This has been a busy period for the State Match Committee Pam Hockings, Robyn Lewis andJennifer Palmer. A write up is to be found page 16 with photos as well. Thank you to Robyn Bellfrom Old Bar Beach for your skill with the camera and the dinner was great fun.

At Taren Point during June, the NSW team under the management of Daphne Shaw won theAshes this year from Queensland and Daphne was delighted with the effort put in by all the teammembers including the Under 25’s. The next day I went to Crescent Head where I metwith five of the eight lady members of the Country Club. This was the first visit in that area to clubs with less than11 members. It was lovely discussing with the ladies theproblems they have by being such a small club and assur-ing them of the Association’s support. I thank PresidentCarol Wright and her ladies for a lovely afternoon.

Thank you to Noelene Harvey and Barbara Hazeltinefor representing at Chester Hill’s President’s Day and 50thBirthday. They reported that they had a lovely day. Thatsame day, May 24, Wauchope held their 60th Birthday. What a great day this was – the club is in the grounds ofa beautiful golf course and the view during lunch waswonderful. A very big “Thank You” to President Jutta Halland her ladies for a most enjoyable day and for thewarmth of the friendship. The next day I visited anothersmall club in the mountains. Comboyne ladies are few innumber but very big in hospitality. President Esme Pharoahand her dedicated members made me very welcome. Thatafternoon I travelled to the Lansdowne club and met withtheir small number of members. President Evelyn Morrisonand her ladies had prepared a feast for our get togetherand I’m sure I put on 2kgs that day. But what a lot of lovely ladies who are battling to keep their respective clubopen. All members do committee work at some stage oranother and you couldn’t meet a happier group.

On May 26 I left Wauchope to go across to Port

winners of the pairs – Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow) andJamie-Lee Worsnop (SJP), and the Silver to Jess Cousley(Wagga RSL) and Tracey-Lee Swift (Goulburn Railway).

During June our CEO Heather Welch informed us thatshe and her family would be relocating to Singapore mid-July. This meant a search for a new CEO. Interviewswere held and on June 26, Nicky Bethwaite joined theAssociation as CEO. It was very sad to see Heather leaveus after just on 5 years, as she had contributed markedlyto the Association’s new direction, and was a pleasure towork with. A farewell luncheon was held and Directors,Committees and staff alike wished Heather and her familyall the very best in their new life. We are indeed fortunateto have Nicky on board, as her background in managing a sporting organisation will make it easier for her to assimilate. We look forward to a long and happy association with Nicky.

On July 8 the Association had news that FinanceDirector Barbara Holden was very ill, and had been takento a Private Hospital where she will remain for some 2-3weeks. Best wishes from everyone here at Head Office goto Barbara with the hope that she recovers quickly.

The Association is looking forward to meeting a largenumber of ladies at the various Strategic Forums. TheseForums are for the purpose of information gathering fromour member players and it is hoped that as many as possible will attend on Sunday August 12 at Tuncurry BC.It was very disappointing that the Association had to cancel the Strategic Forum to be held on July 25 becauseof lack of numbers. There were only 20 people interestedin the Metro area Forum. These people had their moniesrefunded. This is your opportunity to contribute so that theAssociation has the right information to plan its future.

risk management process. For example, your coach has the knowledge foranswering questions on risk in coachingand training while your administrator will understand risk in the office environment.

Managing risk may seem daunting. To make the process easier, break therisk management process into achievable steps by following this process:

by Heather Welch and Nicky Bethwaite [email protected]

Managing Riskin Bowls

NSWWBA has implemented manypolicies and procedures to lower

the chances of any risks that are preventable. The Board has developedthese policies to ensure theAssociation is looking out for themembers of NSWWBA Inc. Examplesof policies that have been implem-ented for the decrease of risks areExtreme Weather, MembershipProtection, Selection Process,Finance, Social Media, Code of Ethics,Medical Indemnity and many more.

NSW Communities definition of RiskManagement is the course of actiontaken to reduce potential legal liability. Itseeks to address potential problemsbefore they occur.

Risk management aims to be pro-active rather than reactive – creatinga safer environment and legally saferoperational procedures. A common mistake clubs make is to view risk management as a program in isolation. It is really an ongoing process thatshould be applied to all clubs’ policiesand procedures.

Benefits of Risk Management inBowls

Potential benefits and opportunitiesfor implementing effective risk manage-ment procedures are:

• improved safety for participants, officials, spectators and volunteers

• lower costs and increased budgetcertainty

• more effective management ofassets, events, programs and activities

• improved compliance with the law, regulations and other formalrequirements

• enhanced image and reputation.

The above lead to better bowling outcomes.

Risks facing Women’s BowlingClubs

Some general risks that could applyto your bowls club include:

• providing no training for volunteers• unsafe equipment and facilities

• not having adequate policies andprocedures in place

• age demographic• not having accredited (NCAS/

NOAS) Coaches and umpires• medical consensus as members/

next of kin (when travelling for theclubs)

• not adhering to membership protection policies

• not adhering to the Association andClub policies

• not understanding the financialposition of the Club and expendi-ture of money especially in a management committee or payingout incorrect travel and expenses

• no emergency evacuation plan • no emergency medical plan• playing in extreme weather

conditions • inadequate or inappropriate insurance at the registered Clubthat doesn’t cover your players, officials, volunteers or Women’sBowling Club activities

• the club not requiring participantsto sign a waiver or release formprior to participating.

