Pastor’s Musings A pizza delivery boy arrived at the house of Larry Johnson. After receiv-ing the pizza, Larry asked, “What is the usual tip?” “Well,” replied the
youth, “this is my first trip here, but the other guys say if I get a quarter out of you, I’ll be doing great.” “Is that so?” snorted Larry. “Well, just to show them how wrong they are, here’s five dollars.” “Thanks,” replied the
youth, “I’ll put this in my school fund.” “What are you studying in school?” asked Larry. The boy smiled and said, “Applied Psychology.”

Message from the Pastor W elcome to St. Ambrose ! We are so glad you are able to join us
today to celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. CHRIST’S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD: There’s a bit of a “missing link” in the first two sentences of today’s Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two (“one who is sent” is the meaning of “apostle”). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus’ name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn’t have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allow-ing the Lord to hear what we’ve sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God’s name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world. Have a wonderful week—Remember—the most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling; and even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason behind it!
REFLECTIONS The Second Reading today speaks of Christ as our peace, destroying the dividing walls of hostil-ity between people though his death on the cross. It is ironic, of course, that the very city in which Christ was crucified has become synonymous with walls of hostility between peoples—as have cities such as Berlin and Belfast in the past. But in our daily lives most of these walls are not made of bricks, or indeed steel. They are more usually made up of unkind words squirreled away and retained for future airing; old grievances nursed and fed; slights unforgiven and allowed to fester. Where is Christ in these for us today?

A Prayer for Hurricane Season O God, Master of this world,
hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned calm to the seas. We live in the shadow of danger over which we have no control. During this hurricane season, we
turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from all storms that may harm us or our loved
ones. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved mother, we ask you to watch over and
protect us until we walk in the footsteps of your divine Son and reach the heavenly
Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

See you there!
Prayer of Petition I asked God for health that I might do great things; I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men; I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life; I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among all men, most richly blessed.
