January 2020 As I plan for 2020, I am excited about “Looking to the Future” and the opportunities it brings to our Temple. Opportunities to work to better engage our membership as well as to strive to attract new members so that we can continue to be good Shriners and support Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout 2020 and beyond. Our Temple is the 7th oldest, and the accomplishments have been nothing less than amazing – all because of you!. While “Looking to the Future” is important, I also believe that “Honoring the Past” is very valuable. As a second-generation Potentate, I am grateful for all those Potentates that have served before me, for their efforts are what provides me the privilege to serve you today. Learning from the successes and failures of the past, will help guide me on this journey as your Potentate in 2020. The decisions of the past have positioned our Temple where we are today and Lady Judy and I sincerely thank them and all of the members – Past, Present and Future for their efforts and support. Thanks to all the Ill. Sirs, Divan, Trustees, Nobles, Ladies and the Bingo crowd for bringing cans to the Shrine Center AND for using the Recycling Can while there so I could turn them into CASH, $508.00 this year! A big thanks also to Cohen Recycling for giving me dealer prices for everything we scrap with them. If you have any metal or aluminum scrap to add to our effort, please bring it on down. If you have a large load you can call me to arrange for possible pick-up (513-884-3172). Thank You – Chuck Jeffers

RECYCLING

The Fastiques continue to make dreams come true with their donation to our Shriners Burns hospital in Cincinnati. Their $65,000 donation will go to purchase helmets for our patients. These Helmets work by directing growth to help correct the child’s skull shape. Helmets are made for the individual child, and average $4,000 per helmet, and are not covered by insurance. Also, part of the money will be used to purchase special wigs for the children that are in need, these wigs run as much as $2000. This brings the Fastiques Car Clubs donation to our temple of mercy hospital here in Cincinnati to well over $1,000,000.

Antique CaravanOur Amazing Shrine Center, Syrian Shrine depends on the dedication, commitment and effort of all our members and their families, and most importantly the Units and Clubs, who are the backbone of our local fraternity. As I have said before our backgrounds and interests are diverse, but we are bound together by our shared values and a desire to have fun, do good and build relationships that will last a lifetime. With that said, we wish the new offices success in 2020, as Illustrious Jerry Ulm, honors our rich history while creating new traditions. I think his direction is an estimable one, along with focusing on attracting high-quality members to our fraternity.

Cincy DriftersGreetings Nobles and friends! It’s a New Year and behold we present a new unit to the Shrine’s repertoire of fine units. The Cincy Drifters are anxiously awaiting the parade season as we take delivery of our new drift trikes. Our expectations are to be road ready for the first parade of the season. Our membership is growing, and we hope to expand our social events since fun, fellowship and riding for the kids is a few of our main goals. If you have an interest in joining the Cincy Drifters, contact Travis Proctor. Be safe and stay warm! Scribe Unit Director: Tim Redrow P.P. [email protected] (513)417-2189

Classy ChariotsThe Classy Chariots will go dark for January and February. Starting in March we will plan our cruise ends for the 2020 parade and show season. Hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year Thank you Charles C Jeffers II 513-884-3172

ClownsIt always brings me great pleasure to announce good things about our clown unit. Just a couple weeks back I was called by Sue telling me that there was a t-shirt at the temple awaiting me. But I have not ordered any t-shirt went through my mind. Nevertheless I went over to the temple to pick up the items. To my great surprise the mom of a small child had printed up a t-shirt for Stripes DaClown. And sent him a card telling him thank you that he is his favorite clown and he loved coming to our circus and cannot wait until next year to see him again. I feel this should be shared throughout our shrine for all the positive returns that we have, should be shared to all. Great job Stripes we all are very proud of you keep it up. Desert RidersIllustrious Sir, Divan, Nobles all. Happy New Year. We hope all had a great holiday season. Here is to another spectacular year in Shrinedom. Please welcome our new Director Mike (cue ball) Hensley. We now are planning this year’s parade schedule and are already working on our cars. Other than that, we are just trying to stay warm. If you want to become a Dessert Rider let us know. See you at the temple. -Tim Callahan, Secretary

