E&OE

There have been some very busy people since the last Bowls Matters went toprint. Be sure to read the State Champion of Champions — Singles (page 22) andPairs (page 23) write-ups in this magazine. There has been a lot of work put intothese events. Thank you to Warilla and Oak Flats clubs for not only hosting theseevents but also for their sponsorship of these events, and to the NSWWBA MatchCommittee with Pam Hockings as Chairman. Thank you to Robyn and Jenny fororganising these events. With so many wonderful bowlers taking part, it just had tobe the success it was and the weather was also better this year.

You will find some good reading in this month’s edition. You may even see somepeople you recognise this month with good news about the journal’s past Editor,Edna Arnold, who has been made a Life Member of her club, just as she finishesher District Presidency. Congratulations Edna on the work you have done.

Bowl for Others will be having its annual lunch in August and information isfound on page 13 and also on the website.

Rosemary O’Brien has given us, I will call it, her Life Story for want of a bettertitle. Though it is long, there are many things for the long standing members ofbowls and also for the newer members, and it has been appreciated thatRosemary has taken the time to write for us over these many months. I am in aweof her use of words.

Last month Publicity Officers should have been reminded about sending in theresults of Pennants along with photos. Possibly some of the results may not get toprint as the next Bowls Matters will contain all the results of the Pennant playoffswhich will have been held at Port Stephens during August.

For Regions, Districts and Clubs, as soon as you have finished your events for2013, will the Publicity Officers please send them along with photos, to the addressin the front of your journals. The set-out for these items may be seen by looking atany edition of the journal in 2013.

Happy bowling to everyone.Barbara Hazeltine, Editor

Having taken on the Presidency very unexpectedly, I’ve had littletime to settle in. The first thing I would like to do is to thank PatriciaReynolds for her nearly two years in this position, and for providing asteady hand to the Board while the Association has moved from the oldto the new Constitutions, and the many issues surrounding governanceand management. We wish her all the best.

President’s Message

It is my intention over the next twomonths until the AGM in September toensure that the organisation maintainsthe course that the Board has deter-mined with regards to the Strategic Planand the other resolutions that have beenmade. This includes our review of the2014 Pennant Conditions of Play that isdue for release in September/October,implementing the new Coaching andUmpiring modules, re-introducing theDelegates Meetings, and continuing toreview the Districts and Boundaries inconjunction with RNSWBA.

This may also be an ideal opportunityto review some of the expectations ofthe travel requirements of the President.State representation at the very manysignificant birthdays and Presidents Daystake a huge toll on the well being andtime of Board members, and while

tradition is a wonderful thing, there is alimit to how much can be achieved inthis direction. Since the introduction ofthe new Constitution there has alsobeen a substantial reduction ofAssociation personnel able to carry outthese visits. At the same time I amextremely mindful of the importance ofkeeping in touch with our members andof course the line of communication willalways be available for everyone.

I’m looking forward to seeing every-one at the Delegates Meeting and theAGM on Wednesday September 18th asit is always an opportunity to catch upwith what’s been happening around thestate.

Robyn ProcterActing President

Patricia Reynolds has resignedas both President and Directorof the NSW Womens Bowling

Association due to ill health, effective as of 28 June 2013.

Patricia joined the Board in 2008and was Vice President before becom-ing President in 2011. The Associationhas undergone quite rapid change inthe past few years and Patricia hadone foot in the past and the other firmly in the new, understanding that tosurvive, womens bowls needed toadapt and change. She took this message far and wide around thestate, working tirelessly for theAssociation.

The Board, Committee and staffwould like to thank Patricia for hercontribution and wish her all the bestfor the future.

The Board have elected DirectorRobyn Procter as the Acting Presidentuntil the AGM on September 18, 2013.The Board will then appoint the port-folio of President by election at the firstBoard Meeting following the AGM.

to the matches and I don’t think there was a single person that didn’t dive into her handbag to turn off her phone. How different from 5 years ago!

So, how to differentiate from the ‘if it’s not broke don’tchange it’ to the changes that are essential to our survival? There is a difference between making informed decisions andemotional guesses and that’s where the Bowls Census comesin. From that, and in combination with the Australian Bureau ofStatistics Five Year Census, there is a surprising amount ofinformation that can be gleaned. Certainly, most of it confirmswhat we know to be true but there are some areas that if webury our heads in the sand hoping it will go away, then it willbe to the detriment of the sport.

Flexibility has to be the new catch-word to enable the sportto embrace the emerging different lifestyles that are part andparcel of today’s society. Whether it is to cater to women whowork, or split families with children in residence one weekendbut not the next, grandparents who babysit, travel or healthissues, the old formats of mandatory playing days or dates willneed to be reviewed. The State Match Committee advocates‘play by’ dates so that if a particular day inconveniences oneside unfairly then an alternative can be mutually agreed upon.Game formats that are unforgiving if someone has difficultyattending due to work, or has another occasion that may takepriority every now and then (children?) will suffer over othersthat can be played at alternate times of the day or night.

Obviously, goodwill is a necessity but it is becoming veryapparent that the old style of inflexible and uncompromisingtimes, dates and attitudes has well and truly done its dash. Allclubs and committees are now obligated to think of ways ofmaking the sport more accessible to all walks of society toenable it to survive and move forward with the times.

Bowls is one of the few sports to have undertaken a professionally managed, independent census. Theimportance of this can’t be underestimated, as it

gives our Boards, at both National and State level, a moresolid platform from which to plan the future. All Boardmembers want to leave the sport stronger ‘on their watch’than otherwise, and statistics provided by the BowlsCensus are invaluable for basing decisions that will havefar-reaching consequences.