How to manage risk in BowlingClubs

All key people, including board members, management and volunteersshould be involved in every step of the

Step 1 Identify risks

Step 2 Assess each risk

Step 3 Treat your risks

Step 4 Develop a risk policy (adoptthe NSWWBA policy)

Step 5 Communicate, and ongoingmonitoring and review

5 Steps in Risk Management Process

Risk management checklist• Appoint a risk manager –

responsible for the risk management process

• Identify ‘key’ people (ie. headcoach, event manager, financedirector) who will be involved inmanaging risk

• Determine the club’s risk management context

• Identify risks – what can happen, why and how?

• Analyse risks• Evaluate risks• Design a risk elimination and

reduction plan• Implement the plan• Develop and implement a clear

communication strategy on riskmanagement

• Communicate the strategies to allappropriate levels of the club

• Ensure the board addresses riskmanagement periodically as ameeting agenda item

• Monitor and review strategies atleast annually and report to theboard through the risk manager

• Ensure the board has adopted andimplemented a risk managementpolicy.

InsuranceIn the ever-increasing world of

litigation, the requirement for sport andrecreation organisations to have appropriate insurance has become anessential part of survival. It is vital yourclub protects its assets with adequateinsurance.

Risk management toolInsurance is a common risk

management tool, which may be usedto minimise your club’s liability. However, insurance is a reactive rather than a pro-active risk management tool. Otherrisk management strategies should beadopted in order to reduce the risk fromoccurring in the first place.

Examples of legal claims/risks sporting organisations are exposed to:

• Negligence claims – eg. personalinjury or decisions made

• Criminal liability – including claimsfor sexual offences and discrimination

• Occupier’s liability• Occupational health and safety• Employment liability – eg. unfair

dismissals.

ADHESIVE STICKERS ON BOWLSWith State Playoffs in Pennants and

Championships fast approaching thequestion of adhesive stickers on bowlshas once again come up.

As previously advised, when teamsare competing at either the Pennantplayoffs or State Championships, theyare representing their Club, even thoughthey have won through at District andRegional level. Club stickers, or thoseprovided by the State when required, should be the only ones used.

The Law which covers adhesivestickers is Law 8.1.8 in the Crystal Mark2nd Edition, Laws of the Sport of Bowls.

On the recommendation of the StateMatch Committee, District Stickersshould only be used for a selectedDistrict Representative Side competingin an Inter-District Game.

Dear EditorWe would like to thank the State and

all the organisers who put together awonderful week of bowls at PortMacquarie in May/June.

Unfortunately they couldn’t controlthe weather, however the event ransmoothly, the venues and bowlinggreens were first rate, the food wasgood and the competition excellent.

Congratulations to all concerned andwe certainly look forward to the StateCarnival 2013.

Olga Hyde (Alder Park Bowling Club)

Lesley Szumylo (Neutral Bay)

recommended, that with the shorteningof games for Club and DistrictChampionships in 2013, ControllingBodies for these events consider playingtwo games per day on some, if not allplaying days of their events to have theevent finishing quicker and thereby freeing up more time in an already congested Calendar, for players andalso the organizers.

Please note:This change does not come into

effect until Championships commence in2013 and games played under the current Conditions of Play forAssociation events are not affected forthe remainder of 2012.

Any Club or District that has constructive feedback they would likeconsidered when the Conditions of Playfor Association events (Blue Book) andPennants are reviewed later this year, are invited to submit them to the MatchOffice, with a rationale as to how anychange would benefit Bowls across theState.

The Match Committee is always opento reasonable discussion on improvingConditions and guidelines where thegame can be better organized and conducted fairly, for all competitorsStatewide.

Continued

Thank you ladies, it is always great tohear that members felt it was a success. The Match Committee, CEO, Officestaff, Directors and members of theoperational committees as well as thebowling clubs, council and the managers and staff of the accommo-dation venues go into making this carnival, the great success it is.

Let us not forget the bowling fraternity, some of whom told me, theyhad never missed a carnival. We lookforward to seeing you down south nextyear.

The Editor

Reading all the information provided:

When the Draw is published and distributed for any State event, it comeswith Conditions of Play and a Scheduleof Play. These may be separate documents or on the one page. All theinformation necessary for players inthese events is contained in these documents, and if read carefully will prevent unnecessary phone calls to theOffice for answers already provided inthese pages.

CHANGES for 2013At a recent Board Meeting, a

recommendation was put forward from

the Match Committee to bring NSW

WBA into line with the rest of the States

and Territories in amending the length of

games.

Approval was given for the following:

Singles – 25 shots upPairs and Triples –18 endsPairs will still be four bowls –

2 x 2 x 2 x 2Triples 3 bowls.

At this time the length of the foursgame and Pennants is still beingreviewed and any change in this formatwill be advised in due course.

It is suggested and strongly

Members are invited to submit letters of general interest for publication. These should be concise, constructive and bear the name and club of thewriter. Any letters printed will express the views of the individual and notnecessarily reflect the opinion of the Association.

3.4) BA reiterated our stance that: “Ascorecard should be kept and completedby the skip of each team”.

The second sentence of DR3.4 wasadded stating: “If there is no scoreboardattendant available, the skips betweenthem should keep the scoreboard updatedat least every second end”. Although it isnot mentioned anywhere in the Laws whocan turn the scoreboard, this sentencewas included to provide advice and guidance (typically for pennant matches) toensure that the scoreboard would matchthe official recording of the game – thescorecard.

After consultation with World Bowls onthis matter, the working of the DR will bereviewed at the next Law review. In theinterim, it is the NOC’s determination thatas the “scoreboard attendant” can be anyperson appointed by either the controllingbody, team manager or the host venue. Therefore, the scoreboard at the end ofeach rink or the ‘main board’ can beadjusted by any player whether they areinvolved in the game or a volunteer.

