bear forth arich harvest and not only transform our own lives but the lives ofthose around us. But the heart like any garden needs to be lookedafter, weeded and nurtured if it is to reap its potential harvest. We all have a little gardening to do! The barrenness of hatred, division and prejudice cannot be allowed to replace the fertile soilof the human heart.

Jesus’ message was simple and if we hear and receive it withopen hearts, allow it to take root and grow it will surely yield aharvest of love and compassion and compel us to sow the seed ofGod’s love in the soil of the world around us. It is a simple messagethe world needs to hear and as Jesus said, “Let anyone with earslisten!”

Kindest regards,

Fr. Howard

IDIOT SIGHTINGWhen my husband and I arrived at a garage to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver side door. NHS STAFF DELIVER WELCOME BOOST TO NORTH NORFOLK

CHARITYA charity that seeks to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in North Norfolk has received a welcome boost, thanks to the baking and yoga exploits of generous NHS staff.Employees at North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) took part in two fundraising activities: monthly bake-off events and staff yoga sessions.Over the course of four months, they collected more than £170.00 through staff donations and this week they presented the money to the North Norfolk Radio Kids Trust.Staff at the CCG chose the trust as their nominated charity for 2017 after hearing about its valuable work with schools, youth groups and local families.Every penny it receives or raises is spent in North Norfolk, with the aim of helping under privileged or disabled children.North Norfolk Radio’s breakfast show presenter Rob Chandler visited the CCG’s offices in Aylsham on Tuesday 20th June to receive a cheque for £159.14.He said: “The North Norfolk Radio Kids Trust always take great pride in letting successful grant applicants know that it’s through the generosity and support of local people and organisations that we’ve been able to help them. We’re therefore absolutely delighted with the money raised by the team at the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group, it really will make a difference to a child living in our area.”As well as their successful monthly bake-off events, employee Fiona Craig has been hosting staff yoga sessions after work to raise funds for the kids trust. The CCG’s Engagement Manager Rebecca Champion, whose cake-making skills saw her crowned the ultimate ‘Baking Queen’ in the bake-offs, said: “We were all aware of the fantastic work carried out locally by the North Norfolk Radio Kids’ Trust so we’ve been very happy to support it.We all enjoyed the fundraising. It was a great team effort, everyone got involved in some way. We hope our efforts will enable the kids’ trust to help more disadvantaged children in North Norfolk.”For more information on the North Norfolk Radio Kids Trust Charity, and details of how you can support its work or apply for a grant, visit its website: www.northnorfolkradio.com/charity.

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGA Taste of the Good Life

We are blessed to have an allotment and, although by no means experienced gardeners, we do like to have a go every year. It’s just such fun to plant and watch your food growing ... although sometimes it can be very frustrating! We witnessed the pigeons growing fat on our peas and chard (more netting required for next year!) and for some reason lettuce seems to elude us, but on the whole, it has been satisfying. We are just starting to reap the rewards of our efforts and gluts of tomatoes and courgettes are threatening. There is nothing quite like going out into your garden to pick your dinner, it’s surely the most rewarding way to teach children about the benefits of eating natural, whole foods and fresh produce. This recipe started out about tomatoes and grew from there. I will of course be making it using my impending glut of fresh tomatoes soon, but it is very tasty using a tin of chopped tomatoes too. You can make quite a few of the steps of the recipe ahead of time, to make life easier; the tomato sauce improves in taste with the keeping. Choose baby new potatoes to make the roasting time quicker and the flavour sweeter, ours are terrific this year and roast very well.Using as much fresh produce as possible is also so good for your health and this is a very healthy, filling and nutritious supper, making the most of the Mediterranean way of eating - al fresco of course!Summer Produce Supper(Feeds 2-4)For the Napolitano Sauce1 red onion, finely chopped1 garlic clove, finely chopped4 sun dried tomatoes, chopped1 tin chopped tomatoes (or 2-3 handfuls of fresh tomatoes, roasted in a little oil)Tsp Italian herbs or oreganoOlive oil, or a little oil from the sun dried tomato jarA splash of balsamic vinegarTsp sugarHalf a jar of pitted black olives2 tsp red pestoTo make up the dish:3 good sized courgettes, cut into half inch round slicesA couple of handfuls of French beansBaby new potatoes (allow 5 per person)Herbs de ProvenceFresh Basil, Parmesan and Rocket to garnishStart by preheating the oven to 200°, and toss your whole baby new potatoes in a little olive oil, salt, pepper and Italian herbs. Place on a baking tray and roast for approx. 25 minutes or until cooked through.Meanwhile, gently fry your onion, garlic and sun dried tomatoes in a little oil until soft and then add a splash of balsamic vinegar, tsp sugar, tin of tomatoes, olives and a tsp of Italian herbs or oregano. Cook for a further 5 minutes and add in the red pesto, check seasoning and leave to simmer gently until you are ready to serve. Heat a griddle pan and toss the courgette slices in a little olive oil and season with salt, pepper and herbs de Provence. Griddle on both sides until cooked and slightly charred. Add to the Napolitano sauce, reserving a few for the top. Briefly steam or blanch your French beans until al dente.Assemble the dish by topping the Napolitano sauce with more courgettes, potatoes and green beans, and garnishing with basil leaves, Parmesan cheese and rocket.