It is no secret that over 90% of our membership are on theupward side of 55 years of age, a sector of society that isnotorious for its reluctance to accept change. But this flies inthe face of reality when you consider that this is precisely theage group, particularly the over 70s, who have lived their livesthrough the greatest period of change that humankind has everseen. Does this mean that there is a limit to the amount ofchange that one person can make? Or more probably, does itmean that we have developed a ‘radar’ for change that makesus all a bit wary of yet another new thing until it has proved itsworth? A case in point is that at the recent State Carnival, theofficial of the day asked that mobile phones be turned off prior

Match Committee Report

Some of the following issues havearisen in the last two months which

we would like to clarify.• A player has an injury that preventsthem from playing in a championshipgame (at any level) and they require theuse of a substitute. Provided they areincapable of taking to the green to play, they can attend the club without penalty. Only the registered Club candeny any person entry to their premises. This has not been a “rule” for quite some time and outdated conditions from years gone by shouldnot be resurrected.

• On entry forms where a contact phonenumber is required, we have been giventhe home phone number of the ClubSecretary, which is not at all helpful ifwe are trying to contact the player/teamto advise them that they have receiveda forfeit very close to the commence-ment of the event, and could delay theirneed to arrive by half a day. We needthe mobile phone details of the playeror a player in the team to enable us to

do our job as efficiently as possible.• The directive to turn off mobile phonesduring play is repeated at all levels andstill there are those that just don’t seemto adhere to this request. I recentlyfound a cut out from a Bowls News in November 2004 where this is mentioned in the exact same detail that is used today. It may become necessary to penalize those that justdon’t think the rules apply to them.

• During the recent bout of rainy weather, the Match Committee received enquiresfour or five days before the Championof Club Pairs Champions event wasdue to commence, enquiring whether ithad been called off. No State eventwould be abandoned before it was dueto commence because of the distancestravelled by the majority of competitorsand the arrangements with the venueClub, no decision would probably bemade until two days of the event hadpassed with NO play. So turn up whatever the weather is the directive.

• Catering arrangements for all State run

Issues to be clarified events (at all levels) is covered in theConditions of Play Item No. 8. This hasnot varied for a number of years, butstill players question whether they haveto pay. When entering these State controlled events, you accept theConditions of Play as set down by submitting an entry and we should notneed to continually advise players onthe day of their commitment.

• We have had a number of enquiriesfrom Clubs and players as to why theyare required to play their Champion-ships or Pennants at a certain time ofyear, and starting play at a specifiedtime of day, and can’t the State changethe schedule. The State MatchCommittee has not set down a specificplaying schedule for Club or Districtevents (including Pennants) for a num-ber of years, and our only requirementis that it fits into the NSW Calendar ofEvents and takes into account any recommendations contained in thatdocument. The only date set by theState is the closing date, when entriesfor the Playoff events must be receivedin the NSW Office. You should refer anyqueries regarding playing timetable toyour District for their attention.

Our Membership stands at 126 and 35 of those are new members inthe last couple of years.

Many of the new girls are already playing Pennants and Championships andhave taken on Committee positions.

Our Coach, Pam Smith, runs two coaching sessions a week –Wednesday’s 10.30am to 12 noon Saturday’s – Circuit Training 10.30am to 12 noon

followed by a Coffee/Chat bonding session that has been a phenomenal success.

The Club had a Membership Drive, distributing leaflets in the local areawhich attracted quite a few responses to come and give Bowls a go.

Our area, Port Stephens is a Blue Water Wonderland, a beautiful place for a bowling holiday. We have quite a few tournaments during the yearand we would welcome all to enter and enjoy. All interested parties contactPam Smith, also Match Committee Chairperson on 4984 1671.

We also welcome all visitors to enjoy a social game with us whilst holidaying in the area.

It is correct procedure to fill in everysquare on the scorecard. It is incor-rect to leave a blank space when ateam does not score a shot. The spacewould be filled in with a – (dash) andthe score from the previous end car-ried down. The team winning the endwould complete the end by recordingthe number of shots scored, in theappropriate column and then addingthis number of shots to the previoustotal shots scored and recording thisin the column for total shots scored.

A Tied End would be recorded foreach team by placing a dash in theshots scored column and the score carried down in the column for the totalshots scored. (End 5)

Unless conditions of play state other-wise the score would be recorded onthe scorecard with your own team onthe left side of the scorecard.

CONCEDINGIn any Championship Event including

State Events at District Level and inPennants, a team can concede at anytime during the game. The umpires’ permission is not necessary. NSWWBAConditions of Play Item 12.

When it is decided to concede theteam which concedes does, in theory, give their opponents eight (nine intriples) shots per end, for each of theunplayed ends.

Examples below are for Fours (4’s)games and also for each team of a pennant side.

Example 1. With two ends to play, itis usually the team which is losing andhaving no chance of winning that concedes these two ends. When thisoccurs good sportsmanship decreesthat the game finishes with the scoresas they are, even though in theory, theteam which is ahead could claim 8shots per end. In a knockout match allthat is necessary is to find a winner.

Example 2. With two ends to play, ateam which is leading by 17 shots canconcede. The opponent may claim 8shots per end, but why would they. Theycannot win the game.

Example 3. PENNANT – A matchbetween Club Rose and Club Boronia. On rink 1 the game is finished and ClubRose won by 8 shots. On rink 2 ClubRose is ahead by one shot with one endto play. The Skip of the Club Rose onrink 2 wants to concede the last endbecause Club Boronia cannot win thematch. The skip of Club Boronia wantsto play the last end in the hope of

recording a team win. If Team Rose concedes under these circumstances,Club Boronia can and should claim theeight shots. The result of the Pennantmatch would then be an overall win forClub Rose by 1 shot and one team win.Club Boronia would have a side lossand one team win.

Pennant conditions of play SCORINGAT ALL LEVELS indicates the number ofpoints awarded to each side.