It is then up to the skips to ensure thatthe scorecards and the individual rinkscoreboard are aligned at least every second end (when skips are at the score-board end). BA Memorandum, May 112012.

Law 36 Position of PlayersLaw 36.1 In relation to the rink of play.36.1.1 Players at the mat-end of the

36.2.3 If a rink of play is an outside rink(see law 5.6) a player shouldneither go into nor walk alongthe section of green that liesbetween the outside boundaryof the rink and the side ditchwhile an opponent is about todeliver or is actually delivering abowl.

Walking SticksIt is not necessary for players using a

walking stick on the green to seek permission to use one.

A player who has a physical disabilitywill be allowed to use a support or an artificial limb (or both) when delivering thejack or a bowl, or when walking on thegreen. The support should have a basecovered with rubber or a similar material. This base should measure at least 76mmacross, and it can be placed on or next tothe mat. Law 38.5

Chocking the JackThe National Officiating Committee

does not condone chocking the jack. The practice of chocking the jack

during the process of determining the shotis not permitted under any circumstancesin Australia. Extract from BAMemorandum, August 2011.

DR3.4 Use of a ScoreboardThere have been some queries recently

regarding who is entitled to turn a score-board now that World Bowls have decreedthe skip must keep the scorecard.

By way of background and as per Law17 in the Laws of the Sport of Bowls,Crystal Mark Second Edition, MNA’s (inthis case Bowls Australia) have the opportunity to make domestic regulations(DR’s) on a range of laws and BowlsAustralia (BA) has included an explanationon each allowable law in the DR’s.

Law 37.1.8 – Allows a domestic regulation regarding the use of a score-board instead of using one of the score-cards. This is very prevalent in SouthAfrica, where they don’t require both skipsto keep a scorecard and instead use onescorecard and one scoreboard.

As BA doesn’t allow this way of scoringin Australia, in the domestic regulation (DR

rest in the ditch.27.1.2 It is not a toucher and rebounds

onto the rink after contact withthe face of the bank or with thejack or a toucher in the ditch.

27.1.3 After completing its originalcourse or after being moved asa result of play, it comes to restat a distance of less than 14metres, as measured in astraight line, from the centre ofthe mat line to the nearest pointof the bowl.

The Law reads: Position of bowl in relation to the jack.Jack High or jack level: the nearest part

of a bowl is in line with and at the samedistance from the mat line as the nearestpart of the jack.

These positions are shown in that orderin Figures 1, 2, 3.

Note that, as previously, the exact position of Jack High is when the nearestportion of the bowl is exactly at an imaginary line drawn at right angles to thecentre line, and parallel to the mat line, atthe nearest point of the Jack to the matline.

Remember that if any portion of thebowl cuts this line, no matter how little, itis not Jack High but Short of Jack High. Both bowls in Figure 3 are Short of JackHigh .

Coaching Report

Meet the Staff

Kathy Chatillon [email protected]

Choosing new bowls is like choos-ing a new car, there are so many

on the market with many differentfeatures. You need to take your timeand do your research, choosing whatis right for you is so important for theenjoyment of the game.

New bowlers look to the coach forguidance as to the type of bowl bestsuited for them, they often receive somuch advice from all and sundry. Don’tgo past using older bowls. With thesebowls the beginner can develop anunderstanding of draw.

The experienced player may be considering a change, they too will lookfor guidance.

Some player’s particularly intern-ational or elite players have several setsof bowls for varying conditions of play.Their experience helps these players toaccommodate the subtle changes in thebowls.

When considering the purchase ofbowls new or used, bowlers need toconsider such things as size, weight, bias and grip.

SIZE IS RIGHTYou as a club coach are a key

resource in this decision. Sizes rangefrom 00 to 5 with weightings from1215g to 1570g. Commonly the largerthe bowl the heavier it is as against a

The office of NSW Women’s BowlsAssociation has sadly said goodbye

to Heather Welch, who after 5 yearsas CEO has relocated to Singapore toaccompany her husband in an excitingcareer move. I’m sure those of youwho know Heather will wish her well.

Heather’s replacement as CEO isNicky Bethwaite. Nicky grew up on theNorth Shore of Sydney, and learnt to sailat Northbridge Sailing Club. Her sailingcareer spanned several decades, andincluded winning State, National andWorld Championships. Nicky was part ofthe first female sailing crew to representAustralia at the 1988 Seoul Olympics andafter a break of several years, shecoached at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics

New Bowls — which ones to choosesmaller bowl. However the smaller bowlis often offset by choosing a heavyweight.

You need to feel comfortable andconfident with what you have chosen

The grip should allow you to hold the bowl during the delivery withoutdropping the bowl. Make sure the bowlis not grasped too snug in the hand. Toosnug a grip prevents a smooth delivery.

Once you feel you have got a comfortable hold, turn your hand upsidedown noting how it feels. Then swingyour arm back, do you feel any strain orpain in this action if so try a different sizeor weight.

CHOOSING THE BIASAs you watch others play, take note

of how different bowls perform. Everybowl has a curve some more pronounced than others. Ask yourcoach to assist you in the choice bestsuited to you. Ask the club coach toborrow a set of bowls if available.

Visit bowls retail outlets many ofwhom will allow you to try before youbuy. Together with coaches, bowlingshops will often be only too pleased toallow players to practice with theirbowls. Some shops have an indoor areato try the bowls.

PLAYING SURFACEA key determinant in choosing what

type of bowl to consider is where youwill be bowling. The green surface willmake a difference – it will affect theamount of bias needed to achieve agood result.

