Kimono

•Once referred to all types of clothing

•Described as “T-shaped, straight-lined robes that fall to the ankle, with collars and wide, full-length sleeves”

•Always worn by women, particularly for special occasions

•Today, they come in a variety of styles and forms

•Unmarried women wear a particular style of kimono, called a furisode

Yukata

•A Japanese summer garment

•Literally means “Bath(ing) clothes”, because they are frequently worn after bathing at traditional Japanese Inns

•Common sight at fireworks festivals, bon-odori festivals (custom to honor one’s deceased ancestors), and other summer events

•Can be worn by both men and women (usually at the baths mentioned above)

Tabi•Separate the big toe from the rest of the toes.•Worn with Zori, Geta, and other footwear of the like.•Essential with traditional clothing.•Most common color is white, worn in formal situations.

Obi•Worn with a kimono or keikogi (a uniform for training).•A type of sash.•Worn by both men and women.•When it comes to a Yukata, the Obi is usually tied in a bow in the back.•With a kimono, used to keep the robe closed and in place on the body, as well as for decoration.

Geta•Named for the “clack, clack” noise they make.•Raised to keep the wearer’s feet out of the mud.•Described as not being easy to walk in.

Accessories

Haori

•Meant to be worn open, only folded up before one enters the place they are visiting

•A lightweight, silk jacket

•Used to help keep the kimono clean and dry

•They come in different lengths, long for dressy-wear, medium for ordinary wear, short for wearing at home

•In the anime Bleach, used to signify a captain, with the division number on the back. The captain shown is Gin Ichimaru from Division 3.

Hakama•Origonally only worn by men, but are now worn by both men and women

•Worn over a kimono

•Origonally worn by samurai

•Tied at the waist, and fall approximately to the ankles, and are pleated

•An example of women in a hakama are Miko, or Shrine Maidens. Hakama worn by women are different, most notably in fabric design and method of tying

Shihakusho

•A standard soul-reaper uniform

•I’ve only heard it be used in the “Bleach”

•They are usually altered slightly to fit personal taste (ex. Nemu Kurotsuchi cuts hers very short, while Hisagi Shuuhei rolls up the sleeves of his

•Normally they don’t differ by Division. The only exception is Division 12, in Research and Development, where they cover their Shihakusho with white lab coats…to…keep the…guts off of them…or something

Hitai-Ate•Known in the american-dub as a forehead protector, or hheadband

•Comes in different colors (ie blue,red, purple) and styles (headband, armband, skullcap, etc.)

•Your village/land’s symbol was printed on it

•In real life, they were common among Japanese warriors. It was inexpensive head protection to those who couldn’t afford a helmet (the style of helmet is known as a “Kabuto”

Sailor Fukuand other School

uniforms

•Worn by public and private schools alike

•Modern male’s outfit is made up of a shirt (either long or short sleeved), a girl’s outfit is made up of a shirt (short or long sleeves) and a skirt (can be either short or long). A kindergartner’s outfit can be made up of a shirt, a hat, and a pair of shorts/skirt

•Uniforms can change with the seasons (long sleeves/pants for winter, short sleeves/skirts in the summer)

•A sailor fuku is a girl’s uniform that was designed similar to that of a sailor’s outfit.

Lolita

•In Japan, despite still being a subculture and fringe fashion, Lolita fashion is mass-marketed and has wide visibility particularly in the streets of Tokyo and Osaka, on television, in manga (see Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa for an example of gothloli inspired manga) and computer games. Outside of Japan it is still a widely unknown fringe fashion although it has slowly begun to spread to other countries.

•Mainly influenced by Victorian children’s clothing as well as costumes from the Rococo period.

•There isn’t just one type of lolita, it is divided up into sub-categories (gothic, sweet, punk, etc.)