HOLT AND DISTRICT PROBUS CLUBWatch Your Step!

Holt Probus Club welcomed Mr Graeme Simmonds to their meeting in July, to speak of ‘The History Beneath Your Feet’.Graeme said that in Norfolk, historical finds often lie within 200 meters of any dwelling. He brought several display cabinets of objects that he had found; amongst many other articles, he showed an axe head made from flint and about 5,000 years old and beautifully crafted. He had a number of ancient keys, including a Roman one around 2,000 years old.Graeme said that a field recently ploughed and just after rain could be a good place to look, especially for coins and pottery: articles get brought to the surface by the plough and then after the rain has washed off the surface mud they can be easier to spot. But you must get the land owner’s permission first.Graeme said that often finds are of little financial value, but it’s not what it is, but what it represents.A vote of thanks was proposed by member John Nickson for a stimulating talk.Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers Hotel in Holt.Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit, visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

THE ART DECO TRAVELLER VISITS WEYBOURNE WI

On 5th July, thirty WI members and two guests met for a lively presentation by The Art Deco Traveller, Genista Davidson.Genista wore an authentic Art Deco outfit and brought along a display of several items from her home, which is furnished and decorated in the Art Deco style.Genista is passionate about this period and has written many newspaper articles on the subject and also six books. Many of these inspired by her travels. She is also a teacher of Social History. She explained that the Art Deco period lasted from around 1918-1939 and influenced many things, not only architecture. The 1925 Exposition of Modern International and Decorative Arts, which was held in Paris, helped to spread the popularity. Genista talked of many people who were influential at this time, including Rene Lalique and Clarice Cliff. Also Oscar Deutsch, who built the first Odeon cinema in 1935. Within a year, 250 had been built. There were three popular styles of architecture during this period and Genista had many photographs showing examples of each. These included Burgh Island Hotel at Bigbury on Sea (Classic Art Deco), The Carreras Cigarette Factory in London (Egyptian Revival) and the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill on Sea (Streamline Modern). During the 1930’s the design of cars, trains and the Airstream caravan were all influenced by the Streamline Modern style. However, the Art Deco period was not actually named as such until the 1960’s.Genista is a great fan of Lidos, as these epitomise the Art Deco period and has visited many. She was recently invited to attend the re-opening of Saltdean Lido and wore one of her 20 knitted swimming outfits and a vintage swimming hat for the occasion. It was a very entertaining afternoon and the vote of thanks was given by Pauline Stickland.

