As  another  year  is  dawning,  I  want  it  to

be  one  that  richly  counts  for  God.    I  want  it  to  be  a  spiritually  prosperous  and

produc:ve  year.    I  want  it  to  be  the  kind  of  year  that  I  will  look  back  on  in  the

years  to  come  and  view  it  as  one  of  the

best  years  of  my  life,  as  far  as  eternal  things  are  concerned.

The  beginning  of  a  new  year  is  a  :me,

when  in  a  certain  sense,  we  can  start

afresh.    It  ought  to  be  a  :me  when  we  aim  higher,  reach  further,  dream  bigger,

and  believe  stronger.

If  the  coming  year  is  to  be  a  year  of  great

spiritual  advancement  and  achievements,  I  believe  there  is  one

thing  that  is  absolutely  essen:al.    I  believe  that  we  must  have,  and  keep,  a

burning  heart.    In  Levi:cus  6,  we  read

about  the  fire  that  burned  upon  the  sacrificial  altar.    In  verse  12,  we  read  that,

“the  fire  upon  the  altar  shall  be  burning  in  it,”  and  note  carefully  these  words,  “It

shall  not  be  put  out.”    Verse  13  says,

“The  fire  shall  ever  be  burning  upon  the  altar;  it  shall  never  go  out.”

This  was  a  fire  that  had  been  ignited  by

the  Lord.    When  the  Tabernacle  was

dedicated,  the  Lord  sent  fire  down  from  heaven  to  ignite  this  fire  that  burned  on

the  altar  day  and  night.    The  priests  were  to  keep  wood  on  the  fire  and  see  to  it

that  the  fire  never  went  out.    It  was  a  fire

that  was  to  burn  con:nually.    Like  the  fire

on  the  altar,  we  must  never  let  the  fire  go

out  in  our  hearts.

The  New  Year  may  bring  things  that  we  never  expected  or  an:cipated.    There

may  be  things  that  will  happen  that  will

break  our  hearts.    The  very  founda:ons  of  our  life  may  be  washed  away  by  some

storm  or  adversity.    There  may  be  great  days  ahead,  but  it  is  also  possible  that

there  are  grievous  days  ahead.    There

may  be  much  to  make  us  glad,  but  it  is  also  possible  there  may  be  things  ahead

that  will  make  us  sad.    Difficul:es  are  not  out  of  the  realm  of  possibility.

An  unknown  author  has  wriNen:

When  things  go  wrong  as  they  sometimes  will,

When  the  road  you’re  trudging  seems  all  uphill,

When  funds  are  low  and  stress  is  high,

And  you  want  to  smile,  but  you  have  to  sigh,

When  care  is  pressing  you  down  a  bit,

Rest  if  you  must,  but  don’t  you  quit.

Life  is  odd  with  its  twists  and  turns,

As  everyone  of  us  sometimes  learns,

And  many  a  failure  turns  about,

When  we  might  have  won  had  we  struck  it  out:

Don’t  give  up  though  the  pace  seems  slow-‐

You  may  succeed  with  another  blow.

Success  is  failure  turned  inside  out-‐

The  silver  tint  of  the  cloud  of  doubt

And  you  never  can  tell  how  close  you  are.

It  may  be  near  when  it  seems  so  far:

So  stick  to  the  fight  when  you’re  hardest  hit-‐

It’s  when  things  seem  worst  that  you  must

not  quit.

Keep the Fire BurningPastor’s Note

Page 3: January_February Newsletter 2013_2

What  will  keep  us  from  quiQng?    A  burning  heart!    Why  do  we  need  a

burning  heart  for  the  New  Year?    A  burning  heart  will  keep  you  going  when

nothing  else  will,  in  the  difficult  and

discouraging  :mes  of  life.    It  will  keep  us  from  quiQng.    We  need  a  burning  heart

to  keep  us  growing.  It  will  keep  us  from  becoming  stale  and  stagnant  in  our

spiritual  walk.  We  need  a  burning  heart

to  keep  us  glowing.  It  will  keep  us  dreaming,  believing,  striving,  and  reaching.    That  is

why  we  need  a  burning  heart  for  2013.

