What is JIT and why do we do it?

• This theory is applicable to repetitive manufacturing processes• Ensure that the right parts are in the right place at the right time• Minimise waste by reducing inventory (increasing inventory

turnover)• Ensure the use of a stable plan (no late/ rush orders)• Ensure quick set up times on all production lines• This allows short production runs & small purchasing lot sizes• Use preventative maintenance plans (during non production time

to avoid unexpected breakdowns)• Ensure that there is a well trained flexible workforce (to minimise

line manning issues)• Implement a supplier quality assurance programme (to ensure

there are no issues with raw materials)

• Each order is exploded into its component parts• Production orders are raised and scheduled on the production