PUBLIC INFORMATION SECURES SECOND PENALTY FOR DOG FOULING IN WEST RUNTON

North Norfolk District Council issues second fixed penalty notice with support from local community

A woman from Norwich has been fined £80.00 for not bagging and binning her dog’s mess. The offence took place in Water Lane, West Runton and was captured on CCTV but it was the quick thinking of local business owners that ensured there was sufficient evidence to issue a fixed penalty notice (FPN).Louise O’Shea and her partner Martin Hipkin, who run West Runton Café, witnessed the offence and took down details of the offender’s vehicle. This information, along with the footage of the offence, was given to North Norfolk District Council. This is the second fine issued this year for fouling at West Runton. The first offence took place in January and the FPN was able to be issued based on CCTV evidence and vehicle registration details provided by Louise and Martin.Louise said: “We have had an ongoing issue for a long time at West Runton beach with dog fouling. We have worked closely with NNDC over the last few months to help identify persons that allow their dogs to foul and don’t pick up. It is in everyone’s interest to do this, no-one wants to visit the beach and tread in dog poo. Whilst issuing FPNs may seem extreme, it has proven to work as a deterrent.”On 5th April three women were caught on CCTV walking a dog that fouled outside the West Runton Café. The FPN was issued to the woman in charge of the dog after she failed to pick up the dog’s poo.West Runton is one of the North Norfolk beaches patrolled daily by our Environmental Ranger, where Dog Control Orders are in place.Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the Runtons, said: “Martin and Louise have told us that to the best of their knowledge this has been the only offence since April, until just this week, and that shows how effective working together can be.Almost everyone loves dogs but not their mess, and this action sends a clear message to anyone not acting responsibly.”The offence was failure to comply with ‘The Fouling of Land by Dogs Order 2008’ and Sections 55, 56, 57 of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005More information about where dogs are allowed is on the North Norfolk District Council website and to report dog fouling please go to the website www.north-norfolk.gov.uk.

THE BEATLES, SGT PEPPER AND NORTH NORFOLKby Chris Sadler

Generally considered one of the greatest albums ever made, ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was released by The Beatles in May 1967.Apart from perhaps agreeing with that statement and thinking, “Wow, that’s 50 years ago”, you may also be wondering, “What’s that got to do with us here in North Norfolk a rural area in Eastern England?” Well, blow out your joss sticks and throw off that kaftan there is a connection; and here it is ....The famous elegant, pastel-coloured, military-style suits the Fab Four are wearing on the album sleeve cover were created in 1967 by costume designer Noel Howard, who came from a one church, four house, two donkey village called Stody, a place so tiny it would be embarrassed to call itself a hamlet. The original suits remained with the members of The Beatles and after several years some were reportedly in disrepair. Maybe because of this, and to certainly celebrate this iconic design, Yoko Ono commissioned Mr Howard to make a set of replica suits in 1999 based on the original designs.Mr Howard confirmed this later in a letter stating: “In November of 1999, I was found and contacted by Yoko Ono’s office to recreate an exact copy of the costumes, as I had done some 35 years earlier, for a museum in Japan. To ensure that I re-created perfect matching costumes, in colour (sic), fabrics and sizes, I was flown out to New York to inspect the originals, three of which were made available to me at that time. This costume is the closest any private collector will come to owning an original.” In addition Mr Howard was permitted to make a further set for his own use.A set of replica suits ‘created by Noel Howard’ (presumably those mentioned

above) were sold in a US auction for over $25,000 in 2016. Soon afterwards The Beatles Story museum in Liverpool put a ‘full set of authentic’ suits on display. It’s lovely to think these marvellous creations have finally become accessible to the public.Sadly Mr Howard died in 2008 after what must have been an eventful life. Not many people create something so iconic and well-known and, in the marvellous Sgt Pepper cover, he has a lasting and appropriate memorial. But ... there is one final local reminder ..., Mr Howard did finally come home and is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard in Stody and his gravestone is still there today.RIP Noel James Howard (1940 - 2008).