RoadstersThere isn’t too much going on in January for the Roadsters but we sure had a lot of fun in December! December 8th we all came together at the Shrine for games and a lot of food for our holiday celebration. The turkey was especially delicious (patting myself on my back)! Our Santa Claus, Bill Burwinkel, and Mrs Claus, Lynn Bischak, talked with many good boys and girls at Fretboard Brewery on the 15th while their parents made generous donations to the Shriners Hospital. On the 21st, Santa listened again to many more good boys and girls as they made their last-minute requests at the Syrian Shrine Kids Christmas Party. And that evening, many of the Roadsters visited Shooters to enjoy the holiday music performed by the Santa’s Goody Bag Band. If anyone would like to join us in all these good times, please feel free to contact me at 513-218-2380 for information. We meet every 4th Tuesday at 6:30. Our January meeting will take place at the Blue Goose in Sharonville on the 28th. Wishing happy January birthdays to Cindy Smith (2nd), Norman Bell (15th), and Lori Teater (23rd)! And happy 2020 to everyone! May the next year bring happiness, peace and good health to you and your family and friends! -Don Meinzen, Director

Directors StaffThe Directors Staff wishes every Noble and all family members a very Happy New Year. We hope to see everyone at the public installation on January 11. It should be a good time. Remember membership is the lifeline of our organization. Please support your lodges this year. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and got everything they want, and not a lump of coal like Sharon got again. Now that the holidays are over it is time to take off the weight you put on. Hopefully it is not a lot of weight, but if it is get to work and take it off. If Sharon takes off any weight no one would be able to see her. Remember you only have 45 days to Valentine’s day. Take care of your ladies. Directors Staff members if you have not paid your dues, pay it now or Sharon will be contacting you. Congratulations to the new Divan and Trustees! Remember to buy your sportsman lottery ticket. Congratulations to our own Don Brockman, the 2019 Shriner of the year! Nobles please keep the sick and distressed Brethren in your thought and prayers. May 2020 be a better year for them than 2019. Congratulations to Andy Nadel for a successful year at Hanselmann Lodge. He is truly a has been. He has requested a past master’s apron or watch or ring or jewel, or all of the above from his sister, but she does what she always does. Ignore him and take about something else, that no one is interested in, for the next 4 hours. Take time to remember our veterans who fought so gallantly in World War 2. Snowbirds enjoy hope you enjoy the warm weather as we in the Ohio Valley get ready for the wintery mix of weather. A very Happy Birthday to our beloved Director Bucky Buck Walter. Birthdays for January include Buck Walter January 12, Joe Cosgrove January 22, Brian Haddix January 27.

Hillbilly Clan #5Whew!!! The hollie-days are over and now it’s 2020!! We hillbillies hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! We want to welcome our 3 newest members who decided to join our crazy group of hillbillies: Tim and Gayle Callahan and Terry Adams – HOWDEEE!!! We had soooo much food left over, that it was donated to the Dearborn County Sheriff’s (PO-leece) Department (hillbilly member Jenny Lynn is a sheriff at this location) and we shore hope that got their bellies full (love our fellers and ladies in blue). A HUGE thank you to Don Sauerwein who put in 46 hours of love (we mean labor) to make our cattywampus bus safe for everyone to ride. Don, you are amazing, and the hillbillies are very appreciative…The Hillbilly Pumpkin Run “parkers” celebrated on December 1st with some vittles hosted by the Fastiques and received a pocketbook full of cash for all the hard work. Clan #5 wishes everybody a tootin’ good 2020!!-tjg