Example 4. Pennant – Club Rose isagain playing Club Boronia. On rink 1Club Rose has won by 2 shots. On rink2 Club Boronia is ahead by 10 shotswith one end to play. Club Rose cannotwin either rink or the game (the mostthey can score is another 8 shots) and so they decide to concede the lastend.

The result of the match is – a sidewin to Club Boronia plus two team wins.

NOTE: It should be remembered inPennants in determining section winners that:

Pennant conditions of play indicatethat –

(A) The side with the highest numberof points shall be the winner.

(B) If points are equal, the side withthe greatest margin of Nett shotsbe the winner (Total shot for, minus total shot against equalNett shots.)

Therefore the difference between winning the section could be by oneshot and so it is very important that allends are played to determine shots forand against to determine the winner of asection at the end of sectional play.

I’ll think I’ll pack my bowls away andfind some other game to play.

I’ll take up draughts or dominoes – it’stragic how my poor bowl goes.

When my ends are short, I play themlong. My fingers make my grip all wrong.

When ends are long, I’m never up. My“follow through” has gone to pot.

“Please take the grass,” my skip will sayin her truly great sarcastic way.

But then she explodes and blows hertop – my skinny bowl takes out the shot.

The Captain cries “Come around theback, I want one here behind the jack.”

Insead of that my bowl arrives, rightdead in front to stop her drives.

“We’re holding ‘four’, just draw another,I’d rather you be short than over.”

But, oh my goodness! What have Idone? I’ve put them in to give them “one”.

The game frustrates me, drives memad, I never thought I’d play so bad.

The greens too fast, the greens tooslow, just what to do, I do not know.

I think I’ve had bowls or the season, Ijust can’t understand the reason.

I’ve hardly drawn a shot as yet, themore I try, the worse I get, But ...

Bowls is a funny game, they say my lastgood shot has won the day.

A bit of a wobble and couple of wicks, Itook their shot bowl out for six!

So! See you at the green tomorrow.

WIND Friend or FoeKathryn Chatillon, Elizabeth McFarland [email protected] Report

At this time of year NSW bowlerswill not only be competingagainst others but also against

the elements of cold, rain and windyweather.

When competing under these condi-tions it would be easy to stay in thecomfort of indoors where it is nice andwarm, instead of facing the elements.

Windy conditions can be very unpleasant to bowl in, but like most outdoor sports, to achieve, players needto learn to overcome their attitude towards the elements. How many timeshave you heard a fellow bowler say“they hate bowling in the wind”?Immediately there is a negative thoughtthat produces a psychological weaknessin your game.

What can you do to overcome thisnegativity? Develop strategies that boosta more positive approach that helps youto cope with windy conditions. Acceptthat you can’t change the weather butyou can improve your game to betterhandle the conditions.

Don’t be just a fair weather bowler.Get out there in similar conditions asoften as you can and practice and morepractice until you become the master, not the wind. Practicing in like conditions will give you the confidenceto play knowing you can handle thechallenge.

During practice is when the condi-tions observe how your bowl handles insuch conditions, how does the bowl behave when there is a cross wind asopposed to a head or tail wind.

A good standard practice grid is torollup without the jack, watching thecourse of the bowl and the way in whichthe bowl’s line or path is affected, constantly making a mental note of theoutcome. Always give equal practice toboth the forehand and backhand, at thesame time take note also how the condition of the green affects the outcome. Is it holding, slowing the bowlor giving the bowl that extra force whendelivered. When the wind is continuallychanging direction and speed, practicehelps you build confidence in the shotyou have chosen.

Train yourself through experience, thesupervision of a coach and by talking toothers about the venue your competingat. Gather information about the greenand how the various wind directions affects play. Take note how the buildingstructures, fences, bushes etc. causesthe wing to tunnell, or change direction.

Be aware of the weight that you use.The faster the speed of the green andthe stronger the wind, the harder it is toexercise weight control. If you areachieving your best results on one particular side or hand don’t change iteven if it appears to be the wrong hand.Don’t be afraid to have confidence inyour decision and don’t be swayed bythe results of others on the green.

During practice time engage the helpof a coach, one who can observe, videoyour performance and offer expert advice as to the best play for such acondition.

With constant good practice you willgain the confidence to make “the windyour friend’, use it to your advantageand achieve that shot, and enjoy bowlsall year round.

Look for wind indica-tors at ground level.Flags on a pole metersinto the air will often

indicate the general direction ofthe wind but down on the

green can be a very different situation.Look at the corner flags of the green, orthe movement of clothing – this will tellyou what is happening at the head.Feeling the wind’s force and direction onyour body is another indicator.

Gathering of simple information andexperiencing similar conditions canchange the whole complex of thematch, because you as a player havetaken the time to gain knowledge aboutyour game and how conditions influenceyour game.

On windy days you can only controlyour level of focus, delivery and the lineof delivery. Once the bowl leaves yourhand there is nothing more you can doas the force of the wind takes over.

The angle of delivery changes inwindy conditions. When the wind is

Wind is blowing Right to Left

Wind is blowing Left to Right

When delivering a bowl on the lefthand the angle will be narrower as yourbowl is pushed out, you will need to adjust your aiming line.

The reverse occurs when the wind isblowing from left to right.

Juniors News

NSWWBA • BOWLS MATTERS14

After 9 straight days of rain, thesun finally shone through to markthe opening day of the NSW and

Queensland Under 18 Test Seriesplayed at Taren Point Bowling Club.

With fresh faces mixed with someexperienced state juniors from both sidesthe stage was set for a great series.

NSW jumped out of the gates earlyand never looked back on the openingmorning with Ellen Ryan winning heropening singles match 21-4, DylanSkinner closely followed in his singlesmatch recording a 21-15 victory. Thefours battles were both very close knitaffairs with NSW gaining the upper handtowards the end in both. In the Boys,Corey Wedlock played a match winninglast bowl to claim a one shot victory.