THE 7th WEYBOURNE FOLK WEEKEND

Just a few weeks to go until the local Folk event of the year.We start at 7.30pm on Friday 18th August at Weybourne Village Hall and continue through until 7.00pm on Sunday 20th August. Two Coats Colder are the main attraction on Friday night. They are creating a fine reputation in Folk circles and are visiting us prior to moving on to a much bigger event down in Suffolk. This is your opportunity to see them in far more intimate surroundings. We kick-off at 1.15pm on Saturday afternoon 19th August with local singers and musicians. Also included will be an appearance by the ‘Summer Mummers’ giving their interpretation of the ancient English Folk play. The first guest of the afternoon is Roger Gamble, native of Norfolk and an excellent performer on guitar and melodeon.Andrew Stannard follows on ukulele who will re-visit the songs of Alan Smethurst ‘The Singing Postman’. We continue with ‘Badly Worn Boys’ who perform their own material as well as classics in the Folk genre. The Old Wild Rovers from Blakeney complete the line-up with their own inimitable range of sea songs and shanties. What an afternoon! The annual Barn Dance/Ceilidh from 8.00pm until 11.00pm at the Village Hall on Saturday evening is always popular. This year’s band is ‘Blancoes Yard’. Full instructions are given by their own caller and at £6.00 it’s a real bargain. Bring your own drinks and picnic and give it a go! For the less energetic there’s another song and music session at the Maltings Hotel starting at 8.00pm.Sunday 20th August promises to be another great afternoon of Folk entertainment. We begin at 1.45pm with local singers and musicians and another appearance by the ‘Summer Mummers’. Sarah O’Neill is an amazing local fiddle player, not to be missed, as is Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer with his own brand of Folk humour. Cathy Martini from America writes her own songs, followed by ‘Five String Thing’ from Lincolnshire. Webbun All-Stars complete the proceedings for the weekend with a number of Folk classics. With this bunch of enthusiastic individuals anything can happen and probably will!Another weekend of top quality Folk entertainment and apart from the Barndance it’s all free, although we hope that the daily raffle will be well supported. We are also not averse to accepting the odd donation no matter how large.Further details, barndance tickets and a programme by e-mail can be had from Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or by email from [email protected] website is www.webbunfolkfest.com.

SHOPPING WITH A GRANDCHILD

An old man was grocery shopping with his grandson. The toddler was crying and at times, screaming at the top of his lungs. As the old gentleman walked up and down the aisles, people could hear him speaking in a soft voice..... “We are almost done, Albert...try not to cry, Albert... Life will get better, Albert...”As he approached the checkout, he carefully brushed the toddler’s tears from his eyes and said again, “Try not to cry, Albert... We will be home soon, Albert...”As he was paying the cashier, the toddler continued to cry as a young woman in line behind him said, “Sir, I think it is wonderful how sweet you are being to your little Albert.”The old gentleman blinked his eyes a couple of times before saying: “My grandson’s name is John ..... I’m Albert.

Report On Holt Town Council’s Meeting 10th JulyHolt Town Council met on 10th July for the monthly Town Council meeting. Cllr Duncan Baker chaired the meeting and reported on events throughout the last month. The Royal Norfolk Show had a Holt marquee and the Town Council had a stand in it, manned by Town Councillor volunteers Glenys Singleton and Phil Wright. Although the first day was wet they gave out leaflets and promoted Holt as the place to come. Also, he reported on the Neighbourhood Plan consultation event which was held on the 24th June. This was a well-attended event with lots of comments and questions. These are being analysed at the moment and we will have the results shortly so we can go onto the next stage of getting a Neighbourhood Plan for Holt. Lastly, he reported that we have had a good response to the Holt Owl trail. Traders are beginning to donate towards this and we are hoping to have some stickers on the pavement showing how the trail will look. This will be a trial run for the trail and should be in place for the Festival week. The Police had sent a report in to the Council and we were pleased to see that some youths have been dealt with regarding criminal damage and we are awaiting some court appearances.County Councillor Butifoker reported that she, along with Town Councillor members, are looking at the site for the new school. The Town Council still believes the better site for the community is at the bottom of Lodge Close, referred to as the Gladman site. They are continuing to push for that site. Cllr Butifoker also reported that Holt fire station is not being cut and the Holt fire service crew are not expected to attend cardiac arrests, unlike some other stations. Grants were duly awarded as follows to Holt Community groups, there will be another round of funding at the end of the year, if anyone missed the boat on this occasion. Holt CAB £ 350.00Holt Playing Fields Association £1200.00Holt 1960s Club £ 400.00 Holt Friday Club £ 400.00Whyfy newly formed youth group £ 25.77It was good news that work has begun on the Gresham’s car park and the site foreman has also realised the problems with traffic going through the town and has taken steps to reduce it. After much debate and comment from the public it was agreed not to support the NWT in carrying out a wildlife survey on Spout Common. Residents are very proud of this area and the volunteers were very definite in wanting to carry out the management by themselves. The Town Council agreed to purchase light weight road barriers for street events throughout the year, this would cover the Remembrance Poppy parade, the Christmas lights, the 1940s weekend and so on. It was also agreed that the Town Council will not record meetings in the future as the signed minutes are the record of the meeting. The next Town Council meeting is on 14th August 2017 at 7.00pm in the Community Centre.