Hospital HostGreetings Nobles and friends. The Hospital Hosts Unit would to wish everyone a very Merry and Joyous Christmas. We continue do our volunteer work at our Shriners Hospital for Children and we invite any Noble interested in experiencing the satisfaction of aiding this great Shrine cause to join us. We meet each 1st and 3rd Wednesday, at the Hospital. Meetings last approx. an hour, 9:30 A.M. Convenient parking in the attached hospital parking garage. Our annual Christmas Party will be at the hospital, on December 18, with dinner and fellowship. Hosts, please put this date on your calendar, it will be a little more special, due to the possibility of it being our last one. With the potential changes to be made, the Hospital Hosts Unit will no longer be needed and will end with a proud, long history of service to our beloved “Shriners Hospital for Children.” We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly elected officers of 2020-Syrian Shrine and wish them a very successful year. Now for a smile or two: Recently received a Christmas catalog from a company I wasn’t familiar with. Not wanting to be cheated I sent them a letter saying, “With all the fraud and misrepresentation, I don’t know who to trust. Send me the merchandise and if it’s any good I’ll send you a check. A week later I got a letter back from the company saying, “We have the same problem you have. Send us a check. If it’s any good, we’ll send you the merchandise.” One more: After a little too much Christmas cheer a Noble was staggering home drunk in the early hours of the morning when he was stopped by a police officer. “What are you doing out at this time of night?” asked the officer. “I’m going to a lecture,” said the Noble. “And who’s going to be giving a lecture at this hour?” “My wife.” My friends, Live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling. -Dick Manifold

Oriental BandGreetings from the Oriental band. Dennis Lovell, Director John Synder Conducting. The Holiday season is now over, and we begin to ramp up for our annual Jamboree on the first weekend in June. We will be learning some new music this year and from what I’ve been told it will have a patriotic theme to it. We would like to welcome our new Director, Denny Lovell, who has taken over the reins from Ken Harper. If you have an interest in the band, please feel free to get in touch with me and we can talk about our practice schedule. My cell phone is 513-348-6486 or email at [email protected]. Respectfully Paul Brown Scribe

Shrine Golf LeagueGreetings Nobles and friends. Yes, I know it’s winter out there, but you know April will be on us before we realize it. So, you will have a lot of time perfecting your putting game (maybe with a new putter for Christmas,) practicing on the living room rug. The Syrian Shrine Golf League will be in full “swing” next year. We look forward to you and your golfing partners joining us. Now a smile or two: Seems after a particularly poor round, a golfer spotted a lake as he walked despondently up the eighteenth fairway. He looked at his caddie and said, “I’ve played so badly all day, I think I’m going to drown myself in that lake.” The caddie, quick as a flash, replied, “I’m not sure you could keep your head down that long.” One more: If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here’s a valuable tip: Get a life….. My friends keep on swinging.-Dick Manifold

Bona Court 8Esteemed Nobles and Ladies, Across the desert sands a brisk wind blows, and if you listen closely you will hear a poem on the air... As you ride your camels, keep your eye upon the sky, Just as wise men did before you when a special star they spied And undertook a pilgrimage to give gifts and adoration To a child of humble birth, who would soon be our salvation So, a wise man still will journey through the vast and lonely world To take comfort and compassion to each little boy and girl For each child is our future, so let them all behold you As humble, loving servants, honorable nobles, through and through. By Erin Newkirk, PHP Bona Court 8, Cincinnati, Oh We wish much joy to the Ulm family for the upcoming installation of Jerry Ulm on Jan 11. Our annual High Tea is coming up January 25th at the Temple. Word has it that the entertainment is “a surprise”. If you and your lady would like to join us, it’s always a nice get-together. Margi Spatz is the organizer. Keep warm! Store some of that Christmas spirit in your heart to tide you over through the rest of the winter journey. Know that we think of you fondly as we work together for our great philanthropy. -Debbie Demaris, HP

Ishtar Temple No. 54Daughters of the Nile, Congratulations to the new Shrine officers – the Daughters of the Nile are looking forward to working with you in 2020. We hope your holidays were great! Keep the children in mind all year long – that’s what we’re most interested in. -Marian Baird, Past Queen
