1.1-3 .net version 1.1-4 Java version

1.1. GENERAL OVERVIEW

The JAVA & .NET Shutdown client (JNC) software package is a suite of programs for the remote control via EThernet Network and

automatic shutdown of computers powered by SOCOMEC systems.

The programs in the CD are compatible with JAVA and .NET technologies and therefore can support a wide range of operating

systems (Microsoft™ Windows®, LINUX, UNIX™, etc.).

The JNC package consists of a collection of three programs:

• Client Setup: easy and intuitive software tools used to configure the shutdown client parameters.

1. JAVA & .NET SHUTDOWN CLIENT

• Client monitor: the software that displays the main UPS status information using the graphics interface of the operating system.

Shows the status of shutdown events and displays the warning message.

• The service: the software that controls the connection with the UPS and performs certain default actions when events occur.

This part of the package does not use graphic components, but has been designed for use as a service (on Windows® systems)

or daemon/process (on LINUX / UNIX™ systems).

1. JAVA & .NET SHUTDOWN CLIENT

1.2. OPERATIONS

CONNECTION TO NET VISION

The connection between the Ethernet interface, the UPS and the server with the JNC client is carried out using UDP/IP protocol.

Shutdown events have to be activated via html pages on the UPS Ethernet Interface (such as NET VISION, embedded interface, etc.).

CONNECTION TO DELPHYS GREEN POWER

The connection between DELPHYS GREEN POWER range and the server with the JNC client is carried out using UDP/IP protocol.

The RJ45 connector is located on DELPHYS GREEN POWER MIMIC PANEL.

The JNC service must be activated on the mimic panel by setting the UDP port used by JNC: 200 by default.

Shutdown events have to be activated via the embedded web server on the mimic panel. The JNC html page is enabled on the web

server after setting the JNC port on the mimic panel.

DISPLAYING UPS EVENTS

The client uses configurable messages to display any critical situations in the power supplied to PCs by the UPS.

SIMPLIFIED CONFIGURATION

For operating systems with a graphical user interface, the shutdown client parameters can be configured using easily interpreted

panels. For server operating systems that have no graphical interface, the parameters can be configured by modifying a simple end

of text. These parameters can be modified manually by editing the COMMON.CFG in the JNC installation folder.

DESIGNED WITH TECHNOLOGIES INDEPENDENT OF HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE

JAVA and .NET are technologies that are independent of the computer hardware. Full compatibility of this package with your opera-

ting system is assured by the specific libraries that make your system JAVA or .NET compatible.

There are three versions of the shutdown program on the CD:

- JNC (.NET): enhanced version of .NET for Windows® .NET systems

- JNC (JAVA): enhanced version of JAVA for systems with JRE 1.4 (1.6 recommended) and above

Page 6: JNC Shutdown Client - Socomec

2. COMPATIBILITY

The JNC package is compatible with a wide range of operating systems. This compatibility is ensured with the correct installation

of either JAVA or .NET support software.

Many operating systems include native support JAVA or .NET. For details on compatibility levels please consult the on-line guide

for your operating system. The use of non certified SUN JRE could cause unexpected shutdown client behaviour not described in

this manual.

3. INSTALLATION OF THE JAVA AND .NET SUPPORT

3.1. .NET FRAMEWORK FOR WINDOWS®

In order to use .NET technology, it may be necessary to install the support for Microsoft™ .NET Framework onto the operating

system.

To install the support, run the file1 \Install_NET_Framework_2_0.bat and follow the instructions.

If the installation program finds a more recent version of the libraries already installed on your operating system, you can close the

procedure and move on to the chapter on installation of shutdown software.

Note: the .NET framework included in the SUPPORT directory is in English. For other languages, please connect to Microsoft™ Download Centre.

3.2. JAVA JRE/JDK INSTALLATION

If you need to know whether JRE or JDK is already installed on your operating system or if, after installing the JRE (or the JDK) you

want to test if the installation was completed successfully, you can open a command shell and type the command java –version

at the command shell prompt.

A text similar to the following confirms the JAVA environment is already installed on your system:

Java(TM) version “1.x.x”

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.x.x)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.x.x, mixed mode)

Package available:

- LINUX i586 and x64 installation package

- ORACLE® for i586 and SPARC installation package.

It is possible to install the LINUX rpm package on other UNIX™ operating systems.

Note: We recommend checking the last version of JAVA environment for your operating system on the Internet.

The JRE installation file can be downloaded from the Sun Microsystems web site or from your operating system producer’s web site.

If you are manually installing the JRE, it should be installed using default paths (see the list below) to permit start scripts (i.e. start.sh) prepared for

each operating system to find the JRE. Alternatively, if you need or prefer to install JRE on a different path, please remember to modify the scripts

in the JNC folder in accordance with the path chosen.