THE WOLTERTON EXTRAVAGANTSpectacular Norfolk event to raise funds for Ethiopia charity

‘Extraordinary venue’ hosts event for Norfolk-based charity bringing hope to thousands Take one of Norfolk’s great country houses, currently enjoying a multi-million pound renaissance. Add a Norfolk-based charity that’s bringing hope to thousands in Ethiopia. Add a group of dedicated volunteers determined to create an unforgettable event that will raise thousands for the cause. And you have The Wolterton Extravagant. Why ‘Extravagant’? “Because it’s going to be different, special and, we hope, extraordinary,” says Sue Mumford, chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK, the charity organising The Wolterton Extravagant. As patron of the event, Lady Dannatt MBE will be there. She says, “Ethiopia has a population of around 100 million, but only one hospice:

Hospice Ethiopia. Its staff work tirelessly to deliver care to the dying. However, what’s really important is the training Hospice Ethiopia is conducting, so that other medics can help many thousands of desperate people, and their families. This is an extraordinary venue for what we hope will be an extraordinary event to support an extraordinary charity.” The Wolterton Extravagant will include a champagne reception, three-course buffet meal, an auction and live music, both classical and rock. There will also be a bar and lots of other entertainments, including the opportunity to buy G&T using the official ‘best gin in the world’, courtesy of Bullards of Norwich. Wolterton Hall was recently sold by the Walpole family to Keith Day and Peter Sheppard (pictured left, with Sue Mumford), who are currently restoring it to its former glories. When they heard about the idea for an event for Hospice Ethiopia, they were only too happy to offer the Hall. “It’s an amazing building with a wealth of history and beautiful rooms and grounds, including a fabulous marble ballroom,” says Sue. “The restoration is bringing it all back to life, making it the perfect venue for a spectacular event. We’re so grateful to Peter and Keith.”The Wolterton Extravagant takes place on 16th September 2017, 7.30pm till midnight, and tickets cost £50.00, which includes champagne and food. For more information and to buy tickets visit hospiceethiopia.org.uk or contact Clare Glenn, 01263 734853 or [email protected]

CONCERT BY TALI DOLCE MUSIC ATST. ANDREW’S CHURCH, LETHERINGSETT:

24th JUNEThe five musicians of Tali Dolce Musica, whose name translates as ‘Such Sweet Music’, form an unusual combination of skills – bringing together soprano (Meg Starling), flute (Anna Hopkins), oboe and cor anglais (Neil Johnson), bassoon (Ian Summers) and piano and organ (David Morgan). They could easily concentrate on duets, the players performing two at a time, but it’s almost as though they think that would be very dull. So, they will sometimes play their own five-part arrangements of well-known pieces, like Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, with which they began. But more often than not, they will discover rare pieces written for an unexpected group of players, like the Trio, one of six for flute, oboe and bassoon, by an 18th century composer called Giuseppe Cambini, which they performed with great panache. Or they may play pieces originally composed for one instrument, but played on another, Richard Strauss’s Nocturne, for example, written for the French horn, but which Neil Johnson played on the cor anglais, which, though its name means ‘the English horn’, is actually neither English or a horn. No problem whatsoever, it sounded wonderful, as did another of the group’s discoveries, from an obscure opera by an equally obscure Italian composer called Antonio Caldara. This gave the soprano Meg Starling, accompanied by flute and keyboard, the chance to display her great vocal skills, for here was an aria, and a demanding one at that, depicting a nightingale in full song.Tali Dolce Musica have already promised to come back toSt Andrew’s next year. By then, I’m sure, they will have added many more surprises to their box of musical delights. Michael Brunson

