Well folks, summer is here in full force!! At the HBA the heat hasn’t stopped us from packing in some great events and meetings over the last month. If you missed the GMM on June 25th at ALS Top Shelf, you missed a FANTASTIC evening. Thank you to Jean Kaminski for being our hon-orary Emcee for the night. She did a wonderful job introducing (and in some cases, roasting) our Past Presidents and Associate Vice Presidents. Carolyn and Kelly worked their tails off to make this an evening that we won’t soon forget. We packed the house with over 80 attendees. Thank you to everyone who participated. ● On June 19th the Sales and Marketing Committee hosted a Morning Buzz, featuring FHBA’s very own Lynne Edwards. We had a great turnout and everyone walked away with valuable information about how to get the most of marketing dollars when investing in Trade and Home Shows. ● The Remodelers/Green Council has been hard at work putting together interesting and educational presentations every month. June we heard from a company who recy-
cles scrap granite into pavers and fire pits. Now that is a great use of a wasted resource. Next month they are bringing the field trip to the HBA office. Eric Love with The Paint Drop by Valspar will be demonstrating their innovative method of bring-ing the paint store to your job site. Plus they are bringing Lunch too!! You won’t want to miss it. In May we had a mem-bership drive that earned the recruiters Triple Spike Points and we saw a few super heroes along the way. Get your re-cruiting muscles warmed up, because we are doing it again in September and recruiters will earn Double Spike points this time around. As the President of the HBA of Lake~Sumter I want to thank everyone for their participation, sponsorships, loyalty and friendships. This is truly a fantastic Association to be a part of, and I am grateful for you all.

SALES AND MARKETING (SMC)
Networking, or not working?
You may have heard this phrase before, is it networking or not working? I say it is some of both. When attending business functions or working on volunteer projects, it’s really best not to try and sell yourself within the first few minutes of conversation. Relax, smile and ask some easy
questions. Even if you are not comfortable initiating conversation, you are probably a very good listener. Be positive, look people in the eye, repeat the per-son’s name, and make them feel special. Listen to what they are passionate about, and let them know what you are passionate about. This is what creates memorable conversation. And follow up on those really great conversations, so your contact remem-bers you. Where should you network? Our trade associations provide numerous opportunities each week! Give back to the community through civic organizations. Volunteer and make a positive contribution, mentor children, donate time in a food pantry, or join a club that relates to a hobby or interest you may have. Ar-rive early and find folks who don’t have conversation partners yet. I love to introduce people I know to oth-ers and help them learn about each other’s busi-nesses. A warm introduction jump starts relationship building. You can also be subtly self-promotional by sharing how you have worked with the other person or by complimenting their successes or referrals they have given you.
Try not to hijack the conversation, but engage others in conversation. When you ask someone for advice, it makes them feel closer to the person who cared enough to ask the question. If someone does ask you about your product or service, be ready to pro-vide an easy description, recent accomplishments, a new client, or a business milestone. Just be humble when you are telling your story. Networking is part of a successful business. Whether you are helping others to make a connection to you or someone you know, you are still building relation-ships. People are more likely to do business with people whose company they enjoy. When you dem-onstrate your passion for your work and for others, the rewards will come.

Irrigating Efficiently for Florida Yards
Some of the most beautifully landscaped homes in the country are in Florida. We have on average over 50” of rain a year and a very mild win-ter, allowing our yards to look great throughout the year. So how do we keep the grass so green all year
long? We just water, water, water it all year long. Almost every new home in Central Florida comes with an irrigation system. However, many sys-tems operate very inefficiently. Much of this ineffi-ciency comes from either poor design or cost savings. Different sections of the landscape require different watering needs. Generally speaking, turf will almost always require more water than any planting beds. However, most irrigation systems irrigate shrubs and turf in the same zone dividing the yard based on loca-tion not watering requirements. Not only does this lead to overwatering the plants but also leads to less developed roots. The first step in improving irrigation efficiency is to separate the zones for turn and plant-ings. Micro-irrigation has become increasing avail-able and cost effective. Inline drip, micro sprays and multi-stream spray rotors deliver water much more efficiently and evenly than traditional sprays leading to lower water needs. These can easily lead to a 30% reduction in water demand and are great to use in planting beds delivering the water directly where it needs to go, the roots. Lastly, our landscapes require different water-ing needs throughout the year. We can make a tablet computer that a 3 year old can use without instruc-tions yet the average person cannot adjust their sprin-kler timer. Having the irrigation contractor pre-program the controller for (A) Summer, (B) Winter and (C) Establishment. This doesn’t take a trained person long at all yet greatly simplifies the process for the owner. Better yet, also attach a laminated one page zone map with recommended seasonal run times to the controller. We all like beautify landscapes. We can still deliver beauty while protecting Florida’s water supply. One of the first steps is to irrigate efficiently.

Governmental Affairs (GA)
On June 14th Governor Scott signed House Bill 7119, the “Homeowners Association Bill”. Although we fought at the local and state level to banish the bill altogether, the represen-tatives in Tallahassee worked hard with FHBA Governmental Affairs members to remove some of the items that were especially of concern with the HBA. 4 Bills were combined into one much shorter bill. If you would like to see more details on this bill visit this website: http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2013/7119
Join us on the Governmental Affairs committee and be a part of the process to protect our way of life and our way of doing business. Call Kelly @ 352-343-7101 or speak with any of the committee members to join.

Since mid-May, your Home Builders Association Wood Commodity Index (Index) dropped $60.17 per thousand (or 15.6%) as supply outpaced demand and the commodity market ad-justed from unsustainable levels. However, the Index remains $12.80 per thousand (or 2.8%) higher than last June. While the month-to-month drop is significant the market is still at levels above the Great Recession. It appears this period in the market is more of a break than a col-lapse.
The lumber portion of the Index dropped $38.35 per thousand (or 9.9%) as most decreases were across the board. The 2x4 stud material stayed in the single digit drops while construction dimension in both pine and spruce traded down from 9.7%-12.1% with wide widths giving up more. The lumber market pricing is trying to form a bottom and it is hard to imagine the market dropping lower than last year’s benchmarks. CDX plywood and OSB sheathing took significant hits in pricing as available wood was prevalent throughout the supply chain. The sheathing portion of the Index dropped $76.48 per thousand (or 19.7%) with thicker panels dropping less. It appears mills are jockeying to use their annual summer maintenance shutdowns to firm the markets. The biggest problems in the supply business at this moment is shingle pricing, which is scheduled to go up the first of August, just in time for hurricane season, and prompt availability of windows with extended lead times due to fewer manufacturers. However, this is subject to change for two primary reasons:
• Inventories in the supply chain remain woefully low and any spike in demand could send pricing skyrocketing up. Hurricane season can turn a weak market into a roaring lion at the next forecast. These two factors are why these markets remain volatile. This period is what I call a sucker’s market. Builders will bid projects based on these numbers to get jobs and then two months later when the job starts, pricing is much higher. Be sure to protect yourself with price escalation clauses--don’t trust today’s prices. Don Magruder is the Chief Executive Officer of Ro-Mac Lumber & Supply, Inc. in Central Florida (www.romaclumber.com), and he is a former President of the Southeast Mississippi Home Builders Association, and past Associate Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Lake County.