Coaches should make the playeraware of the speed of the green and thetype of playing surfaces so as to providethe best advice for that play.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECTAfter choosing this lovely set of new

bowls the new bowler will be keen toget going; the experience player however should start in the off season.

The new bowls will take time andmany days of practice to adjust to notonly a new turning point but also a newaiming line. To help with this adjustmentplace a marker where your old bowlsbegin to turn, then using your newbowls aim at that point and note the dif-ference. Practice to this new point tothis new aiming point.

Allow sufficient time for the brain toaccommodate this change and bodymuscles to adjust.

Don’t go past the many resourcesavailable on the internet that explain thedifference in the bowls, how each hasthat something special to entice you tobuy.

Finally do your research, talk withyour coach and try before you buy.

State Event

On June 13-14, the NSW StateSide and Under 25 girls playeda three Test Series against

Queensland. This was held at TarenPoint Bowling Club, in conjunctionwith the NSW Men’s and Under 25’s.

Unfortunately Sydney had beenreceiving unseasonably high rainfall andthe prospect of completing the serieswas not looking good. Practice day wasrain interrupted but it held off for most ofthe next 2 days.

Showers dampened the Greens forthe 1st Test, but not the enthusiasm ofthe players. Karen Murphy was drawnagainst fellow Australian representative,Linsey Armitage and at the half waymark, scores were 12-12. Four on the18th end gave Queensland a two shotadvantage, but two’s on the next threeends sealed the win for NSW 22-18.

Kelsey Cottrell on the next rinkappeared to have the measure of TracyFoster (Queensland) when leading 19-11on the 14th end; however theQueensland team made a late rally to godown by 1 shot. The rink skipped byNatasha Van Eldik had a steady leadthroughout the game but a six on the16th end really clinched victory for them21-15.

NSW won the 1st Test 70-54.

Thesetwo teams finished ahead of the Cottrellvs. Armitage game, with a 10 shot leadoverall to NSW. The scores on this rinkwere locked 15-15 with 6 ends to playand Lynsey Armitage in devastatingform. However Kelsey Cottrell was ableto add a vital 2 shots on the last end, aloss of seven in the game, but moreimportantly, a 3 shot win for NSW onthe big scoreboard.

This gave NSW a 2 nilunbeatable result with oneTest to play. All 3 teams wonthat Test.

The U-25 girls played Singles, Pairs, and Triples in eachTest, rotating positions so they played a different posi-tion each game of the series. Queensland were off to a

good start in the 1st Test, winning both the Pairs andTriples comfortably. Naomi Elliot gave NSW a win in thesingles, unfortunately not enough to give us a test win.

The 2nd Test was much closer, Naomi skipped the Triples toa win and Angela Tindall was narrowly defeated in the Singles.Once again, a 2-1 win to Queensland.

The 3rd Test almost went our way, with Lisa Mitchell winningthe Singles and Naomi going down 17-20 in the Pairs. Overalla great effort from these girls, our bowlers of the future.

Queensland were a polished outfit and deserved their win.I'm sure the experience in this series will give positive resultsfor this young group of bowlers in the future.

The Boys Singles clash was onceagain one of high quality with Wilson onceagain just pipping Skinner, 21-15. NSWBoys Fours team of Corey Wedlock, BillyJohnson, Luke Jones and Ben Glassoncontinued their form of the previous dayby recording another strong fours win 22-10. With the Boys Pairs team beingdefeated 31-14 by the strong Qld combination of Wilson and Sean Ingham, the Triples needed a victory to keep theseries alive and the combination ofWedlock, Jones and Glasson fell agonisingly short finishing level with Qld’sNic Gosley, Braidan Leese and Joel Leese17-17.

The final session of the day and thestart of the Third Test saw the NSW Girlscontinue in the dominant style while theBoys continued in the fighting spirit all theway until the end. The Girls claimed thePairs 19-8 and the Triples 15-11 while theQld boys claimed their Pairs encounter20-12 and Triples 14-10.

With both series having already beenwon heading into the last days play mostwould have expected a laid backapproach by both sides but both NSWand Qld sides showed the spirit and

ability that have earned them state representation.

In the final matches of the series NSWGirls recorded a 26-10 victory in the Fourswhile Qld hit back in the Singles claiminga 21-15 victory. The NSW Boys foughthard with two close matches to finish theseries, Singles resulted in a 21-19 victoryto Qld and the Fours also went Qld’s way14-10.

The Final Series results were NSWGirls claiming their series 3-0 and the QldBoys claiming their series 3-0. With manydebutants among the NSW side andsome new faces also in the Queenslandside, it was a credit to all players involvedwith the quality of bowls played and theperformances by all through the threedays play.

The series was definitely a great stepping stone for both states on theircampaign towards the 2012 AustralianJunior Championships in Launceston,Tasmania during the first week of October.

2012 NSW Under 18Girls Singles and PairsThe 2012 NSW Under 18 GirlsChampionships were sponsored by Illawarra Zone 16and played at Windang BowlingClub between July 5-8.

The event began with the singles onThursday 5 July when 3 sectional roundswere played in wet, miserable conditions. The players were unperturbed and playedon regardless, thankfully the weatherimproved for the remaining three days.

There were seven sections, with theseven section winners proceeding to thequarter finals along with a ‘wild card’granted to the next best performed player.

Jena Mileto took control of her quarterfinal against Sam Noronha taking thematch 21-7. Tayla Conway had a grandbattle edging out Dawn Hayman 21-19.Molly Wilton played consistently to win herquarter final 21-16 over Jamie LeeWorsnop.