After a break, the second half of theFirst Test was to be played and QLDwere determined not to let NSW continueon from the morning games. The NSWboys triples had other ideas and went onto record a strong 27-10 victory. Theother match-ups were neck and neck allthe way with many lead changes through-out. NSW grabbed late leads and held onin both the Boys Pairs and Girls Triples. Inthe Girls Pairs the QLD pair lead by 3heading into the last end before a brilliantdisplay of draw bowls from the NSW duoof Dawn Hayman and Lauren Shaw sawthem pick up a 4 and the match 20-19.

A new day and the start of the SecondTest saw Queensland come out as deter-mined as ever to stop NSW from wrap-ping up the series. Queensland started

“State of Origin” Test

strong but the NSW side built on themomentum from the First test, claimingsolid wins in both Singles encounterscourtesy of Luke Jones and Ellen Ryan,Jamie-Lee Worsnop then guided herFours side to a 17-14 win before theBoys Fours held on for a crucial draw.

Queensland needed to win all thegames in the second session to stopNSW from claiming the series before thethird test and they started off in the perfect way, jumping out to a lead in allmatches. With Queensland claiming bothpairs matches the triples matches woulddecide the Second Test. NSW fought allthe way and claimed a 5 shot win in theGirls and a nail biting 1 shot victory in theBoys. These victories ensured NSWwould secure both series still with a Testto play.

With NSW having already claimed theseries the Third Test was all aboutpride between the two ‘State ofOrigin’ counterparts. The NSWBoys and Girls didn’t hold anythingback and fought from start to finishclaiming all the boys matches and 3out of 4 girls matches withQueensland claiming the GirlsSingles 21-11.

This resulted in NSW claiming20.5 out of the 24 rink wins available and the series 3-0 in bothBoys and Girls. The juniors fromboth NSW and Queensland shouldbe applauded for their standard ofbowls and performance both on

and off the green throughout the series, agreat example for many bowlers.

The semi finals saw Natasha Van Eldikdefeat Katrina Wright 25-24, while SharynRenshaw won against Judy King 25-13.These matches were really crowd pleasersand in the first game with Katrina andNatasha it was not sure who would win.

The finals played on Thursday startedwith a dull day but the sun came out andmade it really pleasing. Sharyn Renshawhad supporters from St Johns Park whileNatasha thought her mother would not beable to come as it was her tennis day. TheOak Flats ladies decided they would be“her rent a crowd” but surprisinglyNatasha’s mother was a spectator at thegame. Chairman of Match, Pam Hockingsmarked the match.

Sharyn won the toss but Natasha started off with 2 shots. It seemed as if itwould be a close game which either ladycould win. Sharyn was drawing very wellbut Natasha was going even better.Unfortunately for Sharyn she bumped oneof Natasha’s bowls up and the score was7-2, then 8-4 and 9-4. It was the game ofdrawing bowls with Sharyn drawing awayto bring the score to 9-9 and there shestayed for a while. Natasha had a driveand put the jack in the ditch to score twoshots 11-9. Then Natasha held three shotsto be 14-9. Next end Natasha stretchedthe end out by keeping the mat back andthe jack on the “T”. Natasha was 15-9 andthen she outdrew Sharyn to be 16-9. ThenSharyn outdrew Natasha to go 12-16down. Natasha drew 4 shots to go 20-12,21-12, 23-15. Then Natasha put the jackin the ditch for one shot 24-15. Sharynhad a run and saved 1 shot but Natashahad been holding 3 shots which broughtthe score to 25-15. It was a good game towatch as each knew their opponents skilland were aware that there could be achange at any time in the game.

At the presentation following the gamepresent were Kevin Granger Chairman ofthe Board, George Cowling, Don Ryman,CEO Mat O’Hara and President IllawarraDistrict Thelma Lever. Director PamHockings thanked Oak Flats for theirsponsorship of the game which Oak Flatswere happy to continue in 2014. Commonwealth GamesTrial Squad announced

Australia’s march towards the2014 Glasgow CommonwealthGames took a further step for-

ward recently, with Bowls Australiaannouncing its 12-strong AustralianPara-Bowls Commonwealth GamesTrial Squad.

The para-bowls disciplines are a newaddition to the Commonwealth Gamesformat, with the athletes with a disabilitytriples and vision-impaired pairs eachcompeting for a full medal at the eventnext year, in addition to the eight able-bodied medallions on offer for the sport.

Earning selection in the persons with adisability trial squad are four Victorians, three New South Welshmen, three SouthAustralians and two Queensland representatives, ranging in physical disability classification from B5 to B8.

Following their 2013 Multi-DisabilityNational Championships singles victoriesin Brisbane, Queensland's Tony Bonnell, from Pine Rivers, and Brighton's WendyOdgers have earnt inclusion in thesquad; as did a trio of other Victoriansafter claiming the overall trophy for thetop state at the event.

In the next stage of the selection process to identify the best three candidates to represent the nation at thesport's pinnacle event, the 12-membersquad took part in a national selectioncamp in Melbourne in July, where three

were selected to travel to Wales andScotland in August to compete in theEight Nation Commonwealth GamesInvitational event, alongside theAustralian Jackaroos.

As a result of the influx of responsesBowls Australia received from the call to arms it recently issued seeking expressions of interest from eligiblebowlers with a disability looking to compete at the Commonwealth Games,Australian Coach Steve Glasson OAMand the national selection panel in conjunction with Australian Athletes witha Disability (AAWD) state organisationswill also embark on a state-by-state talent identification program later in theyear to canvass any potential representa-tives who may be suited to don thegreen and gold uniform in the contrastingGlasgow conditions.

"This is an initial selection for candi-dates to possibly represent Australia inthe UK in August and potentiallyGlasgow in 2014," National Coach SteveGlasson OAM said of the announcement.

"This tour will provide three candi-dates with a chance to further press theircase for selection or cement their chancefor selection to Commonwealth Games.