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILWHAT IS IN THE BIBLE

There is philosophy, myths and lies in the bible, and the greatest of these is philosophy. There is philosophy in both the old and new testaments for those who can perceive it. There are myths in both testaments, obvious, to those who take the trouble to study Jewish history, those who don’t, simply take the falseness of the myths to be true, the bible is not true Jewish history. The saints were not evil people, but there are lies in the bible, the New Testament excels in this, someone once wrote: “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone.” (Revelation 21:8). Yet if Revelation was composed by one person, that person composed a book of falsehood, one of the worst in the world. And so what is called a Holy Book (the bible) is nothing of the kind and, Christian teachers are aware of this, hence their silence on the subject. For more secrets see our book the SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice, and Grave’s Stores, Briston, price £4.50.

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWSLife is still good here at the Day Centre where we are enjoying ourselves with trips out or even staying in and enjoying games, quizzes and chats.Derek and Margaret Cattermull once again showed us an interesting film, this time about Scotland and Mick Leary had us singing and dancing (and laughing at his awful jokes!) when he played his Yamaha keyboard. We had a lovely morning at Blickling Hall where we enjoyed a coffee and a scone and last week we went out in our minibus to St. Andrews Church in Sheringham to the Flower Festival, where the displays were beautiful. On another day, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Bell, Cawston, where they always go out of their way to make us very welcome. If you think you would like to do these things too then how about booking a ‘taster’ session with us? You don’t have to be lonely, or in need of care or even live on your own (couples are welcome too), but if you are of retirement age and would like to give us a try just ‘phone either Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday between 9.30am and 2.30pm on 01263 861120 and we can tell you all about our wonderful centre and all the lovely things we get up to!

DESIGN A POSTCARD FOR SHERINGHAM COMPETITION

Sheringham Primary School and Beeston Hall School were asked if they would like to make an entry for this competition. It was organised by ‘Fairtrade for Sheringham’ and supported by Sheringham Carnival Committee. The children worked extremely hard and produced some excellent and very interesting pictures. It was very difficult to judge and to choose just two winners, one up to Year 3 and the other for years 4 to 6. In fact several Highly Commended entries were chosen as well. The joint winners for the older group are Alfie Regent and Archie Waring (above) and for the younger group Naomi Perrott (below). All the entries will be displayed in our

two supermarkets, Sainsbury and Tesco. The two winning entries can be bought at the Carnival Caravan, near the Town Clock.Brenda Smith (Fairtrade for Sheringham)

11th ANNUALBRIT’S CHARITY CRICKET MATCH

This year’s match is on Sunday 30th July at Holt Sports Centre, Kelling Road, Holt NR25 6TX, starting at 1.00pm. The match will be contested between the former Railway Tavern Pub Cricket team and the Too Old and Non- Selectables. There will be a BBQ, teas and coffees with a choice of cakes, plus the bar will be open all afternoon. As usual there will also be a large raffle and other stalls. This will be the 11th year of Brit’s cricket match having raised over £13,000 in that time. We are a small group of friends who, when Brit died, decided to remember him with these matches and quizzes giving all the funds raised to local charities, groups and clubs.Last year we donated a bench in memory of Brit, (below with Brit’s mother, Brenda) which is in the Memorial Gardens on Albert Street. We also donated money to five other groups.Everyone is welcome to come and join us. If cricket isn`t your thing, why not just come and join us for a social get together or for a cup of tea and a piece of cake.

