My Neighbor Totoro

Made in 1988 by Studio Ghibli.

The story is about two young girls and their father who move to the countryside. Their mother is bedridden in a nearby hospital.

The girls befriend a family of woodland creatures. Mei, mispronouncing the word “troll” from the Three Billy-Goats Gruff, calls the creatures Totoros. This is a Japanese wordplay pun.