"The motivation for the state wide talent identification program is becausewe don't know how people are going toadapt to Glasgow or Glasgow-mirrored

conditions, because they are totally foreign to us, which is why we are keep-ing the door somewhat open.

"The criteria that we took into accountfor the 12 trial squad members werethings like performances at Nationals;previous results in competition;demeanour, body language and attitudeand technique for heavy green play."

An announcement on the selection ofthe Jackaroos players to compete inWales and Scotland will take place at theconclusion of their competitive trainingcamp at Maribyrnong Bowls Club in Julyalong with the confirmation of the finalthree athletes with a disability to travel tothe UK, while the vision-impaired bowlersattending the tour were finalised aftertheir camp in June.

The world’s top two nationa, theAustralian Jackaroos and New

A litany of the sport's eminent players

While this announcement cements thelocation for next year's international affairagainst old enemy New Zealand, the twocountries are poised to meet on thegreen much sooner, at the Eight NationCommonwealth Games Invitational eventin Glasgow from August 26 toSeptember 1, with the National SelectionPanel confirming the selection of theAustralian contingent in July.

The question of who will repre-sent the green and gold at the2014 Commonwealth Games

in Glasgow next year may havebeen answered after the recentannouncement of the Australianteam to contest the 8-nationsevent in Glasgow from August 26-30 — or has it?

Nineteen Australian bowlers will travelto the UK in just over six weeks for thetraditional host city lead-up to theCommonwealth Games. The team of 19includes a strong blend of experienceand youthful exuberance in the 13person Jackaroos touring team as wellas two of the country’s most talentedand aspiring bowlers with a visionimpairment, accompanied by two directors, and four Para-Sport bowlers, who will compete at the same event inAugust and at the CommonwealthGames next year.

National Coach Steve Glassonemphasises those given a boardingpass for the flight to Scotland havereceived one based on their ability toperform in the conditions expected butnothing is assured in terms of Gamesselection.

Led by team vice-captains, World No

2 Karen Murphy and InternationalBowler of the Year Aron Sherriff, theteam for the 8-nations event boasts nineWorld Champions and twoCommonwealth Games Gold Medallistsand collectively have representedAustralia on over 1700 occasions.

The 8-nations Jackaroos teamincludes Mark Casey (NSW), KelseyCottrell (NSW), Karen Murphy (NSW),Matthew Flapper (VIC), Carla Odgers(VIC), Barrie Lester (VIC), Rebecca VanAsch (Quail) (TAS), Nathan Rice (QLD),Claire Turley (Duke) (NSW), WayneRuediger (SA), Aron Sherriff (NSW),Natasha Van Eldik (NSW) and BrettWilkie (QLD).

Two players, Casey and Murphy haveexperienced the pinnacle of winningCommonwealth Games gold while theyboth join Cottrell, Van Asch, Turley,Ruediger, Sherriff, Van Eldik and Wilkieas World Champions from the last twoevents in 2008 in Christchurch, and2012 in Adelaide.

The prestigious 8-nations event, which kicks off on August 26, will be atthe Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Club inGlasgow, the host venue of bowls at the2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Australian Jackaroos will arrive in

Scotland having won five gold and twosilver medals at the most recent WorldChampionships in Adelaide lastDecember in the most dominant displayin the history of the event, but Glassonis quick to state that this event is a vastly different scenario.

“Conditions in Adelaide were quickand fast and suited our game very wellbut now we travel into foreign territoryand much slower greens so we need tobe prepared for very different conditions.

“Naturally those selected have beenselected on merit and displayed an ability to adapt to the tricky conditionswe expect in Scotland which augers wellfor them in terms of making the Gamesteam but by no means does it indicate awalk-up start to the biggest ticket intown which is a place in the Australianteam for the Games,” Glasson said.

“We have undertaken a robust training regime over the past couple ofmonths including replicating Glasgow-like conditions at the Maribyrnong ParkBowls Club in Melbourne to ensure we were ready to select the most competitive and suitable combination ofbowlers to play against the best nationsin world bowls,” Glasson said.

“We won’t be taking any other country lightly which is why we havespent considerable time to prepare oursquad accordingly.

Australia will join New Zealand,England, South Africa, Malaysia, Canadaand two teams from host nationScotland in the 8-nation event.

The national selection panel in consultation with Australian BlindBowlers Association (ABBA) NationalCoach Graeme Clements, andAustralian Athletes with a DisabilityCoach Jan Palazzi have named twoplayers, Marian Morrison and Tony Scottin the Bowlers with a Vision Impairmentmixed pairs team while Joshua Barry,Anthony Bonnell, Barry Charity and TimSlater have been named to representAustralia in the Para-Sport triples competition in Glasgow.

Both of these two categories willcompete for full medals at theCommonwealth Games in July 2014.

Congratulations on the State Carnival.Janice Mark, Publicity Officer

Metro v Country

Clarification ofSelection ProcessThe recent intoduction of the Metropolitan v Country

series seems to have stirred up some discussion regard-ing the selection of the 48 players, who will be partici-

pating in this inaugural event at Port Macquarie City BowlingClub on August 25-26, 2013.

The reasons for the introduction of this event, in this format, was to give consistent achievers at District and Regional level (inthe last 18 months), the opportunity to showcase their game at ahigher level and possibly be considered for selection in NSW rep-resentative sides in the future. No members of the 2013 Under18’s, Under 25’s, State Side or the 2012 Senior Interstate Sidewere considered eligible for selection in the 2013 Metro v Countryevent. The 2012 Senior Interstate Side is still the incumbent rep-resentatives, until the 2013 side is selected in late August 2013.