The  source  of  the  burning  heart  is

spending  :me  with  Jesus.    It  is  very  important  that  we  spend  :me  with  the

Lord.    Like  Martha,  we  must  not  get  so  busy  that  we  do  not  sit  at  the  feet  of

Jesus,  as  Mary  did.    Work  is  never  a

subs:tute  for  worship.    Spending  :me  with  Jesus  is  the  secret  to  a  burning

heart.

Do  you  want  to  keep  going,  growing,  and

glowing?  If  so,  keep  a  burning  heart.  Let  the  words  of  the  hymn  writer,  Edwin

Hatch,  be  your  prayer:

Breathe  on  me,  Breath  of  God;

‘Til  I  am  wholly  Thine:

Un:l  this  earthly  part  of  meGlows  with  Thy  fire  divine.

Never  let  the  fire  go  out  on  the  altar.

Blessings,Pastor  Bob

Recently,  we  came  up  with  the  idea  of  displaying  a  map  in  a  prominent  place,  so  we  could  all  easily  see  where  the  Global  Workers  and  Projects  that  GKM  supports  are  located  in  the  world.

We  were  so  excited  when  the  8’  by  3’  laminated  plexiglass  went  up  beside  the  elevator.  When  we  mounted  the  informaEon  plaques  on  the  wall  beside  it,  there  was  a  sense  of  saEsfacEon.    Then,  with  excitement,  we  marked  on  the  map  the  locaEon  of  our  personnel  worldwide.    It  was  then  that  the  reality  of  the  situaEon  set  in.    As  we  looked  at  the  map,  it  became  very  evident  that,  as  far-‐reaching  as  our  ministry  is,  we  sEll  have  so  much  further  to  go!    We  are  so  grateful  for  our  Global  Workers  and  Projects,  and  we  must  conEnue  to  pray  and  give  to  support  them.  But  WE  are  all  Global  Workers,  too.    Are  we  fulfilling  the  commission  He  has  for  US?

So  whenever  you  stop  by  and  visit  our  Global  Outreach  Map,  make  a  note  of  where  we  are,  and  pray  for  the  Global  Workers  and  Projects  there.  But  also  take  a  moment  to    ask  the  Lord  if  he  wants  to  send  YOU  somewhere  on  that  map!

“In   the  year  that  King  Uzziah  died,   I  saw   the  Lord  sitting  on  a   throne,  high  and  lifted  up,  and  the  train   of  His   robe   8illed   the   temple.   Above   it   stood   seraphim;   each   one  had  six  wings:   with   two   he  covered  his   face,  with  two  he  covered  his   feet,   and  with  two  he  8lew.  And  one  cried   to   another  and  said:   ‘Holy,   holy,  holy  is   the  Lord  of  hosts;   The  whole  earth  is   full  of  His   glory!’  And  the  posts  of  the  door  were  shaken  by  the  voice  of  him  who  cried  out,  and  the  house  was  8illed  with  smoke.  So  I  said:  ‘Woe   is  me,   for   I   am  undone!  Because  I   am  a  man  of  unclean  lips,  And  I  dwell  in  the  midst  of  a  people  of  unclean  lips;  For  my  eyes  have  seen  the  King,  The  Lord  of  hosts.’  Then  one  of  the  seraphim  8lew  to  me,   having  in  his   hand  a   live  coal  which  he  had  taken  with  the  tongs  from   the  altar.   And  he  touched  my  mouth  with  it,  and  said:  ‘Behold,   this  has   touched  your  lips;   Your  iniquity   is   taken  away,  And  your  sin  purged.’  Also  I  heard  the  voice  of  the  Lord,  saying:  ‘Whom  shall  I  send,  And  who  will  go  for  Us?’  Then  I  said,  ‘Here  am  I!  Send  me.’  And  He  said,  ‘Go,  and  tell  this  people…’”    -‐  Isaiah  6:1-‐9

Isaiah  had  a  vision  of  three  dimensions.  Firstly,   it  was  an  upward  vision  as  he  saw  the  Lord  high  and  lifted  up.    Secondly,   it  was  an  inward  vision  as  he  saw  himself  and  the  recess  of  his  own  heart.    And  lastly,  it  was  an  outward  vision  as  he  saw  the  world  and  was  commissioned  to  go.