The fourth quarter final saw JasmineKew matched up against Keeley McGuire.Kew scored the wildcard, while McGuiresecured the section with a 21-20 thirdover Kew. The quarter final, however, belonged to Kew with another narrowresult, 21-19.

Molly Wilton scored a convincing 21-10 victory over Jasmine Kew in the semifinal, securing the victory with consistentdrawing. Jena Mileto and Tayla Conwayhad a good tussle, with Jena proving justthe better on the day with a 21-15 victory.

The final began as a hard fought contest, Jena grabbed an early 7-2 lead, before Molly fought back to level at 10-all.

Molly seemed to have grabbed a crucial advantage when she scored 4 tomove to a 16-11 advantage, but Jenawon consecutive ends to bring the scoreto 16-14. Molly then won three ends in arow to be on the cusp of victory leading20-14.

Jena then hit back hard, scoring a 2and a 3 to move to 19, then grabbed thematch by playing a brilliant trail into theditch with her last bowl, sitting on the jackand leaving Molly only a few centimetresto draw second.

The NSW U18 Girls Pairs saw 14teams battle it out in four sections, the

section winners and next best performedadvancing to the quarter finals. All gameswere played over 12 ends.

In the semi-finals Jess Cousley andTracey-Lee Swift beat Molly Wilton andLauren Shaw 11-9 while dawn Haymanand Jamie-Lee Worsnop knocked outJessica Hili and Keeley McGuire 15-13.

The quarter finals were also closefought affairs, three finished with a differ-ence of two shots, the other just one.

After the close nature of the quarterand semi finals, the final proved to besomewhat of an anti-climax. DawnHayman and Jamie Lee Worsnopgrabbed control of the final, not allowingtheir opponents (Jess Cousley andTracey-Lee Swift) a foothold. They racedto an unassailable lead courtesy of bothplaying great draw and conversion shots. The final score was 21-2.

A big vote of thanks to Illawarra Zone16 and the members and staff ofWindang BC for their support over theChampionships.

Pairs finalists (l to r): Runners-up Jessica Cousley (Wagga RSL), Tracey-Lee Swift (Goulburn Railway) with winners, Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow)and Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park).

District History

On February 13, 1913, 8 ladies had aroll up on Hamilton BC’s greens.

This was the commencement of ladiesbowls in Newcastle.

Hamilton BC was officially opened onFebruary 17, 1914 with a 3 rink green.

Torpey Place Women’s Bowling andCroquet Club was officially opened onApril 28, 1926 with 18 playing members,3 bowling rinks and 2 croquet greens. Thecroquet section was abandoned in 1935when a full bowling green was construct-ed. Sadly these 2 clubs have now closed.

These clubs were closely followed byLambton Park, Newcastle South, Stockton,New Lambton, Raymond Terrace,Newcastle, Adamstown and Sulphide.

There were a number of Clubs associated early on with the District whichare now in the Hunter River District whichwas formed on November 27, 1951.

In 1934 the Newcastle and NorthernDistrict Association was formed with clubsaffiliating individually with the State body. There was some disagreement regardingrepresentation with the State and eventu-ally Torpey Place, Newcastle and Torontoformed a breakaway group who affiliated

with the NSWWBA and with Yambaformed the Northumberland DWBA onJune 18, 1937. This was the first Districtaffiliated as such with the NSWWBA.

In 1941 those clubs who were still withthe Newcastle and Northern District joinedthe Northumberland District whichbecame the Newcastle DWBA in 1962. InMay 2008, a small club, Bayway Villagewas formed in our District.

In January, 2000 there was a boundarydivision in the Newcastle District and LakeMacquarie DWBA was formed.

We have enjoyed the friendship of the5 Districts (former “D” Group) over theyears: Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, HunterRiver, Upper Hunter and Central Coast.

This year Regions took over Groupswith the Newcastle, Hunter River, andUpper Hunter being Region 5. LakeMacquarie and Central Coast DistrictsRegion 6. We wish each region the verybest. Mrs Maree Harman is the RegionalRepresentative for Region 5.

Also the new NSWWBA Constitutionand By-Laws came into effect September,2011. The District is now waiting to havethe new District Constitution and By–Laws

75 Years of History – Newcastle District WBAapproved by the State. In 2003 the Districtwas incorporated.

Over the years there are Represent-ative games, Rose Bowl with the CentralCoast District, Howard Shield with theIllawarra District and a representativegame with Bowls ACT which are verycompetitive but friendly. Also there is anInter-District Day each year with theHunter River District. The Grand Carnivalhas been running for many, many yearsand is one of the highlights as is theCarnival Concert.

The honours brought to the districthave been many and varied. NewcastleDistrict along with all Districts has seenmany changes in the State Dress Policy.

There is a big future for Lawn Bowlswith the District’s young bowlers showingthe way. Natasha Van Eldik, Kelly Richardsand Sarah Vesenjak are remarkable youngladies and a great example to the Districtand State who are very proud of them.

The Office Bearers of the NewcastleDistrict WBA are to be commended overthe past 75 years because without theseladies and the many club members therewould not be this wonderful district.

Goulburn Railway WBC held a verysuccessful Charity Day raising money forthe Dialysis Unit at Goulburn BaseHospital. two coastal districts (Bega-Imlay and theFar South Coast) with temperate weatherconditions, so play occurs throughout theentire year and the third district, SnowyMountains which is inland on a highplateau, and closed for the winter. This disparity creates its own difficulties. Oneclub, Mallacota, is actually in Victoria as theBega-Imlay district is closer for them thanfar-eastern Victoria.