Because there were no candidates who put themselves forward for the position of State Selectors at the 2012 AGM thetask has fallen to the Board to act on recommendations to fill thepositions for any representative games in 2013. Selections thisyear have been based on results received in the NSW Office, ofevents at International, Australian, State, Regional and Districtlevel, and the final decisions for the Metro v Country sides weremade in early May. For notification to those players we had toawait their acknowledgement and agreement to participate beforeany announcement could be made. District or Regional resultsachieved after this date or received in NSW Office after this time, could obviously not be taken into account. As much as possiblethis selection has been carried out fairly and without bias.

Because State Selectors are given the opportunity to attendRegional playoffs and other significant games across the State, their base for selection is not purely reliant on submitted results,as is the case in the current situation, with only a recommenda-tion being made to the current Board members who already havenumerous other official duties as well to carry out.

As mentioned only 24 players from Metropolitan and 24 players from Country NSW were selected for the upcoming seriesand it would be appreciated by all members, that there wereother worthy candidates who fit the criteria as set down, andmissed out, but again only 24 for each side were required.

Any member who fits the criteria to nominate as a StateSelector is most welcome to put their name forward for the 2013AGM and become part of the NSWWBA Association in a moreeffective, active and constructive manner.

NSWWBA • BOWLS MATTERS32

Dad was very pleased withme.

Soon, I was into serious tennis competi-

tion, and from thatpoint on, I won each

of the Under13, 15, 17, andUnder 19

Illawarra Singlestitles, and was

regularly their No. 1inter-district representative

until I was around 20 years and decidedto get married. I mention all of thisbecause I firmly believe that sportingskills definitely transfer across all sports, and if I ever think back on my bowlingcareer, tennis is somehow intertwinedwith it all.

I continued to play tennis after mov-ing into the Canterbury-Bankstown area, where I played No. 2 District representative to the wonderful localplayer, Gail Sherriff, and played A1 tennis in every available aspect with theSherriff family (father Ross Sherriff wasone of the most talented players to everdon a towelling hat), and I was fortunateenough to have tennis great, TonyRoche, as my mixed doubles partner fora couple of seasons. He was thenaround 18-19 years of age, and had justcome to the city from Tarcutta.

I was around 30-31 years of agewhen my husband, Lloyd, came up withthe following brilliant idea. “I’ve beenthinking we should take up a sport wecan both play into our later years, andI’ve been making some enquiries andam told that the Picnic Point BowlingClub has a lot of things going for it.”

To say that this idea was out of aclear blue sky is to underestimate itsshock value to me. Lloyd informed mewe would be going down to the club onthe following Saturday morning, with thekids (3 of them at that stage) in tow. Iwas quite horrified. Begrudgingly, I wentalong with the plan, happily knowing itwould be short-lived, and met up with agreat coach, Bill Prosser, from theRegents Park club, who then coachedat Picnic Point every Saturday. From thefirst moment I picked up his 5 inchheavyweight bowl and Bill told me the fundamentals of a smooth delivery, I’mafraid I was hooked, and Bill predictedfor me a bright future.

No doubt, you will find, that, as Ibegin to write down thoughts on lifeand bowls in general, it will most likelygrow to rival the length of “Gone Withthe Wind”, but better too much thannot enough, I guess. Because I wasmuch younger than they were, many ofthe bowlers with whom I played early onare, sadly, no longer with us, and I havetaken pains to ensure nobody will behurt in any way by my accounts ofbowls “back then”, and that’s an important measure.” As with Karen’sstory, I will begin at the very beginning.

I lived all of my earlier life in BexleyNorth with my parents and three siblings. My father was a very keen tennis player, and used to sometimestake me to White City grass courts onweekends, where he either played orwatched various, then Australian tennisgreats, many of them female – NancyBolton and Thelma Long come readily tomind. I was the only child in the familywho took any particular interest in sport, and I took to tennis at around age 11with untold enthusiasm. Holidays wouldsee me every day from sun-up to duskplaying tennis on the street with localboys, or else hitting up against a brickwall in the backyard, practising my volleys and imagining I was representingAustralia.

I had not actually played in any tenniscompetition when my Dad saw an ad inthe local paper asking for young girls tocome and try-out for inter-district teamsin the strong Illawarra District. He toldme he would be taking me on Sunday. Ibawled in anguish – “But Dad, my dressis dowdy, my racquet only has nylon gut(much frowned on), and I won’t knowanybody.” Nonetheless, off we went –the 472 bus to the end of Harrow Road, and a hike around to tennis courts nearthe railway line in Kogarah.

I was miserably apprehensive, thegirls were cliquey, the male officials were unimpressed with my appearance, but,in true Hollywood movie style, I managed to trounce all three of theirmajor singles stars that one afternoon.

RosemaryO’Brien

Disappointingly, Lloyd never gained allthat much enthusiasm for the game, preferring his other major pursuits, namely, fishing and gardening, so hisplans for our jolly, mature-aged socialactivities never did eventuate.

I believe I was around 32 years ofage when I actually joined up as a player, which, as you can imagine, was considered ridiculously young. At thattime, I couldn’t wait to get down toPicnic Point every Saturday, and thiswent on for about the next 12 months. Ibegan to play a bit of social bowls, some night matches and some week-end ones, and I entered some of theclub championships. Within the year, Ihad won my first club singles, and was immediately put into the top grade ofNo. 1 pennants, playing third to a lovely player named Phyllis Bass.

Those early days were wonderfullyenjoyable and inestimably educational inthe art of our great game. However, bowling was then quite different. It wasnothing unusual at all to find yourself ona green running at 18/19 seconds, andthere had been no reduction, or evencontemplation of it, in the bowl’s bias,so a game could take a very long time,as the bowl arced out beautifully andslowly trundled all the way back in to itstarget.