George  Deakin  said,  “A  vision  without  a  task  makes  a  visionary;  a  task  without  a  vision  is  drudgery;  a  vision  with  a  task  makes  a  missionary.”    During  the  time  of  fasting  and  prayer  we  will  be  praying  for  fresh  vision  for  2013.    We  will  be  following  Isaiah’s  three  fold  vision  and  trusting  the  Lord  for  a  time  of  confession,   cleansing  and  commissioning.    If  you  can  not  make  it  to  the  corporate  prayer  gatherings,  please  see  the  schedule  on  the  next  page,  to  pray  along  with  the  GKM  family.    We  are  trusting  God  to  give  you  fresh  vision  for  who  He  is,  who  you  are  to  Him,  and  direction  for  where  you  will  go.

Who  Are  We  Missing? Many  people  find  Holy  Spirit  mysterious,  confounding  and  even  controversial.  Why  would  the  third  person  in  the  Godhead,  the  One  Jesus  said  would  be  the  believer’s  ulEmate  source  of  truth  and  comfort,  be  the  source  of  confusion?

Our Vision

Page 5: January_February Newsletter 2013_2

Christ  -‐  Growing  in  the  Knowledge  of  Christ  -‐  2  Peter  3:18The  first  step  in  our  faith  Journey  is  to  gain  a  greater  understanding  of  Christ  through  study  of  the  Bible  and  the  prac:ce  of  prayer.

Character  -‐  Being  Transformed  into  the  Image  of  Christ    -‐  James  1:23-‐24,  2  Corinthians  3:18,  We  should  examine  ourselves  and  compare  our  character  to  that  of  Christ's.    This  is  a  life-‐long  process,  but  we  need  to  start  somewhere.

Calling  -‐  Pursuing  the  Call  of  Christ  -‐  Philippians  3:14,  1  Peter  2:21God  has  a  plan  and  purpose  for  us.    As  we  discover  our  giaings,  we  are  more  prepared  to  walk  in  our  des:ny.

Community  -‐  Serving  the  Body  of  Christ  -‐  Ephesians  2:10,  Romans  12:3-‐8The  first  expression  of  our  gias  is  oaen  in  a  ministry  or  group  in  the  community  of  faith.    We  are  all  parts  of  the  Body.  Are  we  doing  our  part?

Care  -‐  Loving  the  NaQons  as  Christ  -‐    2  Corinthians  5:14-‐15,  20,  MaThew  28:19-‐20Our  calling  extends  to  making  disciples  of  all  na:ons.    When  we  care,  we  give  people  the  opportunity  to  experience  God's  love  in  a  prac:cal  way,  so  we  can  invite  them  to  start  a  faith  journey.

Vision:Life with Jesus - everyday, everywhere.

Mission:To be a community of believers fully devoted to Christ

making disciples in our City and beyond.

A  larger  church  experience  is  very

important.  It  solidifies  the  spiritual  and  philosophical.  It  allows  us  to  celebrate

what  Jesus  is  doing  in  our  lives.  But  it  doesn’t  meet  the  personal  need.  For

what  you  believe  to  turn  into  how  you

live,  you  must  be  connected  to  people!  People  who  know  you  and  love  you  and

are  willing  to  walk  through  life  with  you.  Life  can  be  treacherous.  It  takes  a

God-‐serving  community,  who  know  the

specifics  of  your  life,  to  act  as

reinforcements.  Life  was  never  meant

to  be  lived  in  solitude.  One  can  have  all  the  head  knowledge  of  Christianity,  yet

if  he  attempts  to  live  it  alone,  he’s  done.  That  is  the  beauty  of  Life  Groups!