Our 2012 Regional pennant play off washeld for the first time ever in the SnowyMountains and what a good event they ran.

What size and colour are your bowls?Size 2, purple/pink (to echo lavender?)

Tell us something of your history withbowls. Is this the only club you havebelonged to and a brief summary of thehigh points at this club or others towhich you have belonged.

At the Balnarring Club I played lead for 9years in the premier pennant team whichwon three District flags. I was the ClubSingles Champion in my last year. I have

I live with my husband, John, in PambulaBeach, close to Merimbula, a natural paradise on the Sapphire Coast. This iswhere we used to holiday every summerwhen we lived in Victoria and so when itcame time for us to retire (from our lavenderfarm on the Mornington Peninsula) wechose this area. I am a passionate gardener; enjoy travel, music and walkingRex our Springer Spaniel.

How long have you been bowling? In 1996, John and I attended a free

sausage sizzle at the Balnarring Club, 80kms south of Melbourne. I really enjoyed it(he didn’t!) so I joined up. I was incrediblylucky to be coached by a lady who tookme under her wing and within a few weeks Iwas decked out in ‘whites’ and was playingin a triples game as her lead. I can remem-ber how nervous I was on that very first daybut we won!

How did you become interested in bowl-ing and what keeps you going?

I used to play golf but increasingly strug-gled with a knee problem – the result of anold skiing injury. Also, I had been very busysetting up a lavender farm. One day I feltthe need of more interaction with people sothe timing was right. I was very impressedwith the members at the Balnarring Cluband all the hard work they put in to make ita friendly and competitive environment. They accepted me with open arms andalthough I was unable to serve on committees at that time I knew that when Ihad more time I would offer my servicesand hopefully be able to give somethingback to the sport of bowls.

You live south of Sydney, what is yourbowling club?

I play at the Merimbula-Imlay BowlingClub. Merimbula is located at the south-eastern extremity of NSW approximatelyhalf way between Sydney and Melbourne. Itis on the Sapphire Coast close to the Begavalley where the famous Bega cheese originates. It is a tourist town which treblesin size in holiday periods. More and morepeople are retiring to this area and there are plenty of different activities availableincluding cultural ones. Can you tell us a bit about the regionyou are representing?

Region 9 encompasses three districts,

now been at Merimbula-Imlay for 7 yearsplaying pennant in the top team which wonthe State Grade 3 Pennant in 2011. AtMerimbula I have served on selection andcommittee and was the District Secretaryfor 2 years prior to my appointment as theRegion 9 representative. I value the friend-ships I have made during Pennant, Districtand Regional play and administration.

How many days a week do you bowl?Usually I bowl twice a week and I try to

enter in club and district championshipsand to play away in tournaments wheneverpossible.

Have you had any challenges in yourbowling career?

Yes, lots, but finding the time to playmore is the current one. I am predominantlya draw bowler though I enjoy skipping but Ineed to improve on my shots!

Final CommentsI am pleased that the dress code has

been relaxed and that NSWWBA hasappointed the CDO’s, as women’s bowlsneeds to be modernised and made moreattractive to a wider circle including workingwomen and younger players (without disadvantaging the traditional older players).I am enjoying working with NSWWBA Inc.Directors and the CEO, Heather and herstaff, who are always friendly and helpful.

contemplating dropping down a size.

Tell us something of your history withbowls. Is this the only club you havebelonged to and a brief summary of thehigh points at this club or others towhich you have belonged.

My only club has been Umina Beach. Ihave been a member since 1987 and during that time have held many committeepositions such as Social, Match, Publicity,Secretary, Vice President and President. Ihave been lucky enough to win a fewchampionships and a Grade 5 Pennant. Ihave played in Grade 2 pennants for thepast few years and enjoy the experience buthaven’t entered club championships due toother commitments for some years. I havealso been on the Central Coast District for10 years. Had several turns as Chairman ofthe Match Committee then Vice-Presidentand am currently President. I also enjoydoing the Central Coast website.

How many days a week do you bowl?Due to my commitments with District I

haven’t bowled regularly for some time but Iendeavour to play once a week if I can andhopefully in the near future will be able tobowl more. I recently played in the StateCarnival which I enjoyed except for the rain!

Have you had any challenges in yourbowling career?

My biggest challenge was getting backto bowls after my car accident. Howeverwith the help of the ladies at Umina I managed this.

Have you always been good at bowls?I have been fairly consistent but like

most bowlers it depends on how I feel onthe day. I always endeavour to play goodbowls.

What is so special about playing bowls?I find the friendships I have made have

been the most rewarding. The ladies arealways there for everyone when in need. Afew years ago when I had a bad car accident the members rallied round andhelped me with so much. They are thesame with anyone who needs help. A lovelybunch of people!

I have lived on the Central Coast since1983. I first resided at Koolewong and havebeen at Umina Beach for 18 years. Mycareer was in the medical sector workingfor Specialists and G.P.’s becoming eventually Practice Manager at my last position. I gave up work in 2001 to lookafter my mother until she passed on andam now happily a ‘senior citizen’. My life isso busy these days I wonder how I everfound the time to go to work.

How long have you been bowling?I started bowling in 1987 at age 40.

I was still working at the time but managedto fit bowls in around work.

Please tell us how you came to be interested in bowling and what keepsyou going on playing?

I was a tennis/squash player but a couple of unfortunate accidents into the wallplaying squash put paid to that. As both myparents were bowlers I thought why notgive it a try. At that time Sport and Recwere running a four day course at GosfordBowling Club so I went along and becamehooked. I find the challenge keeps my interest up: weather conditions, how onefeels on the day and so on. Each game isdifferent.