BROADLAND CHESS CLUBLife at the Broadland Chess Club is usually very slow during the summer months. In the previous report I said that the club would only be open on Mondays, however due to members holidays and other commitments there will be no club nights now until Monday 4th September. However, anyone who wants further information or who is interested in joining the club will be able to contact us via the usual methods of Facebook/Twitter or our website. From September the club will also be hosting a special league, ‘The Friendly League’, for those players who are graded under 100. This will give those lower graded players and Juniors a chance to shine. The in-house tournaments are now finished, with the final of the Broadland Chess Club Championship actually taking place in my dining room and very tense it was too. Roy Hughes versus Ken McEwan, the house had to be quiet, no dogs barking, TV’s off etc. After an exciting couple of hours Roy was deemed to be the winner and claimed the trophy.3rd July saw the club’s AGM and the presentation of the cups. Above, Roy Hughes (right) is presented with his club champion trophy by David Owen. Other trophies presented were to Bruce Carmen, winner of the 2nd Division trophy and Adrian Cornell winner of the 3rd Division. On 4th July the annual John Scott Memorial Blitz was held at the Norwich High School for Girls. Each player has 5 minutes on the clock in which to defeat his opponent, there were seven rounds to play and Roy Hughes from Broadland also claimed the title here.

BLAKENEY ROWING CLUB GOES TO ESSEX

To have fun when skiff rowing is a clear priority, even when racing. Two recent events have shown this.On Saturday, 24th June, a crew from Blakeney competed in a race around Osea Island in Essex. Hoi Larntan, one of the club’s two boats (right), was the chosen craft and she set off, amongst twenty-five other craft, to complete the seven-mile course in a very creditable time. Conditions were varied and rowers had to pull hard before gliding past the finishing post. The great hospitality of Stone Sailing and Rowing Club was much appreciated and the camaraderie amongst the rowing community was clearly in evidence. It was a truly great day The other event was the Round Canvey Island Row which took place on Saturday 8th July. There were around twenty oar propelled boats participating. Hoi Larntan was again to the fore and the crew consisted of three Blakeney rowers and two members of the King’s Lynn Coastal Rowing Club. It was great to join with enthusiasts from a neighbouring club to talk about boats and oars. Rowing styles were swiftly and efficiently blended and the skiff completed the fourteen-mile course in fine style. The event organisation and the post row hospitality of Benfleet Sailing Club completed another hugely enjoyable day.Of course, there is no need to race in a skiff. The main purpose is to enjoy good company on the water. You can certainly do this in Blakeney. No previous experience, or wish to compete, is necessary. If you are interested, phone Steve on 01263 741388 to arrange an outing. Take the chance to be part of it all! You will be looked after. Barry Howes.

GRESHAM’SCLAY SHOOTING STARS

Gresham’s Clay Shooting Club members have been crowned National Cadet Clay Target Shooting Champions at the annual National Championships in Cambridge and have returned to school with no less than seven trophies. The team, Kees Jones, James Matthews, Theo Rossi, Mark Heath, Will Pointer, Archie Jones, Billy Addison and Joe Kooreman, took the top prize and added to it by achieving a clean sweep; winning every single team discipline against 32 of the best shooting schools and teams in the country. Phenomenally, the A team took first place in the Sporting, Down the Line and the Flush disciplines, the first ever Gresham’s team to achieve such success.

As a result, the A team won gold in the overall CCF high team award and won the Garman Shield for beating all Army Cadet Force (ACF), Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Royal Air Force Cadet (ATC) teams.Sixth Form pupils, Kees Jones and James Matthews took individual honours. Kees won the silver medal for individual high gun and gold in the CCF sporting high gun and James won gold in the individual Down the Line discipline after a shoot off for first place.Eight members of the team went on to represent UK CCFs against UK ACFs and again they ran out on top winning gold in both the Skeet and Flush disciplines.Team coach, Mr Charlie Mack said: “Winning seven trophies is an absolutely amazing achievement and I could not be prouder of the team. It was an historic moment that will take some beating! Each member of the team was a great ambassador for Gresham’s and they looked incredibly smart in their new skeet vests, received as a kind gift from the Flux family.”