Many  people  think  it  will  make  life

more  complicated  and  is  just  another  thing  to  do,  but  in  reality  it  will  make

life  more  doable.  Life  Groups  allow  the  theory  that  we  learn  to  become

practicality,  so  that  truth  believed  may

become  truth  lived.

Our  Life  Groups  have  tesEfied  of  many  answers  to  prayer,  immediate  healing  for  shoulder  pain,  housing  for  someone  in  crisis  and  financial  blessings  for  several  people.    We  thank  God  for  the  incredible  work  he  is  doing  in  each  life  group,  and  we  encourage  you  as  a  church  family  to  connect  to  a  group  in  your  area.

Bill  Donahue  of  Willow  Creek  Small  Group  Team  says,  “ConnecEng  people  in  a  small  group  is  not  an  opEonal  sub-‐ministry  of  the  church  -‐  it  is  essenEal  for  growth.  Without  this  connecEon,  people  can,  at  best,  a[end  meeEngs,  but  they  aren’t  truly  parEcipaEng  in  church.”

Kingdom  Driven  Young  Adults

Success…   Family…   Friends…   Education…  What   drives   us?  There

always  seems   to   be   something   that   is   fighting   for   our   time   and  attention.      This  generation  is  being  pulled  in  every  direction.    When  we   take   a  moment   at   the   end   of   the  day   and   think,  “Why  am   I

doing  the  things  I   do,”  many  don’t  have  a  concrete  answer,  while  others  are  too  busy  to  even  ask  this  question.  I  heard  a  quote  that  once   said,  “Only   one   forth   of   people   actually   live   intentionally.”    That   means   people   are   just   reacting   to   society,   listening   to   any

voice   they   hear,   and   moving   in   whatever   direction   the   crowd   is  going.    The  result  of  aimless  wandering   is  a  meaningless  existence  and  a  hopeless  future.

I  believe  that  God  has  a  great  purpose  for  this  generation.    When  a  generation   that   has   so   many   choices   chooses   to   serve   God

radically,  they  have  the  potential  to  shake  a  nation.

At   Driven,  we  challenge  young  adults  to   know  what   they  believe,  live  what  they  believe  and  proclaim  what  they  believe.    We  want  to

live  as  Jesus,  radical  with  grace,  mercy  and   love  for  others.    Join  us  every  Thursday  night  at  7:30pm!

Every  Thursday,  we  have  a  variety  of  Life  Groups  where  you  can  grow  deeper  in  the  Word  and  in  relationships.

On  the   last  Thursday  of   each  month,   the   life  groups  collide  as  we  celebrate  together  through  praise,  worship  and  preaching  of  the  Word.

Centennial  College  Outreach

This  past  Christmas  season,  the  young  adults   of  GKM  were  given

an  opportunity  to  express  and  share  the  love  of  God.    We  provided  a  free  dinner  for  the  international  students  who  attend  Centennial  College.    It  was  called,  "The  Gift."    The  students  shuttled  over  from

Centennial   residence   and,   as   they  walked   into   our   Atrium,   they  were  overwhelmed  by  the  love  and  generosity.

I   believe   this   night   built   many   bridges   and   tore   down   many  misconceptions   about   Christianity.     Some   had   never   been   in   a

church   building  before,  while  others  couldn't   understand  why  we  would  do  something  like  this  and  give  so  much  stuff  away  for  free.    By  the  end  of  the  night,  their  hearts  were  opened   to  us,  and   I  was

able  to  share  about  the  greatest  gift  of  all,  Jesus  Christ.

I  believe  that  this  night  will  mark  their  memory  for   the  rest  of  their  lives.    As  each  Christmas  comes,  they  will  remember  "The  Gift"  that

was  given  to  all  humanity.

Please  partner  with  us,  and  pray  for  these  students.    We  are  going  to  continue  to  build  relationships  with  them  and  will  be  doing  more  outreaches  at   the  residence  this  semester.    Please  pray  that  many

will  come  to  know  Jesus.

