Climate Onecontinues on KRCB Television 22Climate One Commonwealth Club Forums
Climate Onediscusses what climate change means or the military and what one country inthe Middle East is doing to develop alternative energy.Segment 1
What do military ocers think about the United States reliance on oil? One group o
retired brass concluded that it threatens economic stability and national security. U.S. NavyVice Admiral (retired) Dennis McGinn says they studied scientic data and energy modelsor more than a year and concluded that the Pentagon should clearly integrate energy and cli-mate change into its strategy and operations. That means beeng up the countrys creaky andvulnerable electric grid, pushing hard on energy eciency, driving toward electric militaryvehicles and pursuing renewable uels. Why? Because, they say, it would reduce the burdenon soldiers overseas and make the country stronger.Segment 2When you think o the Middle East solar power doesnt come to mind. But one country,
Jordan, is unveiling an ambitious plan to get o a ossil uel dependence. The JordanianMinister o Energy and Natural Resources discusses what they are doing to develop analternative energy inrastructure.Sunday, July 25 at 11am

KRCB presents the story ofThe BuddhaThe Buddha
Two and a hal millennia ago, a newreligion was born in northern India, generated rom the ideas o a single man,the Buddha. He was a mysterious Indiansage who amously gained enlightenment
while he sat under a big, shapely g tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God orhis emissary on earth. He said only that he
was a human being who, in a world ounavoidable pain and suering, had ounda kind o serenity that others could nd too. Award-winning lmmaker David Grubin tellsthe story o the Buddhas lie, a journey especially relevant to our own bewildering times oviolent change and spiritual conusion. This documentary draws upon the work o someo the worlds greatest artists and sculptors, who across two millennia have depicted theBuddhas lie in art rich in beauty and complexity. His biography is also tracked geographi-cally across the sweeping landscapes o northern India. The testimony o contemporaryBuddhistsincluding Pulitzer prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin and His Holiness the DalaiLamaprovides insight into the ancient narrative. To tell his story is to understand histeaching. And to understand his teaching is to gain new insight into what it is to be human.Thursday, July 8 at 8 pm

Jewish AmericansThey Came to Stay/A World o Their Own
In the 1700s, a small number o Jews came to America, struggling to hold ast to their aith and heritage while becom-ing part o the emerging nation. During the 19th century,German-speaking Jews arrived rom central Europe, becomingpeddlers, selling provisions to armers and those heading west. The Civil War ound Jewish Americans ghting on both sideso the struggle, while coping with anti-Semitism in both thenorth and south. By the 1870s, 250,000 Jewish Americans hadsettled across the country. Some were attempting to adapt Judaism to America with a move-ment called Reorm Judaism. In the early 20th century, drawn by the promise o America, more than two million eastern European Jews fed poverty and oppressiongravitatingto the Lower East Side o Manhattan. The immigrants went to work, most o them in thegarment industry, where they not only dominated the work orce but owned many o the ac-tories. Working conditions were dismal and Jewish-American workers spearheaded the driveto orm unions. On the Lower East Side, Jewishness permeated the very texture o everydayliein magazines, music, poetry, books and theater. Thursday, July 15 at 8 pm
The Best o Times, The Worst o TimesAs Jewish Americans tried to enter the mainstream o American lie, they were rustrated by
anti-Semitism even as they developed their own resources. Facing a wave o worldwide anti-
Semitism and shut out rom much o American lie, Jewish Americans developed a paralleluniverse all their ownestablishing Jewish raternities and sororities, summer camps andcommunity centers, hospitals and schools, neighborhoods and vacation resortsand ventur-ing into new businesses. In the 1920s, Jewish immigrants came to dominate Hollywood, creating the Hollywood studio system and enacting their version o the American dream.
Jewish Americans ound opportunities in radio, too, with shows such as The Goldbergs, created by Gertrude Berg, which appealed to Americans all over the country, Jews andgentiles alike. The Best o Times, The Worst o Timesdescribes the Jewish response to Hitler and the
Holocaust, ocusing on the relationship between Jewish leaders. It details the reaction oJewish Americans to the stories o the death camps that emerged ater the war. Nearly all oEuropean Jewry had been destroyed, and American Jews suddenly ound themselves thelargest and most powerul Jewish community in the world. Thursday, July 22 at 8 pm
HomeWith Hitler deeated and six million European Jews murdered, American Jews were
ghting despair. By the 1950s, discrimination against Jews in daily lie began to abate.Jews entered proessions such as medicine, law and banking in record numbers, and JewishAmerican culture went mainstream as Jewish comedians came to dominate the new medium
o television. By the 1960s, Jewish Americans were directing their political energies else-where and a ragile but sometimes untenable alliance or civil rights was orged with AricanAmericans. By the turn o the 20th century, as Americans o other aiths began exploring thelimits o their religious traditions, many Jews begin experimenting with innovative spiritualpractices as well, bringing Buddhist meditation into their own religious practice whileOrthodox Judaism was thriving as it never had beore. Today, Jewish Americans continueto weave themselves into the social, cultural, economic and political lie o the country.Thursday, July 29 at 8 pm

KRCB new employee
Heather Ferronato
A return on your investmentWhen you make an investment, its natural to have certainexpectations. You want assurance that your money ismanaged responsibly, and expect to see that investmentgrow into something that will bring long-term benet to
you and your amily. An investment in KRCB yields returns every time youtune in, whether its or great television programming onKRCB Television 22, or music, news, and inormationrom KRCB FM Radio 91.
KRCB has been broadcasting here in Sonoma Countyor over 25 years and has grown right along with thecommunities we serve.
Please renew your membership or make an addi-tional contribution right now with a quick visit to our web site at www.krcb.org. Yourmembership git is a sound investment and makes possible everything you see and hearon KRCB.
Just a ew months ago, Heather Ferronato cameto KRCB through a special program rom Good-
will Industries and quickly made her presence eltthrough her dedication and the amount o workshe has accomplished in the short time she has been
with us. Heather is working with CommunityEngagement Director and Volunteer MangerCheryl Scholar to update KRCBs VolunteerProgram in order to provide greater support toour sta on current projects and also to assist inthe development o new programs that our listeners, viewers and Website visitors have requested.
Heathers new volunteer database will make iteasier or us to nd just the right person to lead anew project or to provide assistance on a current activity. This is important, as KRCBattracts over 300 volunteers a year (who do everything rom answering phones tohosting radio shows). Because a large part o our unding is based on the number ovolunteer hours we report each year it is critical to track that inormation accurately.Heathers energy and enthusiasm is remarkable given that she has two young and veryactive children at home. It undoubtedly helps that she is an avid yoga practitioner andprior to coming to KRCB, was a certied Yoga instructor. We dont know how you doit, Heather, but one thing is certain: your contribution to KRCB will strengthen what
we do now and provide a solid oundation or uture endeavors.OK everyone: A big round o applause or Heather!