HOLT CRICKET CLUBGooderstone C.C. vs Holt C.C.

Holt 114 lost to Gooderstone 119-4 by six wicketsHolt’s poor season continues as they lost by six wickets

away at Gooderstone. Holt won the toss and chose to bat first. Chapman and Thaxter added 30 for the first wicket, before Thaxter (6) was run out. Collyer joined Chapman, and they put on 17, before Chapman (26) was caught. Collyer and Baker added 11 for the third wicket, before Collyer (15) was bowled. With Baker (8) also being bowled Holt then slumped from 83-4 to 85-7. J Rutterford and Mears then provided quick runs for Holt towards the end of the innings, adding 25 for the eighth wicket, before J Rutterford (13) was out lbw. Mears was the last wicket to go for 10 man Holt when he was caught and bowled for a creditable 17, meaning Holt were all out for 114. After the interval, Holt got off to a great start, with an early wicket for Thaxter (1-17). A second wicket partnership of 43 was brought to an end by Collyer when A Buttle took his second catch. Collyer (2-20) took his second wicket when Thaxter took a catch at mid on, to leave Gooderstone 52-3. But after Chaney (1-27) took Holt’s fourth wicket an unbroken 48 run partnership completed the six wicket victory.

CO-ORDINATED SEAWATCH EVENTOn Tuesday 8th August between 6.30am and 9.30am there will be six watch points along a 20 mile stretch of coast to record the passage of birds during this three hour period. We’ll need lots of volunteers to help us both identify and record the birds we’re seeing at Weybourne Camp, Sheringham, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley and Happisburgh. The NENBC is a friendly and sociable local bird club spanning an area from Briston and Melton Constable to Happisburgh and Holt, Cromer and Sheringham through North Walsham to Aylsham. From September to July we run monthly bird walks, monthly weekend walks and monthly evening talks with refreshments on the last Thursday of the month and extended social events all at Aylmerton Village Hall.Members and non-members of any level of birding experience are welcome at all our events and so are children if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. For full details see www.nenbc.co.uk or email [email protected].

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

We live near a beautiful beach that’s very popular with families. Visitors are asked to grade the local attractions on our tourist website, and we were surprised when one person gave the beach a low rating. The reason? “This beach is no good for children. When we visited, it was under three feet of water.”Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to explain the tides to him.My son’s girlfriend ended their relationship after she found out that he’d been unfaithful. She returned some of his post, and I had to smile when I saw what she’d written on the envelope: “Second Class Male.”As a keen photographer, I was very nervous to be doing my first wedding. When I arrived with my husband (also my assistant), it dawned on us that we’d gone to the wrong venue. In a panic, we bolted out of the building, my husband in the lead and me trailing behind, nearly in tears. As we fled, I heard one of the security guards remark, “That ceremony didn’t go too well.”A friend of mine who’s looking lor a new house was telling me about a property she’d just seen.“It’s completely derelict,” she complained. “For a start, you’d have to get rid of that rotten old conservative at the back.”My two-year-old son was ‘helping’ his dad in the garden until he was sent inside. I asked him what he’d done.“I’ve been picking the bloody flowers, Mummy,” he replied.

LOCAL POLICE NEWSOFFICERS INVESTIGATING RAM RAID

IN WELLSPolice are investigating following a ram raid at a supermarket in Wells on Monday 17th July. A JCB teleporter has been driven into a wall at the Co-op store on Polka Road sometime between 2.50am and 3.00am. Suspects have then used the teleporter to remove the cash machine from within the building before loading it onto a 4x4 truck, which has fled the scene. Officers believe a dark coloured hatchback vehicle was also used and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed either incident, or anyone with information. They should contact DS Andy Garner or DC Sam Harris at Norfolk Constabulary on 101. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