Ps.  Ben

Middle school can be one of the most daunting and challenging periods of development that children and parents will ever experience. It is where children begin their transition to adulthood in earnest. Veteran teacher Robert Walrond sees a whole range of common problems, including disengagement, emotional distress, lack of attention, low achievement, negative peer pressure, risky behavior, distractions caused by mass media and hormonal development, and involvement with cliques, bullies and gangs. Parents have a huge impact on how children behave and whether they succeed or fail. His new book, Every Parent’s Guide to Middle School Success, offers simple and practical strategies for helping your child succeed in middle school. Here is some of his best advice.

YOU the parent -- are the linchpin. Recognize that while success in middle school is a team effort with the parent, the teacher and the student, YOU the parent are the most important part of the team. YOU influence your child. YOU influence the teacher. So acknowledge your role and take the responsibility for what happens.

Communicate with your child. Talk in the morning. Talk in the afternoon. Talk in the evening. Talk by phone. Text your child as frequently as appropriate to coordinate where they are, what they are doing next, and what they and you will be doing together next. Stay in direct contact with your child, and do not lose the direct personal attention and connection.

Find out what is really happening at school. What is really going on in school? Find out. Go to the school and get all the information the school has available. Search the Internet. Study the school web page. Learn about the extracurricular programs and opportunities for student and parent involvement. Get the calendar and identify the events. Learn what is planned, and talk to the teachers, coaches, and other parents, and place these events on your calendar. Learn and think about what your child is doing, with whom and when from morning to night.

Get your child involved in school activities. Get them into clubs, sports, music, theatre, and other sponsored and monitored after-school activities. Encourage them to develop interests, skills, and the desire to perform and develop in all sorts of ways. Support them to the maximum degree in whatever they decide to be interested in even if it is a financial sacrifice that needs to be budgeted and carefully managed.

Go to the school often and get involved yourself. Go to events with your child. Be an avid fan and cheerleader. Be a coach, be a helper, be a fundraiser, offer to chaperone, offer to cook, offer to help clean up. Volunteer to be a teacher’s aide. Even just sit in class and watch the teacher sometime if it is allowed.

Listen to what is happening carefully. Read the school newspaper regularly. Read the Principal or School Teacher Newsletter. Jump on the news of opportunities for new activities and involvement. Pay attention to what’s new. Read progress reports carefully.

Attend school conferences. Make the back-to-school night and all student/parent/teacher conferences a mandatory event. Learn what is being taught in each class. Look at the books and materials being used to teach. Look at the rooms and facilities where your child will be spending each day. Put names to faces and learn how to contact teachers by phone and email if you have questions. Contact teachers and ask questions. Be active and follow up if you don’t hear back in a timely fashion.

Be courteous with teachers and administration. Do not drop into classrooms unannounced. Check in with the front office. Schedule visits with the teachers and staff. Enter classrooms as a neutral observer. Behave yourself and do not draw attention or disrupt the teacher or your child. Be positive and make the experience a good one for all involved.

Pay close attention to how your child is doing. Grades are important, but they are not everything. Is your child happy? Does he or she do what’s necessary with a good attitude and an open mind? Is the child suddenly withdrawn, frustrated or angry? Pay attention to the clues. Listen and think about what is going on. Ask questions gently and learn what you can. Do not take rash actions.

Meet with teachers one on one. Problems may arise in middle school: assignments late or not turned in, low grades on quizzes, projects not done, unexcused absences, problems with other students. You must go to a teacher conference with an attitude of helpfulness. You and the teacher are there to help children help themselves to be more successful. Make it easy on the teacher.

Stay connected with your child. Expect changes to be resolved slowly over time and not overnight. Let your child know you are informed. Understand that students stretch the details and embellish the facts. Realize that their hormones are changing, and that the drama and emotion are oftentimes what is governing their reality. Don’t be judgmental or automatically rush to their defense or take sides. Stay in tune. Be there when they need you.

Taken from Every Parent’s Guide to Middle School Success, which contains answers to questions like these and many more important issues that parents will face. It is a roadmap which provides helpful guidance that will empower parents and give them insights they might otherwise never find when needed.