When I first became a bowler therewere two things which then put the fearof God into almost every player. Onewas champion bowler, Merle Richardsonfrom the Bulli or Corrimal club who wasa superb bowler and won almost every-thing, and the other was the AshburyWomens’ Bowling Club, which also woneverything about the place and had adozen or more very strong players.Sweat beads would begin to form withmy team-mates if I mentioned we wouldbe tackling Ashbury. Things were goingalong nicely on the bowls front when Idiscovered, within 18 months of joiningthe club, that I was pregnant. I won mysecond club singles title when 6-7months pregnant, and reached the finalof the Brighton Master Pairs when I wasaround 8 months pregnant.

You have to realise that rules and regulations were much more lax backthen, so having a new baby didn’t dauntme at all. During pennants, I was able torun my car right up to the edge of thegreen, feed my baby prior to pennants

Rosemary O’BrienMeet a Bowler

Page 33: July-August

starting, put her to sleep in the backseat of the car, and play the entire gamewith nary a problem – fortunately, mybaby was a good predictable sleeper, and never slept less than the requisitefour hours, plus pennants was then inwinter, and snuggling down in a carbassinet was not all that unpleasant.

My keen attitude caused some tut-tutting, but my own club loved havingme available for pennants and statechampionships, and, though it couldn’tand shouldn’t happen in these muchmore regulated days, it was fine backthen, and nobody really suffered, especially not my sociable daughter.Predictably, I did run into bother at someclubs with some rather narky ladies who(possibly correctly) believed I should beat home tending my baby, but, beingyoung and silly and receiving greatencouragement from my own club, it did not particularly worry me. I hadabsolutely wonderful days at PicnicPoint, made many friends, and will neverforget their support and friendship.

I went on to win 19 club Singles atthe Picnic Point Club and many otherclub championships and also manageda grand slam of club championships, aswell as many district championships.Back then Picnic Point had become oneof the strongest clubs in the State and itwas from there that I won both my StateSingles championships, first in ‘73-74,and again in ‘79-80. I also won anAustralian Pairs with the brilliant MerleRichardson in the late seventies, andthe State Pairs with Ruth McRae in ‘83-84, the State Triples twice, in ‘76-77and again in ‘81-82, a No.1 StatePennant, a National Round Robin winplaying second for Ashbury great LilThoms, a State Fours in ‘75 and againin 1990, the State Master Singles in ‘81,the Belmore Maestro Singles in ‘78, andprobably my biggest win was I think in1981, the National Champion of StateSingles Champions held in Melbourne.

I recall when I made my first Stateteam and found myself playing secondfor the tiny bit scary Lil Thoms, wholiked nothing more than having bowlsaround the jack, both lead, BettyBunyard, from the north side, andmyself were almost paralysed with fear, but it was a great experience, and Lilproved to be a great skipper and a veryencouraging team-mate. I had many

trips away interstate representing NSW,and they all had their moments.

I remember, on, I think, only my second interstate trip away, roomingwith a player who was notoriously late. Iwas shaved, showered and ready to goto the designated club, when I realisedthat she was still in her “nightie”, and stillon the phone to her partner, who, apparently, liked to provide her withmany long, long phone calls of undyingdevotion when she was away. I mentioned to my room-mate that wehad only 10 minutes before the bus wasdue to leave, and she looked at me inhorror, and said something like, ”You’renot going to leave me, are you?” I wastorn. I was a new chum, and knew Iwould be in big trouble if I missed thebus. I elected to stay with my pal, andhad to undergo a severe tongue lashingwhen, eventually, we did get down tothe foyer.

I was often, the one who might suggest a small party back at the room,or watching a movie after lights-out, orvolunteer to duck down and bring backsome drinks for our organised get-togethers. Sometimes, you would findbowlers with rather strange habits. Oneof my room-mates liked to practise herdelivery in the hallways of the motel/hotel where we were billeted, and thereis something slightly weird about hearingthe clunketty-clunk of a bowl traversingits way down a wooden-floored hotelhallway. I’m afraid I was never quite asdiligent.

Very soon after that, I was chosen asa State skipper at around the tender age(for those times) of 36-37 years of age. Ican distinctly recall, when my name wascalled out as skip, you could have hearda pin drop, and it must have been a

massive shock for the, then, almostentrenched skippers, but, I would haveto say, that, once the bitter pill that theywere about to be skippered by a “youngster” had been swallowed, theywere wonderfully supportive of me.

At that time, I was anything but highlyorganised, even though I was trying torun a family of four kids (with the essential help of my mother, because, in those days, husbands were not supposed to be worried about the day-to-day running of a household, andmy husband, Lloyd, was no different, even though he was otherwise veryencouraging of me in my bowling pursuits). I recall, for instance, when Iwas due to attend a very importantevening team dinner at an inner-cityhotel, and go off to a bowling practisethe next day, I had forgotten my bowlshat, which was then tantamount todoing away with a troublesome neighbour, and after a quick phone callhad my husband Lloyd racing into thecity by train to bring me my hat. Suchmishaps were hugely frowned on, and Ithink I was looked on as a bit of a concern, someone who definitely needed to be watched!

We were always having the hems ofour dresses measured by an unforgivingwooden ruler, and if the lower sides ofour shoes had not been fully included inour shoe cleaning routine, we would behauled over the coals (or as one of myfar more descriptive neighbours waswont to say, “called over the holes”). Iwas always in bother for having a bowlscloth slightly protruding from my dresspocket, and once, during a State Triplesfinal, loud mutterings were ongoingamong those seated and watchingaround the green that the length of my

came up with the idea for a competi-tion for bowlers not playing pennants. The competition is run according tothe same timetable and at the samevenues as for the pennant matches.

Each week teams from each club accompany their pennant teams to thepennant venue and play in a “Not thePennants” match beside their clubmates. Bowlers put in a small contribution which pays green fees andallows for monetary prizes at the end ofthe pennant season.

The competition has benefits such aspennant reserves are always on hand, allbowlers are able to participate in competition, and support for the pennant teams abounds.