You live north of Sydney, what is yourbowling club?

I joined Umina Beach WBC in 1987 asmy mother was a member there.

Can you tell us a bit about the regionyou are representing?

My region includes Central Coast District(23 clubs) and Lake Macquarie Districts (21clubs). Membership at last official count was3050 which makes it the largest region inthe State. Both Lake Macquarie and CentralCoast District have been very receptive toinformation given to them. We have recentlyhad our first Regional Pennant playoff inLake Macquarie District and RegionalChampionships in Central Coast Districtboth events going off very well. When wehad the Group playoffs we had to have around robin as there were 5 districts in ourGroup so it was a change to have just aone game playoff. The ladies certainly hadto be on their game.

What size and colour are your bowls? At the moment I play with a Size 3

Heavy, Aqua colour, although I am

What information would you give tobowlers to help them along?I would encourage all bowlers to go out and enjoy the game whether you win orlose. Good sportsmanship should alwaysprevail.

Have you had any funny or interestingexperiences you would like to share withus?

Many years ago quite a few teams from Umina went to the Westport Carnivalevery year. We used to get together at alocal Chinese restaurant for a banquet anda lot of frivolity obviously took place. Oneyear, not long after we left the restaurant, the place burned down. We knew it had nothing to do with us, but sadly we hence had to find a new venue for the nextyear.

Would you like to share you favouritetelevision programme and what makes itso good for you to watch?

I like to watch a variety of programmeswhen I get time. However MidsummerMurders was one of my favourites. I alsoenjoy watching Compass. They certainlydelve into some interesting stories and ofcourse I love the bowls on Foxtel. It is a pitythe ABC stopped their broadcasts.

What is it like living in Umina Beach, canyou give us an idea of where this isplease. If you could change your lifewhat would you do, where would youlive?

Umina Beach is situated on the CentralCoast Peninsular about 80 kms north ofSydney. I enjoy living there. I can walk to thebeach in 5 minutes and we have a lovelywalk along the waterfront. It is like being onholidays all the time. Family members arescattered in Sydney and Brisbane and itwould be nice at times to be closer to thembut I have all my friends here. I certainlywouldn’t move back to Kensington which iswhere I originally came from. I am off for a 7week holiday to Europe in late July with 3other ladies from Umina Club and am looking forward to this.

What makes you proud to be a bowler?I think it is great to belong to an

organization that not only plays bowls, butraises money for local charities throughoutthe year. Lady bowlers are certainly verygenerous with their time and money. Wemust remember also that all positions atclubs/districts/state are filled by volunteersand we certainly owe thanks to all who givetheir time so generously so all can enjoytheir game of bowls.

Dundas Sports and RecreationWomen’s Bowling Club werelooking for a weekend competi-

tion. They needed a competition thatcatered for working women bowlerswho are unable to compete through-out the week when women’s bowls are traditionally played. This makes up the majority of the club’s membership.

So, when the opportunity arose toplay a ‘5-a-side’ competition onSaturdays, organised by St Johns ParkBC, the women of this small family oriented club were excited but nervous.

Here was a reason to play, now itwas needed to organise two teamseach consisting of a pairs team and atriples team. The players were inexperi-enced and would have a hard time upagainst great women bowlers but thelove of the game far outweighed theoption of NOT giving it a go.

Over a series of weekends includingboth home and away games, DundasSports teams played off using a pointssystem. To the club’s delight one teammade it to the playoffs and then foundthemselves in the Final!

This was a feat in itself with some of

the team members having just recentlyfinished their coaching and had onlybeen on the green for a little over twelvemonths. The final was held on June 16,2012 and the women of Dundas Sportsand Recreation Club turned their anxious nervousness into steely resolve, their laughter and tears of relief into joyas they competed in the rain and windall day to win victorious 46–18 overIngleburn.

A special thanks to our friends at

St Johns Park, particularly Lee Such, forarranging a competition that meets theneeds of enticing more women to playlawn bowls and for being perfect hostsfor the final.

Also of note this year is our achieve-ment to reach the 50th Anniversary ofDundas Sports and Recreation Club.Drop in for a meal and try your hand atlawn bowls and you might be saying likea lot of people do …“I wish I had startedthis game sooner.”

The annual Ann Merrion Shield Daywhich has been running for more

than 50 years was held at CardiffWomen’s Bowling Club recently. Thisshield was donated by club Patron AnnMerrion about five years after the clubstarted 58 years ago.

It is run on a competitive basis andwon by different people of different clubsevery year, occasionally one or twobowlers may be in a team more thanonce. In the past we played two games of15 ends each and then they played offwith another 3 ends to find a winner. Nowwe only play 21 ends and then it is drawto the jack. Margaret Merrion, grand-daughter of Ann Merrion is the club’sSocial Secretary. The Merrion family

originally owned a bakery at Cardiff. This year’s Ann Merrion Shield was

held on a beautiful sunny day and it wasgreat to see so many bowlers there.

The winners were a team from HeatonBirmingham Gardens skipped by

M. Weddell with runners-up from Burwood,B. Long, D. Kearns, D. Cashman. The consolation prize went to a team fromValentine: K. Ford, R. Ryan, and B. Gane.Five members of the Merrion family joinedus for a lovely lunch.

CORRECTIONIn the May-June Bowls News, it was stated that the Bowls

Australia Logo must be worn on Social days. This is incorrect, according to the NSWWBA State Dress Policy, when playing bowlssocially (ie. not Championships etc.) bowls wear as supplied bybowls manufacturers and suppliers must be worn.