AIX® “/usr/jdk_base”

LINUX “/opt/jre/bin”

ORACLE® “/usr/bin”

Standard path used for all shell files in JNC environment:

JRE_DIR= /opt/jre

If the jre is located in another folder, it will be necessary to create a symbolic link to this folder, or to modify all shell files in the jnc

with the correct jre patch (like /usr/jre/java for example)

Shell files to modify: start.sh (run the daemon), setup.sh (configuration tool), viewer.sh (status Windows®)

Command to create the symbolic link

ln –s JREInstallationDirectory /opt/jre

5. CONFIGURATION OF THE JNC CLIENTS

CUSTOMERSCRIPT

Customised script to be executed before shutdown. If the execution is not complete by the end of the shutdown countdown, the

batch process will be forced to close.

i.e.: CustomerScript = /usr/jnc/stop_batch.sh

MSGWARNING

Set the command used to send the warning messages to the local or remote OS users. Type the path and the complete command

name using the case sensitive form. Insert the special char % where the program will insert the warning string.

i.e.: MsgWarning = /usr/jnc/msg.sh %

WARNINGONVIEWER (ONLY FOR .NET DISTRIBUTION)

Specify if warning messages are to be shown on the Viewer application (in the Service Message area):

YES = Warning message visible also on Viewer

NO = Warning message NOT visible on Viewer

i.e.: WarningOnViewer = YES

AGENTUDPPORT

Set the communication software (i.e. Net Vision) remote UDP port

i.e.: AgentUdpPort = 200

BASEUDPPORT

Set the base local UDP port used to communicate with the communication software.

i.e.: BaseUdpPort = 1025

Note: the software will try to open one of the UDP ports, starting from the selected port.

LANGUAGE

Set the language used to show messages and user interface text strings.

The following values are available:

- uk English

- it Italian

- fr French

- de German

- sp Spanish

- custom Customisable by the user.

i.e.: Language = uk

BASEUDPIPADDRESS

Set the local PC IP address on which opening the BaseUdpPort opens.

i.e.: BaseUdpIPAddress = 192.168.0.1

Notes: this parameter is optional and it is useful to link the JNC to a specific network interface in case the PC has more than one.

If this parameter is not present, the default network card will be used.

If this parameter is used, the IP Address(es) management must be static (DHCP disabled).

6. SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE

6.1. DESCRIPTION OF THE SHUTDOWN PHASES

The shutdown procedure consists of 3 main phases:

• The reversible shutdown phase (1st one);

• The NON reversible shutdown phase (2nd one);

• The UPS close down (3rd phase).

1st phase starts after an event i.e. mains power failure detected by the UPS.

The UPS sends the information on the event to the server.

Depending on the time set in the 1st warning field for the mains failure event on the Shutdown Parameters Page (UPS Management

main menu), a warning message is sent using the command set in the Warning Command field (MsgWarning parameter on JNC/JSC).

Note: the Delay time, 1st Warning Time and Warning Interval time affect both the local computer and remote computers which are running the

shutdown client program.

6.1-1

Page 16: JNC Shutdown Client - Socomec

16 JNC Shutdown Client - Ref.: OPMJNCXXXX00-GB 08

6. SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE

6.2-1 SHUTDOWN.EXE parameters

The 1st phase lasts for the time set in the ‘Delay’ field for the mains power failure event on the Shutdown Parameters Page (UPS

Management main menu).

During this phase after the first warning message, other warning messages are sent depending on the time set ‘Warning Interval’

field for the mains power failure event on the Shutdown Parameters Page (UPS Management main menu).

If the alert condition stops i.e. mains power restored during the 1st phase, the whole system returns to the normal ‘waiting’ condition

and stops sending warning messages without performing any further actions.

If the alert condition is longer than the set Delay time, the server enters the 2nd NON reversible phase.

This means that the computer shutdown procedure (for both local and remote units) will become NON reversible so as to ensure

correct completion.

During the 2nd phase warning messages are still sent until the computer is shutdown.

The duration of the 2nd phase is set in the UPS Shutdown Delay field on the Shutdown Parameters page (UPS Management main menu).

As the UPS should close down at the end of the 3rd phase (to avoid damaging the batteries due to complete discharging) and stop

powering the load, it is necessary to set a shorter delay time for computer shutdown (2nd phase).

The shutdown delay for the computer running on the server can be set in the Local Shutdown Delay field.

The shutdown delay for other computers must be set in their shutdown client program configuration.

The 3rd phase consists of UPS close down which simply consists of interrupting power supply to the load and setting the UPS to

standby (waiting for mains power to be restored if this was the cause of the shutdown or the scheduled time).

Note: the UPS will be switched off by the program only in the event of a mains power failure or scheduled shutdown.

IMPORTANT!

With other alert conditions the program lets the UPS manage shutdown and the possibility for setting the shutdown

time for this type of event is only for shutting down the computers (the program has no effect on the UPS shutdown

procedure).

6.2. SHUTDOWN COMMANDS FOR Windows®

By default JNC is already configured to be able to send

shutdown commands for:

- Windows® Server 2003

- Windows® Server 2008

- Windows® Server 2012

- Windows® Xp

- Windows® Vista

- Windows® 7

- Windows® 8

using the SHUTDOWN.exe application supplied with JNC.

If you need more information about the SHUTDOWN command,

please type SHUTDOWN /? at the command shell prompt and

a popup window will appear (see figure).

It may be necessary to specify the full SHUTDOWN command path for the server shutdown procedure. By default JNC may not

already be configured with the full path because you may decide to use a different default folder to install JNC. In this case you will

have to substitute the default command:

SHUTDOWN /C /L /T:5

with

<JNC program folder>\SHUTDOWN /C /L /T:5

for example:

C:\Program Files\SOCOMEC\Socomec JNC Systems Shutdown\