The competition was trialled on Saturdays in the recent pennant season. It was a great success and we all lookforward to it next pennant season.Bowlers from the various clubs in thedistrict especially enjoyed the opportunity to get to know one another. We welcome visiting bowlers to join us.

We will publicise the competition amonth before the next pennant season.

Meet a BowlerContinued from page 33

Rosemary O’Brien

short-sleeved bowls dress might notpass a measurement test. Fortunately,we lost that particular final, so there wasno scary measure produced ...... whichmeasurement, I was quite sure, I’d havefailed miserably.

During that decade of my life I alsofound myself participating in several TVquiz shows, and won quite a stash ofmoney and prizes, which also meant Iwas spending any spare time I had instudying up trivia, entertainment factsand general knowledge, in an attempt tooffset the growing financial demands ofa young family.

My greatest thrill came in 1982 whenI was selected as lead in the Triplesteam for the Brisbane CommonwealthGames. It was the first time that awomen’s team had been allowed representation in a Games, and thewarm-up matches were played in Fijiand we travelled extensively aroundQueensland in efforts to drum up support for lawn bowls.

There had been a very strict selectionprocedure, and we had needed to be upin Brisbane for a week, playing practisematches both in the day and sometimesat night, and the selection panel wouldsit behind all our rinks and mark off theworth of the particular bowl we had justplayed.

I did not have very high expectationsof selection at all, especially when facedwith the opposition of the 3 or 4 bestplayers from every State in these lead-up games, and them only needing3 players for the Australian team. It wasa hard slog during the trials and then wehad a dinner at which the team wasannounced. I was not paying the attention I should have been, when Iheard in the distance, “RosemaryO’Brien from the Picnic Point Club.”Feather-knocking down was the order ofthe day, be assured.

Our team performed quite well, winning 11 matches out of 14, and withZimbabwe being the clear winner,Australia, England and Scotland endedup in a tie of matches won for the silverand bronze medals. Guess which teammissed out by .00000 of a point – yep,Australia. However, the overall experience was unique, and entailed aride around the arena during the closing

ceremony on the footboard of the Royalcar, at which time the Queen and Philipasked us would we like another ridearound the block, and, of course, yourstruly said “Yes please”, with gusto. Wewere also part of the ticker-tape paradearound Brisbane streets, and it was oneof the few times I was ever asked for my autograph. The wonderful Robert deCastella, Tracy Wickham and RaeleneBoyle were part of the Games contingent, and it was a great experi-ence to chat with them.

Things settled down again at PicnicPoint after my Commonwealth Gamesadventure, but the club was going into abit of a decline, player-wise. Many of ourtop players had left or were leaving, andI agonised for around four years, beforefinally succumbing to an offer to join thestrong (and soon to be much, muchstronger) Cabramatta club. I did not timemy Cabramatta arrival all that well as thesame week that I arrived, the very brilliant player, Dorothy Roche(Australia’s best ever at that stage), haddecided to abruptly leave the Merrylandsclub and join Cabramatta, so my arrival, after my years of being torn, barelycaused a stir. I had a very successfultime at Cabramatta club, winning fourclub singles, and also managing toannexe another grand slam of clubchampionships, as well as winning aDistrict Singles, back-to-back DistrictPairs championships, and a couple ofdistrict Fours events. I made a lot offriends at Cabramatta, and managed tobe, once again, at the centre of any fun-making activities.

Around five years ago, I was asked tojoin the strong Merrylands club, whichhad been trying valiantly to win yetanother No. 1 pennant. There had beena few minor hiccups at Cabramatta, Iwas feeling a bit jaundiced with bowls ingeneral, and thought a move toMerrylands might re-vitalise me, so Iagreed to join. It was the first year thatthe New Zealand players were asked toplay pennants for the club, and I playedsecond for the brilliant, Jo Edwards. Inthe final analysis, yes, we did win theState No. 1 pennant flag that year, but, whether it is ultimately a good thing, overall, or not, it did seem to lead to thearrival at all these strong local clubs ofsome of the most brilliant players frominterstate to help in the ever-ongoing

quest for the holy grail of bowls, a No. 1State Pennant flag.

My bowls ride has been, what I didnot ever contemplate it could possiblybe, when first I rolled down a bowl atPicnic Point. It has been a huge part ofmy own and my family’s lives, and it hasprovided me with much fulfilment andjoy.

Only yesterday I received an invitationfrom the Bankstown City Council toattend a luncheon on the 3rd March, atwhich time I will be inducted into thebrand new Bankstown Sporting Hall ofFame, alongside such luminaries as theWaugh brothers, the Konrad twins, swimmer Sandra Morgan, Len Pascoe, and many other greats of sport. So, itappears, bowls remains a huge part ofmy ongoing life.

As far as the City of BankstownSporting Hall of Fame luncheon, it was ahuge success, with over 250 peopleattending, many sports stars, some politicians and other luminaries. Finewine and beautiful food was the order ofthe afternoon and no expense had beenspared.

The new building is a two storey onewithin the grounds of the MemorialCricket Ground at Bankstown and isnow open to the public, with photos ofall the inductees gracing its walls. I was honoured to have been one of only eightchosen photographs on the back of theofficial menu/presentation pamphlet forthe luncheon.

I suddenly felt uplifted by the Hall ofFame event and justified by my recollected decision to dedicate a largeportion of my life to the game.

To be included in such a rare gathering of sporting talent, gave meback a much needed serving of self-confidence and I realised once againthat on that Saturday morning, long, long ago, when I first rolled a bowl downa beautifully inviting piece of turf andfound myself hooked, I had not made awrong decision.

Congratulations Rosemary on beinginducted into the Bankstown Hall ofFame. These nominations are onlygiven to well deserved and highlyawarded sports people in the Councilarea. There is no doubt you haveearned your place in the Hall of Fameand thank you for allowing us to shareyour life experiences with us.