Bowlswear bought from a supplier will usually have the BA Logo, but the Logo is not essential on apparel worn for social bowls.

A Good Pinch of Rosemary

Your friendly and worthy editor, Barbara, has decided to take a big risk somewhat akin to either putting a

microphone in front of a politican, or deciding to runyour racehorse against Black Caviar, in that she hasasked me to contribute, at least for the remainder of theyear, and unless, in the meantime the readers revolt, aregular column for Bowls News.

Sticking to the “political” theme for just one moment, I wasabout to write that I am “humbled”, but I think we’re all a littletired of people being “humbled”. ”Humble”didn’t begin wellwith Uriah Heep, and has been on a downhill spiral ever since, but that’s another story (yes, indeed it is). I’ll merely say I’mchuffed to have been asked, and will try to contribute something worthwhile for each issue, hopefully not too bland, but also not too combative. Though this month’s column doesconcentrate on bowls, the column won’t always be bowls-focused, as I’d like to introduce other interesting ideas alongthe way. Hopefully, some readers may be motivated enough towrite the occasional response, or even try their hand at somesmall competition ideas which could be introduced if there isany frisson of interest at all.

As we go through life, we are constantly confronted bychange. Where would we be without the mobile phone and thecomputer? Perhaps I should withdraw that particular questionon the grounds that, already, I can visualise an army of a fewhundred women bowlers pelting me with rotten fruit. However,on a scale of one to ten in assessing the way change affectsus, whilst admitting that changes in the sporting sphere wouldrank at a very low No. 10 in comparison with serious life reversals, nonetheless it’s true to say we have undergone massive changes to our game.

Some of these changes are reflected in my own extremelystrong Lansdowne District, where, being foolhardy, I still playcompetitively. It’s a strange thing but, if you visit clubs outsidethis district, it is as if our very successful, top achieving playersdon’t really have much direct relationship with the day-to-dayfunctioning of the smaller and less financial clubs. These smaller clubs appear to just get on with their bowling lives. Ifyou happen to ask there who it was who has this last weekwon some mammoth international women’s bowling event, orsome prestigious State event, all you will normally get inresponse to your query is a sea of blank faces. I think, overall,it is a wonderful thing that these less aspirational clubs continue to happily operate on a much smaller scale – notsmaller, let me hasten to add, in the way of weekly enjoymentof our game, but smaller in that they don’t set themselvesalmost impossibly prestigious winning goals.

The more practical changes in our game have also beenquite significant, and they encompass, most obviously, thewave of younger bowlers into our game. Not young, as in 30years of age, which I was when I donned the then forbiddinggarb, but really, really young, as in your grandchildren! Initially, it was fairly hard to take, but, as with almost all change, eventually we settled into a level of resigned and peacefulacceptance. Our first thoughts on sighting youngsters on thegreens may well have been, what were they about, invadingour space, how would we converse with them, why is their dialogue on the greens liberally sprinkled with expletives, andwhy do they know everything about the game after 5 minutes?

These and other vexatious questions have mostly been dealtwith, and you only need to tune in to any (rapidly diminishingby the way) TV bowls broadcast to face the reality that theyoung bowlers are brilliant exponents of the game. And, ifwe’re in doubt, the commentators tell us, ad nauseam, howthrilling and beneficial for our game it is to be able to watchthese 15, 16, 17 and 18 year olds fighting out the finals of thelatest State/Australian event.

It might seem churlish to bring up the fact that an initial giant spurt in the numbers of young bowlers (now spirallingdownwards) encouraged widespread drives for young bowlers, but this concerted effort has continued to be a hugely costlyexercise for clubs and State bodies, begging the question asto whether a genuine cost/benefit analysis is warranted. Moreimportantly, our overall membership continues to fall, meaningwe hardly see a week go by without another club closure. Thefact that you don’t hear too many people within the powerbase of lawn bowls keen to speak up about these debilitating statistics might appear to be counter-productive, but that’sanother story for another day.

Some of the seemingly minor changes which affected theactual playing of our game, have, thankfully, been reversed. There was the pointless exercise of the person winning the endbeing able to decide whether or not to retain or give away themat – this changed the feel, emphasis and outcome of manygames, and, thank goodness, is now gone. Then there wasthe abolition of the very short end – thankfully, if you like to seetrue bowling artistry on the green, gonski. Also, pleased tonote, of late the ubiquitous and clumsy high-fiving seems tohave pretty much gone for a bath, as does the once-growingtendency to have a small arm of “helpers” (?) grouped aroundthe skipper as she studied each end. There was also the timewe flirted with the idea of a player shooting off the green to askher coach/manager just what shot she should next play. As,quite often, you mightn’t even be prepared to ask this sideline person’s opinion about just where the sun rises in the sky, itwas always an insult to the ability of the player to make herown decisions. Thankfully, only a shooting and quite dull staracross our firmament.

I’m regularly scolded that to not welcome change is to stagnate, which “they” delight in hectoring me about, is not agood thing, even if you may be as happy as a pig in mud inyour stagnant pool of familiarity. However, though many don’tacknowledge it, I believe our game of bowls has undergone farmore radical change than almost any other popular sport.Certainly, the sudden advent of the teenage, or younger, playerfrom a base which catered for people mostly 50 plus, has notbeen seen in any other sport, neither has the huge change inuniform and playing equipment, nor the radical shortening ofthe long game to the sets format. Where other sports have tinkered with the frills and flounces around the periphery oftheir basic games, lawn bowls has, over the last twenty years, exploded into a completely new reality. Is it a good “new reality,I hear you cry? Maybe that’s for me to fondly imagine I know, and for the rest of you learned readers, to find out!
